You know. Maybe referring to my 69yo tortoise at work who likes to fuck as "herbie fully loaded" was a mistake. As now my interns call him that. In front of my supervisor

Bands, in part
All of my spirited googling of favorite bands and the word synths to find out what they used has led me down a bunch of paths exploring other bands they mentioned in articles I didn't read in the 90s because the internet just wasn't really like that back in the day?
I mean, I guess we had AOL and stuff, but when I was going to indie rock shows in like 1994-2001 I did not read anything about these bands.
So here's an unordered list of favorites, inspiration, and stuff on my list to check out:
Stereolab (I think I've made that clear enough)
Tortoise (by way of The Sea and Cake)
The Sea and Cake (but not really for this purpose)
Spacemen 3 (VERY much for this purpose: synths plus guitar plus space yes that more please)
The Verve (A Storm In Heaven only, really, which I was just reminded of due to the guitar warble in my ears from a Slowdive record)
Slowdive (I heard of this band for the first time yesterday I think)
Spiritualized (see also Spacemen 3)
Animal Collective (but, like, less intense, omg)
LCD Soundsystem (but, like, idk if I have the patience)
M.I.A. (Kala, mostly)
A Tribe Called Quest (for sampling)
Arcade Fire
Fleet Foxes
Vampire Weekend (the three bands the whole family generally agrees on, even if the boy acts like he's not into any of this stuff anymore now that he's developed his own taste which is somehow a mix of modern novelty songs and Herbie Hancock's 1970s fusion-adjacent stuff, ok, kid, you be you, fine)
Mexican Institute of Sound (for fun)
Manu Chao (for the spirit)
Jovanotti (that one live album with all the italian hip-hop attempts, oh, wait, maybe I should sample that?)
Zoé (a Mexican Krautrock band I stumbled across the day before yesterday, maybe, because they had a song called Omnichord? Or was that yesterday? Yesterday was a long day.)
Neu (because Stereolab, but mostly the first white-red album)
Leonard Cohen (but the I'm Your Man album with all the silly stuff)
There will probably be more. There are probably already more. There were probably more before. I'll keep making lists here, because everybody knows making lists is an important part of making music.

Day 3:  #mayvinylchallenge : Instrumental Record Don't mind my mess.  I'm a slothy creative. There are a lot of instrumental records I could have chose...but it would have been slightly unfair or at best, an abridged bending of the theme.  Herbie Hancock's "Head Hunters"?  Did that in a previous May Vinyl Challenge.  Frank Zappa's "Hot Rats"?  "Willie The Pimp" renders it only semi-instrumental.  So, to keep it 100, I chose: 🔺️ Tortoise - Standards [2001] A sonic blast of rhythmic revolution is the only way to describe the fourth album from the Chicago post-rock unit.  Utilizing and incorporating more electronic elements in their music more than the previous three albums, "Standards", in my opinion, carves out a fresh lane for a new millennium and year, unknowingly setting a sonic tone for a year that would witness a catastrophic tragedy seven months after its release. From the opening blasts of the first track "Seneca", the Star-Spangled Banneresque bombast shakes you free of the previous jazzy efforts of their album "TNT", and sets you up for whatever comes your way.  And once the distorted drums drop in...you're off to the races with some distorto-manipulated post-rock, with slight hip hop and funk elements (trust me...I find the funk in everything).  The tracks flow through different vibes, but it all remains under the style and shimmer of the Tortoise sound.  And maybe I am crazy, the instrumentation of the song "Speakeasy" gives me "Elevators" by Outkast vibe... "Standards" is a Tortoise classic, setting the stage for the future experimentation that would grace later releases. Today's theme, brought to you by:  @michaellang256 Vinyl Challenge Conduit:  @jennn_erator 📷:  @rosemcgiggles Album cover photo:  LeBraneIV #vinylcommunity #vinylchallenge #vinyllust #vinyllife #vinyl #vinylcollector #records #wreckastow #mayvinylchallenge #instrumentalrecord #tortoise #standards #postrock #dopeness #chrislebrane https://www.instagram.com/p/CdG9q3mvGgp/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

You think like each animal has their own language or sound they communicate by?
Languages in Beastars
I honestly hadn't considered this before! Thanks for the ask! I rambled a lot here, but I did try to cut it down a bit!
I did have to rewrite this entirely from my memory as Tumblr ate the original, but I still hope it's okay, Anon!
— Psychic
.
.
.
General Headcanons
In the current day, there are two main languages; the Language of the Land and the Language of the Sea.
During the time of Life Animals and Nature Animals, there was another language. It is from this Old Langauge that the Land Language is derived.
However, this third language is considered to be dead.
There are also species-specific languages, however, even these are only spoken by a few animals.
.
.
.
Species-Specific Languages
Most species do not have a specific langauge unique to them.
Rather, there are countless forms of non-verbal communication that are used.
These could be considered “langauges”, however, they are more commonly referred to as just “social behaviour”.
Social behaviour is rewarded, punished and reinforced by the particular animal’s place of birth, their native culture, and the culture they grow up in.
While certain behaviours are more or less universal, other behaviours are unique to specific animals, or may carry different meanings depending on the particular animal.
For example, canine and canine-adjacent species communicate non-verbally via their tails and ears.
A canine with a wagging tail is likely happy.
A cat with a flicking or lashing tail is likely agitated or annoyed.
In terms of verbal communication, growls, hissing, panting, baaing, and similar noises are also commonplace.
These are often involuntary actions and sounds; like saying “ow” when you have been hurt, or sneezing.
You can train yourself to not rely on these things, but most animals opt not to.
Thus, when the term “species-specific language” is given, it refers mainly to the behaviours explained above.
.
.
.
Accounting for Generations
“Most species do not have a specific langauge unique to them.”
Exceptions to this apply.
Long-lived animal species, such as tortoises, are considered to be the last link between the Land Language, and the Old Language.
Being longer-lived typically ensures that the animal’s culture, oral traditions and certain social behaviours do not diminish much over time.
With other species, it is not atypical for the things mentioned above to disappear, be forgotten, or otherwise become lost.
In an attempt to explain this phenomenon a bit better, we should look to the Carni-Herbi War, which was 100 years ago.
One generation is typically 25 years.
Thus, for most species, the Carni-Herbi War lies outside of living memory; i.e, it was 4 generations ago.
Conversely, for long-lived species, 100 years in the past may only be 1 or 2 generations ago.
This being said, with the Carni-Herbi War being a century ago, imagine how long ago the time of Life Animals and Nature Animals was.
Ultimately, animals with a lengthy lifespan would have less generations between then and the present day when compared to animals with an average lifespan.
.
.
.
Remnants of the Old Language
As was discussed above, animals with an above-average lifespan are considered an important link to the Old Language.
Bits and pieces of the Old Language survive through them, along with elements of the past’s culture.
Unfortunately though, these remnants of the Old Language can disappear easily.
This can be attributed to rapid urbanisation, and a lack of appropriate protections for these particularly long-lived animals.
Still, with appropriate funding and due diligence, the last connection to Life Snimals and Nature Animals can be preserved.

The Symbolism behind the Japanese Children’s game Kagome Kagome and Inuyasha: The Final Act Episode 16
ooc: This episode of the Final Act is one of my favorites and contains so much symbolism within the haunting chant Hitomiko sings. Symbolism that seems to go over most fans heads. There are many meanings and interpretations, but one meaning stood out to me. It was how the song represents a convict waiting to be executed.
“Kagome, Kagome.  You are no more than a bird in a cage” The word Kagome can mean circle or caged bird, leading me to believe this represents the person in the center of the circle. The next line representing that the bird or person is imprisoned.
“In the dark before day, both a crane and tortoise slipped and fell”  Both the crane and tortoise symbolize life. Thus them slipping represents bad luck or the coming of death
“Who’s behind you now?” The bird aka the prisoner is wondering who their executioner will be. So this line can be interpreted as, “who is your executioner”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Long ago, Hitmiko played the game with her friends. When they technically asked her “who is your executioner” she turned around and saw Naraku. Naraku then ends up killing her several years later. He was technically Hitomiko’s executioner.
The same thing happens when Kagome realizes the meaning within her name. She asks herself who’s behind her only to see Naraku through Hitomiko. In accordance with the song, had Naraku succeeded, he would have been Kagome’s executioner as well. Perhaps the spiderwebs represent the prison Kagome was trapped in and Hitomiko represented the crane and the tortoise. Hitomiko might even represent Kagome’s doubt that she can even save her, Naraku using Hitomiko in a way that prevents Kagome from realizing where exactly she needed to shoot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After all, Naraku continuously said to shoot Hitmiko within the spider mark would condemn Hitomiko to hell. Subsequently, Kagome avoided using her bow from fear that she would condemn them both. It was only when Kagome correctly identified where Naraku was that she could see the light within Hitomiko’s chest, allowing her to use her bow.
Furthermore, I read something interesting that said the game continues until the person in the center can correctly identify the person behind them. Hitomiko failed, guessing one of her friends when Naraku appeared behind her. So the cycle repeated with Kagome until she correctly guessed where Naraku was. Herby ending the cycle and allowing her to access her spiritual powers to release them both from the prison of spider webs.

My mummy has come back! It’s been a long week without you mummy, nanny and grandpa took good care of me whilst you were sicky, but I’m very happy to have you back. I’ve been missing you and I’m glad that the scary thing was only a mild case. 🐢😊
(Thank you to everyone who was so supportive of me and my tortoise from my last post, I did have all the symptoms of the COVID 19, but thankfully it was only a mild case. It goes to show how united we all are even in the smallest of cases. I legit wept a little at all the support from people)

📍 at the peacock pub with @adrianrourke.
Tumblr media
"Sir,” Monika said, leaning on the bar, “I’d like the strongest drink you have. And also a wine spritzer in case I don’t like it.” She’d been at the bar for all of five minutes before the siren’s call of liquid courage had lured her over to the bar. The venue was already set up for the night’s festivities, tables arranged in neat order to facilitate two dozen rounds of speed dating. It hadn’t been her idea to go; the suggestion had come from a colleague at school, who recommended The Peacock Pub’s bi-monthly lightning-round social networking event. But she felt silly standing there as the bartender mixed her cocktails, clad in a pressed white cotton summer dress, handmade tortoise shell earrings dangling precariously from each lobe. It felt like something she’d joke about to Abel (’Who needs romance when you can date twenty people in an hour?’), a hypothetical scenario she’d present to Cooper (’Can you imagine? I’d probably start showing pictures of the cats when I ran out of things to say!’), and an experience she would definitely be telling Rhiannon later on (’Can you believe that I went speed dating?’)
Truthfully, she felt like she was in the wrong. In a way, it felt like cheating. But she wasn’t in a relationship, not really, not in the conventional naming of terms and establishment of boundaries. The resurgence of wistful, maybe-we-could-be-more-than-friends feelings had gone undisclosed since Abel’s return to Philadelphia, locked away in a heart-shaped box in her chest. So this was nothing. Inconsequential. That’s what she’d convince herself. Eventually.
With two glasses set in front of her ⏤ bubbly white wine and soda, garnished with a lemon wedge, and an unidentifiable red cocktail in a tumbler ⏤ Monika requested to start a tab and looked over the room. People arriving more frequently than when she’d walked in. With a sip of her spritzer, she gave herself a mental pep talk. You can do this. You will do this. It’s one night out. Make the best of it. She exhaled slowly and took another sip as another attendee approached the bar next to her and placed an order. He smelled good, but her attention was especially piqued when he spoke. Australian. It added to his mystery. Immediately her fingers started drumming on the bar top, polished nails drilling a steady beat on the wood. She wouldn’t let her nerves get the best of her. Not tonight.
In one swift, determinative move, Monika lifted the tumbler to her lips and drained the glass of its unknown contents. Fire burned down her throat. Was it meant to be sipped and not taken like a shot? Well. It was too late for that consideration. What was it? It tasted strong and herby, like anise-flavored gasoline, and she wondered what she’d done. “Oh my god,” she said in horror, turning to the stranger at her side. “I think I just drank absinthe.” Manners were not lost on her. Extending a hand abruptly, the bangles adorning her wrist jangling accordingly, she added: “Oh, I’m Monika, by the way. You’re here for the speed dating, too?”

Record #404: John McLaughlin - Extrapolation (1969)
In the late 1960s, Miles Davis was at a crossroads.
His last few albums, Nefertiti, Miles in the Sky, and Filles de Kilimanjaro, found the jazz icon pushing desperately against the conventions of his industry. Nefertiti played with the roles of the traditional jazz combo. Miles in the Sky and Filles saw his rhythm section (including the legend in his own right, Herbie Hancock) moving towards electric instruments.
While writing the masterpiece In a Silent Way, Miles wanted to do something truly revolutionary (spoiler alert: he succeeded).
As the legends are told, the night before one of the recording sessions, drummer Tony Williams introduced Miles to newcomer John McLaughlin, an electric guitarist. Miles was so impressed that he invited McLaughlin to the studio the next day. Over the next several years, McLaughlin would become a fixture in Miles’ band. There’s even a song on Bitches Brew named after him.
But it wasn’t just Miles’ group. John McLaughlin would become a ubiquitous presence in the jazz fusion scene of the 1970s, playing with Larry Coryell, Stanley Clarke, rock giants Jack Bruce and Santana, and leading the power house fusion group Mahavishnu Orchestra.
And judging by this, his debut album, it’s easy to see why he would become such a giant in the scene. This isn’t nearly as out there as most of what he’d go on to make. Save for his electric guitar, this album is played by a traditional jazz combo—upright bass, saxophone, and drums. There are moments that sound reminiscent of a pre-free Coltrane.
Until he comes tearing down his fretboard. His playing is mostly tied to conventional jazz technique, especially on the twin lines he plays with the bari sax. But every once in a while, some rock and roll sneaks in. Some of his parts (”Argen’s Bag” in particular) foreshadow some of the more cerebral post rock acts like Tortoise or Collections of Colonies of Bees.
Often, debut albums from pioneers are little more than a curiosity. They offer glimpses of the genius that is to come, but are still too tied to convention to be satisfying. And in jazz, even the best sidemen have put out mediocre albums as band leaders. But Extrapolation is neither of those. This is a debut befitting his legend.
