“You have won,” the ram’s voice bleated from the shadows. “Take your prize, hero.” Eliot picked up the golden crown of the High King of Fillory. With an inarticulate cry he threw it like a discus off into the darkness.” The Magicians, Lev Grossman

Magicians fic fact help requested
Hi, everyone! This is a fact I need for a Queliot fic I'm writing. I'm looking for something very specific: the time when Eliot is complaining that Fillory doesn't understand the concept of democracy, because he asked everyone to choose a representative and one province selected a sword. I need to find the actual reference. Does anyone recall which episode this is? Thanks!

there really is something to be said IMO for, like, sometimes if you're a person prone to making yourself feel crazy and miserable all the time by thinking a million thoughts an hour about how everything is hard and everything feels miserable and you are bad at all of it so why bother, actually it can be very valuable to do something in the actual external world that is like actually hard and feels kind of miserable and that you suck at. or, it can be very valuable to do things in the actual external world generally, including things that are hard, and including things that feel miserable, and including things that you suck at. so many improvements in my ability to feel okay operating in my life day to day stem from stuff that sucked but that sucked for like, real reasons. the magicians does this to some degree with both quentin and (more successfully ultimately, through the portion of the show i acknowledge as canon) eliot and i really appreciate it, because from the outside, like, having to be the king of a deranged magic country you only just heard of and having to impregnate your virgin wife and never being able to go to earth and dealing with stealth fairy invasion, that shouldn't, on paper, be easier than, like, going to magic grad school where you live with all your friends and are good at magic and cheating your way through classes when the need arises and throwing parties and mixing tacky drinks you've convinced yourself are cool and getting laid a lot. like, objectively, the king thing is harder. most people, forced to pick between those two options, would immediately choose the one that involves sleeping in and living on earth. but it makes such perfect and complete emotional sense to me that for eliot it's the opposite, and one of them is a shiny surface thinly covering up a whole bunch of mess ready to start a steady and ugly implosion at the first provocation, and the other, like, fixes him, kinda. it makes sense to me that one of them is fun and one of them is horrible and it's the one that feels worse in the moment that leads to him feeling better in like his own actual human skin, because that's the one that's real. to me that feels so right and so true. for a lot of reasons, but one of them is something about: if you don't feel like a real person you're never in ten billion years going to talk yourself into believing you're a real person. but if you manage to wind up in a position where you have to interact with the real world where things matter and you can't escape it anymore, eventually you will receive feedback that tells you you also exist. and the shitty parts help in this project too, because, like, you can't bruise a leg that isn't there, right?

Series Summary:
Eliot finds among Jane Chatwin’s things perhaps a way to bring back Quentin—but it comes at an enormous personal cost: during the ritual, Eliot is stripped of his Shade completely. Violently ripping the reigning Dark King from the throne, Eliot assumes the mantle of Dark High King—a truly malevolent force who will do anything to get Quentin back. Even if it means he becomes somebody the man he loves won’t recognize when Eliot rescues Quentin from the Underworld. By any means necessary.

me when anyone asks about my favourite character from the magicians..
(ok so eliot grows from a naughty, rebellious, alcoholic witty queen dandy boy, sophistic genius to a miserable maladjusted high king, to a noble adventurer, to a life long lover, to a deposed royal, to a damsel in distress, to a monster god, to a heart broken young man, to a healing young man, with leadership skills.)

starting a book tag game ^-^
Favorite books: Dhalgren by Samuel R Delany, Sisters of Dorley by Alyson Greaves, American Gods by Neil Gaiman, Piranesi by Susanna Clarke, House of Leaves, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, anything by Kurt Vonnegut
Favorite authors: Kurt Vonnegut, Stephen King, Jack Kerouac, Charles Bukowski, William S Burroughs, Hunter S Thompson, Alyson Greaves
Favorite genres: Postmodernism, beat generation, road stories, horror, forcefem
Book(s) you're currently reading: Sisters of Dorley by Alyson Greaves, Going Postal by Terry Pratchett, Pet Sematary by Stephen King, Post Office by Charles Bukowski, I Am Pilgrim by Terry Hayes, End of Watch by Stephen King, and Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts are all in my rotation right now, especially I Am Pilgrim. It's a shitty little thriller that I picked up just to get a feel for the genre after enjoying Billy Summers by Stephen King!
Books on your to read list: Gravity's Rainbow, Infinite Jest, Ham on Rye, We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson, Lord of the Rings
Books you loved as a child: Magic Treehouse, Percy Jackson, Charlie Bone, Captain Underpants, Warriors, A to Z Mysteries. realizing i was incredibly into book serieses rather than one off books wow
Preferred book length: considering about 100k-120k as an average length book i think i really like when a book is longer than 200k words. really give me a whole big world to explore, yknow.
Books you couldn't finish: 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami is like the only book in recent memory that ive had to just stop reading. the way he writes characters thoughts is so stilted and unnatural sounding i just hated it. which sucks because i really loved the story a whole lot, especially with the cult storyline.
Fiction or nonfiction: in general i heart fiction but i also really like reading books like the electric acid kool acid test, suspected hippie in transit, on the road, and queer and junky by william burroughs. books about real life people's Adventures
Buy, borrow from library, or read online: Unfortunately i am a buycel i love the feeling of reading a physical book but i take too long to read books to borrow them from a library
Author you've read the most of, but DON'T recommend: Stephen King (has read 40+ of his books, which as an aside is insane to think about)
Favorite book character: Eliot Rosewater from funny kurt vonnegut!!!!!! or piranesi from piranesi. im a big fan of the dreamish lover type characters
If you at some point stopped reading but then started again, what book/books got you into reading again: i read a lot in elementary school but then read barely any in middle school and freshman year of high school and what finally got me back into reading was stephen king :)
tagging ANYONE WHO WANTS TO!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE! and please tag me in the post :)
