Designing my friend a Golden Kamuy Skateboard deck! Only have the sketch half way done so this is all i got at the moment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m working with Newfields’ horticulture department (also known as The IMA/The Indianapolis Museum of Art) to design some graphics of native Hoosier plants in their pollinator garden. The yellow flower is the American Senna and the pink one is the Eastern Red Columbine.

Hey, Leckie, your parents ever send you your dress blues? - That joke stopped being funny a year ago, Hoosier. I just thought you might want to get spiffed up. Battalion's holding a lottery.
- What's the prize? A bullet in the head?
A ticket home.

Chapter 3- The Letter
Tumblr media
Summary: The US Navy had fled allowing the Japanese control of the sea, leaving the marines to fight the battle for Guadalcanal alone. They were vastly undersupplied, and many were on the verge of starvation and some at the mercy of malaria. As thousands of Japanese reinforcements poured onto the island, Kate, Blanche, and the boys were strafed and bombed relentlessly. It was during these harsh times Kate found herself becoming closer to the guys and in a constant state of worry when Hoosier isn't where she could hear or see him.

Guadalcanal
September 1942
“What’s wrong with him?” Sgt Stone asked Kate while she kneeled over a young marine.
She had been holding a thermometer to the man’s mouth, and when she removed it, it read 105.
“His temp is 105. He’s clammy and sweating bullets but says he feels cold-has to be malaria, sarge.” Kate finalized with a frown.
Sgt Stone shook his head, “He’s the fifth marine to catch this shit.”
“He won’t survive here if he stays. I don’t have anything to treat him with since that cruiser sank with all the supplies we needed.”
Sgt Stone nodded, “I’ll try to arrange for transport if it’s available. We’re pretty much on our own out here.”
Kate nodded, “I’ll do what I can for him, sir.”
~~~~~~~
H Company was due to push forward the following day upon hearing D Company making contact with the enemy some 15 miles ahead. The men were instructed to police their gear to be ready by 0500 the next morning for the convoy. Around sunset, Hoosier scavenged beyond the camp for anything palatable to bring back to his buddies and himself for dinner.
Leckie, Runner, Chuckler, Sid, and Gibson sat in a 7’ by 8’ foxhole they had dug for all of them to fit in.
As darkness engulfed the island and thunder rolled through, Hoosier returned with chow.
“Supper’s on, supper’s on.” he announced as he jumped into the hole.
“Anything good?” Gibson asked hopefully.
“What are those?” Runner asked skeptically.
“Army rations from 1918. Quartermaster at Dog Company claims they’re edible-” Hoosier began as he handed each of them a small, unmarked package of food.
He noticed the look of disgust stretching across each of their faces as they tried biting into the stale hard-tack crackers that were stiff enough to crack their teeth.
“-after you suck on them for about an hour or two.” Hoosier added.
“This is all you could find?” Chuckler asked.
“You fuckin’ forage next time.” Hoosier spat back.
They all begrudgingly continued to eat.
Kate appeared kneeling over the edge of their foxhole.
“Hey, guys. Just making rounds. Everyone doin’ ok?” she asked.
“Yeah, just havin’ some dinner while Leckie reads us his letter to his girl back home.” Runner replied playfully.
“Who said I was writing to anyone?” Leckie retorted.
“Come on, you can tell us. Go on, read it.” Chuckler pushed.
“We’d do it for you.” Runner added.
“Guys, leave him alone.” Kate chuckled, knowing it was all in good fun.
Leckie shook his head and returned to writing on his pad of paper.
“So, you guys are ok, then?” Kate reiterated.
They collectively responded, “yeah yeah,” knowing she’d keep on them until they answered her.
“Ok, good. Make sure you keep hydrating, too. See you guys later.” she reminded them before standing and walking off.
“Speaking of girls; how’s that bet going Hoosier?” Runner asked.
“I’d say I’m in the lead.” he stated assertively.
“That’s because I’m giving you a head start! She won’t be able to resist me once I’ve unleashed my charm on her.” Chuckler countered.
“Yeah, and he’s a Corporal now! The ladies love rank.” Runner pointed out.
Hoosier scoffed, “Yeah? Well, I don’t think she’s that type of girl. She’s not impressed by the number of stripes on a marine’s sleeves.”
“How would you know?” Chuckler asked.
“I had a little visit with her yesterday. Sat and talked to her for about two hours sipping on that shit Jap wine that we had left.” Hoosier revealed.
They all stared at him waiting for him to continue, but he remained silent knowing the anticipation was killing them.
“And!?” Leckie prompted.
“And she told me she was only here to do her part for her country by keeping us alive. No matter what I said or did to “charm” her, she went right back into talkin’ about medical mumbo-jumbo or about her two brothers in the 101st airborne,” he paused, “she’s actually real smart.” Hoosier explained.
“Well, maybe you just don’t got it like I do.” Chuckler returned.
Hoosier laughed, “Have it at, pal, I’m tellin’ ya, she’s a tough cookie to crumble. She doesn’t melt over the same things most dames do. You’ll have your work cut out for you.”
“We’ll see!” Chuckler shot back confidently.
~~~~~~~
By midafternoon the next day, H Company caught up with D Company, setting up outlook posts about a mile away in case the enemy approached. With an entire battalion in the same area, a proper aid station was available with tables and cots to tend to the wounded and sick. There was also a chow tent serving hot meals which none of the men have seen in weeks.
Hoosier, Leckie, Chuckler, and Runner sat in a semi-circle with their plates of hot rice.
“I hear the army finally landed.” Leckie shared.
“Nice of them to join the party.” Runner stated sarcastically.
“They have no idea what they’re walking into.” Chuckler added.
“Yeah, well word is they came with loads of crates filled with some good shit.” Hoosier voiced.
“Oh yeah?” Leckie asked, his interest piqued.
“Maybe we can get at some of that!” Chuckler suggested.
“If you do, see if you can get some clean bandages, and some morphine. And get me some goddam scissors, I can’t get any.” Kate requested as she walked past the group after hearing them scheming about the army supply delivery.
“Yes, ma’am!” Chuckler confirmed enthusiastically as he shot a cheeky grin at Hoosier.
Hoosier released an exasperated sigh as he rolled his eyes at him,
“You’re a fuckin’ idiot, Juergens.”

~~~~~~~
As the Army staged the dozens of wooden crates and drawstring laundry bags on the beach, an air raid siren sounded off alerting the men of an enemy attack. The newcomer soldiers, unaware that the siren was signifying the attack on the airfield and not the beach, started running for cover leaving the boxes and bags unattended and up for grabs.
Tumblr media
The marines waiting in the brush of the jungle like predators waiting to pounce, watched as the last few soldiers disappeared before they took advantage of the situation.
Platoons of marines scattered out of the tree line like roaches, breaking open boxes and foot lockers, and dumping bags to grab what they could before the army came back.
Hoosier found a good-sized crate with a red cross insignia painted on it.
“Has to be scissors in here.” he thought outloud to himself.
He looked around and found a crowbar lying on the ground. Snatching it up, he got to work on opening the box. As he removed the final nail, he pushed the cover off revealing an assortment of medical supplies to include cases of morphine and first aid kits.
Hoosier scanned the area around him, “Hey Runner! Come here!”
Runner trotted over to him and looked into the box, “Nice, you found the medic supply.”
“Help me grab a few of these, will ya?” Hoosier asked as he handed him a couple cases of morphine.
“Why don’t you ask Chuckler?” Runner teased as he tucked the box under is arm.
Hoosier laughed, “You snooze, you lose.”
Runner snickered as he grasped the handles of three syrette cans in his right hand while slinging a sack filled with tactically acquired treasures over his left shoulder.
Leckie ran over, “Here! Throw some of those in the bag so we can carry more back.”
He presented a large empty duffel bag for Hoosier to throw more syrette cases and first aid kits in.
“Perfect.” Hoosier commended.
As he tossed as many as he could into the bag, the army rushed back shooing the marines away. The marines took off running towards their camp, each cackling triumphantly at the soldiers behind them.
~~~~~~~
After the excitement settled down, Hoosier, Chuckler, Sid, Gibson and Runner sat in a more secluded area of camp shifting through the prizes they obtained. Leckie sauntered up while carrying his drawstring bag of goods, sporting his new pair of moccasin slippers to the foxhole as a campfire kindled.
“Anything happen while I was prospecting?” Leckie asked the group outloud.
“Betty Hutton stopped by giving out blowjobs,” Hoosier replied, “What’d you get?”
Leckie took a seat on the log and showed off the items he got. While he was handing out cans of peaches to the guys, Kate approached them.
“Hey, guys, did you hear that the army was looted during the air raid earlier toda-”
She stopped a few feet behind Hoosier as Chuckler was waving a can of peaches at Runner who had been sitting by the tree line with his pants down dealing with a bad case of diarrhea.
“Peaches? I’ve got the goddam runs, and you had to get peaches.” Runner hissed at Leckie.
“They were all out of cheese, Runner.” Leckie called back.
The puzzle pieces started to come together as she looked over the scene in front of her. She noticed Leckie with a pair of comfy patent leather house shoes on, the multiple cans of fruit, and the brand-new M-1 rifles next to each man where they sat. She watched as Leckie excitedly carved an opening in his can, eager to eat the peaches and drink the nectar inside.
“Uh, Bob, you’ll wanna take that slowly,” she cautioned, “you haven’t had real food for weeks, you might-”
“I’ll be fine, Ace.” Leckie insisted cutting her off.
Not at all heeding her warning, he inhaled the peaches and sugary liquid from his can. He slowly lowered it looking suddenly alarmed and pale, apparently regretting his hasty decision. He began gagging as he rushed over not too far from where Runner was and vomited the peaches he just consumed onto the grass in front of him.
Runner laughed at Leckie, pleased and entertained by his misery.
Tumblr media
“Ugh, I told you, Leckie.” Kate pointed out with her hands on her hips shaking her head at him.
The others sniggered as they slowly ate from their cans so as not to end up like Leckie.
“Well, I was going to ask if you guys heard the air raid siren earlier, but I assume you did.” she continued as she crossed her arms in a motherly fashion.
The guys responded with a collective, “Mmhm.”
She waited, her lips pursed together as she scanned each of them with skepticism to see if they’d own up to what they had been doing during the air raid. They remained quiet, hanging their heads as they avoided eye contact with her while eating their peaches. She already knew, though. She just wanted to see if they’d confess without her outright asking them. She shook her head again, deciding it best to let it go.
“Hey, Ace-” Runner called out to Kate, “my ass is killing me, can’t you do anything about this??” he begged.
“Is there blood?” Kate asked invasively outloud in front of the guys.
Runner’s eyebrows creased together inquisitively, “Huh?”
Kate huffed irritably and walked closer to Runner, “Is there blood in your stool?” she clarified, speaking slowly. The others groaned in disgust, each placing their cans down.
“Um-” Runner looked over his shoulder, “-no.”
“Ok, good,” she stated as she turned on her heel to walk back, “When you’re finished relieving yourself over there, come see me. The nurses over at Dog Company gave me a case of sodium solution that can help that.”
Kate walked past the group, “Enjoy your haul, you hooligans.” she said with a playful smile, winking at Hoosier as they made eye contact when she passed.
Leckie slumped back onto the ground across from Hoosier, “When are you giving her the morphine and shit?”
“Tonight.” Hoosier affirmed.
“No way! You found her some morphine? What about bandages? And scissors!? How!?” Chuckler asked genuinely befuddled when Hoosier nodded.
“Simple, I looked for it.” Hoosier responded smugly as he leaned back on his elbows.
The guys laughed as Chuckler grimaced, resentfully drinking more juice from his can.
~~~~~~~
That night as Hoosier was preparing the aid kits and morphine to bring to Kate and Blanche, fire clouds exploded in the distance and were steadily progressing closer towards them. Japanese aircraft’s were heading towards them dropping bombshells in their wake.
Whatever man wasn’t under the safety of cover dove into the nearest foxhole they could get to.
Tumblr media
Enemy aircrafts soared over H and D Company posts, relentlessly deploying one bomb after the other as they passed. Multiple men shouting to take cover, and some crying out in fear, there was nothing they could do other than wait it out.
The following morning, every marine across the camp that wasn’t injured or stuck beneath the sand was either digging to find survivors that were buried alive or carrying the wounded to the medical personnel. The entire site was in shambles with Jeeps destroyed and burned to a crisp while fallen palm trees lay across where the men’s foxholes were, trapping marines' underneath.
The hustle and bustle of the aid station was never ending. Kate and Blanche along with a few Dog Company medics and a couple of nurses scampered from one man to another trying to keep them alive while able marines brought more wounded on stretchers.
“Put him on that table there!” Kate directed to the men who brought another marine with a wound to his right leg.
Kate rushed over, “What do we got?”
“Right thigh wound. He said shrapnel impaled him after one of the explosions went off right by him when he was running for cover.” one of the men explained quickly.
Kate tore through the pantleg to get to the wound. She knew right away by the saturation of the blood that the artery was severed.
“Blanche! Bring me gauze, sulfur and bandages! I need to pack this, NOW!” Kate yelled across the floor.
Blanche hurried over with what Kate needed, unraveling the long bandage and opening a bottle of sulfur to clot the wound. Kate balled up the end of the dressing, pushing it down deep into the gash packing it as tight as she could. The man shrieked and bawled, kicking and grabbing at Kate to escape the torture.
“Jesus, hold him down! I can’t do this if he’s moving around like that!” Kate bellowed.
The two men that brought him in pinned him down by his arms while Blanche secured his legs by his ankles. Kate layered the bandage hard into his wound, then when she couldn’t fit anymore, she placed a padded bandage over the top wrapping the ends snug around the thigh tying it down to maintain pressure. The bleeding had finally stopped.
Kate took a syrette and injected it into the meatier part of the marine’s shoulder.
“Take him over there where the rest of ‘em are.” Kate panted as she weakly motioned over to the treated casualties, recovering in the shade of a hanging tarp.
“You doing ok, Kate?” Blanche asked.
Kate nodded, “Did you see Sid?”
“No, thank goodness,” Blanche breathily replied, “What about Hoosier?”
Kate looked at her shocked, “Well, no. But I haven’t seen Leckie, Chuckler, Gibson, or Runner either.” she added.
Blanche raised an eyebrow at her best friend, “Honey, I know you fancy the man. You don’t have to hide it from me.”
“I don’t know what you’re-”
“Ssshhh...” Blanche shushed Kate placing her fore finger over Kate’s lips, “your secret is safe with me.”
 Kate scoffed at her then rolled her eyes, “We got more work to do.”
She turned around and made herself busy with the next injured marine.
~~~~~~~
Kate sat alone behind the rickety medic shelter, taking a minute to let her brain rest by closing her eyes and humming a tune quietly to herself. The hum of her voice slowly became words as she sang the song softly outloud.
“There you are.” Hoosier’s voice came crashing through Kate’s tranquil thoughts.
Kate gasped as her heart and body jumped from surprise.
“Bill, you have GOT to stop sneaking up on me like that!” she told him clutching the front of her uniform.
Hoosier chuckled, “I am sorry, I really don’t mean to.”
Tumblr media
Kate released a long exhale, “Glad to see you’re ok, though.” she admitted looking up at him through her eyelashes as he stood over her.
“You, too.” he returned.
Kate blushed, smiling weakly as she looked down at her lap. She looked behind him and noticed a dog sniffing around.
"Looks like you got yourself a new friend." she acknowledged.
Hoosier looked over his shoulder, "Yeah, after all the bombings last night this little fella slipped into our foxhole, so I grabbed him. Hasn't left my side since." he explained.
Tumblr media
The dog looked up at him as if he knew Hoosier was talking about him.
"He's adorable." Kate cooed.
“I have something for you.” Hoosier declared.
“For me?”
“Yep. But you need to close your eyes.” he instructed.
Kate narrowed her eyes in suspicion, “Why?”
“Trust me.” he insisted grinning proudly.
Tumblr media
Kate clicked her tongue at him but closed her eyes as he requested.
“Hold out your hand.”
She presented her hand palm up in front of her.
"Stay." she heard him command to the dog.
She felt his calloused palm gently slip under hers. His surprisingly tender touch sent electrical currents up her arm and through the rest of her body. She almost wasn’t able to contain her shudder.
Just then, she felt a hard slender object placed on her palm as he slowly removed his hand from under hers.
“Ok, you can look now.” Hoosier told her.
Kate opened her eyes, face to face with Hoosier kneeling right in front of her, his eyes as blue as the water behind him. She looked down at her hand to find a pair of scissors.
Kate’s eyes widened with excitement as she smiled at him.
Tumblr media
“You got me scissors!” she squealed throwing her arms around his neck pulling him into a hug.
Hoosier chuckled as he loosely embraced Kate around her torso, “Yeah, I found a crate full of first aid kits and morphine and grabbed you a whole bunch of ‘em.”
Kate leaned back looking at him in disbelief, “You did?”
Hoosier nodded, “Leckie and Runner helped, too so we could get as much for you as we could. I brought them over and left them by the aid station for you. There are at least a dozen scissors over there so you’ll never run out of them again.”
Kate’s heart almost rocketed out of her chest.
“You didn’t get anything for yourself while you were out there?”
“Nah, I don’t need much.” he dismissed.
She beamed adoringly at him and pulled him back for another hug.
“You missed your chance to get something for yourself to get me what I needed? Thank you.” she whispered to him.
He squeezed her tighter, “Of course.” he purred back.
They pulled away slowly, still smiling at eachother. Kate patted Hoosier’s shoulder before standing up.
“I’m going to go take a look at those kits before anyone tries to get their mitts on them.” Kate proclaimed as she headed towards the casualty collection point.
Hoosier fixated on Kate as she walked away. He was lost in a daydream relishing the feeling of her pinned against him when they hugged. It was the closest feeling to home he’s felt since he got to Guadalcanal.
Kate stopped and turned to Hoosier, “You comin’?”
Hoosier snapped out of his trance and clumsily scurried over to join her for the walk back to the aid station.
~~~~~~~
As D and H Company fixed up the camp as best they could, they returned to foxholes to keep watch of the line. Col Puller (known as ‘Chesty’ to the marines) disclosed intelligence that the enemy was going to try to take Matanikau which was south of the airfield where the Americans currently had control. Most of the battalion was to join the 5th and 1st marines there to help defend the coast road into the airfield to maintain that control. This meant that Dog Company would be entirely alone on the front lines as they relocate to sector 3 of the island. H Company had their own orders.
Hoosier and Runner were tasked to set up a listening and observation post 30 yards inside the treeline. While they were gathering their weapons and gear, Kate walked up with two ammo cans in her hand. A look of concern appeared across her face when she saw a tired rough looking Hoosier with his dog and Runner packing up gear behind him.
Tumblr media
“Where you two going?” she asked.
“We’re settin’ up a little less than a mile that way along the perimeter.” Runner replied pointing in the direction they were going to be heading.
“Oh?” Kate queried.
“Yeah, the Japs decided to go around us to hit the airfield. We got the first watch for two hours at sunset.” Hoosier explained.
Kate looked down at her boots inadvertently kicking at the sand, “I see.”
Hoosier stopped what he was doing to look her over and noticed what she had been holding.
“Whatchya got there, Ace?” he asked gesturing with his head at the small metal boxes.
Kate’s breath hitched in her throat as she looked up at Hoosier, “Oh-” she looked back down at the cans perplexed like they just appeared in her hands, “-it’s for you guys. I figured you’d need these more than me and Blanche.”
She walked closer to Runner and Hoosier handing them each a container. Runner opened the can and saw stacks of crackers neatly packed to the brim. Hoosier looked into Runner’s can, then beamed back at Kate.
“I heard you guys traded your saltines for the peaches and figured once you ran out of fruit you’d need more rations in the field. Good thing I caught you before you two took off.” she remarked.
“You’re giving us your food?” Runner asked utterly surprised while Hoosier gaped at her.
Kate’s eyebrows drew in together, “Of course. Someone’s gotta take care of you boys.”
Kate averted her eyes to Hoosier.  She blushed seeing he had been gazing at her the whole time, his lazy smile and droopy blue eyes, ready to worship the ground she walked on.
“We’re so lucky to have you.” Hoosier muttered.
“Yeah, thanks, Ace!” Runner said as he ascended into the cubby hole shelter they all built to share the fresh crackers with the rest of the group.
“Anytime, Runner!” Kate called out.
Hoosier, still smiling, walked towards Kate, leaving very little room between them when he reached her. Kate hiccupped when he stood inches from her, looking up at him with her sparkling green eyes.
“You didn’t have to do that, you know?” he asserted.
Kate grinned, “I know. You guys would do the same for me and Blanche.”
Hoosier’s smile widened, “Absolutely.”
“I have one other thing,” Kate stated as she dug into her dungaree pocket, “-here.”
She held a sealed envelope with the name ‘Bill’ written in cursive on the front. He took it from her and as he looked it over, he realized he didn’t recognize the handwriting.
He looked back at her, “Who’s this from?”
Kate laughed, “Me, silly!”
A smile returned to his face, “But why?”
“Well, I heard you saying something about Leckie having a girl back home to send letters to and that you didn’t. So, I wrote you one.” Kate explained.
Hoosier’s heart melted, practically becoming a puddle at his feet. He looked back at the letter smiling so hard his cheeks started to ache.
“Well, thank you Kate Danaher. That’s about the nicest thing that any broad has ever done for me.” he admitted.
“Glad to hear it. Oh, and you should wait to read it when you’re feeling crummy during one of your watches. It’ll cheer you up.” she insisted.
“What if I want to read it now?” Hoosier asked with a mischievous smile.
Kate laughed, “Defeats the purpose of me writing it for you! It’ll be worth the wait, cross my heart!” she promised as she drew a crisscross over her chest with her fingers. "-And when you do read it, you'll have to write me back. Those are the rules."
Hoosier was absolutely mesmerized by her childlike innocence.
“Ok, I’ll save it.” he pledged placing the letter in the breast pocket of his uniform.
Kate standing on her tiptoes snaked her arms over his shoulders pulling him into a hug as his arms instinctively embraced her pulling her flush against him.
“Please be careful. Both of you.” Kate whispered.
Hoosier’s heart pounding against his ribcage had his chest heaving as his strong hands kneaded Kate’s upper back. He nodded, agreeing to her request.
“Promise?” Kate implored.
“I swear it.” Hoosier reassured; his voice low and calm like a song to Kate’s ears.
Thanks for the lemonade
Note: I used the idea of meeting Hoosier and Chuckler for the first time as a basis for easing myself into fanfiction writing. It’s meant as an exercise so it’s pretty tame, but read along if you like. :)
Wordcount: 1262
Warning: smoking??
Pairing: Hoosier x Reader
Summary: You’re pouring lemonade at the nurses stand when two marines take your mind off of gloomy thinking with some cheerful chatting.
.
.
.
The sun was burning your cheeks as you poured cups of fresh lemonade for the row of tired marines lining up at the nurses’ stand. Some were watching you with expressions of confusion, some disbelief, some amusement and some were looking right through you, making you feel as hollow as the gaze with which they beheld you.
You poured as much care and gentleness as possible into every cup while you passed them into dirty hands. Every once in a while you heard croaky voices mutter “thanks or “ma’am” in your general direction, but most marines took the cups silently. You had seen and heard the horrible aftermath of battle in your time as a military nurse, but this was your first time looking into the faces of those still stuck in the nightmare from which some never wake. Feet dragging with the heaviness of knowing that each step taken is a step closer to their doom.
You thought of all the wounds of war you had healed and how only few of them would be as crippling as the one these men already carried. A wound that in the hospitals had been masked to you by the relief of escape.
“Too lovely a day to be frownin’ on isn’t it ma’am?”
The words interrupting your heavy thoughts were spoken by a tall dark-haired man that had just taken a cup of lemonade from your hand. He looked rather too battered to be speaking of lovely days you thought, but the friendly smile that shone on his grimy face suspended your disbelief for a moment.
“oh, I don’t know” you blinked at him, not wanting to disagree and started to pour another cup.
“Not exactly a sight for sore eyes eh?” – a slightly shorter man next to first one joked as you passed him some lemonade. You let an unsure smile graze your face as you studied them both for a hint of whether the comment was an invite for pity or for fun. Despite the appearance of it, you guessed that the second man to speak had fair hair underneath all that dust and muck.
He saw you hesitate and continued to speak;
“I clean up nice believe it or not, but unfortunately for my friend here he always looks sick as a dawg” he said and slapped the tall guy on the shoulder. That got a laugh out of you and you watched the taller guy scoff and roll his eyes, looking amused.
“Lotta ladies beg to differ” he replied smugly; “Ain’t that right Hoosier?”
“Ain’t right at all” the shorter guy retorted and caught your eye as you laughed at their banter.
Your laugh was about the sweetest thing the men had heard in a long time. Especially the one called Hoosier thought so and it made him straighten up a bit. In fact your laugh was just as sweet as you looked - cheeks red from the sun and loose strands of hair tucked behind your ears… Hoosier kept his appreciation to himself and hoped that you might extend the interaction with an answer. You noticed the anticipation.
“Well…” you smiled, deciding to join in on his joke, “the lemonade was supposed to liven you up a bit, but if your friend’s looking no better by tomorrow I’ll get you your money back.” Hoosier let out a chuckle at your reply. Not a full toothy grin but an upwards tug of the corner of his lips that despite its modesty reached his eyes. Bright eyes that bored into yours with what you thought was approval and suddenly hoped was a little more than that.
“Oi!” The taller man exclaimed with a grin as you shifted your eyes to him, “the friend has a name! I’m Chuckler” he said and stretched out a dirty hand towards you, taking no notice of your joke being on his expense.
“Chuckler?” You asked and shook his hand when an officer yelled in your direction.
“You two! Quit bothering the nurse! You’re holding up the line!” Chuckler let go of your hand and eyed the officer with blatant annoyance.
“Are we bothering you Ma’m?” he asked politely.
“Not at all…” You smiled at them. “But I don’t know if the same can be said for him” you looked discretely in the direction of the officer that had yelled, and was now staring intensely at the marines in front of you.
“Guess we better get movin… Thanks for the lemonade” Hoosier said and they both quickly emptied the small cups and put them down. Chuckler started moving away to neutralise the dissatisfaction of the glaring officer. Hoosier made to follow but then leaned back and offered you a handshake.
“‘Don’t believe I gotcher name, miss?” He said. The hand open in front of you was as dirty as the one his friend had offered, with scraped knuckles and dust that had settled in to darken every fine line. You were happy to take it.
“Y/L/N” you told him. You felt a tingle up your spine as his fingers closed around your small soft hand and gave it a squeeze.
“Y/N Y/L/N” you elaborated. His head was angled so his brow shielded his eyes from the sharp sun but you thought they glimmered still.
“Pleasure to meet ya, miss Y/L/N” he said “I’m-”
“Hoosier?” You interrupted and he nodded with an amused expression. You felt the name bear a weight on your tongue as if you had spoken a big important word whose meaning you had yet to discover.
“That’s right” he said still holding your hand. He let go with a slight jolt when Chuckler grabbed onto his shoulders with a tug.
“Officer’s getting real red in the face over there buddy” he said and Hoosier looked over nonchalantly. The officers jaw was tightly clenched, apparently debating what effect repeating himself would have.
“Looks like yer right” Hoosier commented and turned back to you.
“‘Scuse us Ma’am” he said and they left you to your task. You absentmindedly continued the repetitive motion of pouring and handing over cups of lemonade as you followed the two marines with your eyes.
In the tired oncoming of battle-worn men, it lifted your spirit to see good humor among some of them. Chuckler and Hoosier had made their way to a small group of marines who you guessed might be part of their company. Some of them were laughing and a few of them looking extremely tired, but all content in each others presence as they awaited orders on where to move.
Although he had his back turned you could see Hoosier pull a cigarette from his pocket and swiftly pull out a lighter after it. He let the cigarette hang loose from this lips as he lighted it with ease. You thought he moved with a sort of careless elegance, that despite the pitiful state of his uniform and dirty skin made him look quite charming. Then he flicked the lighter closed and as he placed it back in his pocket he swung his head around and looked at you. Lightening went through you as his blue eyes met yours – caught already staring. You thought you saw the hint of a smirk on his lips before you turned your eyes down. You could feel your cheeks flush from something other than the sun.
Though intently focusing on keeping your eyes on what your hands were doing, you eventually gave in to the temptation to steal another glance at Hoosier, but when you looked up, him and his companions had gone.
Introducing Black Harry Hoosier: The History Behind Indiana’s Namesake Indiana’s nickname is as distinctive as its source is mysterious. Early in the nineteenth century, Hoosier was a common synonym in the South for a yokel or bumpkin, but there is no record of how the term came to be used as slang or what it originally meant. The ear- liest Indiana settlers brought this word with them from the Appalachi- an region,but they left behind no trace of its etymology.By the middle of the nineteenth century, Indiana citizens had transformed this label of abuse and disparagement into a badge of pride and identi- ty. Indiana folk were proud to be Hoosiers, but what did that mean? Fortunately, it is unnecessary to invent a first Hoosier because one already exists, and he was a noted figure in his own right. Harry Hosier, better known during his life as "Black Harry", was an African American Methodist preacher during the Second Great Awakening in the early United States. Dr. Benjamin Rush said that, "making allowances for his illiteracy, he was the greatest orator in America". For the thousands who flocked to hear Harry Hosier preach, the name “Hoosier” was a memorial to both the man and his message-of freedom for human bondage and freedom from the bondage of sin. In his extensive travels, Bishop Francis Asbury often was accompanied by traveling companions who were preachers themselves. One of Asbury’s traveling companions was Harry Hosier. His last name being spelled in various ways, including Hoosier, Hosier, Hersure, Hoshure, and Hoshur. Harry Hosier’s listeners pushed out of the Appalachian Mountains into the Mid-West, many of whom settled in present-day Indiana. Methodist were influential in the settlement of Indiana and that fact that a Black Methodist Preacher gave Hoosier their nickname. “Welcome To Indiana Hoosier State.” CARTER™️ Magazine carter-mag.com #wherehistoryandhiphopmeet #historyandhiphop365 #cartermagazine #carter #harryhosier #hoosier #indiana #blackhistorymonth #blackhistory #history #staywoke https://www.instagram.com/p/CohczNyLUam/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
No wonder you guys don't talk about Guadalcanal. You didn't do anything. Apparently, John Basilone did everything. - Oh, fuck you. - We all did shit like that and without all the grimacing. No, he's back home selling bonds and dicking blondes while you're still here in paradise. I gotta drop the kids off at the pool. Anybody need anything from the bar? - Dry martini? - Well, it's not a real bar.
~~~~~~~
December 7th, 1941
Chicago, IL
“Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, I am speaking to you tonight at a very serious moment in our history. The Cabinet is convening and the leaders in Congress are meeting with the President-”
Kate listens intensely to the radio one evening with her family in the parlor.
“-In fact, the Japanese ambassador was talking to the president at the very time that Japan's airships were bombing our citizens in Hawaii and the Philippines and sinking one of our transports loaded with lumber on its way to Hawaii.”
Kate's mother obviously in shock sitting next to her father on the loveseat, reached for his hand as her other hand slowly rests over her mouth.
“In the meantime, we the people are already prepared for action....Preparation to meet an enemy no matter where he struck. That is all over now and there is no more uncertainty. We know what we have to face and we know that we are ready to face it.”
When the announcement ended and the regular scheduled program continued, her father walked over to the radio and turned the volume dial down. Kate, her two brothers and mother waited for him to speak.
“Well, all we can do is wait.” he said with finality.
The following day, newspapers all over the U.S. had “WAR DECLARED!!” across every headline.
So, this was it. World War II has begun.
~~~~~~~
Kate and her two older brothers, Peter and Tommy, walk through Sears, Roebuck & Co retail store trying to find Christmas gift ideas for their mother.
“I heard they’re sending guys all over! Britian, Australia, Philippine's, Italy, Germany-” Tommy said excitedly.
“Yeah, that’s what I heard, too.” Peter confirmed.
Her brothers walking ahead gossiped about war details between them, not bothering to even look around for a gift.
Kate huffed irritably, “Why did you guys even come with me if you’re not going to help me find something for mom?”
They looked back and chuckled, “Ah come on, Ace, ma will love anything we get her.” Pete dissolved with a wave of his hand.
Kate rolled her eyes then continued to search for something worthwhile.
As her eyes scan the decorated windows of each shop, two uniformed men were standing in a storefront entrance each next to a military recruiting poster. One bearing “I WANT YOU FOR THE US ARMY” and another “WANT ACTION? JOIN THE U.S. MARINE CORPS!”
Tumblr media
“Hey, get a load of this!” Pete nudged Tommy when he saw the two posters.
The uniformed men saw that your brothers’ interests were peaked.
“What do you think, gents, wanna do your part for your country?” The Marine asked.
Pete and Tommy shot eager glances at each other while walking closer to the two men.
“Your country needs you, boys, we’re always looking for good, strong men.” The soldier added.
“See the world and get paid for it!”
“-an extra $50 if you join the 101st Airborne!”
Kate's brothers’ eyes lit up, so she decided to intervene.
“Excuse me, gentlemen, I think these two-” she began.
Each recruiter redirected their attention to her as she approached.
“Ma’am, we’re looking for abled women as well.” the soldier interrupted.
All of Kate's thoughts dissipated at this statement, stopping her dead in her tracks.
“Ever thought about becoming a nurse?” the Marine asked.
Tumblr media
“That’s actually what she’s always wanted to do!” Tommy verified for you.
“Shut up, Tommy!” she snapped.
“Well then-” the soldier began, “-sounds to me we have three new U.S. Army recruits!”
“More like three Marine Corps recruits.” the Marine countered with a sly grin.
~~~~~~~
Kate convinced her brothers to revisit the idea later when more was known about where the war was heading. It’s only been a week since the start of the war was announced, and they were already jumping into the snake pit feet first without looking.
But she had internally thought about it herself. Was it really such a hasty idea? The military would pay for all her training to become a nurse. And it’s not like she’d be on the front lines, right? So, she’d be safe.
Kate wasn’t sure who she would be trying to sell the idea to more: herself or her parents. They’d be more against the idea of her joining than Pete and Tommy. The more she considered it, the more she was inclined to join. But which branch?
Tommy and Pete were already dead set on becoming paratroopers for the Army. The idea of $50 more per check was more than enough to motivate them.
Kate discussed your idea with her best friend, Blanche.
“I mean, financially it makes sense.” Blanche agreed.
“They’d pay for me to become a nurse AND pay me while I go. Other than being away from my family, I can’t see why I shouldn’t do it.” Kate reasoned.
“Well, you would be without your best friend.” Blanche eluded.
Kate laughed, “That’s right.” she agreed with a slight look of disappointment.
“You know what, I’ll do it with you!”
A look of surprise appeared across Kate's face.
“Do what?” she queried.
“I’ll join with you and we’ll both become nurses in the military.”
She studied her best friend, “Really? You'd join because I’m going to?”
“Of course! We made a pact, remember?” Blanche reminded.
They each had promised eachother as children they’d always stick together and be best friends forever.
Kate smiled, “Ok! But let’s wait til after the holidays to go see a recruiter. I don’t want to ruin my parents’ Christmas and New Years.”
“Good call.” Blanche concurred.
~~~~~~~
The holidays came and went, and before Kate knew it, her, her brothers, and Blanche had enlisted as service members of the U.S. military. Tommy and Pete signed up as paratroopers for the Army, while Kate and Blanche decided on the U.S. Marine Corps. Needless to say, this news didn’t go over well with any of the parents. Especially for Kate and Blanche being women.
Kate and her brothers sat at the kitchen table across from their mother, Elaine, who was weeping, while their father, Mortimer, paced behind her.
“So,” Mortimer began, “-all three of you signed your lives away.”
They all remained silent with only the muffled bawls of their mother filling the room.
“You see what you’re doing to your mother!?” their father scolded, gesturing towards his wife.
“Pops, we just-” Pete began.
“Do you understand what you just did? The government owns you now. You’re just a number to them. They don’t care if you live or die over there. Who know what will happen to you!” their dad continued as he ran his hand through his disheveled hair.
Tommy, Pete, and Kate looked towards the floor with the weight of guilt weighing upon their backs.
Their mother finally straightened up and composed herself.
“Mortimer, what’s done is done. Shaming the children won’t do any good. Only thing we can do is support them now.” she defended.
Their children exchanged confused glances. Their father turned to her with a look of shock painted across his face.
“Elaine?” he questioned.
“Mortimer, they’re grown enough to make their own decisions. The least we can do is be there for them every step of the way.” she responded.
Their mother looked each of them over with a weak yet genuine smile.
“You will all be outstanding. I am proud of you all.” she added.
~~~~~~~
August 7th, 1942
After Kate and Blanche completed basic training, they surprisingly found themselves aboard a battle cruiser heading for Guadalcanal with well over 1,000 some male Marines. The Corps decided to assign two medics to each platoon, regardless of gender. When they ran out of men to assign, they resorted to placing females.
Kate was just thankful to be paired with Blanche, so she wasn't alone with all these unfamiliar faces. She wasn't one to enjoy too much attention in big crowds. Blanche, however, relished the spotlight. Especially when most of the attention were from men.
“Just look at them! So many handsome ones.” Blanche whispered as she nudged Kate.
“Mmhm.” Kate hummed unamused, looking around the mess hall below the main deck of the ship.
The kitchen prepared a special meal for the Marines today, so the men were buzzing, quite eager to eat something tasty for once. Kate and Blanche (being the only women within hundreds of miles) were usually allowed to get their meals beforehand to avoid unnecessary interactions with the males. Usually, they were able to finish their meals and leave before the guys would get there, but today seats filled up rather quickly upon hearing about the exclusive meal that was prepared.
The only encounters they usually had with the men were when they visited the aid station in one's and two's within the ship to receive medical attention as needed. So, to see them all at once in the chow hall was very overwhelming...specifically for Kate since most of them watched her and Blanche’s every move.
They were pushing through the crowd, trying to get back to their sleeping quarters when a Marine accidentally bumped into Kate with his arms cradling a bunch of oranges, causing him to drop a few.
“Oh! I’m sorry ma’am!” the boyish blonde Marine offered.
Kate crouched down and picked up the two oranges that fell to the ground.
“It’s ok, Private, no harm done.” she assured trying to place the two oranges strategically back on the pile in his arms.
“Oh no, please take them. A gift for two pretty ladies.” he added winking at Blanche.
“Why thank you, Private..?” Blanche began waiting for him to introduce himself.
“-Phillips. But call me Sid.” he insisted.
Blanche and Sid shared a brief moment of staring until it became too painful for Kate.
“Thank you again, Private Phillips. Try not to drop anymore, it would be a shame to waste those.” Kate said as she pulled Blanche in the opposite direction.
“See you around, Sid!” Blanche called out as she waved at him.
Sid made it to his table with the rest of the fruit unscathed.
“Dessert!” he announced to the guys seated as he distributed the oranges onto the table in front of them, “Make sure you save one of those for me!” he added.
Tumblr media
“I just wanna get off this goddam rust bucket, I can’t hear myself think!” PFC Wilbur Runner complained.
“Yeah, at least they give you a good meal before your send-off" PFC Lew Chuckler justified.
“Yeah, like the electric chair.” PFC Bill ‘Hoosier’ Smith interjected sarcastically before continuing, “But you, Runner,” placing a hand on the seated man’s shoulder, “-you have won a trip to a tropical paradise called Guadal-Kenel...Guada...ken...I still can’t pronounce it.” He dismissed with a laugh.
The table laughed collectively.
“Hey Sid, who was that doll you were chattin’ up?” Chuckler asked.
“Her name is Blanche.” Sid replied.
“Weren’t there two of ‘em?” Runner questioned.
“Yeah, but I didn’t get the other one’s name. She was a looker, too. She didn’t seem interested, though.” Sid proclaimed.
“Maybe you ain’t her type, Phillips.” Hoosier teased.
“Oh yeah, and you think you are?” Sid shot back with a snicker.
“Guess we’ll see, won’t we?” Hoosier returned with a confident smile.
“Not if I get to her first!” Chuckler chimed in.
“Ok, you’re on.” Hoosier said shaking Chuckler’s hand officiating the bet.
~~~~~~~
You sit on your bunk trying to concentrate on reading your anatomy and physiology research journal while Blanche drummed on and on about Sid Phillips.
“Blanche, please. That was an hour ago.” Kate resounded.
Blanche rolled her eyes at her, “You’re such a book bug!”
“Excuse me?” Kate chuckled back at her.
“We’re surrounded by strapping handsome Marines and you got your nose stuck in that book.” Blanche teased as she snatched Kate's book from her hands.
“Blanche! Be careful with that! It’s old-”
“Please, quit being sucha crumb. You’re always reading or studying.”
“Well, my brothers don’t call me ‘Ace’ for nothin’.” Kate explained.
“Just live a little, ok!? Look beyond the hard covers and enjoy the boys.” Blanche insisted.
“I’d say you’re a little slack happy, Blanche. I’m here to make sure these boys make it through the war alive. Not to find a boyfriend.” Kate clarified.
Blanche laughed, “Well, some things are out of your control. Because let me tell you something, you may not have been noticing all the hot bodies on this ship, but they absolutely been noticing you.”
Kate flashed her a bored and surly glance then snapped the book back from Blanche's hands.
“I’m not the least bit interested.” Kate finalized, flipping back to the page she was previously on.
“Not yet,” Blanche purred, “but you will.”
Kate ignored her comment and continue reading.
~~~~~~~
“Wrap it up now! Get your gear! Everybody topside for the pre-landing briefing! Let’s move!”
Kate heard the officers calling out in the slim hallways of the ship.
Kate and Blanche began collecting their medical supplies and duffels.
“Don’t forget your brassard.” Kate reminded her best friend as she pinned her own white armband donning the red cross to her left arm of her own uniform.
Soon, they stood on the deck with the rest of the Marines as an officer projected his voice as far as he can to brief everyone.
“Forget all the horseshit you’ve heard about the Japs. They had their turn, now it’s our turn!”
Kate and Blanche side eye each other with wide eyes.
He proceeded, “They may have started this war, but I promise you, we will finish it!”
“YES SIR.” The men responded outloud in unison.
“Hit the beach. Keep moving to your rendevous and primary objectives. When you see the enemy, kill ‘em all!” he ended.
“YEAH!” the men collectively roared together.
“Go! Let’s go get ‘em!”
All the men started to stir, each either tightening their helmet straps or adjusting their web belts.
Kate looked to Blanche to ask her if she has everything but discovered she had wandered off somewhere leaving her alone. Kate tried to look over the swarm of Marines then saw her talking to Sid. Kate shook your head and started to push through the crowd to get to her.
It was like swimming against a current walking through the sea of men.
“Excuse me.” Kate called out to no avail.
She suddenly felt a shoulder deliberately check her, knocking the strap of her duffel off her own shoulder.
“Hey, asshole, watch it!” Kate snapped.
A rather tall and broad Marine turned around staring her down.
“What the fuck did you just say to me?” he dared.
“I said watch it.” She repeated emphasizing the last two words without flinching.
He started to approach her as a devilish grin started to stretch across his face.
“I like ‘em feisty.” he whispered inches from Kate's face.
She stood her ground, not giving him the satisfaction he can intimidate her.
“You’re not getting anyone with that breath.” she replied with a grimace.
The large man fisted the front of her uniform practically lifting her off the ground.
“Hey, Bennetti! That’s enough!” a voice barked out from the crowd.
He doesn’t let Kate go but does allow her feet to touch the ground again. She looked to the side and saw another Marine pushing past the others with a few members of his squad close behind him.
Tumblr media
“What’s it to you, Hoosier?” Bennetti retaliated.
“Well, that there is our medic, so get your meat hooks off her. Do you not know how to treat a lady?” Hoosier asked smoothly.
“I can think of a few ways to treat her.” Bennetti stated winking at Kate. She strained to get out of his grip as anger started to boil over from within her.
“Let her go. Now.” Hoosier warned as Chuckler, Runner, Sid, and Private Bob Leckie line up ready to square off in case Bennetti decided not to comply.
Bennetti sized up his competition, then let her blouse top go with a bit of a shove, slightly projecting her into opposite direction. With her chest heaving, Kate spat at Bennetti’s boots, then turned on her heel to walk away.
Hoosier and the rest of the boys “oooo-ed” then laughed impressed by her gumption.
“She is feisty, isn’t she?” Leckie acknowledged.
“Yeah, like a firecracker.” Chuckler added.
“More like a stick of dynamite...I think I’m in love.” Hoosier confessed while his eyes were glued on Kate disappearing into the mass of men.
~~~~~~~
Kate and Blanche boarded a Higgins boat with H Company. Almost forty people were packed like sardines in the floating metal box, not allowing for much personal space. Blanche conveniently sat herself next to Sid for the ride to the island, once again leaving you to fend for yourself. Fortunately, Kate found herself in better company next to the Marine that defended her earlier from the brute, Bennetti.
She side-eyed him awkwardly, knowing she hadn’t properly thanked him for helping her yet. Hoosier sensed her apprehension to speak first so he took initiative.
Tumblr media
“You alright?” Hoosier asked.
Kate's breath caught in her throat before she spoke, “Oh, uh, yes. I’m fine.”
He smiled, “That’s good.”
She looked down at her boots, swallowing hard before she spoke again, “Thank you. You know, from before.” she muttered.
Hoosier’s smile increased, “Don’t mention it.” he replied admiring her shyness.
Another moment of silence passed.
“I’m Bill Smith. But my friends call me Hoosier.” he said extending his right hand.
Kate coyly smiled at him then grab his hand to shake, “Mary Kate Danaher. Call me Kate.”
Hoosier raised his eyebrows, “Irish?”
“How did you know?” she asked mockingly.
He chuckled, “Just a hunch, I guess.”
They remained quiet for the rest of the journey to shore while explosions tore through the air, as hundreds of C47’s soared over them in flocks. The water was choppy and rough, causing a lot of the men seasickness and lose the meals they had just eaten. Kate wished she could help them, but they could only just push through until they all reached land.
She began to hear indistinct shouting.
“Standby!” The driver shouted.
“Hoof it up to the beach! Spread out! GO! GO! GO!”
The hatch of the boat drops and Marines hit the beach running forward each yelling profanities as they find themselves knee deep in water trudging to get through the sandbar. Many suddenly slow down to take in the scene before them.
“What took you so long?” a random Marine called from the beach, leaning against a palm tree relaxing in front of what can only be described as a campfire.
“Welcome to Guadalcanal.” another added sarcastically seeing the confused looks on the new arrival’s faces.
Leckie, Chuckler, Hoosier, Sid, and Runner collectively laugh, amused by the laid-back atmosphere that they weren’t expecting to experience.
~~~~~~~
Kate sat close to where H Company settled on the beach. Blanche checked in with her before rejoining Sid on a makeshift bench made from beached driftwood. Kate decided to make use of this time by reorganizing her medical supplies.
Kate was startled when she heard Chuckler repeatedly beating a coconut against a stone. She laughed to herself imagining him as a caveman. As he successfully breaks through the shell of the coconut, he becomes disgruntled to find there’s another solid layer.
Tumblr media
He shows Leckie, “Hey, now what do I do?” he asked.
Tumblr media
“I think the islanders us a machete or a rock.” Leckie responded with a smile.
“Try using your head, Chuckler, it’s big and rocklike.” Runner added.
Chuckler grabbed his machete.
“If you do get that open, you might not want to drink too much of the juice right away.” Kate advised Chuckler.
He looked over at her and smirked, “Oh yeah? Why's that?” he asked flirtatiously.
“Coconut water has mild laxative effects if you consume too much at once.” she clarified.
Chuckler tilted his head eyebrows drawn together confused.
“You’ll get the shits if you drink too much of the stuff inside.” Leckie simplified.
“Ah ok...” Chuckler comprehended while looking disappointedly at the fruit on his lap.
“But the coconut meat is very good for you, so you can eat that.” Kate expanded to cheer him up.
Chuckler smiled at her, “When I get in this son of a bitch, I’ll bring you some.” he offered with a wink.
She only smiled and return to packing her supplies.
Leckie walked over to Kate, “Yeah, you kinda have to dumb it down for him. He’s a great guy. Great Marine, just not that bright when it comes to big words.”
She looked at Leckie and snickered.
“Bob Leckie.” he offered his right hand.
“Kate Danaher.” she took his hand firmly.
“Strong Irish name! Good to meet you. So, your assigned to H Company?”
“I am. And I already have a good feeling about it.” she stated.
“Yeah? How’s that?”
“Well, you all came to my rescue when that bum had me dangling a foot from the ground. You guys didn’t even know me, and you stood up for me anyway. Speaks volumes about you guys.” she illustrated.
“Oh, we knew you long before that happened.” Leckie confessed.
Kate looked at him befuddled.
“Yeah! You and your friend, um, Blanche, is it? Yeah, you two have had these guys’ heads spinning since you boarded that carrier to get here. Of course, we all had to asked around about you.” he explained with a dismissive shrug.
Kate's eyes widened, “Weren’t there more important things to worry about?” she questioned.
“Uh, like?” Leckie returned.
“Oh, I don’t know. Battle plans perhaps? Maps of the beach and the rest of the areas we’re about to trek through?” she listed.
“I don’t know about the rest of these guys, but I write more than I read. Would’ve brought my typewriter if I could.”
“Leckie, you’re going to bore her to death.” Hoosier teased sitting on a fallen palm tree right next to Kate.
She beamed at Bill.
“Well, Bob Leckie, since I love to read, and you love to write, perhaps we can exchange some literature sometime. I’m always looking for new material to read.”
Leckie looked at Hoosier with a cocky, triumphant smile.
“Absolutely, Kate Danaher.” Leckie replied with a slight bow.
She nodded and occupied herself with the project at hand.
Leckie raised his eyebrows at Hoosier.
Bill presented Leckie his middle finger then waved him away mouthing, “Get lost.”
Leckie trotted off laughing to himself.
“So, what do you like to read?” Hoosier started.
“Mostly medical journals. Medicinal studies, anatomy and physiology, physician dissertations-” Kate glanced at Hoosier noticing his furrowed eyebrows, “-um, sorry, I’m what Blanche refers to as a ‘book bug.’”
She winced looking down at her medic satchel embarrassed.
Hoosier chuckled as he scooted closer to her, “No need to be sorry. Only thing I read is the newspaper or Dick Tracy comics. Not exactly a disser-uh-dissrat-”
“Dissertations.” Kate corrected him with a nervous giggle.
He laughed, “Yeah, that.” He started to rub the back of his neck.
Tumblr media
Chuckler abruptly walked over to Kate handing her a half-gutted coconut filled with sliced coconut meat.
“As promised, doll.”
“Oh my, thanks Chuckler.” she praised as she accepted the coconut.
“Anything for you. And call me Lew.” he implored with a proud grin.
Hoosier rolled his eyes at Chuckler’s intrusion and sickening attempt to seduce her. The moment was short lived as the meek voice of Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Lewis chimed in.
“Hey, for what it’s worth, Col Dobson said the Japs might’ve poisoned the coconuts.” he announced nervously.
The group looked at him perplexed.
“They poisoned…a billion coconuts?” Runner asked him.
Lewis shrugged his shoulders, taking a second to think about how silly that sounded until he heard a man cry out in pain behind him.
“Excuse me!” Lewis pardoned himself from the conversation to run towards the injured man.
The group exchanged amused glances, enjoying a good laugh together.

Lieutenant Corrigan appeared, stomping through the camp.
“Intelligence has it the Japs moved back into the jungle. Clean the sand out of your weapons. We move in three minutes. Let’s go find some Japs.” he bellowed.
Hoosier stood up and walked past Kate to where his gear was.
“See you around, Bill.” she called after him.
Hoosier met Kate's gaze with a gleam of excitement behind his own.
“You bet you will.” he called back.
She smiled then redirect her attention to packing up.
Blanche came skipping over.
“See?? I told you!”
“Ugh! Told me what, Blanche?”
“You got yourself a beau!” she tittered poking Kate's ribs.
“Unlikely. I was just gettin’ to know the guys we’ll be taking care of, that’s it.”
“I saw how you looked at him. You can’t fool me.”
“Can we focus on getting our gear and supplies together before the LT snaps his cap?” Kate warned.
“Sure thing, Ace.” Blanche squeaked as she walked off.
Kate shook her head, “She’s going to kill me.” she huffed to herself.

The weather was slowly beginning to be absolutely unbearable. There probably wasn’t an inch of your body that wasn’t covered in sweat. Your mind was clouded by the thought of the cooling ocean that could provide at least a temporary relief from the never-ending heat. You most probably would be in the water already if you were actually back home in the States but the heavy Thompson on your shoulder was constantly reminding you otherwise, that you were still very much in the middle of the Pacific killing for peace.
Well, that and the constantly annoyed voice of Chuckler who complained about the weather three times minimum every five minutes. At least you suffered in silence.
“No need to point out our miserable conditions anymore, Chuckler,” you finally snapped but your voice had a bit of a playful tone into it, so your friend knew it’s nothing personal. You all were in a crappy mood, feeling horrible.
“Hoosier looked way too comfortable over there,” Chucker grinned at you, “simply had to remind him what a wonderful situation we find ourselves in.”
Hoosier shot him a fake smile in response and then got back to his cigarette. Even he was too tired to actually think of some sarcastic remark to retort with.
You shook your head, laughing. “Maybe you need to remind him some more.”
Runner next to you leaned back in laughter, always enjoying when you teased the poor man from Indiana, Loogootee. Which you did quite often. You couldn’t lie to yourself, you enjoyed teasing Hoosier more than you probably should and from a whole lot different reason than Runner.
Chuckler nodded in anticipation. “Maybe we should take our shirts off, what do you say, Y/N?”
His words took you by surprise – you almost choked on your own cigarette – as he took it to a completely new level.
“God, Juergens,” Leckie joined, his typical smirk lightening up his tired face, “no one wants to see that. Unless Y/N really joins in so then I’ll have something to focus on.”
Your cheeks blushed at Bob’s comment as you just rolled your eyes to appear not so flattered by his words. You knew perfectly well why the boys were being so flirtatious all of a sudden. Leckie about a week ago pointed out to you so convincingly that Hoosier has this enormous crush on you. At first, you began to laugh hysterically, thinking it was one of Bob’s classic jokes but when his face remained serious, you gave him a funny look.
“Hoosier? The Hoosier? On me? Bob, the heat is making you imagine things.”
But he simply just shook his head, his voice perfectly calm and quite convincing. “Y/N, I might be a bit stupid sometimes but I’m not blind. And given the fact that we’re in the middle of this fucking war, I think it’d just be nice to have someone by your side.”
You never heard Robert Leckie sound so serious and sincere before.
“I have you guys,” you tried to discourage him once more from his theory, which was actually more of a fact, but you hadn’t known that yet. He patted your shoulder and with a quick ‘think about it’ he disappeared from your sight, his words still echoing in your head.
That was seven days ago.
Leckie must had made a pact with Runner, or so you thought, because he approached you three days ago at lunch and the conversation was pretty much the same one like you had with Bob. Apparently, there was even a bet in the company on what’s going to happen first: Hooser finally making a move or you actually realizing the real deal.
“The whole fucking company?” you exclaimed once Runner finished justifying his and Bob’s theory.
“Yep!” he grinned, “even the officers.”
“Oh God,” you groaned, your head falling into your hands.

Ever since those two encounters, there was almost nothing else on your mind than Hoosier. You were seeing his stupid face everywhere. What had happened to you? A week ago, you were okay, and Hoosier was just a fellow soldier. Now he was Hoosier.
Damn Bob and Runner, you were sure that this change in thinking was their intention all along.
This went on for a couple of days until you just couldn’t bare it anymore, so you decided to give the men what they wanted and finally test the ridiculous theory yourself. You tried to not make it a big deal, you really did, you were trying to convince yourself that it was a mere distraction from the war but none of it slowed down your racing heart or stopped your trembling hands.
***
When the company was finally granted some very much needed relax time and was taken back from the front lines for a couple of days, you decided to take action. It was a ridiculous plan, stupid really, but if there was something you learned from your friends’ relationships before the war, it was wearing the clothes of your other half. It usually worked in 9 cases out of 10.
You stole one of Hoosier’s army shirts that was for whatever reasons his favourite, so you knew he’d be able to recognize it. Sneaking your way around the camp, you reached the destination where the provisional showers were built.
William Hoosier Smith, the game is on.
The company was watching a movie outside that night – a perfect opportunity. You walked out of the showers, finally feeling fresh and clean in weeks. Plus, the comfort of new clothes on your skin, Hoosier’s clothes, was quite something you weren’t able to describe. It almost felt like being born again.
But only this time it was better, your body shook with anticipation, a grin on your face and a slight blush on your cheeks. This was it, no going back now. You thanked the God that your friends chose their seating place far right, so you didn’t have to make your way through the whole goddamn Company, grabbing everyone’s attention.
Sitting down next to Hoosier and casually lighting your cigarette proved like one of the hardest things to do when wearing this man’s clothes. You were both scared and excited at once, dreading the outcome of your little game as well as welcoming it with open arms.
At first, nothing happened, the boys seemed to be too pulled into the movie to pay attention to anything else, your cigarette for nervousness long gone.
Until Hoosier turned his head to you, you felt his eyes looking you up and down, sending you shivers down your spine.
You didn’t know where the sudden courage was coming from, but you leaned dangerously close to him, whispering, “Is there a problem?”
Hoosier swallowed, taking a drag from his cigarette. He didn’t answer right away, instead a smirk slowly appeared on his face.
“Is that my shirt?”
You knew the question was coming, hell you even prepared possible answers, but it was as if all of them vaporized in the air and your mind was left blank.
You turned your whole body to Hoosier, finally realizing the tense atmosphere between you two.
“Is it?” you tried your best to sound as innocent as possible, “sorry, my bad. Do you want it back?”
Hoosier seemed taken back by your words but only for a fraction of a second, his confident and a bit cocky self was back. “If it wouldn’t be too much trouble.”
Your cheeks heating up, you moved closer even more and reached for his cigarette that was hanging from his lips. You slowly took it into your fingers, taking a drag and blowing a puff of smoke into the air. Hoosier’s eyes were fixated on your every move, and you knew you succeeded.
“You might want to follow me, Private Smith.”
“Count on it, Ma’am.”
Maybe Leckie was right, maybe having someone by your side was all you needed to make it through the war. You hadn’t known it back then, when Hoosier was following you in the night, you hadn’t known it the day after, or in a week or a month, but ever since the shirt incident Hoosier had always been there, always by your side, and it was only after the war ended, on the ship home, when you finally realized that the someone Leckie was talking about two years ago was William Smith.
