#thank you! #softest beds is a whole new compliment that's so sweet #let me go off on a weird and personal tangent for a minute #I've always found the concept of sleeping very touching somehow #it's this mandatory resting period literally everyone has to plan their life around no one has the power to avoid sleeping #if you neglect it your mind and body start to break down very quickly #sleep is such a neutral state of being no one is particularly sad or happy or evil or good while they're asleep they're just logged off #sleeping feels nice it's rejuvenating it's one of the few universal pleasures every single person has an access to #and I find it terribly cute how people have different little bedtime rituals #socks on socks off various pillow and blanket arrangements certain sounds that make them sleepy etc #and sleeping next to someone is such an act of trust #it's extremely intimate as is sex doesn't necessarily have to factor into it #getting comfortable and going unconscious with someone at the same place at the same time that just touches my heart #especially if you're invited into their bed which is a very private space a person's own little nest where the world can't reach them #even if you fall asleep in public transport there's this vulnerability to it and for the most part people respect the sanctity of sleep #and tend to leave sleeping people alone at least in my limited experience #I like drawing my characters sleeping because it feels like I'm doing them a favor granting them a little respite #anonymous #answered

Thinking about how Astarion insisted on staying up to keep watch in the beginning of the game

Yeah, it could be because he needs to go hunt at night without anyone noticing, or because he's keeping an eye out for Cazador/his minions. But... It could also be because he's scared of sleeping/trancing in general?

He's got severe C-PTSD. I have that too. And one of the things I experience from it is a fear of falling asleep.

Sleeping is vulnerability. You're completely defenseless. It's terrifying to fall asleep when you're used to danger! And some abusers will purposefully do things to you when you sleep. I wouldn't put it past Cazador to have done something like that.

It's especially terrifying when you're sleeping somewhere unfamiliar, or as out and open as a forest. With strangers.

Add in the elvish reverie (if we assume Astarion still experiences it as he would if he were alive at his current age)... and he might even be reliving horrible memories every time he tries to rest.

(If you're unfamiliar with elvish trancing/dreaming, I made a post about it and some ways it might affect Astarion as a vampire spawn a while ago)

One of the reasons I think this could be the case is actually the other spawn, specifically what I noticed when we first meet Dalyria and Petras. At first I thought Astarion's eye bags were just a product of being undead. But... Petras, the very human looking spawn, doesn't have that. Dalyria is an elf as well, and like Astarion, she's got some of that tired sleep-deprived purple under and around her eyes.

So all this considered... I think it's very possible that Astarion has a fear of sleeping too. Or at the very least, trouble resting. Him and the other elvish spawn.

It also makes me wonder if he sleeps any better later on in the game. By Act 3 he probably feels more comfortable with you and the group. Sleeping near familiar people (especially people you're very comfortable with, but that's very dependant on your own choices in your game), and having established night time routines can make sleeping feel a little safer.

Plus by that point he's made many new memories he can visit in his reverie. Maybe instead of remembering the terrible things, sometimes he dreams of sun bathing, the first time he bit you or that bear, or any other happy memory he's created since being tadpoled.

Maybe for the first time in centuries, sleeping isn't such a terrible prospect.

I’m laying down to sleep and I can hear them upstairs still chatting in their bedroom and I’m just trying not to full on SOB with how happy and peaceful and blessed I feel at this moment. the highlight of my otherwise challenging 2024 has been having this sleepover with my favorite lesbian couple in their 80s. trying to actively cement all of this in my brain even more than usual because this is going to be pure serotonin to draw on. i wanted to compile a comprehensive list of every time the members of geralt's hansa hold each other, grasp hands, hug, kiss, cuddle, etc... so i could analyze dynamics and patterns (if there are any). note that this is from what i remember, but i also checked scenes i wasn't certain of, to make sure i wasn't missing anything.

list of touch as communication:

geralt holds dandelion by the shoulders (the last wish) and places a hand on his shoulder (toc ch 5)

to apologize to geralt for offending him about ciri, milva gives him a kiss on the cheek. geralt then asks dandelion and milva to cuddle (bof ch 2)

cahir offers to cuddle milva for warmth and reassurance when they're both afraid sitting by the river ina (bof ch 5)

when they meet zoltan’s company again, they and geralt go around shaking hands and hugging each other (bof ch 7)

dandelion tugs geralt’s sleeve to flee from the battle of the bridge on the jaruga (bof ch 7)

not touch persay, but when dandelion admonishes cahir for trying to read his writing over his shoulder during the night by the fire, cahir quickly moves his bedroll and belongings nearer to milva (ttos ch 3)

when milva is angered, geralt holds her arm (ttos ch 5)

when milva apologizes to angoulême, she does so through a wordless hug (ttos ch 5)

geralt asks dandelion for a kiss before the company leaves for castle stygga (lotl ch 4)

i'm not counting touch as a necessity — to save someone’s life or care for them in a medical sense — so this discounts geralt carrying dandelion to the saddle and giving him a makeshift dressing (bof ch 5), regis dressing dandelion's head wound properly (bof ch 5), regis caring for the girl from the camp’s burns and carrying and giving medical care to milva (bof ch 7), geralt supporting cahir on his back and dressing his head wound (ttos ch 6), and angoulême trying to lift geralt when he collapsed from pain in his knee (ttos ch 7). i'm also not counting touch as aggression — mainly, the fight which break out between geralt and cahir, and milva breaking it up with her belt (ttos ch 5).

analysis and conclusions:

geralt and dandelion are closer than the rest are to one another, which makes sense because they have known each other a much longer time and are best friends

milva apologizes through immediate, intentional touch (a kiss, a hug) which seems driven by impulsive reaction of what "needs to be done," opposed to a thoughtful consideration

cahir favors milva, associating safety with her, which makes sense due to milva's defense of him to geralt

regis doesn't hug anybody, does not enact touch unless it's for medical or life-saving purposes. regis and milva continue to be exact opposites of words vs action, philosophical vs physical

angoulême is hugged by milva, but also does not enact touch unless it's for life-saving purposes
