Moomin character names in Hungarian
I’ve been seeing @moomintrivia‘s posts about the character names in different languages and promised to make a post explaining the Hungarian names. Sorry, it was too long for an ask but you can reblog it from this post :)
Note: The magician's hat was translated earlier in the 90s so some characters have two versions of names. Another interesting(ish) thing is that the earlier translation is from Swedish, but the recent translation of all the books is from the Finnish version (because the publishing was supported by the Finnish Literature Exchange)
Here are some names I collected:
Moominpappa and Moominmamma are just called Muminpapa and Muminmama (sometimes just mom/dad in the new translation I think), and Moomin is either spelled "mumin" or "múmin".
Moomintroll: just Mumin or Muminbocs (Moomin-cub)
Snufkin: Vándor (Wanderer), in the earlier version his name is Kószlászbóklász (wordplay on two verbs, kószál/bóklászik which also have the meaning of wandering around that really fits his character)
Sniff: Motyó - motyó is a funny word for "stuff", mostly stuff you own. In the earlier version he was called Mafli ("mafla" means sheepish, it's like a nickname version of this adjective)
Snorkmaiden is called Cókmók (another word meaning "stuff"), and Snork is Mók (doesn't really mean anything in itself, but also their species - Snork is translated as Mók). In the earlier version Snorkmaiden is called Bájocska (another nickname sounding name, bájos = cute, pretty) and Snork is called Fürkész (fürkészik - to examine sth which is probably also a fitting name for his character)
Little My: Varkocs (a type of hairdo, probably referencing her hair), Pöttöm (tiny) in the early version
Mymble: Lencsilány - this has an interesting/longish story. Reference to "lencsi" dolls (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lenci_doll) and "lencsilány" - lencsi girl also appears in a popular kid's song from the 60s. Maybe because the Mymble kinda looks like this doll?
Groke: Jégrém (ice-monster, also kinda sounds like "jégkrém" - ice cream), Hork in the earlier which is just probably a reference to the sound she makes.
Hemulen: Böngész ("browser")
Too-Ticky: Antan-ténusz (this is a gibberish word from a nursery rhyme, I found it has debatable origins, but it probably fits a funny named character)

you know how ppl are getting hogwild all over again abt the influential characters of our gay childhoods like moomin or bert and ernie. can we go hogwild abt pöttyös panni and tamara for a second. like remember when panni and tamara first met & they didn’t have a common language so they started drawing pictures to talk and ask each other abt their lives…. and they immediately started learning each other’s language by pointing at stuff and saying what it’s called in hungarian/russian…… and panni still ended up with that fuckboy kockás peti. jézi

Sooo
Today I watched the Hungarian version of the Comet in Moominvalley and I can tell hearing those voices after the English version was hilarious. And the best thing is how they translated the names😅
Here's some of them:
Snorkmaiden--> Horkica
Snork-> Hork
Hemulen-> Filatér
Sniff-> Szimat
And at last but not least:
Snufkin->Szuszek
Edit: I forgot to add that in that version Moomin has a female voice

hi! i'm back with another request because i loved your hungarian one so very much! i was thinking- could you do any lookbooks based of off tove jannson's the moomins? preferably snufkin-esque and mymble's daughter-esque styles? i know it's something completely different than what's usually on the blog, but i think it'd be very cool!! thank you, and i'm sorry if this is so complicated! have a great day!
Hello hello! I am not familiar with these cute little characters but I will give it a go! And hit you up for inspo photos 😊 I may do some more cultural looks first since I’m on a roll but I will definitely give it a whirl! Thank you for the request!
