Working at the film store was the worst.

The pay was shitty, the customers were rude- especially if you end up not having the movie, the boss is a douche and is never there, and the hours were just stupid, no one is renting a film at 10pm on a weekday.

The only thing keeping you from quitting is the friendship you’ve formed with your two co-workers.

When the two of them started, you were certain they were a couple, but during training you were immediately corrected. They couldn’t be further from romantic, it was kind of adorable.

It took almost a year for Robin to come out to you, she was batshit terrified. You had to reassure her that you didn’t care and that you were proud of her for feeling comfortable to tell you.

But, that led you to having no real reason to ignore how attractive you find Steve. Not that you were the only person who thought so, most of your “regulars” were only there to gawk at Steve- not that you could blame them.

He seemed to like you too- not in that way, at least you don’t think so. But he’s always trying to make you laugh, especially when customers weren’t around. He’d tell you all the drama his ‘boy’ dustin would tell him about school, which you loved. And he’d always try to get you on his side whenever him and Robin fought- even if it was stupid.

“And so I told her- everyone likes boobies! She likes boobies, I like boobies, I know you’re not gay but I’m sure you like boobies.” He rambled, recounting the argument he and Robin had “She paused it at 53 minutes and 55 seconds, she likes boobies.”

“Im sure she does Steve,” You say. You learnt that Steve’s rants are even more entertaining when you agree, so it’s be socially became a reflex.

The two of you spent the next hour waiting for customers. There hadn’t been a single one since 6:30, it was 9pm.

“This is so stupid,” You mutter, you were tired and just wanted to go home.

Steve chuckles, “Are you sick of me already? We’ve got two hours left.” He says.

Although Steve couldn’t lie, he’d grown bored too. He’d run out of stories to entertain you with, and your brain was so broken from working so long to come up with one yourself.

While you were sitting on the counter, waiting for new customers, Steve was sitting on the floor, just to the right of your legs, back against the counter.

He started casually playing with the cuffs of your jeans, before throwing all caution to the wind and grabbing a pen to draw stars on them.

You watch Steve start to get more creative with his doodles, before finally getting so concentrated he’s gripping on your ankle, digging his skin into your flesh.

It tickles, so you try and kick him away. He actually lets out a whine, “Stop it, you’re ruining my design.” He says, using his strength to still your movements, holding you in place to finish his doodle.

“Good girl, that wasn’t so hard was it?” He says, smirking as he tries to find an empty part to keep on drawing.

Your heart must have moved to your throat, because you can feel the harsh beats as your body fights itself on running far away or staying in this moment.

You decide to stay.

Steve eventually gives up, having covered every inch of your cuffs with his art. He moves to sit on the counter, stretching his hand out. “Gimme your hand.” He says. You oblige, and he’s immediately drawing his random doodles on your hand.

You look to see what he’s drawing, it’s mostly stars, random little monsters, a dog, “steve was here”, but you can also see a little one. You remove your hand from Steve’s grip to inspect it.

He tugs your hand back, pulling a little too harsh and nearly dragging you off of the stool. He moves to catch you, hand on your waist as your faces nearly bump into each other.

Steve’s eyes dart from your eyes to your lips, and he moves forward, hesitating to give you a chance to push him away, before breaking the space between you. You immediately reciprocate the kiss.

His lips are soft against yours, slotting like the last piece of a puzzle. You moan against his mouth, carding your hands in his hair.

Before things can get too far, he looks behind you, quickly breaking the kiss and spinning you in your chair just in time to greet a new customer. You have to tell your body to breathe, the ability to do so subconsciously stolen by the kiss.

Your mind hazes as the customer wanders around the store aimlessly, then promising he didn’t need any help, that he was just looking for a movie. No shit, what else would you be here for?

Steve keeps insisting on helping the guy, hoping to get him out of there as soon as possible. When he finally gets the man to pick a damn movie, he’s pretty much tossing the money in the register.

Once he leaves, Steve locks the door and turns the closed sign on, walking behind the counter, gripping your waist and cheek and pulling you into his lips. This one is different from the first one, it’s harsh, desperate.

He takes your bottom lip between his teeth and you moan, your mind completely gone already.

You look at the glass windows and feel weary, you break the kiss, “Steve, windows.”

He gives you a shit eating grin, gripping your hand with his and dragging you into the bathroom, he immediately presses your back against the wall, pushing for a kiss.

You hum into his mouth, wrapping your arms around his neck to pull him closer. You use this angle to tug at the neckline of his shirt, he helps you pull it off, revealing his toned stomach.

He grips at your top, lifting it slightly before his hands still, “This okay?”

You whine, nodding, your mouth bumping against his from the movement. He shakes his head, “Words, baby, words.”

Your mind is so far gone, you can barely stutter out the “yes” he needs to smash his lips back on yours, hungrily shoving his tongue in your mouth.

He pulls your shirt of of you, thankful for your decision to not wear a bra. He lets out a shuddered breath at the sight of your breasts, “You’re perfect,” He says, moving to kiss down your neck.

You moan as he sucks on a sweet spot, he slides a hand between your bodies and unzipping your pants and shimmying them down your body. He cups your clothes cunt, slowly rubbing your clit through the sheer fabric.

You moan, rolling your hips into his hand. “Stop being a fucking tease” You murmur, resting your head back on the tiled wall.

I've been curious for a while now how you draw poses. How do you use references? Everything you make looks so natural but still lively it's so gorgeous

ghghfghn thankyou! i definitely feel like the worst person to ask for advice on this from, but i'll try and explain some of my thought process when working with character-focused art (and posing them!)

(rambling below the cut)

i think that understanding human form in general is probably the best way to feel confident in posing even if that sounds like what everyone says. when you feel familiar with the shapes of a body it's far easier to understand the rules in which they will move/interact with, and then composition in general tends to come a little easier.

When i start a pose (or just. character art in general) i like to try and work with the most bare-bones type sketch possible. I dont visualize things in my head very clearly, so when i do try and copy a reference or detailed sketch 1 to 1, it usually ends up incredibly stiff and boring because i get stuck following all the details. the way i break down shapes is a little off as well, i think in very angular and long lines, so i like to use the chest, knees, and shoulders as my "anchor points" for my figures - they're what i personally consider the most prominent points to focus on visually and i usually will build my pose around their placements. i think it’s good to come up with something like this to help ground your pose early on.

when i draw multiple characters interacting or in the same scene, i like to try and think of poses that feel in-character or natural to them. these two in my recent piece started out kinda cutesy but they argue a lot, so you can see the change as i readjusted the posing to make it feel more aggressive as i went along.

redoing a portion of a character midway through for whatever reason is pretty standard in my process, so i dont stress if i cant quite figure out a limb or perspective at first (this is when i will look for reference if i dont have one or take my own photos).

I dont really enjoy drawing characters just standing around, so doing something that feels more like a "scene" or moment of interaction like this (being scolded at for an injury, chatting, reading a book, catching a falling object, etc etc) is a nice way to try and come up with something at least a little more compelling to draw, and a way to work some body language into the poses too. legs and arms can make great space-fillers while still adding to the mood!

i dont really know how to wrap this up but as a general rule of thumb i try to think of poses that will fill the space of the canvas/image im drawing on, just like any other composition, while still considering the feeling or moment i want to convey. if i’m unhappy with the final full piece, i usually will just crop for a closer image (posting on other platforms usually makes me do this anyways, so i consider it part of the process at this point ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )

Okay I cant -- I need to say it out loud.

I am 100% sure, at this point, you are my favourite artist so far. And I have to honestly thank you for a lot of stuff so let me get to the point before my anxiety takes me back --

I came across you less than a month ago. I don't remember if I saw your art before reading your fictions (Mon Horrible Cherì was my first) or the other way around, but both inspired me so much I can't describe it properly. Art itself is my absolute weak spot. In my past years I always struggled working on that, I was never happy with my results, and mostly had drawn to pay bills than for my own happyness. In the end I hated it at the point that every line I drew was a cut on my hand instead of a moment of joy. And that was horrendous.

But then I came across your art, at some point - and I was amazed. Your style is something I wished to achieve years ago, or very similar to that at least, so I was totally into looking for more, and more, and more. I can't produce art of that quality, but for the first time I wasn't envious of another artist's ability and talent, I was just... Amazed. I felt very happy, can't say why, but your style totally fascinated me. It still do. Anytime you post something new it gives me a shot of serotonine, it makes me feel happy and inspires me to get back on my Huion and draw something too. I started to push it through everyday, and in less than a month I grew a lot. You don't know that, but you pushed me into art with a passion I didn't had since I was 16, and I turned 30 couple months ago. Now it gives me joy everytime I draw. It doesn't matter if the art I produce is no good, or if I change my style everytime (I'm trying a lot of styles right now), the only thing that matter is the way I feel when I sit here and just let my inspiration go. And I feel happy. Happy to draw. Happy to experiment. Happy to share. Somehow I don't feel ashamed of my art anymore, and I was for a long time. I improved so much in these weeks. I watched carefully almost all of your timelapses (I am in love with all of them btw) and followed your tutorials more than once. Your examples, the way you work, is just inspirational for me. I've seen someone was thankful to you for the way you use references and says people out there to do it too: I want to thank you for that too. References was a taboo until last month for me, and I was SO wrong! Those helps so much!

So, well. I am not sure I wrote this all correctly, english is not my native language (I'm italian) and I may have done some mistakes, well, I do not care. I just hope I was able to express you my gratitude for all you did for me - I had to let you know how much this means to me everyday.

Oh also: I love every part of your art, but I could stare at your linearts for days and never get bored by that. And the way you color! Don't make me start on that. I could speak for hours. Not sure you'll want that, believe me.

So, thank you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you for making me believe in myself again. Thank you for giving me back my passion. Thank you for reminding me everyday I can draw for myself, for my own happyness. And thank you for making me happy.

falling into sonic again..

no i grew up watching those epic sprite animations and sonic final fantasies, sonic paradox even. The games I played were heroes and a few more like unleashed and mega collection and i adored black knights transformation sequence i would play it in the car repeatedly ( i never owned a wii). I watched all the sonic gameplay I could. My favourite characters being sonic and shadow. I, however grew up and believed sonic was not "famous" and was niche, jealous of the only sonic merch being the boys underwear in the superstore :(,

i didnt like boom or even lost world. it wasn't "sonic" to me, so i fell out, come forces and im burned, never touching this franchise again in my mid teens. I looked at how it was doing, would watch dubs and enjoy animations but eh that was it for me.

then.. comes 2023 and the thing that drags me back into this franchise, the thing that fucking pulls me in and keeps me buried... is those same two fucking hedgehogs but this time... their fucking ship. I suppose i can blame the art that took me here in the first place but holy shit. if you told me when i was 5 years old that i would come to adore sonadow and that would be the sole reason for my staying to the sonic franchise and all i would draw would be fucking sonadow, i would think you were fucking stupid and then go on word and make sonic comics of him running and pissing on eggman. no its the fucking fact, that now its come to a point where the dynamic of sonic and shadow genuinely have shifted my entire brain chemistry, they are everything, romantic subtext or not, they have literally shaped my interest for the past half year.

the fucking SYMBOLISM sega hints around them??!! them being stars, fated, destined to meet, mirror images, understanding eachother the most yet causing the most frustration. Sonic, is the one character that can get so, so personal to shadow, challenge him in a way and intrigue him in the most bizzarest of ways he never understands yet finds equal annoyance as much as admiration, sonic is a shift to his core. Shadow also does care quite a bit, just as much as he gets irritated at his presence, i find it funny how in sonic 06, the two characters saving sonic are amy and Fucking SHADOW the hedgehog. (albeit you dont see this alot erm due to segas insistence of making characters.. boring? but anyways)

their TRUST.. in eachother, the sonic x shadow generations descriptions do it so well (esp in jp).

in sa2 when they.. worked together for the first time in space and.. he called him the ultimate life form.. and sonic and shadow.. just in that moment.. were together as one. and oh man..

I could talk about prime but uh my favourite interactions in there are mostly when one of the other was uncouncious or in a state of unawareness (youd be suprised how much this happened). like sonic holding shadow and saving him, he seems to get really, REALLY emotional when it comes to shadow than anybody else.. for some reason... and shadow' reaction when sonic almost died. OWee that was done so well. the way.. he held him.. tight.. when sonic was dying.. oh my gosh. bride style. oahy.. im not too fond on talking about prime since in terms of the "sonic and shadow" dynamic it sort of slaps you in the face but hey I appreciate some sonadow anytime, if that was their actual only canon dyamic i dont think I'd care for it as much but its more of an add on to one of the most insane PASSIONATE.. crazy mutually charged dynamics ive seen in my life... like why are they like that.. can they STOP.. those two.. my brain will explode if we actually like actually like ACTUALLY see them togteher and if its anything like "them" with their subtetly and bizzare unique tensions, i think i will lose my sanity and just not function anymore. good fucking bye if i see a mention towards emerl or the ending of sa2 i will lose my absolute shit and you random person seeing this will see me go through it. my sketchbook would probably be overwhelmed by the amount of incoherent sonadow mess dear lord why..

ignore this i have an exam tomorrow and ended up going on a crazy rant about tbese two hedgehogs that have carried me through senior year, shout out to sonadow.. gotta be the only thing dragging me towards a degree.

Every single Rainworld artist, new or old, please read!

So while this is on my mind, I just thought I would say something at the moment. I have seen so many, so many, artists copy or very closely copy a design from another persons since they really like their style and hope that if their style looks like this famous artists then they will get the same attention. This is slightly annoying to me, now drawing other peoples art or practicing design by using someone else's design then somehow in anyway making it super original is perfectly fine by me, it's really good to do that! But when you copy someone's design so closely that is looks like your trying to rip off their designs, that's not ok. another problem i see is people hating their designs cause they are not "detailed" or "pretty" or "different" enough from others. Now this post is gonna be about how you can make your own character with existing characters WITHOUT using someone else's design and not making the character "look boring" to you and others. Now no character is boring, everyone's different styles are amazing, this is not suppose to be a bad thing, this is just suppose to help other artists think better with making canon characters look original. Im gonna use Hunter as an example since I was drawing him when i thought of this. So hunter, let's take this step by step: Step 1: Do NOT look at a canon photo unless it's necessary for like a certain iconic scar or eye color or color or anything else like that, but completely IGNORE that canon design. Step 2: Break up what the canon character looks like into words. EX: Hunter is a slugcat with his color being on the red scale. He is being infected with the rot and is NSH's messenger. Now with this description a thousand different ideas can be made, I mean on the red scale could be red, pink, or all the way to a brown even! Then infected by rot? He could be fully infected by rot or he could be partly or be halfway, maybe he was cured from rot. And NSG's messenger? He could have a weird marking resembling that, or always have a green neuron with him, or have green eyes or green clothing or green markings, really anything! Now wasn't that easy ^w^ Step 3: Sketch/Doodle Do NOT instantly make a design choice unless you have one in mind right away, start doodling first, either digital or on paper and see how you like the design first, and if you like it then there you go! Now you ofc can change your design later on but it's better to have a main idea instead of posting something right away then regretting it since you don't like it. EX: For my Rivulet I first had him being a little more like the true rivulet design since the lore for my AU was different then, but when I was finally drawing him I didn't like his design and so I started messing around with it and finally I came up with my water bat design for him. Step 4: Finally, you have made it this far into the steps, you may now draw it completely, make a ref sheet or don't, join in on character group drawings and yada yada, you have your own design and you like it and that's all that matters! Step 5: Have fun, you are not limited by the canon design. Design however you like, give them any lore that probably isn't canon if you want to, make them aroace or gay or lesbian, change their gender, mess around, make them siblings with random people that shouldn't be their siblings, mess around with families and personalities, do what YOU want, no what others want or like ^w^ Hope this helped anyone who needed it!

random little things you’ve given them that make them a little too happy.

i, once again, im guilty of writing at unholy hours,,,,

It was random as fuck, still, he cherished the cute little rock you had painted and left on his desk as a ‘lucky charm’ and a paperweight. He dared not to move it since you plopped it there, even pushing stuff away for the comfort of the rock. He also likes staring at it, the art in it is wobbly and, if he’s honest with himself, a little ugly. Yet he still adores it to pieces. It reminded him of you, and he would sometimes rub the rock like a pet when he was thinking or cooling down after getting mad and, surprisingly, it did clear his mind and gave him a little luck. Great job, MC, you’ve made Lucifer as weird as you!

The corpse of an already eaten candy ring. The Mammon, the Avatar of Greed himself kept it in his desk and would fidget with it randomly through the day. He had walked on you eating it and you offered it to him, he called you disgusting and you shrugged. However, his eyes never left the candy in your hands so you stopped licking it, grabbed his hand into yours and asked him to marry you. He may or may not have combust then and there. Was it still gross? Yeah. Did he refuse to give the ring back? Also yeah. So you bit the candy and left him with the corpse, he whined but went to wash the leftover stickiness out of the ring and now feels all giddy when he looks at it.

Stickers on his bedroom door. You spend a good chunk of your time with him in his room, so it wasn’t weird that, eventually, you left signs of you being there often. Some clothes, random sketchbooks, cds and dvds among other stuff that Levi deems is owned between you both. Yet out of all of those things, he must admit the stickers are his favorite, they were of a couple of cute animals (sanrio style) holding hands and when you planted them there you had giggled as you said “it’s us.” When he is in low spirits he just looks at the stickers for strength and it works like charm.

A ridiculously cute notebook. It has a cute kitten with a pink bow and glitter as the cover and it even has a page full of stickers. It was rather hilarious to see the Wrath incarnate walking around RAD with such a cute notebook in hand. Not even an ounce of shame in his demeanor. You had heard he needed a new notebook and you couldn’t help yourself, it was half sincere and half as a joke but seeing him actually using it made you beam. Satan cherishes said notebook dearly, being aware that it was a joke he still went on to use it as, you know, a way to assert dominance but he became quite fond of the kitten in the cover. Whenever there is a dull moment in class he’d just stare at it and smile. Thank you, MC.

A cute plastic hairpin. Asmo was on cooking duty and you walked in the kitchen that day, like a fool, and he refused to let you go and whined for company. You, being an enabler to his baby behavior, agreed. He was gushing on a new bunch of cosmetics he was going to receive soon to review as he moved the food around in the pan to prevent burning, but his hair decided to be annoying that day and as he kept blowing it out of his face you took pity on him and used your pin to keep his bangs away of his eye. He did complain that you were ruining his hair but almost cried when you tried to take the pin again. Needless to say you never got your pin back.

A wrinkly sheet with a doodle on it. During a boring study session you began doodling random stuff on your notebook but you erased a little too hard and wrinkled the paper. You almost cried. It took you a lot of time to draw that circle, too, and you wanted to give it to Beel but it was ruined now. He patted your back and as you confessed your plans he smiled and took the draw. MC, he would gladly drink poison if it was from your hands. He adores and keeps every little thing you give him. Notes in class, sticky notes with doodles, pens, you name it.

As always, you never learn your lesson and you let Belphie borrow some of your erasers. They were the cute type, too! Shaped as tiny hearts and flowers. He chuckled and teased you when he saw them and you threatened to take them so he snatched it right out of your hand. Ok, rude. And that was the last time you saw them. If you ask for them back he’d say he lost them but they’re on his nightstand. He messes with them sometimes, rolling them around and poking them. I'm a big nerd. Like, a very big nerd. I do math for fun and I am not ashamed at all when I interrupt someone to correct them (I have autism and ADHD, how could you tell?)

I'm relatively closed off, and most of the time, insecure. I'm shy and I barely ever make the first move (unless I've had a couple of drinks or a lot of eyeliner). I think what people most define me as is the "old soul, young body). I'm like the mom of the group, though I am absolutely reckless when there's another mom in the group, since it takes the responsibility away from me.

I hate going out, and it's really hard to get me to go to the beach, for example. I think my best quality personality-wise is that I'm down to earth and realistic about my goals. A problem is probably how much self-doubt I have, since people constantly tell me I am capable of achieving more than I think I can. I don't settle for seconds, but I'm not too excited when I rech first, because there's always a new competition.

Oh yeah, I'm competitive. Very.

I'm a pessimist, though I like to say it's realism, because why be positive, hype myself up, only for it to go wrong and the disappointment hurt me? As I said, emotionally closed off.

My personality is the infamous black cat, and I think (though I'm not sure), that a golden retriever boy is what would fit me best. (even though I simp for other black cat guys)

For hobbies, I'm boring, though I do have many. I play the guitar, do martial arts (krav maga), draw, sing, write absolutely filthy smut, and, most important of all: do math and study. Yeah, my main hobby is studying.

I'm not sure how I show my love? I don't, usually. I can love someone unconditionally and be absolutely lovesick, but only after a very heavy emotional session, may it be a fight or drinks, will I tell soemone how much they mean to me. I spent the last four years with my best friend, and only after a day's worth of drinking and crying did I tell her how much she meant to me.

I'm a bit icky with physical touch, but if I trust them, I'll let them cling to me. Initially push people away and only after knowing them do I let them hug me, kiss me, cuddle me. I am awful when dealing with compliments, and I cannot take a gift. So probably quality time is my love-receiving language when generally speaking. A boyfriend/husband would probably work with physical touch and words of affirmation, though.

I dont think there's any big turn-off or turn-on in relationships? Maybe not giving me enough attention and helping me emotionally, because I'm easily falling into insecurity, feeling like I'm not enough.

I have like medium curly dark hair and dark eyes. Eyebags, and a lot of moles all over my face. My body is relatively fit? I have a bit of fat ngl but I also have muscles. A bit of a tummy and thicc thighs (they do, in fact, save lives) that double the size when I sit (insecurity alert!) I'm pale, though I am a mixed baby. I like. dont know how i feel about my art at the moment, ive gone years learning art effectively by just drawing what i think looks good without learning how to properly sketch or how to do proper anatomy and i think its finally caught up. im so hyper aware of it now and how it makes my art look stiff and boring and awful and it feels so overwhelming to try and learn how to do it "properly" now. and it makes me feel too overwhelmed to sit down and draw so now i just sit and do fucking nothing all day cause drawing is like the only hobby i have so what the hell am i doing now lmao

thanks for asking! sometimes i forget i exist here as a person cuz i just log on to queue random stuff without making posts 💀

it's pretty rare for me to watch an anime without ever reading the manga, and there've been stellar adaptations recently. ONK, kisekoi, BTR, frieren, CSM just to name a few. in a landscape where we're used to being disappointed as readers who have a frame of reference before watching a show, i had very, very high hopes for the dunmeshi adaptations that weren't quite fulfilled.

i'll dump everything under a cut since i actually have a lot to say, sorry if you were expecting it to be brief 😎

the lines in the artistic style are good, nicely translating the characters into animated format. really no notes there. definitely a nicer comparison for char designs between manga and anime vs. tonsuki and tensura who both have incredible manga styles that the anime stumble over (though in the latter's case, i don't think they were aiming for it sadly)

the shading has been fine, but weakened by the colour choices. some of the dungeon scenes (e.g., living armour stuff) are lit with a medium blue which helps to sell the idea of the scene being in a place not lit by fire (and contrasts it with the making camp & cooking scenes), but the lack of dark shading flattens some of these very well-drawn images.

the earlier chapters don't have the same level of detail as newer ones, but the art style is still fantastic - it's expressive with high contrast and shows action and impact perfectly well. manga will often times have a naturally easier way with contrast due to it being in black & white, but i don't think that means anime should just give up on contrast in favour of playing ineffectively with colour.

here's a night shot of fern from frieren. the choices made here allow for the shading to stand out from the flats and give her more definition overall while still being relatively simple (just flats + shading)

when dunmeshi has more "normal" lighting conditions, it does a lot better. similar to fern up there, there's about the same amount of difference between the flats and shadows, so i really wish they did a better job on the dungeon scenes since they're going to have to deal with non-torchlit scenes plenty. i won't argue that the living armor scene certainly has some kind of a sickly, alien mood to it, but tl;dr i think it should've had darker shading if not also being less green. this largely applies to every other blue-green lit scene they've done.

looking at kui's coloured drawings in the ed gives me an idea of what could've been and it makes me sad to lose out on colour choices more similar to that (even if they obviously can't have her level of detail on top of it)

some of the backgrounds haven't been too interesting but some have been good, overall it's probably fine. plus you can only draw and detail repeating bricks so many times before the viewer gets bored of looking at them anyway, i guess.

the animation is really fun and expressive. it's trigger, so they don't keep scenes stiffly on-model when they want characters moving around. this is good because it helps to sell both action and comedy moments!

the music overall i haven't really cared for? the BGM has not been particularly moving, interesting, or memorable - mostly generic. and i've seen too many fantasy shows for my own good, so i might be harder to impress (but i even remember tenken had a good BGM song or two to make a fight dramatic and that show was barely above average at best)

i'm biased not being particularly into bump, so i would've selected a different artist for the OP (i actually did like the bump OP from SxF though, come to think of it). before anyone makes a wisecrack based on what i've watched lately, no it doesn't have to be yoasobi.

i maybe feel the ED song would've been better for the OP, i don't like the largely peaceful bit of the OP with very still visuals. the OP is where you reel people in! it should be an eye-catching hook, representative of what to expect with some extra sauce on top.

the ED is great, total bop. it's a fine time for slower visuals as an enjoyable wind-down from the episode, so less or no animation is no big deal. plus kui's art is absolutely gorgeous! it all perfectly fits that "end of work" fun and lighthearted mood they were going for.

i largely enjoy the voice acting. i would've personally gone for a less "old man" voice on senshi because he's really not that old for a dwarf, but they obviously wanted to make it clear he was the older, wiser, knowledgeable character.

this might be my own personally most blasphemous opinion, but i would've picked a different VA for falin. i want to make it clear i absolutely adore saori hayami - she's incredible and one of my faves. with that said, her voice fits the character, so maybe it's just because i've heard her too often which is not her fault by any means! i love the voices for laios, marcille, and chil.

it seems netflix's subs go off of the official EN TL of the manga, which makes sense, but i've talked about how i don't like it more than ehscans' TL (which is one of the single best TLs i've read for a series, official or otherwise) and that holds true for the anime ("mad sorcerer" is cooler AND less clunky than "lunatic magician"). i prefer less localisation stuff and/or quirkiness in my subs and more direct translation for both manga and anime.

as for the changes/additions they've made to the show, some of them have been alright and some i didn't care for. they really want to sell marcille as the funny joke character which is why they had her being chased by the basilisk instead of having doni & fionil like it was in the manga which was better for the pacing and had good impact vs a funny clip of marcille running back and forth.

i don't dislike when adaptations add or change stuff, but placing them cleanly is important. dunmeshi is already really funny! i don't think it needs help being funnier by reaching for the cheap laugh. when laios sees two people running for their lives from a basilisk and he just goes "wow that's a bad way to run from that monster", it's already lowkey hilarious - all the more so followed by marcille telling mr. monster-know-it-all to go rescue them if he knows what's up and him rescuing them by making himself big and chicken squawking real loud (which embarrasses marcille and chil, but c'mon guys, at least his idea worked!). i feel like the comedy in laios' funny hero moment is undercut by forcing the marcille butt of the joke moment in the anime.

dunmeshi is already incredibly good at just about everything it does. i feel if an adaptation wants to add or change something, it's often better amplifying a strength or shoring up a weakness in the source material. BTR adds a lot to the source (not hard considering the source is a 4koma) and makes already funny things even funnier. the "we should all get social media" scene is elevated to iconic status with the visual of bocchi glitching out + the VA's inhuman screech. i can't say where i'd really want to change or add stuff to dunmeshi, since it really feels so good and whole, but i'm sure there's room in the process of translating manga panels to animated scenes, and i think the direction overall could've been better (comparing most shows to BTR isn't fair i know because BTR is directed & adapted so well it's hydrogen bomb vs. coughing baby territory)

i've mostly said negative stuff, but i don't want it to sound like i hate or even really dislike the adaptation. i think when it comes to a series you really love, you want to see the best adaptation possible within reason, and the disappointment of stuff not being quite what you were hoping for is amplified by so many other recent adaptations being so good.

dunmeshi does not have a bad anime by any means, but a lot of that is thanks to the source material's quality. if they do another season, i hope they have more time/budget/whatever because i think a lot of the parts it does have are good parts! but in this case, i wasn't hoping for good; i was hoping for great.

trigger makes great shows with wacky storylines (in some ways, the same one wacky storyline, but that's a different discussion) and dunmeshi, being directed by someone who's worked on a bunch of trigger stuff (largely sci-fi leaning), maybe needed some more direction from people who've worked on fantasy stuff? i can't say for sure what would've been enough to take the show over the top, but though i generally don't hope for much from adaptations, i really did have higher hopes for this one than it ended up achieving.

overall it seems i'll end up scoring the show a 7 or 7.5 when i finish the season, though there's certainly still room to wow us all. whatever you feel about the adaptation, whether you liked it or not, whether or not you've read the manga, feel free to comment your thoughts below or in my inbox. let's keep it free of manga spoils for anime-only watchers, though!
