guys cmon. be ffr please. akemi did Not love taigen. the only reason why she was desperate to search for him to the point of putting herself in danger is because she didn't want to get married to an abusive man (which she believed at the time that takayoshi was). when seki tried to dissuade her from running off, her reason was not "but i love taigen and wanna be with him 🥺" it was because she refused to be controlled and have her autonomy taken from her; she literally says "i won't be locked away in edo married to a stranger." and when seki still tries to argue that getting married to the heir of the shogun would be better than getting caught by brigands, she then says "that kind of man"—referring to takayoshi—"treats women like animals. they say he's a tyrant." and when seki chuckles and says "what man isn't?" her response is "you." she doesn't even talk about taigen. she is using him as much as he was using her. they both see—or, well, saw—each other as means to an end. for taigen he saw that marrying into the tokunobu clan would elevate his status and wealth. for akemi she wanted the right to choose who she married, and she wanted that person to be someone kind. that's it! neither of them loved each other. but since they were courting of course they acted sweet to each other, and they do still care for one another, especially due to their romantic history. but let's be real! akemi is a boss bitch who dropped taigen and forgot all about his ass as soon as she saw takayoshi was a nice guy. because duh? not only is takayoshi a better lover (it's implied their lovemaking lasted a long time) but he's also kinder towards her and presents her with an opportunity to claim power and freedom, which she would not have if she had married taigen, as she would have still been stuck under her father's thumb. so literally why should she settle for taigen's stupid ass! she may be a little naive at times but she's still incredibly intelligent. she would not do something stupid for the sake of "love." you know who would though? taigen.

I DID MY COMEDY PERFORMANCE TODAY!!! in front of like 200 people!!! and i didnt stutter or forget what to say!!! and people laughed!!!
Tumblr media
#i wasnt THE funniest other performances got better reactions but that was largely because the people performing were popular#point is people laughed !! two girls i barely know came up to me after and said i was really good! (thank you nikita and i forgot your name#and according to one of my friends some mullets were making fun of me during my thing and then a popular girl behind them was like#hey stop dont do that#so thats cool#and the girl whos lockers next to mine also complimented my comedy thing after so that was nice#+ one of the other ppl performing who i used ro be super good friends with (years ago) was very engaged and laughing which was nice :-)#we may not be close friends anymore but yk its nice to still get along 👍#also two of my friends also performed and they did well too ‼️ it was very cool#anyway im very proud of myself for being able to perform in front of that many people cos i have literally never done that#the last time i spoke to an audience of more than 30 people was year 4 assembly and that was like 100 ppl max#so yea im very happy lol. especially considering that the past three years weve been doing persuasive speeches instead of comedy#(comedy was introduced this year to try it out instead of persuasive speeches)#and for the past 2 years ive done my speeches to just the teacher and a few friends cos i dont like giving persuasives to the whole class#(which i still feel tbh) but like. i can do comedy and play a character in front of an audience! which is pretty awesome

There's a few tropes popping up in my register as I back comb through the entirety of the Penelope/Benedict tag (which is not that big of an ordeal as it may seem considering there's only 64 of them and I haven't sorted out the ones that involve Colin) and a lot of them are the common you know forced marriage, compromising, arrangement of convenience etc but I've picked up on a funny little dichotomy:
Benedict is very sweet and dotting and admiring—a handsome man coming to sweep Penelope off her feet in a joking way as they either find themselves married off or arranged to be so amongst one another, and are pleasantly surprised by the tender feelings that creep up on them. This one strikes me as very austenesque.
Benedict accidentally walks in on a naked Penelope or finds her engaged in whichever licentious act, and is so immediately utterly horny someone has to physically step in and remove him from the situation, and then he's off chasing after her so hard he (also accidentally) crosses the cusp of lust into love without noticing. This one is very fun.
I enjoy both very much, it goes without saying

ask 1 of 3 because I fully expect complicated to essays to this as you answer for practically all of your WoLs
8. How did they feel about the liberation of Ala Mhigo? Do they feel it could have been handled differently? Where they at all bothered by how they were involved?
{original question collection post - curious about anything else?}
Oh you are absolutely getting essays, especially with that intro and this question.
The matter of Ala Mhigo and its liberation is something that (un)surprisingly deviates from canon in the fact that all four of them deeply care about seeing it liberated. That resistance you see in canon is non-existent here in part because one of them is Ala Mhigan. You also get the eventual inclusion of W'khittri - another Ala Mhigan - but she's apart of the later groups.
(more below, as usual)
The liberation of Ala Mhigo was a fight they'd wanted to get in on since after becoming a team in ARR. Once they realized how well the four of them worked together and they shared similar goals, that's always been on the agenda. Seraphin is from the region and has family stuck in Little Ala Mhigo; Teodore employed Seraphin, sure, but he would see the nation liberated just from how he's seen its treatment at the hands of the Alliance; Gwendoline is effectively an underground chirurgeon that's been taking care of the medical needs of Ala Mhigan refugees who fled to Gridania yet were scorned by the nation, so she's got no delusions over what needs to be done; and while Surkukteni doesn't have many personal ties outside of Seraphin, she is the adoptive daughter of a war refugee (Kitase, a Doman) and would put herself into this for Seraphin's sake alone yet she has so many things pushing her towards this fight. They were planning on helping with the liberation effort after the Praetorium, but of course the Banquet.
The liberation of Ala Mhigo varies in how you get to the jump from Rhalgr's Reach to Kugane in this canon because the group has more political investment in this campaign than canon wol does (yes I'm still angry that "this isn't my fight" is an option to pick but not for Ishgard? the fight you were forced into?). This all started as far back as Surkukteni forging better ties between Little Ala Mhigo, the U Tribe, and the Amalj'aa groups - first the Brotherhood of Ash, and then slowly working with the tempered tribes. This was the backdrop of ARR for her as she helped them build up an alliance against the Immortal Flames and Ul'dah, which put them in a position to be in on Ilberd's plans since the four are significantly more involved earlier on. It means they have an easier time pulling him out of canon trajectory, they manage to keep him alive, and while he still does a lot of what canon dictates, his staying alive is to be a counter to how Raubahn just melded in with Ul'dahn politics (specifically the Syndicate?) while leaving Ala Mhigo by the wayside. Ilberd helps them integrate more with the Resistance, they spend a lot more time with the Ala Mhigans, and then Rhalgr's Reach falls and the party is now split.
Their main regrets are the fact they couldn't get to it sooner and so many people suffered as a result of it. The Dragonsong War was something they never intended on getting involved in, yet they got swept away in it and two of them came out of it really fucked up (Seraphin's left leg was mauled and struggles a bit with tanking, while Surkukteni nearly died against Nidhogg and lost a large chunk of her left side - both have limps, both struggle with their original jobs, and it sucks). They regret that they weren't as thorough that they could have been, but especially that they were put into a situation where they did have to split between Ala Mhigo and Doma - Surkukteni and Gwendoline went to Doma with most of the extra party members while Seraphin and Teodore stayed behind. Even though Seraphin wanted to stay, he still feels awful that he's not as useful as he could've been. Even though Surkukteni wanted to help Doma, she's still pissed that the cost of getting more military support for Ala Mhigo was the political freedom of her birthplace.
Surkukteni could've gone without Hien's involvement and the interference into the Steppe's rite of succession just to get more aid for Ala Mhigo, could've gone without getting further disabled by Zenos to where she effectively gave up on ever being a Dragoon again, could've gone without Papalymo's and Conrad's deaths, and really could've gone without the nasty attitude the Alliance took when she began to help the Resistance. Gwendoline - as someone who goes to Othard - shares many of Surkukteni's regrets.
Seraphin could have gone without some people (a fair number of the Scions, unfortunately) questioning his involvement and his commitment. He would've preferred if they could've dealt with it without having to bargain with other nations just to ensure that his parents could return home. He wishes they had, had a stronger front against Garlemald when Rhalgr's reach fell, and it makes him sick to his stomach that they weren't there sooner since so much of the physical home that his clan and his adoptive family used to live on is now just decimated by the Garlean's conquest. Teodore - similarly - shares a lot of these regrets.
The original WoLs wanted to be involved in Ala Mhigo's liberation and were building up rapport with both the Resistance and various factions impacted by Garlemald's campaign, but the Dragonsong War threw a wrench in all of that and caused so many problems within the group that required them to seek the aid of nations that wanted nothing to do with this conflict. They could only throw around their titles so much, and the only wish they had acted sooner and more efficiently - then maybe they wouldn't have lost so many people.
Bonus: mentioned the Amalj'aa here briefly, but this aspect is something that is a really major part of my rewrite. It's involving the tribes more into MSQ, and this aspect is how it doesn't really make much sense for the Ala Mhigan refugees to be automatically against any of the Eorzean Tribes considering how they are with the Ananta. While it's understandable that there are a great number of tempered factions, I don't feel like it's very fair for them to hold that same animosity that the nations do to even the non-tempered. Hence the arrangements struck between Little Ala Mhigo and the Brotherhood of Ash before it expanded to the three main groups of Southern Thanalan excluding anything associated with Ul'dah. This carries over to various Amalj'aa joining in the Resistance effort, wider ties with the Eorzean tribes, and eventually you see a fair number of people not aligned with the Eorzean Alliance working within Gyr Abania for the liberation of Ala Mhigo (so the energy we see in 5.4 and on but much earlier), and it's in part intentional to humiliate the Alliance into doing something. This is an entire thing that I can very easily ramble about, but basically just to summarize: the Grand Companies have to be coerced into fighting on the side of Ala Mhigo in canon, so the solution in the rewrite is to not rely on them and instead rely on bonds that the WoL group have formed over the course of their adventures - which means everything's gonna look a bit different.
Tl;dr: they weren't upset that they were involved; they were upset that they weren't involved sooner and only could do so with all this needless baggage.

I have like. Two clear options ahead of me in case I get a remote job:
Stay in hometown, dont pay rent or utilities but be bored out of mind with only 2 friends in the city that i see occasionally? Basically save money till i can get a job abroad
Or move to capital, progress my relationship with the Guy I Am Seeing That I Am Starting to Like Too Much, dont save as much money but be in a central location where i can Do Stuff, Have Fun etc, and just. Enjoy life instead of getting ready for the Next Thing and go abroad when i get a job there.
Im v conflicted bc at one hand saving money would be nice but at the other hand. I will be bored to death here. And im tired of getting ready to the next milestone jfkfjkfbf

you know i mentioned last night that i realized only *after* i started rereading david copperfield that since i recently became an aunt, i was gonna see the story from a whole new angle and start relating more to betsey trotwood. i didn't even think about how at salem house i was gonna be poor mr. mell...
#i mean i didnt really think about mr. mell much because he's more of a minor character#he doesnt come back throughout david's life like steerforth or traddles or emily or agnes or#or or or all these other dozen major characters#in fact i only think of salem house as a minor part of the book. the shit we gotta get through to get to aunt betsey again#in a sense i cant wait to be done with it again#but oh my god reading about the rowdy schoolroom and how he's hardly managing to handle his stress#MEEEEE!!!!!! ME AN EDUCATOR#diana rereads david copperfield#literally just let me fucking play my flute badly in peace#you know i really have grown up a lot in the past 5 years bc all the adults used to just be caricatures to me#in the sense that all of dickens' characters are kind of caricatures. theyre exaggerated and silly#whether theyre supposed to be archetypal good or bad people.#because the way dickens uses hyperbole. sometimes it's just too true!#like the assholery of steerforth. how disingenuous but charming and persuasive he can be#that is SO true to how it feels to look up to older people as a young child. david copperfield's yielding to him is so realistic#david copperfield's own childish innocence throughout the early chapters seems comical but is emotionally true to how childhood feels.#these were the parts of the novel that resonated with me very deeply at 19. and they still do#but oh now. now i understand the position of the working adults. especially since i work w kids now how different it all feels.#and have worked w kids for several years too. but only about a year after reading dc. actually almost 2 years#im one of the bumbling incompetent adults. oh dear. oh lord.

you can play through pentiment and just never go talk to certain characters, the first part of the game I didnt go out of my way to explore the whole town so there were a significant amount of characters I never met 😭 I did not go talk to the Miller once.
But there's so much stuff you can do and only so much time that it makes me really want to play again once I'm done and investigate things I didnt before. (I'm still not done with my playthrough btw)

thinks about wren and how adaptable they are when it comes to social settings. they'll gladly hang out with u no matter the occasion, whether it's a chill diner or a party or a festival or anything u could think of.
of course, they DO have their preferences. and that's to simply... move from place to place, change up the scenery and the activity spontaneously, explore and discover and possibly eat on the way. to follow their instincts and whims, and to do so with willing company. i think THAT'S what they thrive on.
