reading into the gwenverse and spider-gwen: shadow clones back-to-back was such a bad idea because now I can clearly see they keep rehashing the same shit over and over and OVER again, ideas and character beats that were already done and done BETTER in the earlier runs.
Gwen wants to be normal but she can't be normal. She and her dad fight about her being Ghost Spider. She and MJ fight about her commitment to the band. She contacts Reed about technology to advance the arc's plot. And these are literally the ONLY relationships they commit to continuing (and in terribly superficial ways) that are not 616!Peter. She hasn't interacted with Miles in any meaningful way in ages! She thought about calling Harry ONCE about 15 issues ago and hasn't thought about him since! Glory (who was actually her closest friend on The Mary Janes) hasn't spoken a word in issues, and forget Betty lmao. Her world is so empty because every writer refuses to expand it AND continues to just create alternate copies of Gwen and "develop" the relationships between them that it feels borderline masturbatory.
You can't claim that Gwen lives in this "low-super" world and then continue to put her in these very "high-super" situations, such as the debacle with the 616!Jackal, the King in Black arc, everything related to the Spider-Verse and her pretty sizeable appearances in those issues, the GWENVERSE (which had another terrible villain based on influencer culture that they gave a half-assed sympathetic backstory to, FYI), and now the Shadow Clones. Over half the time she's not even on her earth anymore! If the writers can't find a way to make earth-65 interesting because they either don't know how to deal with Gwen's public identity OR they're bad at writing any decent character introspection or building up relationships readers actually WANT to read about, then either retcon that shit or just abandon earth-65 altogether and have Gwen become a permanent transplant to 616 (not my ideal scenario but better than them pussyfooting around with cloning or multiverse hijinks while giving Gwen the same problems without resolving shit).
Spider-Gwen worked when she was grounded in HER world. When there were consequences to every act she committed as Spider-Woman. And sometimes those consequences were very steep. She went to jail! She developed feelings for her best friend and she couldn't date him because half the general public hated her! A local gang tried to kill said best friend and her bandmates while she tried to let loose for ONE fucking night! While Gwen's fate as a superhero was and is still fantastic, the problems she faced were relatable and made her endearing, problems tied to themes of responsibility, guilt, rejection, acceptance, and balance. But ever since her constant back-and-forth between earth-65 and earth-616, she's lost that relatability, and the problems she currently faces are so divorced from reality and tied up in meta-commentary that unless you're insane like me and have deep knowledge of Spider-Man lore, you're gonna be lost practically all the time. Hell, even WITH my knowledge, I'm just baffled by these creative choices! While I acknowledge that the Gwenverse and Shadow Clones arcs are committing to this idea that Gwen could have been anything on earth-616 but her death ultimately upended her possibilities, that's not the only idea worth a damn. AND (and), that idea was ALREADY done and done better in the original Spider-Gwen run, making these series feel redundant and self-indulgent.
anyway make Spider-Gwen relatable again and develop an interpersonal relationship that's not her dad, MJ, or fucking Peter Parker 2k23

Just saw somebody genuinely recommend the gwenverse series and I realized I'm not sure I ever explained here why I hate it so much, so... Is there an interest in reading me tearing it to shreds?

My thoughts on... (Part 3) Spider-Gwen: Gwenverse 2022 (#1-5)
They ultimately decide to change up their strategy and attack the terminal six on their hometurf. This doesn't go well as none of the Gwen's are able to work together, they all dislike and/or hate each other. And they're just not synced up. Spider-Gwen gets into a fight with Nightbird and is able to knock her mask off revealing to Gwen that she's another variant of her. This variant is a super interesting one as even though she wasn't created by the accident, she still represents a part of Gwen. The part that sees herself more as a villain than a hero, and ultimately this variant has accepted her role as the villain. This once again shows how each part of Gwen needs each other and what happens if she ignores certain parts of herself. Eventually Nightbird and the terminal six manages to escape. The Gwenvengers once again regroup and learn of the final Gwen variant that is roaming around in the timeline. Gwen Jones aka Captain Marvel. Gwen Jones is pretty similar to Spider-Gwen, she struggles to balance her life as Gwen and her life as Captain Marvel. She always tries to do the right thing and she's even loved the by the people. However that soon would change, as she is fighting against Yon-Rogg both the terminal six (might be good to point out that at this point they're the terminal two) and the Gwenvengers arrive. A fight breaks out and Captain Marvel tries to stop the Gwenvengers as they're indirectly hurting civilians. Nightbird is able to take down Captain Marvel and reveals the truth to her. Gwen Jones was a clone body fused together with the essence of Mar-Vell. She was sent by the Kree to earth not to save it but to destroy it. Upon realizing this her powers grow unstable and the supreme inteligence realizes that she is about to turn on them. So they overload the source of her power, the nega bands. Unable to contain so much power she flies up to the sky, filled with guilt and the knowledge that there is always more bad than good. And then she dies as her body explodes and all of the energy is set free. The Gwenvengers escape through a portal but Spider-Gwen realizes what just happenend. This was the event that caused her universe to become an enhanced anti-hero police state. Everything they did up until that point just further helped shape that reality. The mechs that the police use to defeat heroes were built by the company Stark and Osborn ran, the hate for heroes came from the explosion. Despite all their efforts it seems that Gwen's reality as she knows it is gone. Spider-Zero tells them that they have one more chance, stop Finale at the end of time and revert everything.
And so they travel to the end of time to try and put a stop to Finale and her plan. However the fight turns out as all of their other ones. They still can't work together and its costing them everything. As Spider-Gwen lies defeated on the floor she comes to a realization. Everywhere she goes, she gets reminded of her guilt. Reminded as to what happened to Peter, the things she did, the things she wanted to avoid but couldn't. She wanted to avoid the guilt that had been haunting her, try to hold everything together as best as she can. She doesn't want people that people want to be her because of all those reasons. Because in the end, wanting to be her is also what got Peter killed. And that's where the source of her self hatred came from, guilt. As she points this out to the others, they all start to realize they going through the same. Thorgwen goes through the guilt of being preferred by Odin even thought she is not his true child and that it caused Loki to go mad. Gwen Rogers feels guilt for taking Samantha Wilson's mantle and legacy causing people to forget about her. Gwen Howlett feels guilt for all the terrible things she has done. Toni Stacy feels guilt for driving appart the two people she considered to be her parents. Nightbird feels guilt for knowing that even though the goblin gas made her evil, those thoughts were always there all along and the gas just let it out. Guilt also destroyed Gwen Jones as she felt guilty for being sent to destroy the planet she had grown to love. Upon realizing this they are finally able to forgive themselves and each other for what they've done. It's a super powerful character moment for Gwen. Yes we've seen her deal with her guilt and try to overcome it before. But we've never seen her actually forgive herself, despite overcoming most of the guilt she felt it always lingered in the back of her mind. And now for the first time she is able to forgive not only herself but all parts of herself. She realizes she needs every part of herself and that every part of her has to work together so she can become the best possible version of herself that she can be. And that's what happens. Every variant of Gwen realizes this and they are finally able to work together as one. All parts that make up Gwen finally accept each other and become stronger because of it. They defeat finale but they are too late. Time is collapsing in on itself and soon the entire multiverse will be gone. They find a way to travel back to the point before Finale uses the machine. However they only have enough power to send through one person. All the Gwen variants realize it has to be Spider-Gwen. She's the original and the only one left with a future. The rest of them have nothing to go back to. It's a super emotional moment and extremely heartbreaking. These variants were like sisters to her and now she's losing them. She eventually goes back and defeats Finale but once again time collapses in on itself. Gwen sees fragmented pieces of the multiverse in front of her eyes and decides to do the impossible. She holds together the entire multiverse with her webs and manages to save it. Everything is restored and it is even hinted at that all of the variants now have their own universe. After this things return to normal and Gwen is better than ever before. She appreciates the people around her no matter how annoying they can get and most importantly she appreciates and likes herself. And that's how this story ends. Her swinging of as she monologues about how she finally likes herself. It's a super strong and emotional moment and it really made me tear up as it showed how much Gwen has grown as a person and character over the years.
Gwenverse was an absolute blast to read and honestly i wouldn't mind them doing a 2nd Gwenverse or giving her variants their own stories! All of her variants are such interesting characters and i love how they each represent a part of Gwen and that she has to learn to accept all of those parts as the things that make up her as a person. It's a very clever way to further explore her character while giving us fresh takes on the character and delving into what makes Gwen Stacy, Gwen Stacy. I really loved the artstyle in this too and all the designs for her variants were so so good. I loved how each design incorporated her iconic hood or headband in one way or another. This story also managed to further progress Gwen's character as she finally is able to forgive herself. It's such an emotional moment and seeing her finally like herself after everything is such an amazing thing to see. Her saying goodbye to all of her variants and remembering them was incredibly emotional too and i did tear up a few times while reading the final issue of this mini event. All by all amazing stuff that is just an amazing read start to finish!
