Emile yelped, his arms flailing wildly in the air as he tripped over his own feet. He fell forward, but only just managed to avoid hitting the ground when a pair of arms caught his waist.
Instead of falling to the ground, he fell into Remus's chest.
He blinked, and then pulled back just enough to smile at Remus. A wide grin appeared on Remus's face in response.
"I caught you, now I can do whatever I like with you," Remus joked.
Emile laughed. "Thank you for saving me, honey. And I hope that 'whatever you want' includes lots of kisses."
"Duh."
Emile glanced down at the roller skates on his feet, and then he looked back up at Remus. A slightly sheepish expression appeared on his face.
"Maybe I shouldn't have picked roller skating for today's date," he said. "I'm kinda bad at it."
"But that just makes it more fun!"
"That is a good point!" Emile agreed with a smile. "And the more I practise it, the better I'll become. Maybe next time I'll be a master at roller skating, like you."
"Yeah!" Remus cheered. "And then we can have a roller skate battle to the death!"
He grinned widely, showing off two rows of teeth. Emile laughed, poking Remus's shoulder with his finger. Somehow, Remus's grin widened even more at the contact.
"You're silly," Emile said. "It wouldn't be much of a battle. Fighting isn't exactly my cup of tea."
"You're too adorable to fight."
"Thank you." Emile smiled.
He then reached upwards, pressing a quick, sweet kiss to Remus's lips.
"I love you," he said.
"Love you, too," Remus responded. "Wanna race to the other side of the rink?"
"Sure, but I'm pretty sure you'll win."

*Ahem* Can You Do “Why Did You Invite Me Again?” With Analogical? (I Miss Them)
Virgil Liddell had always been more of a quiet type, he rarely spoke or left his house, and it wasnt something he'd fallen into as an adult, even as a kid he didnt want to experience the outside world.
Which made it surprising that he ended up friends with Patton Boleyn of all people, Patton with the broad smile and the cookie tray and quick-witted humor, Patton who managed to reduce the great Janus Hyde to mush with a simple twirl of his hair and bat of his eyelashes, that was who Virgil had made friends with.
And of course, by extension, he was friends with Patton's friends.
Roman Prince-Duke and Remus Duke-Prince were of course, twins. Roman was almost as reserved as Virgil, he hadnt been in highschool, but now it seemed the only time he spoke was when he was with his boyfriend Remy, and he never spoke about highschool, he'd have to leave the room sometimes if it was mentioned, especially his and Patton's old cheer squad. Patton didnt know why, so everyone agreed it was best to simply let him talk it out with a therapist instead. Remus on the other hand was a complete party animal, he had pictures from almost every party that year, the bull of which came from his first party with Emile, which mainly consisted of make-out shots.
And then of course there was Logan Sanders, Logan with the bright eyes that shone like stars when you mentioned the things he liked, Logan with the shy smile and quiet voice, that suddenly became the loudest in the room when it was necessary.
Logan who Virgil loved, but couldnt possibly put through the pain of dating someone like him.
"So, why did you invite me again?" Virgil said over the phone.
"Its a surprise Vi! I cant tell you!" Patton responded.
"Oh yeah that makes me feel loads better," Virgil said bitterly.
"I promise it's not a mafia kidnapping," Patton said, Virgil heard him blowing his hair out of his face over the receiver.
"Sure whatever," Virgil replied.
Eventually he reached the location Patton had sent him, and boy was it something. An ornate building with large glass windows and fish tanks by the door, so most likely a seafood restaurant.
And then he turned and saw Logan, and he'd be lying if he said his heart hadnt skipped a few beats.
"Oh uh- hello Virgil," Logan said sheepishly.
"Hey- Lo-" Virgil replied, rubbing the back of his neck.
"Patton sent you here to huh?" Logan asked.
"Do you think hes setting us up?" Virgil shot back.
"Definitely, do you accept?" Logan replied.
"I've waited for something like this my whole life," Virgil answered.

I don't know if you do prompts, but if you do, I was wondering if you'd ever consider adding a part in the Bogeyman!Virgil verse where the family has a fight.
Kids at that age are so temperamental, and they say things they don't mean to their family when they're so young, expressing hatred a lot. It's bound to happen, and siblings especially fight so often.
I could imagine one of the kids screaming at Virgil that he's a monster, not their real brother, that they hate him, that they hope they never see him again. It's pretty standard for a child, but I doubt Virgil would know that, and with his past of being unloved, I could see him immediately being heartbroken and devastated.
Love your work!
Sorry it took so long to get to this anon! The one-shot I wrote for this one actually ended up being like twice as long as usual :) I can imagine all of the kids, especially Roman or Patton getting upset with him pretty easily. And maybe this would also work for Thomas, I mean a single father of four kids would probably end up getting mad at them and hurting their feelings unintentionally every once in a while.
Anyway here’s the fic, I added Remus and Emile in just because (warnings for angst, fear, and Roman being an asshole at the beginning)
It was an accident. He didn’t mean to break it. He would’ve never broken one of their toys on purpose. He stared blankly at Roman’s plastic sword, the blade bent at a very noticeable angle. Roman’s eyes widened as he gazed at the damage, snatching the sword from Virgil’s hands to get a closer look. His eyes filled with tears instantly, big drops falling onto his broken weapon.
Virgil bit at his lip, guilt filling his stomach as he crouched down in front of him. He put a hand on Roman’s shoulder in an attempt to calm him. “I’m sorry Ro, I didn’t mean—” Roman shoved his hand away with a whimper, smacking him as hard as he could with his sword. Virgil flinched, despite the kid’s blow not causing him any pain. “I’m sorry, okay? We can get you a new one.”
“No! I liked this one!”
“Well...then maybe we could—”
“No!” Roman shrieked. “Go away! I hate you!” Virgil’s heart sunk into his stomach.
“Y-You don’t mean that Ro.” Virgil tried to put his hand back on Roman’s shoulder, but only got another smack from his toy sword.
“My sword was broken by a meanie monster.” Roman muttered angrily. As he stomped out of the bedroom and down the stairs, Virgil stayed crouched, watching him leave with glazed over eyes. It had been so long since he had been called a monster, he had forgotten how much it stung. And now it hurt much, much more.
He took a shaky breath, gaze shifting to the ground. Roman did tell him to go away...
Okay. He’ll go away.
Thomas had heard Roman screaming and ran to the stairs, just in time to see the kid in question storming down with tearful eyes, and Virgil melting into the shadows and leaving. In Roman’s hands was his favorite toy sword, now bent beyond usable. “Oh Roman, what happened?”
“Virgil broke it! He’s a big meanie!” Thomas glanced up the stairs, where Virgil had disappeared. Not hearing Patton talking to him in the living room or Logan asking him questions in Virgil’s room meant he probably wasn’t anywhere in the house. Of course of all the sons to disappear after an emotional outburst it just had to be the one who could teleport.
“Were you two playing and it broke, or was he mad and broke it?”
“We were playing, and he was holdin’ it, and then he smacked it against the wall and it broke!”
“Do you think he meant to break it?” Roman huffed, wiping at his eyes before crossing his arms.
“...No, but he still broke it.” A bit of relief filled Thomas at that, but he would never tell Roman. Son or not, he wasn’t sure if we would know how to calm down an angry bogeyman that intentionally breaks his adopted brother’s toys.
“Do you know where Virgil went?” Roman blinked, the question breaking him out of his anger for a moment. He looked back up the stairs, eyes glancing around for a moment, surprised at Virgil’s absence, before huffing and turning back around.
“...No, but good riddance! He broke my sword!” Thomas took a deep breath. Okay, so Virgil could be anywhere. Now he just had to hope he was somewhere with a stable connection; maybe he could call him. If not, he might’ve just lost a son. His heart began to pound at that, but he hid his worry before Roman could see.
Right, he had to deal with Roman first. He slowly took the broken sword from Roman’s hands, rubbing gentle circles into his back. “I’ll see if I can fix this. If it can bend without breaking, I might be able to bend it back. Why don’t you watch some cartoons with Patton while I give that a try?”
“But what if you end up breaking it more?”
“Then I can get you a new one. We might even be able to get you a new one today if you want.”
Roman whimpered. “But I like mine.”
“I know you do, bud. But sometimes...things break and have to be replaced. Nothing lasts forever.” Thomas glanced up the stairs, hoping to see Virgil returning. Still missing. “I’ll need you to apologize to Virgil later, okay? You said a lot of mean things to him, and probably made him feel really bad. And he’ll have to apologize for breaking your toy. Sound good?”
Roman was still clearly upset, but he nodded anyway, staring down at his feet as he thought. Thomas ushered him into the living room to distract him with the TV, then sent a text to Virgil’s phone, hoping he would get it.
Virgil had gone back to his cave. After officially moving in with his dad and brothers, he had expected to never want to—or feel the need to—come back here. But it was just as cold as he remembered. He sat with his back against the wall, staring through unfocused eyes as the shadows on the other side of the cave seemed to taunt him.
Maybe they were. Maybe they were thinking “what an idiot, caring for humans. It’d never work out in the end. Something always goes wrong.” At least that was what he was thinking. He knew how quickly humans could turn on other humans, it would make sense for them to turn on him much quicker.
His body was still weighed down by guilt. He broke Roman’s favorite toy, of course he would be mad. Virgil knew if one of them had broken something of his, he would probably be pretty upset. His words still rang in his ears, though.
He’d stay in the cave until things might have settled down. Then maybe he’d go back and talk to Dad.
Virgil was gone for two days by the time Roman felt just as much guilt and fear as the bogeyman himself was feeling. Thomas was trying his best to stay calm, knowing Virgil was fully capable of taking care of himself, but that fatherly panic was beginning to take over.
Virgil had told him about the cave he used to live in, and Thomas assumed that he had gone to stay there. But he had no clue where it was. As far as he knew, Virgil could be in some sort of Floridian cave less than a mile away or a cave all the way in Australia. He kept texting and calling in hopes that he would answer, but the chances of him having wi-fi in a cave was slim to nil.
He told Remus about Virgil’s disappearance, hoping that the only other person with demon children would know where his cave was. What he got as his answer was Remus putting him on hold for a whole hour, then coming back to say a terrifyingly serious “I’m on the case” before being hung up on. Whatever Remus was up to only made him more worried.
Virgil hadn’t expected to start his third day in his cave being tackled by two other bogeymen. He let out a startled curse as the two slammed into him and shoved him into the shadows, taking him with them back to their home. He growled, glaring at the two kids and preparing to fight back, before realizing where he was.
Remus bopped his head with a rolled-up newspaper, Emile grinning eagerly behind him. “Hey there Vee!” Virgil sighed, his heart rate beginning to drop back to normal.
“Hey...”
“Uncle Thomas has been real worried about you.” Remus spoke, looking the newspaper over in his hands as if it were a weapon.
“He has?” Virgil tried to keep the hopeful tone out of his voice.
“Well fuckin’ duh! He wouldn’t have called me of all people if he wasn’t!”
“Did he ask you to get your kids to kidnap me?”
“No, that was my idea.” Emile responded happily, bringing Virgil over to the couch and giving him a cup of hot chocolate. “I thought it’d be funny. Sorry if it scared you.”
“It’s fine, I guess.” Virgil watched as Janus stuck his tongue out at him, a grin on his face as he ran off down to his bedroom, Remy following soon after. Remus kicked his feet up on the coffee table, looking at him expectantly.
“So you gonna teleport back home, or do ya want one of us to drive you there like a human?” Virgil couldn’t answer. It was nice to hear that Dad was worried, but he was more concerned about how Roman felt. Emile seemed to sense his unease, ruffling his hair a bit.
“Thomas told us what happened, and Roman’s really sorry. This sort of thing just sort of happens with kids. Kids as old as your brothers get upset really easily and say things they don’t mean.” A warm smile spread across his face, slowing Virgil’s skipping heart and steadying his constantly anxious mind.
“Roman doesn’t actually hate you, especially not because of just one mess-up. Kids’ brains aren’t exactly developed enough to properly respond to things that upset them, anyway, so this is pretty normal.” Virgil nodded slowly, staring down at the hot chocolate in his hands.
Remus giggled excitedly, saying in the most affectionate voice Virgil had ever heard “I bet you could destroy the world with those smarts, Lilo and Switch.” Emile’s cheeks turned red, and his smile was redirected at his boyfriend.
“It’s just basic developmental psychology, nothing but fifteen minutes of googling will tell you this much.” Remus just hummed happily. Emile turned his attention back to Virgil. “So what do you say? You wanna go back now, or wait a bit?” Virgil pulled his jacket tighter around himself. He did miss the house...and his room...and his family.
He sighed, his anxiety failing as he placed down the cup of hot chocolate, stood up, and without another word dropped into the shadows.
Virgil appeared in his room, relieved (and for whatever reason a bit upset) that no one was there. He gulped, debating whether it would be more awkward to walk out and find the others or just wait there until someone comes in. But Dad decided that for him, singing a song from a musical he hadn’t shown Virgil yet as he went about cleaning the house.
Dad stared up at him, expression blank as his brain tried to figure out what was going on. The memory of their first time seeing each other face-to-face played in Virgil’s head—and wow, he looked just as confused as he did back then.
The lightbulb went off in his brain and his eyes widened, dropping his cleaning supplies and pulling him into a hug, letting out a relieved, almost delirious laugh. “Oh thank goodness you’re okay!” Warmth filled Virgil’s heart as he hugged back as best he could, his arms pinned to his sides by Dad’s tight grip. “You were at your cave, right? I really need to figure out where that place is.”
“Janus and Remy know, Emile sent them to kidnap me and bring me to their place.”
Dad pulled away, eyes wide. “They kidnapped—” He stumbled over his words, sounding both alarmed and confused, before going silent. “You know what, I’m not even surprised.”
“Yeah, those guys are weird.”
“How did those kids know where the cave was, though?” Virgil shrugged.
“I think all three of us were formed there, they just never actually lived there. That’s my best guess at least.”
“Well...I’m just glad they found you. We’ve all been really worried.” Virgil heard four small feet running up the stairs and over to his door, two faces peering in. Smiles spread across Logan and Patton’s faces as they practically tackled Virgil to the ground, clinging onto him as if he’d disappear if they let go. Virgil hugged them back, just happy to see them again.
Then he heard another pair of feet run up the stairs, and Roman appeared in the doorway. Virgil gave him an uneasy smile. “I’m...sorry for breaking your toy, Ro, I didn’t mean—”
Roman’s lip began to quiver and tears streamed down his cheeks as he ran to hug Virgil, clinging on tightly as he babbled out apologies until his words were completely unintelligible. Virgil awkwardly hushed him, running a hand through his hair as his incoherent babbling began to die down. “It’s fine, Ro, I’m okay.”
“It’s not fine!” Roman whined. “You disappeared for two days and I was really mean to you and I thought you’d never come back and I’m sorry!” Virgil looked to Dad, hoping he would be able to help. Dad came over and gently shushed Roman, saying “Virgil’s here now, he’s not gonna leave, we’re all gonna be okay, bud.”
Roman slowly calmed down, tears no longer falling from his eyes and breathing beginning to steady. Dad asked Logan and Patton to go back downstairs while he talked with Roman and Virgil. He had to make sure his two oldest kids would be okay.

Snakes and Scandals (Pt.1)
-------------------------
Virgil Blanche hated a lot of things, that was a given. He was, after all, an extremely poor twenty-two year old man living in the slums of a high-end empire city. Every day he would sit through nearly ten hours of abuse from costumers who were raised to think they were better than everyone else, and even the ones who weren't born rich were corrupted very quickly.
"Excuse me? Is this still eligible for a return? I tried at another store and they rejected me but I only bought it a few days ago," Virgil merely sighed at the hat and scarf clad man in front of him.
"If you bought it less than two months ago its eligible for return, if someone told you it wasn't you can file a complaint," Virgil never spoke very clearly, but he appreciated the man at least pretending to understand what he was saying.
"Thank you," it was at this point Virgil seemed to register that the man was speaking with a slight russian accent.
"Have a nice day," Virgil said in a monotone voice.
The day continued as all days working in customer service usually did, of course, had Virgil checked his calendar, maybe he would've realized that it was National Frame a Retailer For Flirting With You day. He didn't have much time to react, whoever the girl who'd used him as a cheating scapegoat was, she was very quiet, and her boyfriend was very fast.
"You tryna make her look dumb? Huh? Is that what you want?" Virgil tried to protest but ended up with a faceful of knuckles instead.
He should've known it wouldn't end well for him, at least he wasnt dead, but now he had a bloody face and was sitting in the managers office, waiting to hear his fate.
"So you punched him?" Virgil's boss was very stereotypical, blonde, bob-cut, light brown eyes, and Virgil knew she hated him. She always acted excited about his new piercings or tattoos, and of course she congratulated him when she found out he'd finally managed to afford top surgery after saving up since age fourteen. But he could tell it was all fake. He wasn't social enough for customer service, after all.
"In self defense, only after he broke my nose," Virgil responded. His manager pursed her lips together, glaring slightly from behind her glasses.
"And you are aware they intended to sue, yes?" Virgil gritted his teeth,of course they were, after all, why attack a store employee if you didn't want to sue them, or, at least, if you didn't want free starbucks every time you showed up.
"No, I wasn't, because they attacked me first," Virgil said calmly.
"I'm sorry Virgil but I'm going to have to fire you," there was no hiding the look of pure glee on the managers face as she delivered the news.
Virgil merely set his name tag on the table and left, all the while clutching his face. It burned, badly, some people needed to go to the gym less.
"You alright dude?" Virgil moved his hand to look at the man in front of him. Tall, skinny, with a mustache on his face and a white streak in his hair. The man had a worried look on his face, though his eyes conveyed a vague crazed look.
"Yeah, sure," Virgil said. He was about to walk away when the taller man grabbed his arm.
"Come with me, I'll help clean you up," Virgil was honestly to tired to argue, so instead he merely followed.
"Roman! I think I found you a new model! A little bruised up but I think he'll be ok soon enough!" Virgil had stopped listening after 'model'.
"Wait wait wait wait wait- I am definitely not a model-" Virgil tried to shrink in on himself.
"Well of course you arent yet! Oh Remus you life saver look at him! He's brilliant!" A boy who looked similar to the one with the mustache rushed out from behind a pillar, planting a kiss on the receptionists cheek as he ran.
Remus smiled, "I'll go get some ice packs and bandages, you two can talk," he said, running off.
"Roman Prince-Duke, head of Rome Fashion Company," Roman said, holding a hand out.
"Virgil Blanche, head of confused and worried emotions company," Virgil said, Roman let out a laugh.
"So what happened? If you're comfortable sharing that is," Roman said, gesturing to Virgil's face.
"Girl got her boyfriend to attack me at work for the sake of coupons," Virgil said, shrugging.
"Oh dear. . ." Roman said, his face falling slightly.
A few minutes later Virgil was sitting on a bench with ice pressed against his face and Roman listening intently as the receptionist told him what he should do.
"Gods Lolo you're so cute when you're being smart," Roman said, smiling and leaning his elbow on his knee, head pressed against his hand. The receptionist's face flushed with color.
Virgil honestly wasn't sure how calling him a model wasn't a joke, yet here he was sitting in the lobby waiting for Roman.
"Alright Virgil! Let's get you ready for your first shoot shall we?" Roman brought Virgil up by the hand, spinning him slightly before guiding him to another room.
"Lucky for you we have plenty of outfits in your size," Roman said.
"Mention my height and the fabric scissors might find their way up your nose," Virgil growled. Being 4'8 never exactly helped his case, he didn't normally get aggressive easily but it was a bit touchy for him.
"Oh dont worry, I learned my lesson with Lo on our first date," Roman said.
An hour or so later Virgil was dressed in a purple sleeveless top with black lace along the neckline, a black corset, ruffled black skirts, and black boots with heels. It felt, nice, and Virgil wasnt sure why. Normally he hated the way he looked in everything, but for once in his life he felt like royalty.
"Remy! I've got a new model for you!" Roman said as they entered another room with all manner of different sets and cameras set up.
A man with a leather jacket and sunglasses popped out from behind one, jaw dropping slightly "Roman you SAINT! Where'd you find him?!" Remy said, circling Virgil and looking him up and down.
"That credit goes to Remus, speaking of which, I've got business to attend to, you boys have fun," Roman said, turning on his heel to leave, the nearly floor length skirt of his outfit sweeping behind him.
"Alright babes you look like you're about to pass out right now so let's take a little break m'kay?" Remy walked with Virgil to a room that seemed primarily composed of bean bags.
They sat there for a while, Remy asking him questions and telling him his own stories. Before suddenly he got up and held a hand out for him. Virgil took it and allowed himself to be lead to a set covered in giant mushrooms and flowers. Remy spent a few minutes posting him, bringing out a few props for him to prop his arms on.
"Now just relax and give me a smile, you look like you're good at subtle, let's try some of those first," said Remy from behind the camera.
Virgil started out the shoot wishing it would be over already, but by the end he couldnt seem to stop looking at his own reflection in the camera lens.
"Oh Jan's going to lose it when he sees these!" Roman said, looking through the pictures from his phone.
"Who's Jan?-" Virgil said, tilting his head slightly.
"Oh you probably know him as Dimitri, he's a rival of mine," Roman handed Virgil a magazine, one scan of the front cover and Virgil recognized the man from a week ago, he was wearing the same hat and scarf as before. He read the caption above it. "Dimitri Gabriel to release new line inspired by endangered reptile species, all proceeds to go to preservation funding, no real scales used," he handed the article back to Roman.
"I've seen that guy, he was returning something the day I got fired," Virgil said.
"Oh even better! He'll recognize you!" Said Roman.
"Wait where are these even going?" Virgil said.
"My stylegram, you dont seem like the type who likes runways, so Remus and I have decided you'll be a social media model," Roman said.
"Well- guess I better make my own account then," Virgil said, pulling out his own phone.
It was only a few minutes before the comments flooded in, he recognized Janus' face, though his handle still conveyed his name as Dimitri. His face flushed red at the compliments. He wasn't quite sure what it was, but the feeling that Janus was impressed by his looks gave him an intense sensation of joy.

A Series Of Soulmate AUs Masterpost
Remus always knew when he was about to switch hearing with his soulmate.
His ears warmed and started to tingle, and he always had a few second warning until he lost his own hearing, and started to hear through his soulmate’s ears. It always lasted at least five seconds, and never more than half a minute, though mostly somewhere in the middle, and usually didn’t give him too much information, though he enjoyed it every time.
He often heard cartoons, and he’d managed to piece together that his soulmate was a therapist through the numerous snippets of patients talking. Once, he’d heard them call his soulmate ‘doc,’ which was as close to a name or nickname as Remus had ever gotten to hearing.
Whenever he heard music, it was almost always Disney or from cartoons, which painted quite the picture of what Remus’s soulmate was like.
He seemed cute and sweet and kind, based on his taste and his choice of career, and absolutely nothing like Remus, himself.
But everyone said that opposites attracted, and Remus already knew that his soulmate was exactly his type. That was how soulmates worked, after all.
Unfortunately, Remus’s voice stopped working whenever he heard through his soulmate’s ears, which made it pretty difficult to leave a message, and the unpredictability of when it happened made it equally hard to plan ahead. He was never much of a planner, though, and was content to just let life happen to him.
They couldn’t really use their soulbond to find each other, but Remus was still happy with what it was, and listening to his soulmate was always the best part of his day.
He’d find him when he found them, and though Remus was impatient, he wasn’t the kind of person to just go out and find him himself.
When he heard the warmth and tingling in his ears, he was listening to music – it was loud and crude, just his taste, but nothing his soulmate hadn’t heard through him before, so he kept it going when the world faded out, and his soulmate’s side faded in.
“-are the Crystal Gems, we’ll always save the day!”
Ah, Steven Universe. Remus’s cousin, Patton, had teamed up with Roman to make Remus watch the show with them, so he was familiar with the theme tune. It also wasn’t the first time he’d overheard his soulmate watching it.
“And if you think we can’t, we’ll always find a way!”
Remus drummed his fingers on his knee in time to the music.
“That’s why the people of this world believe in: Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl and Steven!”
Only a moment after the theme-tune was finished, it faded out and the song Remus was listening to faded back in. It was almost over, and Remus suddenly realised how loud it was, especially in comparison to the song he’d just overheard. Hopefully his soulmate didn’t have sensitive ears.
Remus huffed, flopping back against the couch, and keeping the song at the deafening volume.
That was boring. He’d been hoping for something a little more interesting – some snippet that would tell him more about his soulmate and their life – but apparently fate had had different ideas.
Remus got up, ripping the headphones from his head and dropping them and his phone onto the couch cushions. He went over to his kitchen and decided to make the most terrible snack he could possibly think of. After a moment of consideration, tapping his foot on the kitchen floor tiles and scanning his surroundings, he decided on ketchup and mint chocolate chip ice cream.
For a second, he wondered if he should microwave the ingredients, making it more of a soup, but he decided against it as he really didn’t want to wait that long.
He mixed the two ingredients in the first bowl he could find, grabbing a spoon from the drawer and then sitting on his kitchen counter, pulling his legs up to sit cross-legged.
He ate slowly, savouring the sweet and sour mix of food that he knew would absolutely horrify everyone he’d ever met. Remus would have to text Roman about his snack lately, simply to nauseate and annoy his twin brother. It tasted good, in Remus’s opinion, but he was always one who liked peculiar flavours.
When Remus finished his snack, he dropped the bowl into the sink, alongside all of the other dishes that had been left there for days. He could clean up another time.
(He would not.)
The moment he took a step out of the kitchen, the warmth and tingling in his ears suddenly resumed.
Remus froze in place. It was uncommon for these things to happen back-to-back like this, but not completely underheard of. Once, a few years ago, it had happened twelve times in one day – twice an hour for six hours in a row – and afterwards Roman had told him that that had meant he’d been close to meeting his soulmate, but had missed the opportunity. After that, Remus had sulked for a week.
Hope began to bubble up inside of him, and Remus immediately grinned. He slumped against the wall, and prepared to listen to what he assumed was likely going to be more Steven Universe.
Instead, when his hearing faded out, and his soulmate’s faded in, he heard something else.
“Gosh, I really hope you can hear this! My friend told me to do this, said it worked for him. I recorded this on my phone, ‘cos you can’t normally hear my voice,” the voice was quick, and it took a moment for it to click in Remus’s head that this must have been his soulmate’s voice. He would’ve gasped if he could have. Instead his voice was stuck in his throat, like it always was when he heard through his soulmate’s ears. “So, um, my address is...”
There was only just enough time for the address to finish, before the sound faded out, and the silence of Remus’s apartment faded back in.
He was frozen in place, his eyes wide.
The voice was male, at least from Remus could tell, which made sense as Remus was gay, and therefore only really attracted to men. It was perfect, and already the most attractive voice Remus had ever heard in his life, and he never wanted to stop hearing it.
A minute passed, and then Remus jumped to work. He sped through his apartment, sifting through the mess of drawers – and making an even bigger mess – as he searched for a pen and a piece of paper. He went over the address again and again and again in his head as he moved, making sure not to forget it and memorizing it quickly.
When he finally found a scrap piece of paper – that had a doodle of a man being beheaded on the back – he immediately scribbled the address over the back.
He stared at it for a few seconds, clutching the paper so tightly that he almost ripped it in half.
Then, he made his mind up.
The plans he had already made for tonight, meeting up with his parents for their fortnightly dinner together, immediately slipped from his head. He had to go to this address.
He rushed over to the couch, picking up his phone and searching up the address, and his eyes lit up and his heart skipped a beat when he realised: his soulmate was close.
A two-hour long drive. Possibly less, if Remus didn’t care about breaking laws and ignoring the speed limit, which he truly did not care about.
He could go to that address right now. He could meet his soulmate today.
Remus had to. He would.
He crumpled the paper up into a ball, shoving it into his pocket along with the pen. He then rushed through his apartment like a hurricane, making an even bigger mess of the place as he searched through drawers for his car keys. For once, he was annoyed with himself at his lack of order, as he usually didn’t have much of an idea of where everything was. Normally he didn’t mind, but right now he was in enough of a hurry that he hated it.
When he finally found his keys, he turned and left his apartment.
He forgot to shut the door behind him, but it would be a while until he remembered that.
He drove faster than the speed limit when he could, but apparently fate was on his side, as he wasn’t at any point pulled over. He was halfway through his drive when the hearing switched again, and, for once in his life, Remus was responsible, and he pulled over to listen.
It was the same voice – another recorded message – and Remus’s heart skipped a beat in his chest.
It started with an awkward laugh – endearing and adorable and it made fireworks go off in Remus’s heart – and then the voice spoke again.
“Maybe I should’ve started with my number,” his soulmate said. “And my name. I got a little ahead of myself there, sorry.” Another awkward laugh. “Um... my name is Emile Picani and my number is...”
Remus grabbed the pen that he’d stuffed into his pocket and scribbled the number across the back of his right hand as it was recited. The hearing faded out, and he was left staring at his hand when the sound of the cars zooming past him faded back in.
After a moment, he dug around in his pockets for his phone, and retrieved it quickly.
He wasted no time adding the contact to his phone, and then texting it immediately.
REMUS
would it be weird for me to come to ur address right now
If Remus were any other man, he would have realised how weird of an opening that was. However, he was not any other man, he was Remus, and that was the best he could come up with.
He didn’t have to wait long for a reply.
EMILE
Umm....
I guess that depends on who you are!
Remus could practically hear that sweet, awkward laugh in his head, and he couldn’t wait for the next time he’d get to hear it in his ears again. Hopefully, that next time would happen face-to-face.
REMUS
soulmate
ur voice is pretty
Remus drummed his fingers on his knee as he waited impatiently for the next text. It only took a couple minutes for the next text to come.
EMILE
Oh my gosh!!! Wow!!!!!

It worked for him and his soulmate but i wasn’t sure it would for us!!!!

REMUS

EMILE

I don’t have work today and it would be jut wonderful to finally meet you!!!
*just
As long as it doesn’t inconvenience you of course
REMUS
Im already close
And he was. A quick glance at his GPS made it known that he was already only an hour away. Just an away from his soulmate’s place, and from finally meeting his soulmate himself.
Remus was ecstatic.
He stuffed his phone into his pocket and restarted his drive.
Again, he drove over the speed limit, but, again, it seemed that fate was on his side, and he wasn’t caught and pulled over.
He got a few complaints from pedestrians when he sloppily parked just down the street from his soulmate’s apartment building, and one even kicked his tire. He ignored them all without hesitation, though, and only just remembered to lock his car behind him as he raced down the street: not quite running, but certainly hurrying.
He passed pedestrians that he paid no mind, darting through the crowd, and then stopped in his tracks when he passed a small stall selling flowers.
Remus paused, his mind moving a mile a minute, before he bought the first bouquet that caught his eye – it was rainbow: a bright, mixture of colours that Remus hoped his soulmate would like.
He wasn’t usually the nice, romantic type, but even Remus wanted to make a good first impression.
It didn’t take long for him to get inside the apartment building – one of the tenants opened the door just before him, and kept holding it open for Remus when they saw him following behind.
He climbed the stairs – he figured running up them was better than taking the elevator, and risking having to stop at every floor. It didn’t take long for him to find his soulmate’s apartment; he checked the address once on the way, and, though his hand-writing was messy and unreadable to most, he knew he was in the right place.
Remus stopped at the door, and knocked loudly.
But before just before it could open, the familiar warmth and tingling of his ears returned, and the moment the door swung open, he still heard it, but through the ears of the man now in front of him, instead of his own.
The man in front of him – his soulmate, his soulmate – was cute. Very, very cute. He had curly hair and wide eyes, and clothes that were pink and beige and neat and clean, as opposed to Remus’s, which were always ripped and messy.
They stared at each other, as they could not yet talk.
Emile’s eyes kept flicking between Remus’s face and the bouquet, and it was only when their hearing switched back that he remembered to hand the flowers to his soulmate.
He held them out, and Emile took them and held them to his chest.
“Thank you.”
