Masamune is so much fun. Playful and bashful and reckless. Mmmmmm ^_^ Approx. 900 words of a silly, sweet, slightly spicy, envious warlord.
Masamune tried to snuggle closer to his wife in bed, but the moment he moved, there was an unhappy feline huff. Shogetsu gave him a disapproving look.
The tiger cub was nestled in the chatelaine’s arms as she slept, and had no intention of moving. Masamune glared at the cub and pointed to the cat bed in the corner but Shogetsu just closed his eyes and ignored the warlord entirely.
The next day, Masamune had pretty much forgotten his annoyance with the precocious cat. There were too many other things to worry about, after all. A fire in one of his territories, an irrigation project, and so on. He took a break around midday to go check on his beloved, and found her lounging in one of the cool upstairs porches.
The chatelaine looked up at him from where she sat, book in hand. Her face lit up at seeing him. “Masamune! I thought you were going to be busy today!”
“I’m never too busy for you, kitten.” He leaned down to kiss her and almost got swiped by a tiger cub paw. Shogetsu was nestled in her lap and was playfully guarding his mistress.
She bopped the cub on the nose. “No! Bad kitty!”
Shogetsu let out an affronted squeaky little roar and then rolled over to show his belly.
Of course, it was impossible to stay mad at him when he did this and he knew it. Weaponized cuteness. The chatelaine struggled to keep her severe look, but a smile broke through and a moment later she was giving the tiger belly-rubs.
Masamune chuckled. “I don’t think he learned his lesson, lass.”
She looked up, “Hmm? I didn’t catch that.”
“It’s not important. I’m glad to see you’re relaxed and enjoying yourself.” He grinned, though to be honest he was feeling a little jealous. Apparently it was better to be a cat than a husband.
“Yeah, me and Shogestsu have been hanging out all morning. We went for a garden walk, ate breakfast and now he’s mostly napping. Must be nice to be a cat!”
“You tell me, kitten.” He reached down to muss her hair, avoiding another swipe by the tiger cub.
“Shogetsu!” They both scolded in tandem.
The cub put a paw over his nose and refused to look up at either of them.
“Awwww,” The chatelaine cooed at the cat and scratched behind his ears.
Masamune felt a small spike of annoyance. He wanted to spend time with his wife, without the interference of a certain spunky cub. “I need to get back to my duties,” he told her, “But tonight, you’re all mine, lass. Got it?”
“Got it,” she grinned.
He went back to his office and got back to reading reports and sending out orders. This kind of work almost made him wish for war. At least in battle, you faced your opponent directly and cut him down with a sword. Administering his lands meant facing enemies with no such simple solution. A never-ending conflict with no clear winner and no way to set the work down.
The day was tiring, but even with all that crowded his thoughts and demanded his attention, a kernel of him held onto anticipation for the night ahead. He thought with the chatelaine by his side, he could survive anything, even endless bureaucracy.
Masamune sent a servant scurrying to get everything ready. A romantic, perfect meal, and an undisturbed evening. He could not wait.
When he was finally able to put away his work, he met with the castle servants to finish his preparations for the evening. They handed everything over to him, and promised no interruptions unless it was an emergency.
He would have preferred to cook for her himself, but a well prepared meal from the castle cooks was the next best thing. Masamune changed clothes, picked up the tray and headed to his rooms.
As he slid the door open, his wife looked up from her embroidery. Her expression slid from pleasure to surprise and laughter. “Masamune! What are you wearing? Are those . . . cat ears?”
He gestured to where Shogetsu lay in her lap, lazily toying with a scrap bit of fabric. “I decided since my lovely lass likes cuddling kitties, I would be your tiger tonight.” Masamune lifted Shogetsu out of her lap and set him in the hall. He shut the door firmly and turned his attention to his lass. “You’re all mine now.”
She laughed and set her embroidery to the side. “You really were jealous of the cat!”
“Maybe,” he admitted a little gruffly, his playful demeanor falling away for a moment.
“Come here, tiger boy. I’ll make you purr.” She giggled and patted her lap.
Masamune grinned. He loved her laughter and her smiles. “Who says I want to purr?” He pounced on her, lowering her back to the floor to pin her beneath him. “Maybe I’ll just eat you up,” he told her as he nuzzled her neck.
She kissed his cheek. “Who says we can’t do both? Hm?”
He nipped at her ear. “At the same time even.” Masamune’s hand went to the ribbon securing the silly ‘tiger’ ears on his head but she stopped him.
“No, no. Keep those on. You’re adorable in this disguise.” Her fingers combed through his hair and lightly over the fabric cat ears.
Masamune felt his cheeks heat. “If you like them . . .” Then he laughed. Only this mad, beautiful woman could make him blush. No matter how many times they made love, she was always new and wonderful in his eyes.
“Maybe I need a pair too?” She made a happy sound as he kissed down to the hollow of her throat, his fingers busily undoing her kimono.
“Maybe you do,” he agreed. “My naughty kitten.”
“My wicked one-eyed tiger.”
“Just for tonight,” he grinned.

Puff Clover:
Anyone with a small fruit and veggie garden will have Puff Clover. It adds extra nutrients to the soil to help plant growth and helps retain water.
Because my region of Black Spine has mild winters and dry summers, agriculture is mainly focused on citrus fruits, seeds and nuts and irrigation is a challenge. Puff Clover is one of many solutions to keep things healthy.
Puff Clover is a hardy plant that can withstand a lot, such as yours truly laying in a big path of it and gazing at the clouds. It feels cool and it's soft with these adorable little puff flowers scattered about.
Puff Blossoms are small and smell like fresh laundry.
Puff Clover is also home to the Puff Beetle. These adorable little buggers are also a benefit to one's garden as they can eat other more harmful bugs like aphids.
NOTE: Always practice plant rotation. The clover helps but you still need to rotate your plants to ensure healthy soil.

A weekend in a solarpunk future
Today was quite the busy day- and it was spent almost entirely outdoors.
This morning was the monthly 'get to know the plants around you' meetup. The idea behind this group is that 3 people (This time it was me, A., and C.) who are very familiar with the native plants around here and their uses, as well as the invasive species around here and their uses, lead a group through one of the local parks, and we teach the new comers what we know. We get a lot of people who have just moved to town and aren't yet familiar with the local ecosystems, those who didn't grow up foraging or working with plants, and of course some retirees who are looking to connect with nature in a way that they couldn't during their working lives back in the 2010s and 2020s.
We started by going over plants that get confused by beginners a lot (western bleeding heart vs herb robert, mahonia vs holly, that sort of thing), then moved on to the most common and vigorous native plants, and how each of us uses them in our lives (stinging nettle for tea, pesto, soup, the fiber for cloth, etc). We finish out the meetup by identifying the most... shall we say, vigorous of the invasive plants, and how to safely remove them (I mean, some have sap that can hurt you, so it's good to point those ones out). Some make tasty food, but we discussed how to safely compost the rest of them.
Gotta be honest, turning a problem (invasive species) into a resource (fertilizer) fills me with a sense of satisfaction like no other. C. usually takes the ones that are good for making fertilizer (invasive buttercup, bindweed, Hyacinthoidess, etc); I'll take the English Ivy and Himalayan blackberries home because my pet goats love to eat them. They also love bindweed, but I can share.
Anyway, we show the new folks how to identify and remove them, and then we put their new skills to the test. It's really starting to make a noticeable effect in the areas we visit, and I have to hope that every one we teach keeps practicing on their own.
Of course, removing the invasive species is only one part of the solution, but that's a whole different post.
This afternoon was a work party at the community/foodbank garden, which is always a good time and opportunity to connect with others. Back in the day I would've been confused by what a "community/foodbank" garden was, but honestly, it works. People who can, come and work in the garden and take what they will use for the next week. People who aren't able to donate their physical skills come by the food bank and are able to get the food they'll use in a week. It used to be that people thought there would be too many "takers" and not enough "workers", but it turns out that working in large groups, in close connection with the land, knowing that you're helping not only yourself but others in your community is hugely motivating for a large segment of the population. It's also awesome because the people who run the garden are super passionate about sustainable gardening and figuring out how to make gardening accessible to everyone in the community who wants to, so people feel comfortable coming to learn and then taking the knowledge and skills back to their neighborhood hub/commons gardens. Really, in the past ten years, the number of people who have started incorporating native plants, started mulching, stopped pulling out plants that support native insects, built rainwater and grey water irrigation systems and so on has really blossomed. The city is so much greener (and cooler) than it used to be, both metaphorically and literally.
Speaking of greywater, that's tomorrow's project. This evening is for listening to the chorus frogs and relaxing on the back porch.

Farming and Sustainability
In this blog, I will be discussing farming and sustainability and how they connect.
We talk a lot about sustainability in certain areas.. today it is about farming. What does sustainable farming look like? Sustainable farming can be building healthy soil, preventing erosion, promoting biodiversity, and managing water wisely to name a few (Union of Concerned Scientists). A huge part of being able to achieve this is by working with nature rather than against it. When soil is empty because of off-season crops, planting cover crops can prevent soil erosion and replenish soil nutrients. Minimizing the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers to stop the poisoning of fresh water sources, marine ecosystems, air, and soil. These methods are ways that sustainability can be incorporated into farming. A huge key idea in working with nature is by promoting biodiversity. Instead of growing crops in one huge space that is dedicated to one specific crop, growing a mix of crops, like in nature, will aid with soil health and pest control.
I've named a few ways as to how to make farming more sustainable.. but what was the problem in the first place? The Earth's population continues to rise and is expected to be over 10 billion by 2050, and these 10 billion people need to have food. Currently, with 7 billion people on the planet, agriculture takes up 50% of land and 69% of freshwater (World Wild Life). While the easiest answer would be to just use more land, that solution isn't as easy as it sounds. Agricultural expansion has had consequences and will continue to do so if we cannot sustainably manage our resources. Some of these consequences are deforestation that leads to wildlife loss, pollution, and climate change.
To put things in perspective: A few statistics that really show how today's current food production is sustainable are provided by World Wild Life.
Currently, it takes 1 LITER of water to produce ONE CALORIE of food. To produce 2 pounds of rice, it takes 340 GALLONS of water. The amount that we use today to produce food is undeniably unsustainable and these changes need to happen soon.
Now that we know how today's food industry is unsustainable, what can WE do to be able to contribute? Some ways that we can help have to be achievable by ourselves and not rely on anything else. So, a way that we can contribute is to support organic farmers and their produce. To the group of people who CAN afford to purchase organic food, this support to organic farms can aid in the spread of the produce made by these organic farms. Another method which can be applied to the people who have the time and funds to do this, is the implementation of permaculture. Permaculture is essentially to do our best to take care of our own needs, like feeding ourselves (Tenth Acre Farm). Being able to have homegrown food, and caring for ourselves is what makes life abundant. Even collecting rainwater for the home garden can be considered sustainable. Catching rainwater will reduce the need to irrigate and improve the health of the soil at the same time. To the people who have the time and effort to invest into methods such as permaculture, I recommend doing it. Not only will you be able to help the planet Earth, but you know where your own food is coming from without the hazardous pesticides and fertilizers.

Riza links their fingers. They're hunched over the small sitting table in the corner of their living/dining/...kitchen area.
What time is it? The sky has grown darker earlier with each day of autumn that progresses. It adds an illusion of more hours in the day, especially when they're in the office late into the night. Papers stacked high, ideas flung back and forth as they encounter problems or try to plan ahead...
The energy doesn't stop when they return to their tiny home. The desert garden has been a labor of love, sweat, and the enhancement of Easy's freckles as she works in the sun - both a thing they have in common. She's been talking for quite a while this evening on some experiments she wants to try. If they work, maybe she can implement that with some of the practices of the people here, and work with them to see if they want to incorporate it as part of the rebuilding.
Her chin rests in her palm. Easy's eyes are far away as she pictures the layouts in her mind, the solutions for irrigation issues, hurdles of getting supplies out before they can reestablish a cycle to not have complete dependence on the bigger countries around. Down she goes along towards another idea. The little 'oh' as a new thought flickers in the shine of her eyes prompts Riza's lips to curl.
God. She sighs, gaze dropping to freckles cheeks and full lips. This was the first time where she felt completely enamored with the woman before her. She knew a lot of passionate people, but Easy was another manifestation of it. Roy and Edward had unparalleled drives, unrelenting motivation to see goals to the end. Easy was passionate in such a way that energized the room around them in a way she'd never seen. She could only predict the warm reception to these being proposed tomorrow.
Easy trails off for a moment, and Riza closes the narrow distance to catch full lips. Hands cup her cheeks, angling her chin just so she can kiss her thoroughly and completely. It seemed fitting in such a flurry of ideas, innovation, and pure light in her eyes as the candles burned low and threatened to burn out behind them.
Truth be told, this opportunity was everything the youngest Cromwell had ever longed for— a perfect culmination of compassion, dedication, and healing which were quintessential to her core.
There’d been a moment at crossroads when the fallout settled, presented with a number of opportunities and a far-more-opened future than most of Amestrian military personnel might have ever imagined; an embassy being established in Drachma, mitigation at the Northern border, and reparations at the edge of Aerugo in light of the dwindling border war. All fine options, and all eager to have a high-ranked alchemist in their retinue.
But when Roy and Riza extended an invitation to have Easy join their efforts in rebuilding Ishval– the start of a long, hard process of atonement, of undoing some of the destruction they’d played such a prominent role in– all other options might as well have disappeared. Not only for the chance to be a part of amends so necessary, but to support her dearest ones as they confronted the worst of their past; to lend them strength as they struggled to prove to themselves, more than anyone, that they could be better. That they were better.
It’s one reason she was so happy to share the humble home she did with Riza… but only one of many; not all of them so pious or selfless in the least.
There was no denying how much pleasure Easy found every day in coming home to her. As much as she’d enjoyed the privacy, the independence she’d experienced when she first left Wiradu, (something never quite afforded in a big family home), the Earthshaker fast discovered that solitude did not become her. Hence how she’d done everything in her power over the years to fill it with guests, whether they stayed for dinner or for several weeks, just the same.
Here and now? The hours spent in labor are never lonely. Quiet may slip into moments, but there’s always the soft ambience, the tender presence of someone she loves. So thoroughly, so deeply. And gods, is it good. To look over and see her; to have that patient, listening ear as she explores her thoughts aloud, excitedly getting lost on tangents as the theoretical breadth of their work expands, but she delights in every moment of it– each new complexity its own puzzle she’s too happy to have a hand in solving.
She trails off for a moment; wandering with a thought, trying to pin down the right words before she goes on— but instead, the trail is lost entirely; stolen abruptly off-path by the gentle pressure of lips on her own, and even further as that gentleness gives way.
Yet another of those many reasons: Easy could count on one hand the number of people in her life who had ever kissed her with such meaning; like the other woman was trying to put the whole of herself into it, conveying with touch that which words failed to. Someone who held her so, and in whose hands she felt utterly, completely safe.
All her life had been building to this present. The study, the working, the waiting; finally realized, in the dimming candlelight and cooling breeze as night moved in on the desert, with a full day of work eager to move in with the next sunrise. A beautiful promise of fulfillment, but only in due time; because between then and now lay the sweet embrace of night, and that of her beloved with it. The love whose one hand Easy covers with her own, while the other lifts to loosely frame the curve where Riza’s jaw slopes down into her neck; a lighter touch only in the physical sense, as it bears every ounce of her heart, just the same.

Venezuela's rural, remote, indigenous communities have been particularly affected by COVID-19 and the country's socio-economic crisis; community gardens help Wayúu women from Rio Negro to make ends meet, and provide a haven from violence.
Venezuela has suffered a widespread decline in public services, such as electricity, domestic gas supplies, and public transportation in recent years.
This crisis has driven some members of the indigenous communities on Venezuela's western border with Colombia, including Río Negro, to make frequent border crossings to purchase basic goods, including food items. When their relative or partners leave on these essential trips, the women of the Wayúu indigenous community have found themselves vulnerable to gender-based violence.
Community gardens could be an answer to the problems of self-sufficiency, and safety. A garden created by a local women's network, Jieyúú Kojutsuu ("Women of Value") is supporting local women and their families, and helping them to meet their subsistence needs.
There are currently twenty-six members of the community working together to grow corn, tomatoes, bell peppers, celery, black beans, cantaloupe, and other vegetables and fruits in Río Negro.
They include many of the Wayúu indigenous community's most vulnerable groups, including young people at risk of being recruited by armed groups, unemployed women at risk of gender-based violence, and elderly people who had resorted to begging and heavy work to survive.
"Can you imagine? There are more women than men working in the garden!”, says Guillermina Torres, one of the members. “We are going to harvest our own food without having to depend on our husbands' income. And the young people who used to hang around in the streets have also joined this project".
"Traditionally, agriculture was one of the main livelihoods in the region. Elderly people have been able to integrate themselves and share ancestral knowledge with younger members of the community,” says Diego Moreno, a UN refugee agency (UNHCR) Protection Assistant in Maracaibo, who has been monitoring this initiative.
“Women who were most at risk of gender-based violence while their relatives or partners undertook back-and-forth trips to Colombia now have a safe space where they gather every day to grow food that will later benefit their families”, he adds.
Sustainable solutions
With limited financial resources, the Wayúu indigenous community had to think of new innovative and sustainable ways to grow their crops. A positive side-effect has been a move towards sustainable agriculture, which is less harmful to the soil.
To support these efforts, UNHCR has donated agricultural tools, seeds, water tanks, and solar streetlights, helping to ensure that the community has a clean and sustainable source of energy and water irrigation.
In addition, the UN migration agency (IOM) has trained local families to make organic fertilizers and natural insect repellents, using ingredients—including animal waste—that are easily found in the community.
"We don't have spend money buying chemicals that can also affect our crops and the environment. Instead, we learned to make our own 100 per cent natural fertilizers and repellents with ingredients we can find right here in our community", says Ms. Torres.
"The replacement of chemical fertilizers with organic fertilizers and of agro-toxins with natural insecticides made of neem leaves, tobacco leaves, and vegetable ash, as well as the creation of seed banks, guarantees a sustainable and eco-efficient way of life, as well as a healthier diet for the families and the community as a whole," explains Wolfgan Rangel, IOM's Productive Projects Monitoring Officer in Maracaibo.
Hundreds of gardens supported
In total, more than 660 community garden projects have been supported in the states of Zulia, Táchira, and Barinas.
Both UNHCR and IOM have donated the necessary tools and resources to support communities through the development of sustainable small farming initiatives. In some of these communities, local markets have also been created to sell vegetables, helping generate alternative sources of income.
Given the remote location of the communities and the lack of public transportation, it is vital that the community garden projects continue to be scaled up. This way, more indigenous families will be able to take part in these subsistence farming initiatives and stop relying on trips to neighbouring countries to buy food.
