"France became the first country in the world to make abortion a constitutional right Monday [March 4, 2024], with French lawmakers adopting the bill in a 780-72 vote in a move inspired by the U.S. reversal of Roe vs. Wade.
The law gives women a "guaranteed freedom" to choose for themselves if an abortion is the right choice to make.
The amendment won the support of the three-fifths of the 925 National Assembly and Senate members required to pass in an extraordinary afternoon session at the Palace of Versailles just outside Paris in a move that was overwhelmingly supported by the public.
Prime Minister Gabriel Attal said to those assembled in Congress Hall that "we owe a moral debt" to the women who had to suffer through illegal abortions in the past.
After the vote to approve the constitutional change, Paris' Eiffel Tower was lit with the words in French "my body my choice" in the country where abortion was first legalized in 1975, two years after the United States' first ruling on Roe vs. Wade...
While limiting abortion ranked very low on France's political agenda, lawmakers were prompted to take action to protect abortion rights in 2022 following the U.S. Supreme Court's overturning of the 1973 Roe ruling that legalized abortion. Subsequently, several American states have passed laws to restrict or outlaw the procedure.
"I say to all women within our borders and beyond, that today, the era of a world of hope begins," said Attal, who at 34 became the country's youngest prime minister.
This was the first time since 2008 that France took steps to change its constitution. There will be a ceremony to finalize the amendment on Friday [March 8, 2024], which is also International Women's Day."

Note: It may be the first, but I am confident that it will not be the last!
listen it's like. cleopatra had gifts put aside for octavia. and livia, but that's not as interesting to me. there's an implication, and outline, of some kind of relationship, and that not all hope was lost there. yet.
Octavia Minor and the Transition from Republic to Empire, Katrina Moore
however. octavia is made of the same cloth as her brother. octavian said roman dominance: be consumed or get buried, and octavia took that directive in her hands and open mouth kissed it with tongue. mark antony never stood a chance, but this isn't about him. he was already buried, kleopatra stayed a moment longer, and octavia outlived them both. it's checkmate or nothing, baby!
Hey here's an angle on the Jiang family dynamic and its impact on Wei Wuxian that I haven't seen discussed:
Wei Wuxian grew up seeing Jiang Yanli routinely having her agency cut off and denied in both large (betrothal) and small ways. That were largely tied up in her gender, sure, but this was also a family containing Yu Ziyuan. A daughter in this household had every chance of having her gender treated as of secondary importance.
She just had to earn it.
The way Jiang Yanli was hemmed in and her potential as an independent actor dismissed was at least as strongly correlated with her failure to be a powerful sword cultivator.
So Wei Wuxian's total refusal to let anyone know that he'd lost access to his cultivation and his violent reactivity against being diminished or condescended to during his Sunshot-to-death period, when before he was pretty immune to being looked down on, could have a lot to do with having been presented with this clearly labeled diagram of how your personhood gets stripped away when you are, by the standards of your society, disabled.
Phil: What I find really funny about it is that like, the QSMP logo for some reason– like, the little- this thing, this thing, they class as an Egg for some reason on the website, which- which—
Phil: Now I'm a little bit concerned about because on the server, I have one of these in the game. I have one of these in the game. So does that mean I have three Eggs now? Have I accidentally adopted another Egg?
Phil: I need help!
Phil realizes he might be a single dad of not two, but three Eggs because of a technicality on the QSMP.Shop website.
Summary: With heavy steps, Wei Ying walks back to the living room and plops down on the sofa again. His silver eyes travel around the room for a while, mind flooded by memories of sunny mornings, meals and cosy evenings together and all the surfaces they fucked each other on. Then they stop at the door of Lan Zhan's study.
If he walked out right now...
If Lan Zhan walked out right now and spoke to him, Wei Ying would throw the backpack away, hold his boyfriend close and never let him go.
He begs. He begs it would happen. He begs Lan Zhan to somehow feel how much on the edge Wei Ying is balancing right now.
"Please," he whispers - the tightening feeling in his throat is slowly choking him while the silver eyes threaten to fill with tears. "Please, Lan Zhan."
Kay's comments: AKA the story that made me cry on public transit. Absolutely loved it though. A Wangxian break-up and make-up story and often those tend to bash Wei Wuxian or force him to do all the emotional labour, but this one doesn't. Instead, it's Lan Wangji who has to work on himself and start fighting for them. The worst person in this entire story is actually Lan Xichen, so if you like him... Maybe skip out on this one. Really loved the relationship development here, Wei Wuxian putting himself first for the first time and Wangxian finding their way back towards each other and that not magically fixing everything.
Excerpt: He places the plate on the table and sits down on the edge, right next to Lan Zhan.
"Sweetheart, you need to stop this," he finally says.
"Stop what?" Lan Zhan asks, eyes never leaving the screen.
"Working so much," Wei Ying points out. "You're hurting yourself. Why can't Huan-ge help you with this?"
Lan Zhan exhales in frustration. "Because Huan-ge was the one who screwed this up in the first place."
"You cannot fix the whole company by yourself."
"I can try."
"Lan Zhan," Wei Ying shakes his head and raises his hand to caress Lan Zhan's cheek.
But the other man grabs his wrist, the golden eyes darting up, filled with sudden anger. His grip is so strong Wei Ying feels like his wrist will break in half.
"I need to do this, Wei Ying," he says through gritted teeth. "You don't understand. The whole company depends on me. People depend on me."
pov wei wuxian, pov lan wangji, modern setting, modern no powers, established relationship, breaking up & making up, lan wangji has issues, lan xichen bashing, getting back together, developing relationship, angst with a happy ending, therapy, hurt/comfort, emotional hurt/comfort, good friend wen qing
