Adoro | hre x italy
I figured you all could use some more of my HRE and Italy drabbles because I think fondly of them. So have this drabble that I haven’t posted anywhere else. It’s just about Arnfried and people’s reactions to his relationship with Feliciano.
Feliciano Bernardi was a selfish, spoiled, brat.
His clothing glittered from the fine thread and intricate patterns. The jewels on his fingers like stars from the night sky. His eyes shining and his smile delightful - any stranger assumed him to be sweet and gentle.
But the reality is that his judgmental eye was as heavy as the clothes he wore. His steps struck fear like a dragging note. Feliciano was as pretty as he was terrifying and everyone knew this to be true.
“He’s taken fondly of you?”
The surprise that filled the room every time Arnfried spoke of their meetings never seemed to dull. They came in hushed whispers, loud gasps, and laughs from people who assumed he was being sarcastic.
But the shock that came when he confirmed that he and Feliciano were friends always came after. It never failed to appear on faces. Even more, it turned to almost horror when Feliciano graces these events with his presence and ran to greet his friend.
The sight of this man so full of himself giving Arnfried kisses on the cheek and begging him to dance with him made even the devil turn.
Feliciano was oblivious for once.
He did not capture the way the tenderness in his eyes turned heads. Nor did he realize how odd it was to those who knew him that he was spending his days preparing sweets for his Arnfried.
His Arnfried!
He called him that with all the adoration in the world and meant it. He was in fact, his Arnfried. Not because he owned Arnfried but because Arnfried owned him. His heart, his passions, the sweetness in his voice were reserved for the company of one person alone.
His Arnfried is who he was and Feliciano enjoyed every moment they spent under the sun.
He did not catch the laughs that sparked up at the implication that he softened.
Each day that he spent plucking the sweetest strawberries, preparing fine tea, and baking sweets he only ever made for himself shook all of Venice to its core.
Only a fool could miss the stolen glances and visits. The tender touches and meals. The way that Veneziano played music only for Arnfried to hear. The way that those tense shoulders loosened when he was hand in hand with his “friend”, dancing under the moonlight.
“How ever did you tame the beast?” asked many and there was never really an answer to it. Was he really tamed at all? Or was it that he was finally seen?
A man who had passions, who was silly, who liked to play in the fields. Beyond nation duties he was energetic, creative. He liked to paint birds.
He was not tamed - and Arnfried would know that well. He still lashed out, cried, screamed when frustrated. He was still spoiled and pompous. He was painfully close minded. And he disappeared when life grew difficult for days at a time.
No, Arnfried had not tamed anyone - especially not Feliciano. Their prince was simply happy and experiencing humanity for the first time.

i am also a firm 'chibitalia shouldnt exist' believer! ig the purpose of them is just cuteness factor but... they are just uncanny to me. why are they blobs the size of newborns, talking and walking like 10 yr olds and acting like 4 yr olds? and what was the weird ass thing of having feli dressed up and mistaken for a girl for? honestly think that the feli x hre thing would've been so much more impactful if they were just their normal ages. Also feli and roderich's relationship couldve been way more interesting, like alfred and arthurs. but since he was just the chibi thing its like yea i kinda see why roderich treated him like a pet, that blob does not resemble a person :/
I dropkick both chibitalia and chibiromano they are one of the things I hate the most in this anime because ughhh wasted potential!!
I put the cute Italian kiddos before Rome's death and a little bit after, but like...why are they still kids during the seventeenth century?? they should be already grown adults!! not to mention they have a shit ton of history and culture behind them😭
I guess hima added them only for cuteness factors. Although I make Feli and HRE's relationship much more serious and tragic in my canon since I age them up to young adults. And you're right! I would've loved to see Austria-North Italy relationship IF ONLY hima didn't give us stupid blobs as the italies.
mhhh, I probably should make a post about historical AusIta...

🥀"𝒯𝒶𝓀𝑒 𝒸𝒶𝓇𝑒 𝑜𝒻 𝐼𝓉𝒶𝓁𝓎 𝒻𝑜𝓇 𝓂𝑒... 𝒪𝓀𝒶𝓎...?"🥀
Explanation and textless ver under cut:
After the whole "HRE is Germany's brother not him" thing I was imagining there was like, a moment between life and death where the two met, and HRE made Germany promise to him that he'll take care of Italy and love him just as he did. This isn't the exact moment, since both of them are adults, but most likely him reminding Ludwig of his promise.
Version with no text:

All My Love, Feliciano Bernardi | Letter One
Read on AO3
Description: Letters from Venice to Holy Rome. Love, rejection, friendship, and more are all contained in the letters kept away carefully by Feliciano. Now, the public can get a look at them.
In this letter, we observe Feliciano rejecting Arnfried while also subtly declaring his love for him
My Dearest Arnfried,
I treasure every letter that is sent my way with your detailed accounts of the ever-evolving world around us. Your words make it so that I have traveled to where you are and stand next to you as the sun rises and falls.
It warms my soul to know how fond you are of our talks - for I hold them dear too. They are the very air I breathe in these trying and shifting times. As you know from my previous letters, my brothers and my sisters have become abrasive with me.
I cannot for the life of me figure out what it is that I did which hardened them to me so. Alas, I shall simply have to keep walking the path of life and pray that God’s grace builds a bridge for us to meet once more.
But my friend, I must say, I was most startled by the passion which you professed. I have known of your affections and have heard your heart beat, but I cannot give you the flame that you seek in me.
You are treasured to me like the finest of wines. I look to you and your guidance like a sailor to the skies. I truly believe, in the deepest parts of my soul, that we were created from the same clay and for that we are forever bound in such a deeply emotional manner.
However, I must confess, that I can never light the flame inside of myself which you burn for me. My heart exists in thousands of fragmented pieces - like the glass of the basilica - and they have been carried by the winds to lie hidden along each of the Mediterranean shores - forever lost to the world. In truth, I fear, my beloved, that if I bore to you what lays in the crevice where my heart once was held, that all I would find to offer you would be nothing more than sand.
It is for these reasons that I cannot return your affections and I must once more ask, that our love stay brotherly as it has been and that we seek not to test blind Cupid.
All my love,
Feliciano Bernardi

This is so heartbreaking! I just realized that Gerita will never be canon because Italy is waiting for the HRE to comeback as he promised.
