Jaime and Cersei’s romanticized idea of being one soul in two bodies is so fascinatingly destructive. So much of their relationship is based on this notion of fundamentally refusing to accept the other as a whole. Both of them want to shove the other inside of a box of their creation that is kind of antithetical to them as people. Cersei does use Jaime and her children as extensions of herself to achieve things that society keeps from her grasp due to her gender. She locks Jaime inside this box where he functions as her sword, essentially. Then, the whole point of Jaime’s arc in ASoS is to establish that he is more than a sword, more than rituals of violence. To me, Jaime’s obsession with Cersei continuing past their childhood mainly stems from a tight clinging to the past. Following Jaime’s trauma, disillusionment, and increasing isolation due to his experience with Aerys, knighthood, and moral constructs, he views the relationship as the only concrete thing in his life and relies on it for affirmation and meaning. He also uses Cersei as a means of dissociation— filling his head with thoughts of her during the executions, “losing himself in her flesh”, hoping to prevent his nightmares through dreams of her— a way “to go away inside”. He also unconsciously never wants to move on from being that blissfully ignorant romantic boy that he was, so he desperately keeps the one thing that is constant (his twin sister - a constant from birth), and romanticizes a relationship that is not what he believes it is. He projects her onto a pedestal and obsesses over an ideal that does not exist, also putting her into the role of a perfect woman (“I thought she was The Maiden”), to turn the relationship into something pure that he can guard and revolve his life around. He puts himself in the position of a knightly protector figure to cope with his own identity crisis and the destruction of his self concept. He needs her in order to feel needed. They need each other for self-love. But, both of them also dehumanize the other in different ways, and to different extents. “You are my other half” is a twisted notion that prevents the autonomy and individualization of both parties. It treats the other as a half and not a whole. Not to mention the possible consent & communication issues it brings. “I am not whole without you.” You are, and should be. Truly dynamic of all time.

in cersei and jamie‘s relationship, youd think that jamie would have all the power because he can physically dominate cersei and he does in the books but the one who has the most power in this relationship is cersei. she is able to manipulate jamie and make jamie do her bidding. like he could’ve been lord of casterly rock. he was the heir and he would’ve had a beautiful wife and had children and had the title and had the ranking but cersei told him “no you’re going to be a knight of the kingsguard so we can always be close to each other.” jamie gave up his whole life for cersei jamie gave up having a wife having a child having his own free will for cersei and jamie is so blinded by cersei’s “love” if that’s what you want to call it that he just looked past all of her terrible qualities and then when he meets Brianne and sees this woman who is really perfect in every way, but not like beautiful and is still so kind even though people are cruel to her. he changes his perspective on how someone should love you and how someone should act towards you, and when he comes back to kingslanding, after being with Brianne, he sees cersei’s flaws. when she burns down the hand of the kings tower and he sees the madness in her eyes and sees all the awful things she does and then when he leaves to riverrun to go take it from the blackfish and she sends the letter he’s so over it. he’s so over this shit she pulls and the way she treats people the way she treats him he can’t take it anymore.
also jaime says cersei is the only women he’s ever been with. jaime is this beautiful highborn knight with golden curls and a killer smile, he had girls drooling over him all the time but never even looked their way. then he meets brienne who he is forced to be in close proximity with and that is the first time he has ever had an interaction like that with a women that wasn’t cersei, that we know of but i feel like if he did it would’ve been mentioned.

Okay but imagine Cersei's son, who is older than Joffrey. A product of Cersei and Jaime's affairs. He takes the throne after Robert Baratheon dies. He knows exactly who his father is. He knows he is not the rightful heir, but he strongly desires the throne. He is more proud to be a full Lannister than to be known as the King's son. Cersei's favorite child.
Imagine him having a scary aura. He is worse than Joffrey but more smart and cunning. Definitely has no problem being in the front line of the battle. Imagine Stark!reader imprisoned by him. He has no intention of letting her go. Imagine a whole harem of whores and noble ladies to fulfill his desires and fantasies.

Jaime didn't feel the connection with his children unlike Cersei. His reaction on Joffery's death is really weird. Not only that he mocked Joffery death while having sex with Cersei near his body.
I wrote a post about that whole mess a while back, which basically sums it all up as "Jaime projects the loss of their mother onto Cersei and views his own children as competition".
He can't be a father unless he finally chooses to grow up and stops blaming other people for his own choices. Including Cersei.
Over and again he keeps comparing himself to or projecting himself onto teenagers: Loras, Peck, Lancel - and yes, Brienne as well. He is stuck in the past, a perpetual adolescence, because he remains stuck in the trauma of growing up as Tywin's child (same as Cersei and Tyrion) and the trauma of the Rebellion that made him a kingslayer at age 17. In this regard, he is no different than Ned or Robert or others, who also never quite learned how to move past the violent end to their youth and the losses they had to bear. It informs how these people act as parents - if they do at all.
We see him try and start to take on an adult, parental role with Tommen. But it barely moves anywhere and it exhausts itself in telling Tommen to pretend away a disturbing fact, and before long he is on the road, stuttering and failing to reinvent himself as "Goldenhand the Just", enforcer of Tywin's legacy, denouncing Cersei like he washed his hands of Joffrey.
But that weak small beginning with Tommen seems, to me, to be the true path forward with him. It's the only original thing Jaime can do as a character: actually see Cersei with compassion and take responsibility for his own choices for once, including the children he chose to father.
And now he's dead. He pictured Joff lying still and cold with a face black from poison, and still felt nothing. Perhaps he was the monster they claimed. If the Father Above came down to offer him back his son or his hand, Jaime knew which he would choose. He had a second son, after all, and seed enough for many more. If Cersei wants another child I'll give her one . . . and this time I'll hold him, and the Others take those who do not like it. Robert was rotting in his grave, and Jaime was sick of lies. (ASOS, Jaime VII)
Jaime will have to choose and it won't involve starting from scratch. Only his own self-created messes and being actually honest with himself for once.
