Time to make some proper profiles for the ygo ocs! So, we'll start off with Kat!

Name: Katherine Grace Mercer. Nicknames: Kat, Kit-Kat, Kitty-Kat, Kitty Girl (by Max), Kitty (by Cecelia), Katie (by Wes and Mason), Katiedid (by Mason). Aliases: Kat Pegasus. Nationality: American. Birthplace: Creightonsville, Tennessee. Age: 16-17 years old. Birthday: May 9th. Gender: Cis female; she/her pronouns. Sexuality: Pansexual. Occupation: Professional Duelist, Domino High Student (after moving to Domino), Vice President of Industrial Illusions. Ideal V.A,: Megan Hilty.

Hair Color: Brown. Hair Style: Long, mid back length, very floofy and with tons of volume, very thick. Has some natural wave to it. Bangs part at the center and frame her face. Eye Color: Green. Skintone: Fair, with warm undertones. Height: 5'6". Build: More of a triangular body shape with lean muscle in her arms and legs. Notable Features: Splatter of freckles across her cheeks, nose, shoulders, arms and chest; nostril piercing on her right nostril and pierced ears; small scar on the side of her head from an incident when she was a child (her hair for the most part now covers it up and she uses the ribbon in her hair to help). Backstory:

Born to an Olympic Equestrian and an actress.

Her older sister was diagnosed with her illness when Kat was about 3.

Grew up trying to keep her sisters spirits high and the two having this beautiful and inseparable bond with each other, especially in the face of their parents marriage troubles they did their best to keep from the girls, and their mothers narcissitic and controlling tendencies.

Grew up with her cousins whenever they got to visit and was especially close to her cousin, Sonia, they were best friends.

Played a very early, early prototype to Duel Monsters, before it was ever Duel Monsters, in the hospital rooms her sister frequented.

Lost a lot of her family within a year of each other; the Harmonia sinking, then Mason passing away in a car accident, then Cecelia and then Evangeline. Would be adopted by her godparents, who the will dictated were to take her in the event anything happened to her parents; the agreement was decided as the best move by both them, Maximillion and Wes.

Moved to San Francisco with her godparents, Maddox, her nieces and Max when Industrial Illusions properly started up.

Got to beta test Duel Monsters for her big brother and competed and won in the very first tournament.

Continued the tournament circuit, making time for her family as much as she could.

Met Kaiba at a tournament and they quickly became dedicated rivals and her goal has been to beat him some day, as he was the only person she had never beaten before.

Is with Max when he gets the news that Kaiba has been defeated and she's more upset that somebody beat him before she did than anything else; though, there is definitely quite a bit of surprise when she goes to try and figure out who this Yugi kid is and finds he himself has an Item like the one Max has as a fake eye.

Goes to Duelist Kingdom to watch, since she was barred from competing, and begins to uncover more than she could have ever imagined.

History:

Grew up in Creightonsville as the younger of the two sisters.

Dealt with her parents fighting a lot in their marriage, especially as Cecelia got sicker, as well as her mother's distance and neglect towards her, and her never ending screaming matches and put downs of a lot of the other family members.

Experienced a lot of familial loss very early on in her life and repeatedly so -- first with the Gayles (dear family friends, with Jonathan Gayle being her father's best friend), then with her cousins the Knightons along with Max's parents on the Harmonia, then her father, sister, mother and eventually her grandfather as well.

Her Aunt and Uncle got custody of her after Evie's death and raised her.

Her family also would end up desperately fighting the courts to try and get custody of Raphael after he got back from the islands, having to deal with the Allard side of the family and all communication to him being cut off and denied. After he was thrown out, they still did everything they could to find him.

When Max created Industrial Illusions, Kat became the beta tester for the game, along with being named the heir apparent for the company.

Met Seto and Mokuba at a party when they were 12 years old, and developed a little bit of a crush on Seto. This would bloom into years long rivalry after he took over KaibaCorp and could actually get into Dueling, as she could never beat him and it drove her up a wall.

Was recently named Vice President of I2 at the time the fic starts at the age of 16.

My oldest child Katie Kat passed today at the age of 13. I was the first to hold her when she was born and she passed away in my arms in a full circle moment that shook me to the core. She was a sweet girl that loved being pampered and pet, and was one of the most loving animals I’ve ever had in my life. While I am mourning her loss greatly, I’m happier that she’s now free from the pain that was plaguing her. Cancer was ravaging her poor old body and she was scheduled to start chemo soon, but she decided to go out on her own terms like the independent little miss she always was. Good night, sweet girl.

my mom is utterly obsessed with billie eilish and it’s absolutely sending me.

“she’s really good! she’s funny and has a pretty voice!”

this, from the same woman who tells me to lose weight all because i snore (even when i was thin, i snored - i don’t have sleep apnea, though, otherwise this would be a completely different story) and who got on my case for drinking coffee in her car when it was new and then quite literally pissed her pants on the way home from monterey last week.

i’m going to get absolutely murdered for this. but fuck it: if you support billie, don’t call yourself feminist or empowered ever again (looking at you, hayley - disown a song that you called misogynist like three years ago and then perform it live with her, and for what? it makes you hypocritical, makes feminism look empty, and makes billie that much more unlikable in my eye. i love you, hayley, but that turned me right the fuck off. everything about that night was a betrayal). i mean, she quite literally has a song where she talks about being not like other girls for god’s sake. it’s called “overheated”. i read the comments on the youtube video and they’re fucking hilarious, calling it “empowering” and “ballsy” all because she goes on about people making a huge deal over bodies and that it “must be nice to be made of plastic”. no, it’s that line from all about that bass, “won’t be no stick figure or silicone barbie doll” but made condescending and holier-than-thou. you people have obviously never heard of “occam’s razor”, i.e., the simplest response is the correct one.

it actually makes me angry to think about people finding happier than ever an “empowering” break-up song. i was just confused, especially when i saw that she “screams” in that song - really, i was expecting like a 30 seconds to mars kind of thing, where it builds until jared leto lets out this sudden, loud, unrestrained shriek, or (better yet) dinosaur jr.’s song “don’t”, which is basically just lou barlow screaming his lungs out for 10 minutes.

i feel absolutely manipulated by this little twat and the fact everyone goes ape shit over her is beyond insulting. the beatles weren’t perfect - far from it - but i still love them, though. they’re probably my favorite band now that i’ve hung it up with soundgarden. beatles fans are everywhere now. everyone knows who they are.

no, dave. she did not start a revolution. i get why you might think that, given everyone is doing vocal fry and singing softly and the latest fashion right now consists of clothes two sizes too big and hideous colors. but this is all purely delusional, though.

really, wake the fuck up. she is quite literally the girl you would’ve found on tumblr in 2014 (especially since eilish is her middle name; reminds me of when every girl was going by their first and middle names, myself included) and if you saw her, you’d run the other way. but instead, you all turned her into something mega-popular because... i don’t know. trying to look feminist or woke or some shit.

todd in the shadows over on youtube talks about this theory that he’s had for a while where you have two kinds of pop stars: you have the ones who are infused with that star power and control that they’ll always have that core fanbase to support them once the hype all dies down, and then you have the superstars who get big but then once the bops stop coming, they’re gone. he was talking about katy perry with this theory, with her big fall from grace a few years back and new music from her goes almost unnoticed now, but it makes me curious about billie, though, like... how sustainable all of this is going to be until it all gets tiresome and people are going to be like me and realize that it’s all just a show and that there never was any sincerity there to begin with.

for example: todd talks about having his mentions swarmed by crybaby pop stans from all corners of the internet, except for the “katy kats” and he suspects they never existed. i see the words “billie stans” thrown around... but outside of randos on the internet who follow her because it’s popular and big-name celebs, i could probably count on one hand how many of them i’ve actually seen. singers like miley cyrus, dua lipa, and maybe olivia rodrigo are probably the first kind. i actually really like dua lipa and olivia rodrigo, and even though i tire of seeing miley’s name, i can’t be all that hard on her, though - she was best friends with taylor, after all; her parents are getting divorced, too, something i can totally sympathize with. lana del rey might be another example, given she’s still making good music. it’s not very popular, but much like the other three, she makes her darkness feel substantial (i used to not really care for lana that much, but then i heard lust for life when it came out and i wondered, “huh. maybe there is something here.” and wouldn’t you know, her music is a staple in my library now).

but hearing a song about how you’re not like other girls followed by another one that’s about abuse and how you’re vulnerable, and then proceed to sing with people like hayley and damon albarn (dude, i love you, but shut the fuck up, i don’t need to hear a 17th comment about she writes all her own songs, because no she does not) and then fish for compliments quite literally in the cattiest fashion ever (that on its own just astounded me. backhanded compliments, and thrown at beyonce no less, are not funny, you know that, right?) ...it really makes me wonder about her shelf life.

however. unlike miley, whom of which i’ve returned to sympathy with following taylor’s passing and her parents’ split, i cannot - and will never - feel bad for her once it all goes south, especially after hayley explicitly disowned misery business and then performed it with her the other night. you can’t condemn something as cringe as it goes against your beliefs and then bring it back because her, and you also can’t do something like that and call it “empowering”. like i said, it’s a betrayal. it’s a betrayal to feminism and it’s a betrayal to someone like me who... used to really like these women. i love paramore, they were one of my favorite girl bands growing up, and i was so obsessed with when we all fall asleep when it first came out. but it feels like it’s all just a game now. a game of which girl can score the most with the alternative stuff and who can be *just* the most innovative without turning into imogen heap or bjork (i.e., while still making a shitload of money). but unlike imogen heap or bjork, it’s all hollow, and it all comes off as gross and i feel so insulted.

and worse, i cannot believe that far too many older people, including my own mother, are actually falling for all of this. like, i really feel alone in it.

after she wore that taylor shirt at the grammys, i wrote a skeptical comment on olivia vedder’s instagram that did not go over well. i won’t get into it, but the responses got me thinking, and it really does feel like everyone’s been brainwashed by the whole woke thing and has short-term memory loss to boot: i mean, hayley disowning misery business wasn’t even that long ago. the pandemic has scrambled our brains and sense of time (i forget what day it is all the time), but do you really expect me to forget something like that, especially when being feminist is what we’re all about? outside of dave’s comments and outside of growing up listening to green day, i have never seen billie mention the foo fighters or any other alternative music before, even while going back and reading interviews with her. i mean, it all feels way too good to be true.

it all really just... feels like a lie.

MBS EPISODE EIGHHHHT

weak. I hate to say it but I could feel it in my heart from the start. It had good moments but this episode just didn’t bring it home. I’m going to break this up into my usual notes and then some general evaluation. Notes: What is the deal with curtain and food? He has so many weird scenes with meals.. there’s probably some hidden meaning here but I don’t know what it is And they didn’t get to chuck-root the school :((((( Constance? Wants to pour acid on curtain’s feet Haha I liked Kate’s little “Nyoope” when the recruiters found her Martina redemption and the fighting tetherball team, sure Jackson and Jillson get even more unhinged. they terrify me We got Kate yeeting Constance up the tower, but her bucket had a built in rope motor somehow WE GOT KATIE-KAT but we didn’t get Sorry it took me so long And Milligan’s still moody instead of joyous Go Constance, break the thing, yay Number Two and Rhonda had some real shippy energy in this episode and PLEASE they are SISTERS Two more close profile shots of curtain in this episode, one where he is physically shorter than Milligan but dominating the interaction, and one where he’s physically looking down at Reynie but Reynie’s getting to him. Reynie has a heart to heart and curtain passes out. That’s different. Sticky even said, “it’s anger” and he was like “no, it’s vulnerability” oooooookay then. The whisperer is not an intercom/loudspeaker. sheesh. So the kiddos leave and the twins talk, resolving nothing, then curtain escapes REYNIE AND MISS PERUMAL NO COMPLAINTS HERE *sobs* Kate and Madge at the end <3 Constance refuses adoption!?!?!?!??! And no age reveal obviously rip Sticky’s family redemption he’s going to the totally not made up Boatwright Academy now Mr Benedict is like, I love you all, no snowball fight, the end. SIKE Curtain, SQ, and a totally real engineer lady are on a BOAT. You know, I felt bad for the engineer this whole series, as she is portrayed as kind of doing the technical work hoping it’ll be used for good, while curtain abuses its practical application, but her mood really shifted in that last scene. She was like heheh hey guy that I know is definitely is evil, howabout this mysterious blueprint... are they really trying to set up the sequel. Some tree branches will have to get pretttty bent.

Evaluation: keep reading! (sorry it gets long)

To recap what I’ve said from the start, I think the casting is fantastic but the tone is wrong. The darker, more saturated filter, the isolating camera shots, and very understated music make things colder and stilted. This is a constant throughout the whole series. The book was warm, messy, and full of charm, which I didn’t feel watching the show.

characters were.. compromised? Mr B starts off with a LIE about test winners going to Boatwright Academy. That undermines EVERYTHING he does from then on. “Regrettable but necessary” DOESN’T cut it. He’s also just so anxious and jittery instead of his gentile, kind, strong book self. Just from the show, they didn’t frame his genius very well. He seems more like a fool. Not really confidence-inspiring. In the same way, Being directed to cheat is one thing, but Reynie should NOT have lied to SQ to manipulate him into seeing the forest or whatever. Yeah reynie felt bad about it and SQ called him on it, but this is like the core values of our protagonist team, the strong love for truth. Also, I feel like in the show Reynie’s leadership isn’t highlighted. Like, everyone else has their thing but you almost wonder why he’s framed as the main character. The girls got bonding and the boys got bonding but there was hardly opportunity for him to really bring the team together into a cohesive unit Also, as much as I love Number Two’s life of crime (because it’s funny), she too should have that love of truth, but instead regularly does unlawful things. AND they never explained her eating, and even stopped having yellow clothes :( Additionally, the side story of her and Rhonda’s friction (entertaining I suppose) also really changed the character dynamic. In the book, the adult team was unwavering and wise, a sturdy basis for the perilous missions of the children. But their internal strife, while adding drama, makes them seem unreliable and less absolutely good and trustworthy. And I think trust and integrity are key parts of the book’s solid narrative. Constance’s refusal of the adoption felt wrong too. She was like, “Respectfully decline, but. I’ll stick around here.” I think they were trying to keep going with her contrariness, but it just comes across as foolish pride? Constance is a LITTLE GIRL. She DESERVES a FAMILY. SHE DESERVES A LOVING PARENT (and two wonderful sisters). Yeah family doesn’t have to be by blood OR lawful paperwork, but her actions in this scene really just. cuts off the feels at the knees. We KNOW she’s strong and independent but that doesn’t mean she HAS TO BE or even necessarily WANTS to be all the time. Over the course of the series we see her warming up to people, a kind word here, a little smile there, but this adoption refusal is.. harsh. Then we’ve got Sticky. Yes, he struggles with the comfort of the whisperer. And he overcomes it. BUT in one of the earlier episodes, they had him fighting with the team, defending the whisperer, dismissing his friends... and I count this as betrayal. It may be extreme on my part, but I think he went too far. The Society is the Society. In the book he bested his fears for them and with their support. Yeah he desperately wanted to just give in but he had PRINCIPLES and knew why he couldn’t. His honor, his responsibility to stop curtain, and his loyalty to his friends got him though. But in the show he just dumped them. And then was like, oh oops jk I’m back. (I knowwwwww the book has the privilege of being able to explain characters’ thought processes and emotional states, while shows have to work with more tangible actions and words but stilll I did not Like That) And finally, curtain wasn’t smart. He had hired people doing all the work. He just used it to his ends. Less evil genius and more manipulating creep. But this? I’m more ok with. As an villain, he got the job done. But this makes him less of a foil for Mr Benedict and more of an antagonist, if that makes sense. In the book they never knew each other, but were both alone in the world and greatly smart, and they chose verrry different paths. Whereas in the show he and B were always kind of opposites, warring in motivation and method from the start.

Let’s talk about the boss battle (such as it was). I said it was weak and I meant it. The book is heart pounding. There is so much going on, and so many people in play, the narration jumping all over the place in real time, all culminating in that clash at the top of the tower. Now, the show... the highs weren’t the highs. It felt more like checking off story points. Kate and constance outside - check. Resist the whisperer to stall for time - check. Milligan reveal - check. Reynie starting to figure out narcolepsy triggers - check. Constance shouting then you are the greatest fool of all - um, no, that didn’t happen. Constance defeating the whisperer - check. Curtain escapes - check. We got zero action. No good fights. I know Emmy Deoliveira is a kid and I’m not mad at her for not being able to do action sequences or run with Constance piggyback. But there was almost no physical conflict on-screen, and that’s Kate’s real time to shine. Also they had Number two and Rhonda in the tower ready to fight and then they just didn’t. All this build up for nothing. Furthermore, and I think this is the biggest problem, there was no momentum. Yeah they cut from scene to scene, but the music and tone cut scene-to-scene too. So there was like, dramatic music, Kate’s ready to fight! Get hyped! and then cut to absolutely silent, mr curtain staring at someone. feel mildly disturbed. and then cut to Rhonda and Number two being friends and ready to fight! Aww! And yay! Get hyped! And then cut back to Sticky sitting in a chair, dead silent. It goes on like this. The music, the urgency, should have carried throughout, building in intensity and desperation as the kids come together and curtain unravels more and more and then BAM! curtain down and OH NO! the whisperer and finally Constance’s “I... DON”T.... CARE!!!” and then the madcap escape from the island. Watching, I just couldn’t get swept away. Storywise, they tied it all up and logically it made sense but the emotional culmination just wasn’t there. It was over and done too quick. It fell flat. I didn’t feel the struggle, the suspense. And then they gave us a fabricated Mr B and Curtain conversation that didn’t really help anything. And then the falling action had some nice moments but as I mentioned, the things with constance and sticky kind of made it feel less relieving, joyful, and sweet. I know a snowball fight is elaborate to set and film but I would have loved to see it.

Final thoughts I can’t help but love the kids. I’ll say it again, I sure liked this casting. And for all the changes they had to make, the original central plot was there, and most of the characters were recognizable even with all the alterations. So I did have problems with some of that underlying integrity, as well as the overall tone and execution, but I also laughed at the little funny things, jammed to the title theme, and was excited to see this, my favorite book in the world, get more recognition. I can’t imagine how hard it would be to adapt a work of prose into an audiovisual medium, and considering how outlandish the book sometimes got, they gave it their best shot. I didn’t love it but I can recognize the accomplishment. In terms of faithful and well-made adaptations, on a scale of Percy Jackson to Harry Potter, I’d give The Mysterious Benedict Society a 6.5/10.

From original Riot Grrl to victim of a nervous breakdown, Queen Adreena's Katie Jane Garside has been to Hell and back. Meet Planet Rock's most volatile new star... ACCORDING TO no less an authority than Courtney Love, Katie Jane Garside is one of three figures who single-handedly paved the way for Riot Grrl and it's subsequent snarling offspring - the others being Ms. Love, herself, and Babes in Toyland's Kat Bejelland. The Queen Adreena singer looks bemused at the suggestion but theres a grain of truth in Love's theory. Back in the early '90s Katie Jane was making a big noise as lead singer of grubby guitar-punks Daisy Chainsaw. DC were one of the first bands to successfully mix rock, pop and alternative music, and Katie Jane herself was an explosive mix of raw energy, grating vocals and flailing blonde dreads. But just as they began to hammer on the door of success, Katie had a breakdown of sorts. She shaved her head, quit the band and fled to the Lake District, where she lived "in a small purple house with a wonderful old lady who looked after me and made me better". The choice was, as Katie Jane puts it, to leave the music business or die. And that might've been the end of it, but for a chance meeting with guitarist and fellow Chainsaw refugee Crispin Gray. "Getting back together felt like absolutely the wrong thing to do, but we did it anyway," Katie Jane asserts. "We have a volatile relationship, but there's something that works." AND SO, with the addition of Orson Wajih on bass and Billy Freedom on drums, Queen Adreena was born. The first fruit of their labours was debut single 'Cold Fish'. The lead track wrapped up a haunting vocal around a stuttering barrage of fuzzed up guitar while the B-sides were more darkly atmospheric. Katie Jane recoils in mock horror at the word 'gothic'. "It depends what you mean by 'gothic'," she protests. "I take it to mean romanticism, but it's been turned into dry ice and bats. That's not what we're about." Second single 'X-ing off the days' reaffirms the steely emotional intensity that lies at the core of Queen Adreena's music. It sounds like healthy catharsis, but Katie Jane is not so sure. "It'd be great if I could just scream my song, and when I wake up everything's okay. Life isn't like that - sometimes its screaming your songs that fuels your psychosis. I'm picking up litter in a field of dreams and sticking it in a scrapbook. We're all just winging it. That's what this band's about."

Chapter 12 - Dark Shadow

Warnings: negative thoughts, swearing, implied abuse, homophobic comments, alcohol abuse

Summary: Logan finally has a chance to confront Virgil and the encounter leaves them both shattered.

It felt like Logan had only just closed his eyes when his phone alarm went off. He assumed he had slept through the night, but his mind and body were still exhausted from the emotional release of the evening. In a chain reaction, they all slowly woke and began cleaning the area in an exhausted but calm silence. Roman, Patton and E were the first to head out, leaving Logan and Katie to finish the cleaning and prepare the library for the day.

“Looks like Tate will be a little late this morning,” Katie commented after hanging up her phone. “That old car is giving them trouble again.”

With a sigh, she ran a hand through her oily hair and sat up on the desk.

“Go home, Katie.” Logan offered, placing a hand on the older woman’s shoulder. “I can watch the library until Tate arrives. You’ve done more than enough already.”

The rough sleep on the floor hadn’t served Katie well and she gladly accepted Logan’s offer with a hug before leaving.

Hidden from view, Virgil watched Katie lock the backdoor and waited patiently for her to pull away before going to let himself in. His evening on the street had left him cold to his core and the warmth from inside the library was an immediate relief. Wasting no time, he headed straight to the bathroom to clean up; blissfully ignorant of Logan’s presence at the front of the library. It wasn’t until he came out and found a coffee sitting in the kitchen that Virgil realised he wasn’t alone.

“Katie and I cleaned up this morning, Virgil.” Logan’s voice was calm and pleasant, but it immediately put Virgil on edge. ”I didn’t think you were working today.”

“Just last night.” Keeping his head low, Virgil stepped passed Logan to head to his office. “If nothing is needed, I’ll just grab some things and head out.”

Logan watched cautiously, sensing something off about the other but unsure of the best way to approach. Ben’s message came to mind again as he watched Virgil leave his office with a loaded bag and head toward the back door to leave.

“Did I do something wrong?” Virgil stopped but didn’t turn to face Logan. “I know yesterday didn’t go well but-“

“I told you to let it go, Logan.” The harshness in his voice felt wrong, but Virgil wasn’t going to let Logan get caught up in his mess.

“If something is wrong, you can tell me.” Stepping closer cautiously, Logan noticed Virgil’s shoulders growing tense. “I only want to help-“

“I DON’T WANT YOUR FUCKING HELP!”

Logan quickly stepped away, taken aback by the others sudden anger. “You might not want it, but you clearly need it.”

“Oh, would you take the hint, you fucking moron.” Virgil kept his face hidden by his hood when he turned around, words burning his throat as if each were acid leaving his mouth. “I’m not interested in your fucked up, gay ass. I got my free food, now leave me alone.”

The words stung Logan, but he kept his face neutral and firm; heart breaking as his mind cruelly brought an old fear back to the surface. Once silenced, the dark thoughts re-entered his mind with a vengeance.

“For the record, I am not gay.” It felt like Virgil’s heart stopped at Logan’s words. “I prefer to identify as a Panromantic-asexual. If you are going to insult my sexuality, at least do it properly."

“Whatever,” Virgil turned and headed towards the door again. “Have fun with your dead boyfriend, faggot.”

The air was left sour and heavy with Virgil’s words. Neither man believed the words, but their burn was real enough to have an effect. Virgil carried the last of his belongings away to sell in hopes of spearing everyone from his burden; Logan on the other hand, sat in deathly silence until Tate arrived and mindlessly headed out to get ready for work. The old ghostly fear growing and twisting into a dark shadow, until a soothing voice urged him to return to an old habit.

Nothing but the clothes on his back, Virgil walked the streets with a measly $50 in his pocket. Each step echoed in his ears and he felt disgusted by every breath he took past his cursed lips. Regret and guilt a heavy stone in his gut as Logan’s face and his words echoed in his mind. Staring down at his phone he had the urge to call Logan and tell him everything; his debt and his past, the heavy weight that held him back.

“Virgil Sparks?”

The moment Virgil paused and looked up in response to the voice, he regretted it. The men who climbed out of the black van parked beside him were not comfortingly familiar.

“Get in the van, Virgil.” Ben motioned to Virgil from his position in the back; his expression darkened by bruising to his cheek.

“You said I had till Monday. I haven’t got any-“

“Get in.”

A firm hand gripped Virgil’s forearm and he felt all sense of hope finally fade away before climbing inside. There was no running now. The only way out would be messy no matter which way he looked at it. But then again…it was what he deserved.

Patton was terrified as he ran down the streets towards his home. He had received Katie’s message 5 minutes prior and turned his calming walk into a complete workout.

Kit-Kat: are you okay?

Pit-Pat: fine. Just taking a casual walk home.

Kit-Kat: something has happened. Virgil’s office is completely empty, Logan isn’t answering his phone and his work said he left early to take care of you.

He should have felt bad leaving Katie on ‘read’ but all he could think about was how broken Logan was last night. Even before he had shared Jason's video, he’d seemed more distant than usual, but Patton had been so caught up in his own feelings he hadn’t even registered it until now. Worry gripped his chest like a vice while his feet beat roughly against pavement. Air rushed uncomfortably into his lungs with every breath until he finally reached the doorstep and shoved the key into the lock.

“Logan!”

Patton spotted his roommates bag and shoes roughly discarded in the entry and raced up the stairs; calling again until he reached Logan’s locked bedroom door.

“Logan? Logan, open the door.” He pulled at the door fruitlessly; the silence from the other side feeding his fear with every unresponsive second. “Logie, please, you’re scaring me.”

Hands shaking, Patton eyed the door lock and remembered the same locks on his childhood doors; his mother could always get in when he was sad by using a butterknife to unlock it from the outside. When Logan didn’t respond again, he raced downstairs and decided this was just the situation to invade his privacy.

The knife fell from Patton’s hands the moment the door unlocked and he rushed into the room. Bottles of spirits were discarded and spilling on the floor; the sight alone made Patton’s blood run ice cold. Logan’s glasses were shattered by the wardrobe with what had probably been a full bottle of alcohol. Worried eyes darted around until her spotted his friend crumpled at the far end of the room by his bed; eyes open but unseeing through a blur of tears. Patton was thankful for his shoes as he crunched into the room and cradled Logan’s head between his hands.

“Be honest with me, Logan, how much did you drink?”

Blinking, Logan’s features contorted as his fogged brain processed Patton’s comforting presence and realisation hit like a tidal wave sending sobs through his body again.

“I-I c-nnn-n-t”

“It’s okay. You’re okay, sweetie.” Pulling him close, Patton took in the intense scent of alcohol that he had not dealt with since the first months of Jason’s passing. “I’ve got you now. It’s okay.”

Though Patton would have loved to simply hold Logan, he knew it wasn’t safe to stay in the room as it was. Carefully pulling back, Patton locked Logan’s eyes and kept his tone level and calm.

“It’s not safe here, Logan. Can you stand for me?” With a small nod, Logan carefully rose to his feet with Patton as support. “Okay. There’s lots of glass around so I need you to just stand here while I grab you some shoes. Can you do that?”

Using the wall for support, Logan released Patton so he could retrieve a pair of slippers from the back of the wardrobe. Gingerly slipping them on, Patton guided Logan to the bathroom and sat him on the toilet lid while he went to fetch clean clothes.

When Patton returned, Logan had his face buried in his hands with fresh sobs shaking his shoulders. The déjà vu hit him hard as he felt himself repeating an old routine of helping Logan shower and dress, before shuffling down the hall to set him up in his bed. No one else knew of Logan’s brief struggle with alcohol after Jason. It was a short-lived but intense battle. Night after night of alcohol fuelled sadness and self-loathing was eventually brought under-control thanks to Patton’s support. Sadly, Patton was now reminded that it was a battle they would apparently have to always be aware of. A lingering shadow in their lives that would remain, even after Logan allowed Patton to coax him into an unsteady sleep.

Katie knocked on the door an hour later and Patton carefully shuffled off the bed; thankful that Logan didn’t stir from the movement.

“Why didn’t you tell me about this from the beginning?” Katie asked sadly, moving the wet-vac away so they could scrub the stained carpet further.

“You were grieving at the time.” Bubbles formed on the carpet as Patton began scrubbing, filling his nose with a scent to drown out the alcohol. “You didn’t need Logan’s added burden and we had it handled. For a while, I guess.”

“Had it handled?”

“He’s not an alcoholic, Katie.” His voice was defensive, hoping not to regret pulling Katie into their secret. “You know Lo. He has one drink and that’s it, but after Jason…he went too far. He’s been fine this whole time. I swear this is the first time since that he’s done this.”

With a solemn nod, Katie went back to scrubbing. She believed Patton; he had no reason to lie.

“Something happened with Virgil, Patton. I’m sure of it.”

“Any idea what?”

“No. But I’m going to find out.”

“Me to.”
