As always, day one featured a packed agenda – and you better believe the pace didn’t let up on day two. Sharing insights and inspiration We had another busy morning on the main stage. The day kicked off with a moving welcome from Te Raranga Whanui Kapahaka group, followed by an insightful conversation between Xerocon host Julia Zimero and Xero CEO, Sukhinder Singh Cassidy. They discussed everything from Sukhinder’s upbringing and early career to life lessons and the importance of finding your superpower. Next up, we heard some fascinating insights on high performing practices from Australian Country Manager, Will Buckley. He also talked about the ikigai – the Japanese concept of finding a greater purpose or sense of being – to encourage the audience to find deeper meaning in their work. Keeping AI centre stage We were lucky to have futurist and entrepreneur Mark Pesce get us thinking about how artificial intelligence (AI) might impact advisory in the years ahead. He spoke about the new landscape of large language models (LLMs) and explained how to harness tools like Chat GPT. The lasting message from Mark’s session, however, was that the true power of AI lies in collaboration with humans. He stressed that automation will never replace accountants and bookkeepers, only enhance trusted advisory with smarter and more intuitive tools. Closing Xerocon on a high After two packed days, we spent some time in the afternoon being reminded about the importance of mental health and wellbeing. Emma Murray, founder of High Performance Mindfulness, spoke to attendees about various ways to manage the rigours and pressures of business and life, sharing several practical takeaways to put to good use. Then, myself and the rest of the APAC leadership team – Bridget Snelling, Country Manager for New Zealand; Koren Wines, Regional Director for Asia; and Will Buckley, Country Manager for Australia – shared our highlights and learnings from an incredible couple of days. We were also thrilled to announce that Xerocon will return to the US in 2024! That’s right, after we head to London in June, we’re taking the ‘Coachella for accountants’ to Nashville from August 14 to 15 next year. ALLEDAAGSE VOORWERPEN BRENGEN MIJ DICHTER BIJ VINCENT VAN GOGH

Om dichter bij de figuur Vincent die Van Gogh was te komen kan ik mij figuurlijk begeven in zijn werk. Aan de hand neemt hij mij mee het veld in, de straat op, bij wijze van spreken. Maar hoewel de schilderijen en tekeningen gelaagd zijn, een dieper zijn in zich hebben, blijven het vlakke dimensies. Het beeld komt er in tot leven, maar de ruimte reikt niet verder dan het perspectief van een pad door het koren, een sterrenhemel boven het landschap en stoelen op het terras. Niet dikker dan een halve centimeter, niet dieper dan de haren van het penseel. De tekening is de suggestie van zijn, de illusie van het wezen in een plat vlak. Het schilderij verbeeldt de werkelijkheid, maar is slechts een verzameling verf op een doek. Modder aan een kwastje. De betovering van het kijken.

Om dichter bij de persoon Vincent die Van Gogh was te komen kan ik zijn brieven lezen. Brieven die hij stuurde aan zijn broer Theo. De correspondentie met vrienden. Ze geven een ruime blik op de kunstenaar als individu. Hij laat het achterste van zijn tong zien in die schrijfsels, zo zodat ik op het puntje van mijn stoel zit. Door de brieven ken ik de achtergrond van zijn werk. Doorzie ik de schilderijen en begrijp ik de tekeningen. De schetsen tussen de regels door onthullen zijn gedachten, de inspiratie en de emotie. Het is het script van zijn leven, denken en doen. Daarmee kan ik de film op mijn kijken en zien laten projecteren. En natuurlijk kan ik ook zijn wezen puren uit de vele zelfportretten die hij door de jaren van zijn korte leven heen heeft gemaakt.

Om dichter bij de mens Vincent die Van Gogh was te komen is kunsthistorica Alexandra van Dongen figuurlijk gaan graven in zijn kunstwerken. Figuurlijk gaan spitten in zijn brieven. Met archeologische precisie heeft ze vondsten bloot gelegd, afgestoft en vervolgens te kijk gezet in het boek en de tentoonstelling “Dichter bij Vincent”. Die alledaagse voorwerpen zeggen veel over Vincent van Gogh zelf en zeker over de tijd en de omgeving waarin hij leefde. Hij zette ze gedetailleerd naar de werkelijkheid in zijn schilderijen en op zijn tekeningen. Zijn werken krijgen er een plaatsbepaling mee, een historische achtergrond. Een punt om in de tijd naar terug te kunnen keren. Voordat Van Gogh zich waagde aan verf en penseel was hij met potlood en krijt een documentalist. Hij hield onbewust het archief van de geschiedenis bij.

Vincent had belangstelling voor de lagere kaste, de mindere elite van het voetvolk, of wel de gewone mens die toch betekenis had voor het reilen en zeilen van de maatschappij. De werklieden; boeren en buitenlui, wevers en spinners, de postbode, de werkvrouw. Lui die de samenleving draaiende hielden. In het zweet des aanschijns werkten van ’s morgens vroeg tot ’s avonds laat. Die krachtige karakters stonden model voor het verhaal dat Vincent ons naliet. Nog voordat de korenvelden en de zonnebloemen, cipressen en sterrennachten, het nachtleven en de zaaier op het land zijn doeken bevolkten schilderde Van Gogh stillevens om zich te bekwamen in het vak. Stillevens met alledaagse voorwerpen als model, met bloemen en fruit die het moment van het jaar duiden.

Van Dongen heeft zich tijdens een curator in residence periode verdiept in onder meer de potten en pannen, weefgetouwen en spoelwielen die Van Gogh heeft vastgelegd in zijn werk. De conservator historische vormgeving van Museum Boijmans van Beuningen was een maand te gast in het atelier van het Vincent van Goghhuis in Zundert. Een plek waar kunstenaars geïnspireerd raken door de omgeving waar Vincent opgroeide. “Vanwege hun creativiteit en sensitiviteit zijn kunstenaars goed in staat de ‘geest van de plek’ te doorgronden en die te vertalen naar krachtige nieuwe werken”, schrijft directeur-conservator Ron Dirven in zijn voorwoord tot het boek.

Het onderzoek van Van Dongen is daarom interessant omdat het een inkijk geeft in vooral huishoudelijke zaken en het uitgaansleven van toen weleer. Dat het gekoppeld is aan de schilderijen van Vincent van Gogh geeft het speurwerk extra cachet. Door de kunst van Van Gogh op detail uit te pluizen, elk voorwerp erin afgebeeld te doorgronden, te identificeren en de herkomst ervan te achterhalen, plaatst de kunsthistorica de schilder in zijn tijd. Het onderwijst mij de tijd waarin hij leefde, het dateert zijn werken naar de voorwerpen. Omdat Van Gogh zo precies de vorm en beschildering van de objecten op doek en papier heeft vast gelegd kan de oorsprong ervan grondig worden onderzocht. Zo is een boek ontstaan waarin aan de hand van Van Gogh’s werken teruggegaan kan worden in de tijd.

Van ieder andere schilder kan zo een zelfde queeste worden ondernomen. Dat dit bij Van Dongen Van Gogh is geworden komt doordat ze zich buiten haar comfortzone van Rotterdam in Zundert kon concentreren op die plek. De plek waar Van Gogh als jonge knaap heeft gewandeld en waar zijn geest, voor degene die vatbaar is voor een dergelijke verbeelding, nog steeds ronddwaalt. Leven en werken van Vincent spreken door zijn kunstenaarsmanieren nog voortdurend aan. Zijn invloed op de kunst na hem is groot. De expressie die hij in de impressie wist te brengen is een spiegel van zijn leven. De afgebeelde voorwerpen maken, doordat ze nu een historische duiding hebben gekregen, dat leven evenwel minder mysterieus. De figuur Vincent daalt van zijn voetstuk af en blijkt ook maar een gewoon mens te zijn.

“Dichter bij Vincent” is meer een naslagwerk dan dat het een kunstboek is. Het toont de voorwerpen die door Van Gogh in stillevens en op genrestukken werden gebruikt. Niet de schilderijen worden besproken, als wel de materialen die daar op staan afgebeeld. Van Dongen heeft deze dingen diepgaand onderzocht, de oorsprong ervan gevorst. De tentoonstelling onder dezelfde titel is vormgegeven door de kunstenaars André Smits en Monika Dahlberg. Het is geen opsomming en rangschikking van de onderzochte voorwerpen geworden, maar laat op een kunstzinnige manier de originele voorwerpen zien die Van Gogh daadwerkelijk als model heeft gebruikt. Het onderzoek is vertaalt naar een expositie met teksten, tekeningen en collages om de getoonde voorwerpen te ondersteunen. Objecten uit zijn nalatenschap die worden beheerd door het Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam en Musée d’Orsay Parijs. En archeologische vondsten uit de tuin van de pastorie in Nuenen. Deze voorwerpen dragen het DNA van de kunstenaar, de scherven de grond waar hij ooit heeft gestaan.
