Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day is a national holiday celebrated on June 24 in Quebec, where it’s also known as ‘Fête nationale du Québec’ (‘national holiday of Quebec’ in English). Many Canadian Francophone communities outside of Quebec also celebrate Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day.

The holiday festivities start on June 23 and people gather to celebrate Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day and Francophone culture with outdoor activities, parades, concerts, and fireworks. Smaller celebrations are also held in neighborhoods, like bonfires, barbecues, and picnics. The white fleur-de-lis on the flag of Quebec is the symbol of this holiday. Blue and white are the colors of the day, and the flag is waved and hoisted at Fête nationale du Québec events.

The history of Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day is more than 100 years old. The day originally marked the honorary remembrance of the Christian saint, John the Baptist, but all this changed in 1834 when Canadian-French journalist Ludger Duvernay witnessed a St. Patrick’s Day celebration in Montreal. Seeing the grand celebration for an honorary figure inspired him to form a similar holiday for French Canadians to honor their heritage. Duvernay established the charitable association, the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Society, in the same year, and the holiday was observed for the first time on June 24. The association was chartered in 1849 with the aim of promoting moral and social progress.

Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day was celebrated on and off for years until it finally became an official holiday in Quebec in 1925. The day has been observed every year since and has become a mark of Francophone culture.

One of the first recognized celebrations of Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day took place on the banks of the Saint Lawrence River with bonfires and shots from a cannon.

1694 Holiday declared

Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day is declared a public holiday by the second bishop of Quebec, Jean-Baptiste de La Croix de Chevrières de Saint-Vallier.

1744 The bishop of Quebec ruins the party

According to some sources, Henri-Marie Dubreil de Pontbriand, the sixth bishop of Quebec, tries to abolish Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day celebrations because he felt they had strayed too far from their religious origins.

1834 Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day Promoted

Journalist Ludger Duvernay, inspired by Montreal’s Saint Patrick’s Day celebrations, establishes the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Society to promote Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day.

1977 Fete Nationale du Quebec

Lieutenant Governor Hugues Lapointe declares June 24, Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day, a national holiday in Quebec.

Traditions

Many celebratory events are organized around Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day. From small family gatherings like picnics, bonfires, parties, and yard sales, to large organized events such as concerts, parades, sports tournaments, and firework displays, there is something for everyone. Church bells also ring in celebration, and local funfairs and dances are hosted. These events are also sometimes broadcast live on TV or live-streamed on social media. La jupe courte et arrondie est plissée tout autour à repincés qui dans le bas restent libres; elle est dentelée et brodée en grosse laine et en soie de même ton. Elle tombe sur un très haut volant plissé et brodé simulant une seconde jupe. Ce volant est plus haut derrière que devant.

Boléro carré plissé et brodé comme la jupe ouvert sur un gilet croisé et drapé en satin liberty capucine rentré dans une ceinture drapée et en pointe. Grand col découpé en forme d'empiècement où se retrouve la même broderie. La manche est plissée jusqu'au coude pour fournir un haut volant également dentelé et brodé.

The short, rounded skirt is pleated all around with darts which remain free at the bottom; it is laced and embroidered in coarse wool and silk of the same tone. It falls on a very high pleated and embroidered ruffle simulating a second skirt. This steering wheel is higher behind than in front.

Square bolero, pleated and embroidered like the skirt, open over a double-breasted and draped cardigan in nasturtium liberty satin tucked into a draped, pointed belt. The sleeve is pleated at the shoulder and at the bottom and finished with three small black liberty frills.

Nous sommes devenus plus sages dans les années 2010.

Et nous allons fermement jusqu'en 2020 et au-delà.

Il s'avère que nous avons traversé HUIT décennies différentes...

DEUX siècles différents...

DEUX millénaires différents...

Nous sommes passés du téléphone avec un opérateur pour les appels longue distance, des cabines téléphoniques, aux appels vid��o partout dans le monde.

Nous sommes passés des diapositives à YouTube, des disques vinyles à la musique en ligne, des lettres manuscrites aux e-mails et Whats App.

Des matchs en direct à la radio, à la télévision en noir et blanc, à la télévision couleur, puis à la télévision HD 3D.

Nous sommes allés au magasin de vidéos et maintenant nous regardons Netflix.

Nous avons connu les premiers ordinateurs, les cartes perforées, les disquettes et maintenant nous avons des gigaoctets et des mégaoctets sur nos smartphones.

Nous avons porté des shorts tout au long de notre enfance, puis des pantalons longs , des pats d'eph ou des mini-jupes, des Oxfords, des Clarks, des foulards palestiniens, des combinaisons, et des jeans bleus.

Nous avons évité la paralysie infantile, la méningite, la poliomyélite, la tuberculose, la grippe porcine et maintenant le COVID-19.

Nous avons fait du patin à roulettes, du roller, du skate, du tricycle, du vélo, du cyclomoteur, de l'essence ou du diesel et maintenant nous conduisons des hybrides ou des électriques.

Nous avons joué aux petits

chevaux et aux dames, aux osselets et aux billes, au 1000 bornes et au monopoly, maintenant il y a candy crush sur nos smartphones

Et nous lisions...beaucoup

Et la religion de nos camarades d'école n'était pas un sujet...

Nous buvions l'eau du robinet et la limonade dans des bouteilles en verre, et les légumes dans notre assiette étaient toujours frais, aujourd'hui on se fait livrer les repas

Oui, nous avons traversé beaucoup de choses, mais quelle belle vie nous avons eu !

Ils pourraient nous décrire comme des «exannuels» ; des gens qui sont nés dans ce monde des années 50, qui ont eu une enfance analogique et une vie adulte numérique.

Il faudrait y ajouter la révolution Biologique à laquelle nous avons assisté. En 1960, la Biologie était très descriptive. On a assisté à l'avènement de la Biologie Moléculaire : les molécules de la Vie ont été decouvertes: ADN, ARN etc. Quand on voit tout ce qui en a découlé : thérapie génique, empreintes genetiques, et autres les progrès sont considérables.

Nous avons en quelque sorte «tout vu» !

Notre génération a littéralement vécu et témoigné plus que toute autre dans toutes les dimensions de la vie.

C'est notre génération qui s'est littéralement adaptée au «CHANGEMENT».
