I am back with some french book recommendations! At @maddiesbookshelves's urging I read both books of La ville sans vent by Eléonore Devillepoix, and they were great! I found the best approach to practicing french consistently for me was to read 10 pages a day (I set aside a specific time). I didn't bother doing any writing, speaking, or listening practice because I end up procrastinating and doing no french instead of some french.
Anyway, the books! La ville sans vent is a french YA fantasy series written by a european parlimentary attaché, and that really tells you almost everything you need to know about the books. The main plot centers around Arka, a 13-year-old magician/amazon with a really good horse and a father to locate, and Lastyanax, a 19-year-old burnt out, barely graduated politician who wants to create change while also finding out who murdered his teacher. The worldbuilding (like the covers) is stunning, and I wish Hyperborea was real. The other thing that makes the books is the author's solid grasp of politics; change doesn't come easy, regime change isn't always for the better, and corruption is everywhere.
These two books rival most YA fantasy I've read in english, and between La ville sans vent and La passe-miroir (which I read in english), I'm starting to think that the french have unlocked some sort of secret when it comes to YA fantasy.

I just had an idea.
It seems to me that LPM's ending would have been much better received if Ophelia had entered the mirror to him before Thorn let go of her hand. It's better to be on the other side, but together... 🥺

Oh Lord. Oh dear God. Just finished reading the Mirror Visitor Saga (le Passe Miroir).
I am okay. Such lovely and cute books. Definitely they didn't drain my mind and soul or anything.
