CONGRATS FOR THE 500 FOLLOWERS! 💫💫 can i request letters A, B, O, P, Q, S and Y of the sfw list for Malleus and Vil? But in a platonic way, as friendship, if you can<3
🍓I've had this one sitting in my inbox for a while because I've just not been in the mood to write for Malleus. He's a special flavor of autistic that I can only write when the inspiration strikes lol.
Malleus
A - Affection: Malleus is VERY affectionate! He's been loved on a lot by Lilia, so I wouldn't say he's touch-starved, but he does act like he is. He always wants to be holding you in some way, and if you are in his vicinity he will come and find you just to be near you. Always greets you with a hug and a kiss, regardless of who is around or where you're at. Worst of all, he gets pouty and throws a Malleus brand temper tantrum if you deny him any affection.
B - Best Friend: It's really weird to be best friends with Malleus. You sorta found him somewhere on accident, spoke with him, and gained yourself a dragon. You don't ever see him in any place that is conventional or normal, and you rarely actually "hang out" with him. When you do see him, though, he's prone to have these really deep interesting conversations with you and then disappear. Quite freaky.
O - Open: It doesn't occur to Malleus that, maybe, he doesn't need to tell you his whole life story at random times of the day. I mean, seriously, you guys will be doing something like study, and then he'll drop that fattest lore bomb known to man and leave you speechless.
P - Patience: Not very. In fact, most things that would piss other people off just tend to make him laugh. He's essentially a god amongst men with an ego to match, and that ego is anything BUT fragile. It's hard to make him mad. You can upset him and make him out, but anger is rare and SCARY.
Q - Quizzes: He's both really good and very bad. Malleus both has some much going on in his head and absolutely nothing. He remembers important dates, and all of your favorite things, but when it comes to like pulling through on important stuff? He sucks! He forgets! He feels so bad after too, like on his knees begging for forgiveness. Then, at the same time, he'll remember something really obscure that you mentioned in passing and it makes you wonder how the hell his mind works.
S - Security: Oh, Malleus is the MOST protective out of anyone in the twst cast. He's a dragon, after all, and they're mostly known for protecting things. You are his most prized and adored treasure, and he protects you as such. I'm talking like, he's always by your side, always watching you, always ready to jump at the chance to show you how amazing and powerful he is. Now, he never gets the chance because who in their right mind would ever upset THE Malleus Draconia, but he still keeps hoping.
Y - Yuck: He hates it when his title is held over his head. He wants friends and connections and love, but his crown gets in the way. If you ever try to use him for his power that would be an instant no from him, especially if he thought you loved him for more than just his position.
Vil
A - Affection: Vil is like... moderately affectionate. Now, he's not exactly the sweetest person. Vil is all about appearances, and hanging off in public doesn't exactly look good. In private, though? He's making up for the missed affection tenfold. Now he's not a huge cuddler, but he is a kisser. And kiss you he does, everywhere. He's so pleased with the bright red lipstick marks all over your face. On top of that, he pampers you like a princess. Massages, face masks, sweets and tea. Only the best for his darling.
B - Best Friend: Vil just decides that you're friends, and then you're stuck with him. It's really not bad though! He's quite a gossip, so you hear all the latest drama around the halls of NRC. You get free makeovers and get to relax around Pomefiore whenever you want. Most importantly, your social status rises to the top, because any friend of Vil's could be a friend worth having.
O - Open: Vil? Open? Please. He's got walls up greater than the wall of China. It takes him a lot of time to open up to you because all of those stupid emotions he's feeling make him so weak. Once you get the first bit of Vil lore, though, he's like a running faucet and just spills everything everywhere. It really makes you both grow so much closer though.
P - Patience: Eh. He's not awful, better than Riddle at least. Vil does have a temper though, and it's not as uncommon to see it as you may think. Now, he rarely ever gets mad at you unless you do something so stupid that he can't help it in his disbelief. Still, his anger is a sight to witness, and much worse when it's directed at you.
Q - Quizzes: Vil is very good at knowing everything there is to know about you. He writes it down, actually! In his notes app! He has a whole list that's just about you and your likes and dislikes and everything you tell him that he thinks is important. He makes sure to utilize it all the time, and it's really sweet how seen he makes you feel.
S - Security: Vil is moderately protective of you. He doesn't really worry about anyone in your classes, it's rare to find someone actually willing to mess with him. What he is worried about is the media. If they got ahold of you, his more intense fans might try to rip you apart. So, he shields you from that as best as he can, because he doesn't want to see you hurt.
Y - Yuck: If you only want him for his beauty. He is pretty, he knows that, and he understands that it's likely a part of why you love him. However, if you only seem to care about how pretty he is or only compliment his looks, he hates it. There is more to him, why can't you see that?

This is just my usual random thought:
We already had many headcanons of Garou as hero partner for Badd, or as a villain, or sometimes as a vigilante. But what if Garou never becomes any of that and just stay as a civillian only?
So I was thinking the possibility of Garou staying as a civillian is where Garou and Badd had met back then in their childhood era. Like, if kid Badd comes to protect kid Garou from the bullies and giving kid Garou a little hopes that not all of the "heroes" are bad because Badd is always be there for him.
Of course Garou still not convinced enough to completely changed his mind about heroes in general, but at least he would let Badd pursuing a career as professional hero. Despite Badd getting involved into something that Garou hated all along, he could never hate Badd himself. Because Badd is his bestfriend and such great example of "ideal hero", Garou has good faith on him to do the right job.
Now I was thinking since his intention to be a monster was lessened thanks to Badd's influence, Garou would be focusing on becomes the greatest martial artist since he loves the sport so much and it's really good practice to protect himself or people from any bullies. Badd was 100% encouraged him about that, he would definitely comes to visit Garou on Bang's dojo during his training days or even on national tournaments whenever Badd was not on-duty to support Garou.
If Garou finally mastered his martial art skill, Bang would inherit his dojo and hand over his mentorship rights to Garou. At that time, Badd also had just promoted as one of S-Class Heroes in Hero Association. Both Garou and Badd pursuing their own career, with Garou as martial artist master/teacher and Badd as S-Class hero. Yet both of them still maintaining their friendship vl(and mutual pinings, ofc) very well.
One thing Garou disliked about Badd being a hero, was the fact that Hero Association always put him into a dangerous mission with little to no regard about his safety guarantee. Not to mention Badd is quite a reckless person who wont get back until he's done with his duty. Being selfless is a good trait for sure, but not when the situation could endanger himself.
That's why Garou always almost getting heart attack everytime he found out Badd got heavily injured after missions, or worst, ended up being hospitalized. He worried so much for his dearly bestfriend (and beloved crush), that it made Garou swore to strengthened himself so he can protect Badd when the mission gone awry.
Now imagine people in the city witnessed the S-Class Hero Metal Bat was often saved or assisted by this random strong civillian. Not the fellow registrated heroes, but THIS powerful handsome white-haired martial artist who was suddenly popped in into the battlefield out of nowhere and helping the delinquent hero. Then after all has finished, they're always bickering like old married couple about why the hero was so goddamned reckless or why did the martial artist intervened his job in random moment.
Sometimes people saw the martial artist would immediately left before Metal Bat scolding him, or the martial artist would bridal-carried the unconscious injured Metal Bat and running towards nearby hospital for getting immeadiate help.
Later on, Badd was desperately asking Garou, why didn't he becomes a hero when all the things he has done is to help people, since Garou has real good potential as professional hero. Garou said he was still disliking the heroes system, thus he would never comes for Hero Association to offer himself as their members. He hates them and doesn't need their approval or their money. Garou doesn't care about it all.
It doesn't matter if he wasn't registrated as official hero members at all, as long as he still can help and save Badd or weak people in need, it's totally alright for Garou. Because Badd is one of few people he really cares about, and Badd is very important to Garou because Garou loves him so much.
As soon as he confessed his feeling, Garou hugged his beloved childhood hero tightly, whispering how much Badd means to him in his life and how deep he has fallen in love with Badd. That he was afraid of losing Badd one day because his recklessness or some accident caused by HA's negligence, that he truly cares for Badd and his well-beings and he will absolutely makes sure to keep Badd safe no matter what.
The sudden love confession from Garou surprised Badd, yet he feels so happy that his bestfriend actually also has the same feeling as him after these years. With sincere bright smile, Badd thanking Garou for everything he has done for him and said that Garou is his "Hero", then he holds the wolfboy's face with so much tenderness before kissing Garou softly on his lips.
That was the moment Garou nearly crying in happiness, because he finally have someone saying that he deserved to be called as a Hero, and he has someone who loves him back..
------------------------
--- THE END ----
------------------------
Notes:
This was just a short self-indulgent writing because I wanted to have AU headcanon where Garou stays as a normal civillian instead of pursuing his need to become a monster because of Badd's influence to him as childhood hero.
So here we are: Childhood Frienda S-Class Hero Badd & Civillian Martial Artist Garou AU! 👏😎
I think the idea of Garou popped in out of nowhere and swooped in to help Badd in the middle of mission kinda amused me 😆
Also, please think about this: a young Martial Artist Master prodigy Garou teaching kids (including Tareo!) in Bang's dojo as main job, and assisting Badd in dangerous mission as side job (he still wont register as pro-hero, though) 👀👀✨
Any other thought about this headcanon? If there's any, it's okay to tell me 😳💦👉👈
That's all I can write for today!
I don't know if there's still people who wants to read my writings, but I really appreciate anyone who still willing read this dumbass random nonsense 😚🙏💖
I'll try to keep going on making crumbs of Batarou contents for the fandom! 💪😤👍✨ Wish me luck I wont get burnout since lately I got distracted by other fandom (still haven't make any content yet for it but I'm getting the hype 😆🎉)
Thank you so much for always listening and reading my silly headcanons, hope you guys have a nice day~ 😘❤💜💙💚💛💖💝🌸🌻💐

~Lilia:
DO U REALIZE WHAT THIS MEANS
*whispers* G-Garou Sensei 😩👌✨ I’ve got goosebumps rn
Imagine Badd calling him that teasingly or when Garou’s giving him an earful for being so reckless😜 “Whatever you say Garou Sensei” oml he’d get so flustered about it!!
This idea is so sweet though 🥺 instead of becoming a hardened criminal he’s just the slightly aloof martial arts guy who has a soft spot for kids and one particular hero 😌 I love it!! 💕 And ofc I’ve always thought he’d make a great teacher, especially for kids who were bullied like him, or are weak and insecure for whatever reason. He’d never turn anyone away, especially because he remembers what an impact meeting someone like Badd (a friend to stick up for him and encourage him) had on him as a kid 💖
TYSM ANON!! 💕😘 Always great to hear from you! Dw I fully support you no matter what fandom you’re in, if you’re hype about something you should go for it!! I’ll still be in this fandom chillin whenever you wanna come talk about stuff 😆 Though I rlly hope you don’t get burned out from it 😖 Wishing you the best of luck and a great day!! 💗✨😚

( @crazyyanderefangirlfan (〃ω〃) here you go! since you didnt specificy any letters i did the whole thing! it is a long post so i'll put it under a read more!)
Affection: How do they show their love and affection? How intense would it get?
Very strictly- Sebek has a rather particular form of showing love. Whenever he takes his darling out in public he will expect absolute perfect behaviour- no PDA, no speaking unless spoken to. However, he'll become more affectionate behind closed doors: he's still quite shy, so even just kissing or cuddling his darling is sometimes too much and he'll have to go cool off.
Blood: How messy are they willing to get when it comes to their darling?
Not as much as one would expect. Even though he is definitely well trained and strong enough to stand his ground and his darling's, he is working for Lord Maleus- he can't have his actions sully his lord's name! However, if he accidentally snaps or gets out of hand, he might go beg Lilia for help, and the older fae will certainly make any trace of Sebek's violence disappear.
Cruelty: How would they treat their darling once abducted? Would they mock them?
He won't mock them, but he is so demanding and high-strung that he comes off as cruel. He expects his darling to serve Maleus too, but obey him at the same time- any time his darling fails at a task, or even worse, fail at something Maleus asked, they'll be subject to get yelled at for hours by Sebek.
Darling: Aside from abduction, would they do anything against their darling’s will?
He won't touch his darling for affection if they tell him not to- however, he will absolutely order them around without much remorse. His darling is living on a tight schedule set by him, and any rupture to this structured lifestyle might earn them a lecture or a slap if Sebek is at his absolute limit.
Exposed: How much of their heart do they bare to their darling? How vulnerable are they when it comes to their darling?
He is constantly trying to be the best guard for Maleus, always on guard and ready to pounce. Even though realistically Maleus doesn't expect that much from him, Sebek still feels pressured- he might cry into his darling's chest on particularly bad nights, asking for reassurance that he's doing a good job protecting Maleus and being their partner. If his darling doesn't comfort him, he won't punish them- however he'll be in an extremely bad mood all week, which is never good for anyone.
Fight: How would they feel if their darling fought back?
He's outraged at this behaviour! How dare his darling act out against him?! He's already too busy with school and guardinh Maleus- these actions will not be tolerated. As much as it hurts his heart, he might have to use some painful magic in order to teach his darling a lesson- although he'll definitely cry when he sees his darling in pain, it's something he must do.
Game: Is this a game to them? How much would they enjoy watching their darling try to escape?
No, it's not. Sebek is quite serious about this relationship- he truly believes that all he does will help shape his darling into an ideal person, and that together they can protect Maleus. He won't tolerate any attempts to escape: after the very first one, he'll get Lilia to put any sort of ancient spell on his darling so they cannot escape. Hell, even Maleus might throw in a curse for Sebek's darling not to run away: the two ancient fae find Sebek's infatuation quite entertaining.
Hell: What would be their darling’s worst experience with them?
If his darling ever attempted to hurt Maleus, Sebek would have no mercy in punishing them. He would have tears in his eyes as he cast painful hexes on his darling, leaving them chained up in one of Diasomnia's towers for days on end to starve and suffer under the intense magic. It's bad enough that Lilia has to be the one to put a stop to it, before Sebek caused irreversible damage to his darling's body and mind.
Ideals: What kind of future do they have in mind for/with their darling?
He only has one goal in life, and that is to protect Maleus. He expects his darling to do the same- after all, he believes he can train them into a guard almost as perfect as him! He doesn't have concrete plans for after graduation- he does expect to marry his darling, but it's likely he'll keep by Maleus' side, so his darling better enjoy their new job!
Jealousy: Do they get jealous? Do they lash out or find a way to cope?
It highly depends on who it is that interacts or talks with his darling. If it's people he trusts, like Lilia or Maleus (and even Silver, to an extent) he'll simply keep an eye on them while they're near his darling. Because he knows any bad action of him could bring disgrace to Maleus, he grits his teeth and bears it when he hears other students talk about his darling, although he might snap if he finds himself alone face-to-face with one of these people later.
Kisses: How do they act around or with their darling?
When it's just him and his darling, he's shokingly shy. Holding hands is enough tl send his heart into a frenzy and make his whole face red- a kiss could probably kill him. It's like that at first; he doesn't want to scare his darling, but as much as he's shy, he's also... Very, very eager. Expect makeout session when he gets random bursts of courage- although later he'll be so embarrassed he won't even look his darling in the eyes... Until he gets the urge to be close to them again...
Love letters: How would they go about courting or approaching their darling?
Before kidnapping them, he was both very obvious and yet ignorant to his own feelings. Everyone knew he liked his darling based on how much attention he'd pay to them (and by how much he'd scold them for "trying to distract him"). When he finally has his darling to himself- aka when Maleus asks the headmaster to transfer Sebek's darling to Diasomnia (and Crowley knows better than to refuse: Maleus is too powerful to risk angering) and Sebek keeps them with him at all times- he continues this behaviour, although he already accepted he's deeply in love.
Mask: Are their true colors drastically different from the way they act around everyone else?
He's much more tender than he lets on. Even though everyone knows how loud and competitive he is, nobody would guess how soft he is when he's with his beloved. Also, he's very physically needy but shy at the same time: he seeks his darling's affections but never dares vocalise what he wants. His darling better be good at reading his mood, because giving him love when he wants it is the best way to keep him a relatively tolerable partner.
Naughty: How would they punish their darling?
If it's a spur of the moment thing, he might slap them- however that's as much as he'd harm them in the bodily sense. He feels too bad when he physically hurts his darling, so when punishment is necessary he opts for isolation and magic. He'll read up on hexes and cursed that cause feelings of pain, but no actual bodily harm- he'll still feel incredible sad when he hears his darling scream and cry in pain wherever he locked them up, but he'll take some comfort knowing the pain they feel is "fake" and their body will be fine once the spell wears off
Oppression: How many rights would they take away from their darling?
If his darling wasn't in Diasomnia before, they are now- and they share a room with him. He'll still let his darling attend to classes; however, the second a class is over they must report back to him. There isn't even any chance for them to ask for help: Sebek will absolutely go the extra mile to find any curse or spell that will force his darling to not be able to talk about their current dilemma. Aside from classes, every waking moment of his darling's time is spent with Sebek.
Patience: How patient are they with their darling?
Not very. He's always high-strung and ready to reprimand someone for not adressing lord Maleus correctly: he has very little tolerance for mistakes or misbehaviours in his darling's part. Luckily he rarely truly "punishes" his darling: for the most part he loudly reprimands them for a couple hours.
Quit: If their darling dies, leaves, or successfully escapes, would they ever be able to move on?
He would be devastated. Death, escape- whatever it was, it simply showed he failed as a lover. He'd definitely blame himself for not being careful enough- and he wouldn't be able to replace his darling, ever. He'll probably grow and marry whatever fae woman crosses his path just to get people to shut up about how he's "worryingly lonely", but he's definitely broken inside for the rest of his life.
Regret: Would they ever feel guilty about abducting their darling? Would they ever let their darling go?
No? Why would he? He isn't doing anything wrong- at least that's what Lilia told him (in fact Lilia knows how messed up the whole ordeal is, but... Hey! Free entertainment for him!). Besides, he's definitely helping his darling improve by forcing them to stick to his strict schedule. They should be happy! Thanks to him they get the privileged job of watching over Maleus by his side.
Stigma: What brought about this side of them (childhood, curiosity, etc)?
He's been training his whole life to protect his lord. There simply wasn't any room for love before, and he'd never dealt with such strong emotions. His naturally intense attitude love advice coming from an equally inexperienced Maleus and definitely malicious love advice coming from Lilia who just wanted to see how far Sebek would take it, combined with how much he discovered he enjoyed affection and praise from his darling, ended up being a mix that sealed his darling's fate.
Tears: How do they feel about seeing their darling scream, cry, and/or isolate themselves?
Confusion and guilt. Is this- is this his fault? He definitely panics: he's never had to comfort someone like this in his life. He'll force his darling into bed and tuck them in, trying to confort them how he best remembers babies are comforted- however, if his darling was crying because of him, he'll probably make it even worse with all his attempts to "help".
Unique: Would they do anything different from the classic yandere?
His darling isn't gone from the public's eye: everyone knows very well they are currently in Diasomnia and always by Sebek's side. He isn't trying to keep his darlin for himself only- he truly doesn't mind if they have to interact with teachers during class, or if they have to be seen by classmates. His darling never goes missing: they are just always, ALWAYS, by his side.
Vice: What weakness can their darling exploit in order to escape?
There's not much his darling can do to escape. Sure, his easy to fluster side would be almost too easy to exploit- if his darling took initiative and kissed him, and encouraged him to get handsy, he'd get so overwhelmed and flustered he'd have to excuse himself to "cool off" for a good while. However- because his darling is already hexed and cursed and under god knows how many tracking and entrapment spells, it's an useless endeavour.
Wit’s end: Would they ever hurt their darling?
Again, he'll never go further than a slap. He's very hesitant to hurt his darling with his hands- however he really won't hesitate to place any sort of spell to cause unbearable, writhing pain on his darling if he believes they deserve it.
Xoanon: How much would they revere or worship their darling? To what length would they go to win their darling over?
Praise him too much and let him get too much confidence and suddenly he's all over his darling. He'd never admit it, but he's a bit of a pervert- he'd probably spent hours staring at his darling before, and now he can't keep his hands off them. But once he regains composure he immediately scrambles off- no! He only serves Maleus!
Yearn: How long do they pine after their darling before they snap?
It really doesn't take long. He's never felt this way before, and his trusted seniors are telling him to just act on those dark impulses so... Why not?
Zenith: Would they ever break their darling?
It wouldn't be shoking. The tight schedule, the expectations, the mental torture of his punishments- his darling is bound to break eventually. Sebek would wonder why his darling's eyes are suddenly so lifeless, and why they speak so robotically- it's like they're just repeating the same words of praise to him without meaning it, barely even talking anymore. However, he doesn't mind: even though his darling isn't fit to be Maleus' guard anymore, they're still his darling- he might even feel less ashamed of affection with a darling so utterly broken!

For the commentary tag: “”I can only offer myself,” Yuri replies” to about “The shout is too late.” from chapter 5 of The Thirst for Adventure. Also AGHH choosing a specific short section was so hard, just. The whole thing. One of the most memorable scenes I’ve ever read in a fic.
Bruh. That’s 800 words XD
AlsoEXCUSE YOU HOW DARE YOU SAY SUCH NICE THINGS ABOUT MY WRITING (because theinternet does not allow hugging and I want to give you all of the hugs rn likedude, I cannot emphasise enough how much your opinion means to me, you’re afantastic writer and Heart is literally one of my fave YOI fanfics of all time,I’m so fucking stoned that you like my shit, holy crap)
Warning:I’m gonna post it all below because I wrote that so long ago I barely rememberit and I want to be able to reference it as I respond :P
“Ican only offer myself,” Yuri replies.
Heis not shaking. The woman sneers at him anyway, her lip curling back to exposea mouth only half-full of teeth. Then, right before his eyes, her head opensup. A wound; the scar left by a sword. Stretching from the top of her headalmost to her eye, it splits her face and exposes her brain, but does notbleed. The skin is ripped, raw white and bloodless, and what he can only guessis the remaining mess of brain tissue is grey, like a carcass left to hang.
“Doesthis,” she hisses, moving closer, “deserve a half-blood’s revenge?”
IfYuri is shivering now, it is because she has chilled him to the bone. Standingthis close to her is like being immersed in the winter lake. It knocks all thebreath out of him.
“Ican only offer myself,” he repeats, choking it out as best he can, through whatfeels like lungs full of water.
“Notenough,” the woman spits, and steps back, sheathing her sword. “I will wait forsomeone better.”
Yuritries not to breathe a sigh of relief as the sensation dissipates. He coughs alittle, trying to clear his lungs of something that was never really there. Thechill, however, does not fade. The second widow steps forward.
“Whatwas your mother’s name?” She asks, hair whipping in the wind that wasn’t therethe moment before. It drags at the edge of his cloak, snatching it away fromhis fingers and throwing his hair in his face. It stings, cold, like tiny barbsof nettles.
“LarisaNikolayevna Plisetsky.” Yuri has to shout it above the churning and roilingair, and only hope that she can hear. To his great surprise, the woman stepsback immediately, and the wind drops to a breeze. “I know her name. She was agood woman. Your debt with me is balanced. I will not challenge you.” And thesecond sword is sheathed.
Liliahad told him that he might be in a better position than either of his brothers, upon meeting the widows, but he hadn’t anticipated by quite how much.
Unfortunately,his good luck cannot last.
Themoment the third woman steps forward, she introduces herself by name, and Yuriknows that he will have to fight.
“Iwas Véra Savvichna Ivanova. I fought and died for your ancestors over a hundredyears ago, only for my body to be tossed into the water as if I were nothing tothem. We will fight for my honour.”
“Iaccept your challenge.” Yuri does not take his sword. The nature of thechallenge is always the choice of the challenger.
Vérasteps forward and picks his sword from the ground, passing it to him.
“Sheatheit.” He does so, silently. “My body lies at the bottom of this river. You willswim down and retrieve it. If the river claims you, my debt is repaid. If yousurvive,” her eyes, dark and bloodshot, bore into him, “bury me properly.”
Yurilooks at the water. The river has been by their side since they left thecastle. It is fed by the mountain, from glacial streams, and this is not theseason for melt. The level of the water is well below the bridge and the bank, settled into the rocky hollow it has carved for itself. All the same, it isdeep, cold, and blue. He cannot see the bottom. Backing out now, however, is assure a death as drowning.
Hehas no choice.
Thethree women move back as he takes off his sword, and boots, then most of hislayers of clothing. As unwilling as he is to get his undershirt wet, and asmuch as it may hold him back in the water, he decides to keep it on. Divingnaked into a mountain river in autumn is only barely worse than diving inhalf-dressed, but he’ll take it. They move aside, allowing him to walk acrossto the halfway point of the bridge. Chancing a glance over his shoulder, Yurinotices that Otabek and Roza have edged closer. With a sharp shake of his head,he warns them as best he can. The fact that they’ve held off this long alreadyis surprising. He can’t say he would do the same if it looked like Otabek wasabout to jump into freezing water of his own volition.
Especiallyas neither of them will have any idea what is going on.
Hetakes a deep breath.
“Ready.”The two women who did not name themselves nod, and with matching smiles, jump, vanishing back into the water. The river does not splash.
Hefaces the river. Takes a deep breath.
“Goodluck,” Véra says, and pushes.
“YURI!”
Theshout is too late.
Holyfucking shit. Okay so MAJOR SPOILER ALERT.
This chapter was the culmination of so much research intoRussian mythology. I’ve already talked about everything that went into itfolklore-wise, but character-wise, I knew what I wanted to do to Yuri. He’sjust left home for the first time, essentially, and although he’s been warnedabout this kinda stuff his whole life, the first thing he’s faced with issomething that completely isolates him.
Hedoesn’t have the reassurance of his family or even his friends helping him. Buthe knows what he has to do. He faces up to the injustices that his ancestorscommitted, and for the first time in the story (I think) we see him be courageous withoutbeing angry.
As anillegitimate prince, his station offers him both protection and danger. This isa direct reversal of that; in court, revealing that he isn’t Lilia’s son is thedangerous part. He’s been forced to hide it, and even though he hates that andisn’t at all embarrassed by his mother or Nikolai, there’s always going to besome residual effects from being forced to hide part of yourself. Here, hisreal mother essentially saves his life twice just by existing. Basically, Iwanted to give Yuri proof that while his blood has absolutely dictated his lifeso far, that doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing. (Although theWidows do basically insult him for it the whole time, because, you know, social indoctrination).
Ithink it’s also important to understand how entrenched Yuri is in his rolehere. He’s wanted to be a knight his whole life, he’s been training for itsince before he can remember, and then he had that taken away from him. Notonly has he got it back, his first ever encounter literally requires him torisk his own life. But he does it. Because he is a knight now, and that’s whatknights do. They do whatever it takes. And Yuri has always, always donewhatever it takes. It’s something that he struggles with a little later, especially when he actually leaves the group, so I wanted to establish it early so that when that happened it almost felt like he was betraying himself as well as them by letting go of some of his values and key goals. And also it then shows how fucked up that big key bond thing makes him, because he doesn’t deal with it calmly or sensibly even though we know that he can.
There’salso a lot of traditional trial themes going on here. You know, he has to facethree tasks, the last of which is the worst, to prove himself kind of thing. All very ‘symbolic’ (idk it doesn’t feel like that when I write it). Taster of things to come! It’s definitely the simplestchallenge he’s faced so far, I think. For a start, there’s a very specific wayof dealing with it that he knows about, but also it doesn’t call his emotional state into question. Sure, it nearly kills him, but it’s a lot less gruelling than some of the stuff they go through later.
It’salso kind of a test for Beka too. We get to see how much he trusts Yuri, eventhough Yuri hasn’t always given him reason to, and it’s obvious that he’s in a verydangerous situation. Otabek is the first person to actually trust Yuri tohandle it on his own.
Butyeah, the folklore side of things was so much fun. I wanted to play withsomething that made it clear that Yuri isn’t the only supernatural being inthis world, but also that there’s a blur between the actual supernatural, simplesuperstition, and magic. Also, empathy. You know, they’re talking about theirdeaths and sort of forcing Yuri to experience them too. Like the sensation ofhis lungs filling with water, and the cold, and making him jump in the river –it sort of brings to life the brutality of what they faced. And we already knowthat, especially because of his influence, Yuri is a very humane person. It’sanother sort of inkling that he’s going to have issues helping Beka actuallyfight a war and kill people, even to protect more people in the long run. The ‘greatergood’ is much less of a clear concept for him.
Sothere you have it. Everything I was thinking when I was writing that scene! I’mnot sure a lot of it was very coherent but I hope it was interesting :P

There will be no more darkness when you believe in yourself.
The last couple of days have had some interesting moments. It seems the theme of this week has been small things happening that show me how much I have changed in just a year.
Yesterday during my first practice session before Yurio came in for his, I decided to do an improvised skate to his short program music, “On Love: Agape”. I love the music so much, and I was just in the mood to work on line, extension and transitions, those “make it beautiful” moments that draw the audience into the piece and the story you are telling that come between the jumps. A lot of the time, something really good will come of those moments where you just let the music guide you. I'm definitely not skilled enough to choreograph an entire program, but I like to have Victor watch me and record these improvised skates in case there's something there we can use later on. He'll also give me notes on what could be done better, what might not look quite right or fit together, and so on.
So I was skating to the music, immersing myself in it, when at one point I looked up in the middle of a spread-eagle and saw Yurio, Lilia and Coach Yakov coming in for their session with Yurio and Victor. Yurio did not look happy at all. I put it out of my mind till the end of the music, went to get Victor's notes, and then my morning session ended. I went rinkside to get out of my skates, and suddenly felt really awkward. The feeling was familiar, and the more I sat there, the worse I started to feel. Then Yurio skated by again and gave me a look I couldn't read and that was that. I went to the locker room and started feeling the awkwardness turn to anxiety.
It's hard to explain to people who have never gone through it that having this is not something you can control. Sure you can learn ways to deal with it, but when it's been ingrained in you for so long, it doesn't take much to kick you back into it. The rapidfire thoughts started flying through my head: Did I step on someone's toes? Did I offend by doing his music somehow? Oh god what if I shouldn't have done that, now what do I do... and onward.
I went to find my phone in my roller bag to distract myself and calm down and when I reached into the front pocket, I found... a cookie. A few days back Yurio randomly bought me six cookies that are loaded with sugary frosting because I was having an off day – which was random and unusual for him. Knowing I'd eat them if I knew where they were, I had Victor take them and hide them. So now, they're turning up randomly because he likes to surprise me. This was pretty much perfect timing and I munched on that while I texted Victor and asked him to come to where I was. He and I have come a long way from Cup of China, where he saw me for the first time at my absolute worst when I launched into a full-blown anxiety attack after being first in the short. We both learned something that day: Him, that asking what he should do and following through was what I needed, and me... that it was okay to ask for what I needed, even if it was only for him to silently support me. So many times I had been told that it was all in my head and I just needed to focus, that I never had the strength to come out and say what I needed to help me through those times that him learning to listen was a big step for us both. So that's pretty much what happened when he found me in the locker room. I told him I needed a hug, and that's just what I got, to take me out of my own head and back to the present.
When I got home that night, Yurio texted me and asked me if something was wrong. I didn't really want to get into it – by that point, I'd sort of put it to rest – but he pushed a bit until I just told him I was worried about something I'd been working on which wasn't really untrue. Nonetheless he said he'd talk to me the next day and today sure enough, he came over to me when he got in and asked if I wanted to have lunch with just him. Now, anyone who knows Yurio knows this is really unusual, so I decided to forgo my usual lunch routine and head to the cafe next door with him after a workout in the gym with Georgi, who was cracking me up with his oddball self today.
I thought it would be awkward because usually if Yurio is talking to me it's about skating, or he's growling insults (which are usually fake) or eyerolling at something Victor or I have said. But instead after we ordered, he looked me dead in the eyes and asked if Victor and I were fighting. It threw me off and I said that no, we weren't and asked why he thought that. Apparently he'd caught my vibe over this week – I had another moment earlier in the week which turned out to be a miscommunication between Victor and I – and was concered something was up. It had been furthered by him having come through the locker room and seeing Victor and I during that moment he was helping me work through the mini-panic I was having. I reassured him everything was fine and used the literal “It's not him, it's me” line to explain things. When I told him what had set me off, Yurio said then that he was in a bad mood at that time because of something Lilia had said, and that he actually hadn't even noticed I was skating to Agape at all.
He asked more about what I had meant though, and that prompted me to explain a bit about the anxiety. Yurio knew very well about my issues with skating (see: GPF 2015 when he went off on me in the men's room), but I don't know if he really knew what was going on. I didn't really go into it in detail, but pretty much explained that Victor and I are still learning, a year later, and the biggest thing is that this will probably be something I'll always struggle with to some degree.
He got quiet then as we ate, and then after a bit he made note that he and I had definitely had our differences, but that “all three of us have changed a lot” as he included Victor too. I told him then that I understood where he was coming from back when Victor came to Hasetsu as well: Victor had been his mentor when he'd come from Moscow to St. Petersburg, and he'd been lucky enough to train alongside the best in the world at a crucial formative age. Any kid would be thrown by suddenly losing that. But even within that, Victor had helped both of us to learn to fight in our own ways. Regardless of whatever happens in the future, Yurio and I share more than a name. We both have a common bond in someone who has been really important to helping us both grow up. He agreed, and got quiet again as we got ready to leave. He refused to let me pay for my lunch, so I owe him one next time around.
As we walked back to the rink he reminded me that, what seems like long ago now, I asked him to teach me how to do a quad salchow. He told me it was payback time and asked me to show him how to do an illusion spin. I said I would.
And then, I told him that Victor had shown me something I didn't know about from Rostelecom: Some footage of Yurio cheering me on, that is until JJ decided to be JJ and harass him for it. I think Victor is definitely rubbing off on me, because the old me would never have teased anyone because I had been through it so much myself. But I winked at Yurio and said that I always knew he loved me.
And as we went into the rink to lace up, we paused to watch Victor working on something on the ice, listening to some music in his head. And all casual like, oh hey, quad salchow, then back to some transition moves because yeah quad, no big deal.
Yurio looked at me and smirked. “Don't tell Victor. He'll send me back to Moscow. He doesn't like competition.”
“Then aren't we both in trouble?” I pointed out.
Yurio blinked, then laughed. “Yeah, I guess we're both fucked!”
A bit less than a year ago, he had no problem literally kicking my ass, and I was seriously intimidated by him, maybe as much as by Victor but in a totally different way. But today was another day that I realized how far I've come, and how much my life has changed. And while it's been kind of insane in some ways and I don't even recognize the old me anymore, I can definitely say I wouldn't change a thing.
