Myths and folklore of the 'Forest People’ - their historical background

The basic narrative material that forms the source of the vast body of Celtic mythology handed down to the present day is mainly Irish and Welsh mythology.

The earliest records of the Celtic language on the continent were found around 600-300 BCE, Celtic languages were spoken over a wide area from central to western Europe.

However, later, as the Roman Empire came to dominate, the Celtic view was declared heretical and the Celtic languages were doomed to disappear, with the old traditions of the 'forest people' now being passed on in a very limited part of the British Isles and in Brittany, France, where they escaped the influence of early Christians.

Nevertheless, the introduction of Christian and Latin culture into the British Isles during the early Christian period, and the literalisation of Celtic stories that had previously been passed down orally, led to various forms of alteration to the content of the stories. Such claims are widely accepted.

It is obvious that the copyists, Christian monks, removed Celtic and pagan echoes, tints and liveliness and modified them with Christian values.

After the Roman conquest, Germanic conquerors swept over Europe, the Franks, a powerful group, invaded Gaul and founded France, while in Britain, the Anglo-Saxons came and drove the Celts to the frontier.

「森の民」の神話と伝承 〜 その歴史的背景

現在まで伝承されてきた膨大なケルト神話群の源泉をなす基本的物語素材は、主にアイルランド神話とウェールズ神話である。

大陸でケルト語の最古の記録が見つかった前600年から前300年頃には、ケルト語はヨーロッパ中部から西部まで広範囲にわたって話されていた。

しかし、その後ローマ帝国の支配が及ぶにつれて、ケルト人の考え方は異端視され、ケルト諸語は消滅する運命をたどり、現在ではブリテン諸島のごく限られた一部とフランスのブルターニュ地方では、初期キリスト教徒の影響を免れて、「森の民」の古い伝承が受け継がれているという。

とはいえ、初期キリスト教時代に入り、ブリテン諸島にキリスト教とラテン文化が移入され、それまで口頭で伝承されたケルトの物語が文字化されたことにより、物語の内容にさまざまな形の改変が加えられたとの主張が広く認められている。

筆写にあたったキリスト教の修道僧たちがケルト的、異教的な響きや色合い、あるいは活気を削除し、キリスト教的な価値観で修飾をほどこしたことは明らかである。

ローマ帝国の征服後、ゲルマン人の征服者がヨーロッパを圧巻したが、その中でも強大な集団であるフランク人がカリアに侵攻してフランスを創立し、一方ブリテンでは、アングロ・サクソン人が来襲し、ケルト人をを辺境に追いやった。

The stone structure that stands today was probably erected on the site of an older, timber-built Celtic church in the 12th century, when Viking raids on Anglesey came to an end and life on the island became more stable and prosperous. Capel Lligwy’s setting probably wasn’t always so solitary – it’s likely that the chapel is the only remnant of a sizeable community that was eventually abandoned by its inhabitants. Hut Circles by Tony Via Flickr: Din Lligwy hut circle is an ancient village site near the east coast of Anglesey, close to the village of Moelfre, North Wales. Despite the mainly Roman finds, the origins of the settlement may well go back into the Iron Age and it was probably a small farming community.
