Phenomenal Woman Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou was born on April 4, 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri. Maya’s grandmother was a safe haven for her, where she lived mostly up until the age of 13 in Arkansas.  Around the age of 7, Maya was sexually assaulted by a friend of the family. After she confessed to her uncle about who did it, he was found dead shortly afterwards. The trauma of the occurrence led Maya to become mute for years. She was afraid her voice would cause more harm than good. A fellow teacher that visited her grandmother's store took Maya to the school library and told her to read all of the books in that room.

Maya began her exploration of literature and found delight in poetry especially. Her teacher told her she could only truly love poetry once she began to speak and experience the words. Maya began memorizing her favorite poems. Her favorite poet was Paul Dunbar. The title of her first publication, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” comes from the inspiration of his poem. The book is an autobiography about her childhood and is the first nonfiction best seller by an African American woman. It was poetry where Maya discovered the beauty and power of words, but life would show her ugliness and pain.

At the age of 14 Maya received a scholarship to California Labor School , where she studied drama and dance at night, while still attending high school during the day. At the age of 16 Maya gave birth to her son. After high school Maya went from a struggling teen mom to a fulfilled artist.  Around the age of 20 Maya was teaching dance and performing as a singer.  She is well known for her calypso dancing and in 1957 released her first album Miss Calypso. In 1977 Maya received an Emmy Award nomination for her work on the TV miniseries Roots. In 1978 she published one of her famous collections of poetry, “And Still I Rise”, which features the beloved poem “Phenomenal Woman”.

Maya became more politically engaged and began working with the civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. She spent years in Egypt and Ghana where she taught in the University department of Music and Drama, as well as a feature editor and journalist for the African Review. Another autobiographical work, “A Song Flung Up to Heaven'' (2002) explores her return from Africa to the U.S, and her struggles with the assassinations of two great human rights activists Malcom X and her friend Martin Luther King. MLK’s assasination occurred on her birthday, April 4,1968. For many years she would not celebrate her birthday and continued to send flowers to his widow Coretta Scott King. 

Maya became good friends with Oprah Winfrey, and Oprah hosted several great birthday celebrations, including a cruise for her 70th birthday. In 1998 Maya performed one of her most famous works for the inaugural ceremony of president Bill Clinton. The audio version of the  poem “On the Pulse of Morning” (1993) lead Maya to winning a Grammy Award for best spoken word album. In 2014, Maya Angelou passed away in her home in North Carolina. Her legacy will forever remain. The phenomenal woman Maya Angelou has made artistic impact as a poet, writer, activist, and entertainer. Maya was all of these.

[TILT] Dunbar's Number kao orijentir veličine timova

Koji broj ljudi je idealan za jedan tim? Kada kažemo da je tim prevelik i da je potrebno razdvojiti ga na manje entitete? Ako vjerujemo brojnim studijama i preporukama - idealan tim ima između 5 i 9 članova. Idealno 7. Od kuda te brojke? Temeljen je na dva često vezana pojma: Dunbar's Number i Miller's Law. Ta dva pojma često su nit vodilja prilikom organizacije tima tj. prilikom donošenja odluke o dodavanju članova u tim ili odluci o razdvajanju tima u dva manja. Dodavanje novog člana u tim vodi k smanjenju efikasnosti tima. U kraćem roku uvijek. Ako je i ovako velik broj članova tima - onda i trajno. Uzrok tome je nekoliko razloga: - novi član tima zahtijeva vrijeme za učenje i privikavanje na tim. Na tu aktivnost potrebno je potrošiti vrijeme najmanje jednog člana tima, često i više članova. To oduzima vrijeme od rada na produktu tog tima - svaki član tima unosi određenu entropiju u postojeću organizaciju. Ne postoji savršen sustav niti savršena osoba. Priroda ne predvidivosti tih elemenata povećava entropiju cijelog sustava - svaki član tima kreira neki oblik "komunikacijske veze" prema ostalim članovima tima. Dodavanje novog člana u tim eksponencijalno povećava broj komunikacijskih veza između članova tima

Dunbar's Number

Maksimalan broj prijatelja s kojima smo sposobni održavati stabilnu društvenu vezu je 150. To je broj do kojeg je došao u svojim istraživanjima britanski antropolog Robin Dunbar. Istraživanje je objavljeno u časopisu Journal of Human Evolution, 1992 godine . Teorija kaže da je broj društvenih veza koje možemo održavati direktna korelacija s veličinom našeg mozga - konkretno neocortexa. To je kognitivna granica ljudskog mozga kod većine osoba. Istraživanja su pokušala opovrgnuti tu teoriju . Međutim, bezuspješno. Teorija je i dalje validna obzirom na greške u istraživanjima . Taj broj, Dunbar je pronašao u mnogim organizacijama kao gornju granicu. U selima i naseljima, veličinama vojnih jedinica, itd. Isti efekt primijetile su i brojne u trenu kada su prešle 150 zaposlenih (Quartz, Gore, Facebook, itd) . Malcom Gladwell u kultnoj knjizi The Tipping Point opisuje društvene probleme koji se pojavljuju kada organizacija pređe 150 zaposlenih . Uz 150 što je naziva Dunbar's Number, Robin Dunbar je definirao još nekoliko veličina : - 1500 - broj osoba koje možemo prepoznati - 500 - broj osoba koje poznajemo - poznanici - 150 - broj prijatelja s kojima možemo održavati stabilnu društvenu vezu - 50 (nekada se navodi i 35) - bliski prijatelji - 15 - najuži krug prijatelja s kojima redovno komuniciramo - 5 - uža obitelj - 1 - ego (ja)

Dunbar's number nije broj iz uvoda - broj 7. Miller's Law preciznije definira tu vrijednost.

Amazon ima pravilo "dvije pizze". Jeff Bezos je rekao da tim može imati maksimalno članova koji se mogu nahraniti s dvije pizze . Jeff Sutherland, ko-kreator Scrum metodologije, kaže da broj članova u Scrum timu ne prelazi 7 . Quartz i Gore ograničavaju sektor organizacije na 150 djelatnika . Gore ide toliko daleko da u jednoj zgradi može biti maksimalno 150 djelatnika. U hijerarhijskim organizacijama ovo bi mogli smatrati smjernicama definiranja veličine timova: - sektor - 150 djelatnika - direkcija - 50 djelatnika - odjel - 15 djelatnika - tim - 7 djelatnika Također, tim se odnosi i na podređene i linijske suradnike. Vođeni tim brojem 7, broj podređenih ne bi trebao prelaziti 6 (ja i 6 podređenih u "stablu" - ukupno 7). Idealno bi bilo 5 podređenih ako se u kalkulaciju uzme i 1 nadređeni (ja, 5 podređenih, 1 nadređeni). Isto tako, broj linijskih suradnika ne bi trebao prelaziti 6 (ja i 6 suradnika u "liniji" - ukupno 7). Jednako idealno bi bilo da je 5 suradnika ako se uzme i nadređeni (ja, 5 suradnika, 1 nadređeni). U agilnoj organizaciji je vrlo jednostavno: produktni tim ne prelazi 7 djelatnika u timu. Naoružani ovim znanjem, razmislite kada poželite dodati novog člana u tim. Pogotovo kad prelazi granice Dunbar's Number i Miller's Law teorija.

THE PRICE OF THE TICKET WENDY JAMES PLEDGE CAMPAIGN ANNIVERSARY UPDATE Recollection and onwards…

A year ago today (19th February 2016) THE PRICE OF THE TICKET was released and entered the UK charts at No.15! THANK YOU to ALL of you who supported and loved this album! It was such a trip this album took! From my bedroom in NYC writing the songs, demoing them up, meeting with James Williamson (The Stooges guitarist - Raw Power) and deciding to start recording with him and getting the wonderful James Sclavunos (Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds) on drums. Jim (in his finest three-piece suit!) and I flew to Berkeley, CA and checked into a hookers roadside motel with nothing but a 4 channel TV screwed into the mustard wall, a plastic cup for a toothbrush, an ancient shower and an ice-machine in the forecourt! We rendezvous’d with James Williamson in the parking lot and made our way to Fantasy Recording Studios where we were joined by the legendary saxophonist from Fun House by The Stooges Steve Mackay (R.I.P.) and our great engineer Jesse Nichols. After this, back in NYC, the album progressed yet further and Lenny Kaye (The Patti Smith Group) came on board as the guitarist for the body of the album and of course my dear friend Glen Matlock (Sex Pistols) on bass. How wonderful we all felt as we recorded! It was the depths of winter in New York City and distinctly I remember being up and out on Broadway at 8am each morning, through feets-high snow making my way to the East Village and, in part, Brooklyn to record with Ivan Julian (Richard Hell & The Voidoids) engineering… it was freezing! sub-zero icy blasts tearing through the grid system of New York streets, I was bundled with my guitar, bags full of pedals and leads and mix notes and lyrics! Head down against the freezing air. Dressed in the studio in sweaters, two coats, a hat, gloves and holding onto an old portable iron radiator to try and unfreeze my hands! We worked long hours and inspired each other from start to finish. It was a wonderful musical time… I am so grateful to all these musicians for this experience in my life! I am also so grateful to my friends who helped me get through times when reaching the finishing line seemed nearly impossible! but I got there and much in part to their support and help. I am lucky! I flew back to Berkeley to mix with Jesse and once again my routine turned the clock inside out, up at 7am for coffee, walking to the studio through the pretty, sleepy streets of Berkeley with the pastel painted houses and front garden flower beds, starting to mix at 10am and finishing at midnight, getting a couple of beers from the 24 hour deli and back to the house I was staying in to make notes for the next day. As always in the studio, no matter how much time you have you never have enough and in the end Jesse and I pulled mammoth hours, we mixed two songs through the night on one occasion with Jesse going for a walk around the block at 3am to clear his ears and me just lying on the floor staring at the ceiling! We felt we were on a mission and we saw that mission completed and to success! Then!!! Pledge Music came into my life and we started this adventure that has proven so perfect for my music, for me, for you! I work closely with a team at Pledge, helped by so many people within this empire that Malcom Dunbar is building, in particular Barney, Luke, Paula and now Anna… my team! Thank you! I must also mention and thank Randy Boyd out there in California who has distributed my music across the world for quite a few years now, he is such a constant figure of reliability in my life and honest as the day is long and Ian J. Taylor with whom I built my website and who works tirelessly on keeping it up to the moment. I did the photograph for the album cover in Paris on a Sunday morning with my friend Kym Ellery, I’d just flown in from NYC and caught a taxi direct from Charles de Gaulle to Kym’s apartment on the Rue de Rivoli and we had coffee, caught up and then I lay down on her sofa and she got the snap! The rest is history… THE PRICE OF THE TICKET came out and you all embraced it! We gigged, the live band incorporating James Meynell, Jared Fisher, Louis Elliot, Bob Wilson and Richey Rose with James Sclavunos and myself. I met a lot of you, we all bonded I think and we made a firm foundation for 2017 and beyond! It continues! I’ve rounded out the 2016 campaign by commissioning a picture disc of TPOTT, signed and numbered individually, a proper collectors item. In a few days time I will be drawing a line under THE PRICE OF THE TICKET Pledge Campaign and re-opening THE WENDY JAMES NEW ALBUM 2017 campaign! Everything from TPOTT will carry over into the new campaign but it’s coming back bigger and better and more to find than ever and this time the campaign will follow through the whole process of the new album. I am on song 6 in my writing and I hope to have an album’s worth by April, then… gather musicians, book recording studios, and we’re off to the races again! I love you all! THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING YOU GIVE ME. It is love, it is friendship, it is generosity and it is loyalty. I hope I prove myself worthy of you all… Love and my best regards to you all, Wendy xxxx
