I saw a post earlier joking about how all the nines in the Mighty Nein will seem a little overplayed or heavy-handed to non-stream fans, which is true and amusing—like, have a bazillion nine-related things happen to a group called the Mighty Nein in a scripted show and it’s deeply heavy-handed foreshadowing; have it happen in a game of chance where the party name is a joke about dice rolls and you’ve got one of the coolest twists of coincidence in the world. (Side note, can’t wait to see how or if they even try to explain the party name in the TV show.)

BUT this also got me thinking more broadly about the challenges of adapting a game of chance into a TV show—how you keep those coincidences and lucky rolls, which are some of the very coolest moments in the campaign, from feeling like easy outs or lazy writing. Some of them seem easier than others—like, you don’t need to know how goddamn lucky the rolls were for the blueberry cupcake scene to be incredible, because it’s also such an incredibly clever beat—BUT. I’m thinking about Cad’s divine intervention in 140.

A zero-two. He rolled a zero-two. When fate said no, Caduceus said please. And it worked. Fate said okay, you can have this one. They’ve earned it. And it felt the way it did because it wasn’t just an inspired story moment. In a scripted show, whatever happens was always going to happen. But CR isn’t scripted. It was chance and fate and luck. It was a prayer that reached the Wildmother and that prayer was a d100.

And luckily for purposes of adaption, it’s a campaign—hell, an episode—that shows you the way divine intervention doesn’t always work. (Jester calling out for Artie, my heart.) So they’re well set up to keep it from feeling like a deus ex machina. But god. God. How do you replicate the feeling of that moment? Of knowing it‘s over, and then suddenly it isn’t?

watching Liam O'Brien do a spectacular fantasy!German for dozens of episodes has impressed me so much and yet nothing could have possibly prepared me for the man starting to sing, of all the songs, "Laurentia, liebe Laurentia mein"

the immersion! if you reached to the very back of my memory there'd be like ten folk songs there and this one, which we used to have to sing at 7:00 in the morning on choir retreats while doing squats for all the weekdays, would definitely be there. it's a silly ditty you've heard somehow exclusively in childhood, it's a little game song for children. If all else was tainted by your later life that song would probably survive, it's perfect

#it's also a really dumb song that you can use to make people learn the days of the week and probably the only one he knew but still!!!#like yeah the accent work is great #he's basically dead on on everything EXCEPT 'Scheiße' which is hilarious to me #but the overall mannerisms and stuff like the song is outstanding #and yeah the bar for foreigners doing a good german is... low #the bar for actual germans getting to play people that *feel* authentically german in foreign media is also low #but even outside of that i'm just delighted with caleb #critical role #liam o'brien #caleb widogast #the mighty nein #german

brief vent in your inbox- it's such a big pet peeve to me when people take things like the cat's paw scene as essek instantly being in love with/wanting to bang caleb when matt confirmed he's demisexual. like, we'd know how wrong it'd be to ship beau with a man, but people won't show the same respect for essek's demisexuality

you’re actually so correct. like essek was definitely manipulating caleb on actual purpose. he had his own reasons for sort of flirting that had nothing to do with attraction or lust or anything, he very plainly wanted to get in good with the nein to figure out how they worked and how to swing that to his advantage. to me he reads as a very. ‘use everything at my disposal’ sort of person, and what he had at his disposal was looks, charm, etc. also, caleb was trying to set up a honeypot which essek definitely clocked and was playing into. maybe he thought caleb genuinely wanted to fuck him or whatever, it doesn’t really matter, the point of playing along and doing their batshit mating ritual wasn’t oh wow love at first sight it was oh, jesus, these people have never had a relationship that wasn’t wildly toxic and now they’re trying to bait the other into thinking that they have their shit together and should be trusted with capital S Secrets.

this to me also reads as a symptom of the woobification of essek thelyss, where he goes all doe-eyed over caleb immediately when, at first, it’s canon that he absolutely hated awllll of them very much. caleb intrigued him, yes, but caleb did not compel him to make any genuine overtures of friendship or romance or anything of the kind until much later. this might stem from the need to make essek into the more submissive (in a personality sort of way) between the two in regards to their eventual relationship, which echoes back up along the timeline and makes people think that their relationship has always been like this (with caleb the self confident wondertherapist there to coach essek through unlearning a century of bullshit while essek simpers helplessly under caleb’s fucking electric blue gaze or whatever).

this interpretation of them is problematic even when it’s wayyy postcanon, but people look at this very inaccurate summary of their dynamic and go, ‘oh, shit, essek must have been hiding his inner softboy all along, this changes their whole story’ which, no! if he wasn’t a bad person who did bad things for bad reasons in the beginning (yes I know that this is oversimplification, it’s going to be ok I prommy), then his redemption holds no weight! what’s the point of a narrative about change and growth and building a better self if the character most central to this theme didn’t have to actually make anything new, he just had to scrape away a layer of mean exterior to get to the gooey domestic homemaker big sweater wearing pet name calling somftboi interior? no point. there is no point. fuck!

I love Beauyasha so much. I miss them so much.

The reunion gave me so much joy and now I'm in this weird happy but melancholy state. I love the Nein so much and I want more of them. And I especially want more of Beau and Yasha. If we get a Fjorester wedding one shot, I will be stoked. But then also give me the Beauyasha wedding too!

I'm really just hoping they keep doing these little reunions cause I love the Mighty Nein so much and seeing them makes me so happy.

Since obviously our boy Snufkin loves to travel anywhere and everywhere, so my crossover loving ass likes to think that he’d eventually run into other characters from all my favourite medias! Like just imagine how wholesome it would be!!

Like imagine during his travels he comes across a tombstone and puts a coin on it to respect the deceased and as he goes to turn around and be on his way. He bumpsinto the grounds keeper, who just happens to be a pre-mighty nein caduceus clay, who’d be more than happy to have tea with him. And both of them exchanging tea recipes, even if Snufkin won’t have the means to make it.

I can’t write anymore ironically or at least in a way that I can actually express, that isn’t just rambling but I promise you I’ve definitely imagined different scenarios and who he’d meet along the way but please tell me if you have any of your own!! I’d absolutely love to hear them!! But I hope you have a wonderful day/night/time
