Dude first of can I say I bloody love your writing second of all I just read that piece of reader and Jamie watching finding nemo and I had an idea. What if Jamie is watching when Harry met Sally for movie night with the team and it literally gives him the biggest mindblown lightbulb moment that he’s in love with the reader aka his best friend of over 10 years. The ending of it always makes me cry.
This is crazy did you read my other drabble where Jamie and reader watch when Harry Met Sally (I love that movie) But I LOVE THIS idea.
The boys filed into the rec room, the chairs already set up for the boys to be able to watch whatever movie Ted picked out for tonight. You were in there, finishing setting up the projector cause lord knows that if you didn't do it Ted would never be able to figure it out.
"And there!" You finished, throwing your hands up in success. "All you have to do is press play."
"Well, now, thank you (Y/N), you've been a big help," Ted grinned. "Alright now, folks! Let's file in, get your seat we're gonna get started soon!"
"(Y/N)!" Jamie called over to you. You looked over at him and smiled and Jamie's heart about stopped. Sure he was in love with you. You were brilliant. But it wasn't like he would ever say anything and ruin the friendship you had. "Over here."
"Sorry, Jamie, I got work to do, won't be able to stay tonight," you told him walking towards the door. "But I'll see you tomorrow, yeah?"
You walked out of the door. Some of the team pat him on the shoulder sympathetically as they walked by. Was it really that. obvious? How could you not see it?
Jamie elected to slump down next to Sam and Isaac instead, unable to keep the pout off his face.
"It is alright, Jamie," Sam comforted, nudging him. "She's just busy tonight."
"Yeah! Anyone with eyes can see she's into you," Isaac agreed.
"Thanks, lads, but I think it's hopeless," Jamie grumbled.
"Alright, greyhounds, now!" Ted clapped his hands getting the attention up at the front. "Tonight we're watching a movie about friendship, and love, and how friendship and love walk a very dangerous line. But all you need is that one push to spill your guts."
"Fucks sake," Jamie muttered, adjusting his seat.
"And without further ado, When Harry met Sally!" Ted scurried out from in front of the projector. Jamie rolled his eyes and settled in for another rom com that he didn't enjoy because all he could think about is (Y/N),
But what surprised him was how great the movie was. The writing, the flirting, it was all so comparable to his own life. By the end of it, he was leaning forward in his seat as Billy Crystal rushed down the streets of New York to find Meg Ryan.
"I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible."
Jamie felt him mind racing as he listened to that line. He thought about you and the butterflies that followed him around whenever you were near. The smile that lit up the room. The laugh that could save lives. He wanted to be with you and he wanted to be with you right now.
Just as the lights turned on, Jamie shot up out of his chair and raced out of the room. The rest of the boys cheered as he did.
Ted turned to Beard. "I reckon you owe me 10 pounds."
Meanwhile, Jamie was rushing to your room. When he arrived, he knocked fiercely on the door, not letting up until you opened it.
"Jamie? What on earth-"
"I love you," he blurted out. You eyes widened, trying to take in what he was saying. "I love you. Like I love the way you smile, I love the way you talk, I love the way you always seem to know what I want for lunch even though I don't know what I want for lunch."
"Jamie wha-"
"I love you," He repeated. "You know my hair dye brand, you know that I like the temperature in my house to be 18 degrees. Not 20, not 15, 18 degrees. I love you (Y/N)."
You were speechless. You couldn't form a thought into a word if you wanted to. You just looked back and forth between Jamie's eyes trying to decipher if this was a joke.
"(Y/N), I love you and when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you-"
"Want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible..." You finished the quote, smiling softly.
"I know this is sudden, and whatever, but I just... I need you to know."
"Jamie?"
"Yeah?"
"Will you kiss me now?"
"God, yes."
And he did. He kissed you. He kissed you quite a lot actually.

Hey! Just wondering if you could suggest some romantic/rom-com movies💖
Have a great day❤️🌼
Oh my goodness, I certainly can!! Thank you, bby! 💖💖
10 of my favorite romantic comedies:
(In no particular order.)
1. 10 Things I Hate About You
An absolute perfect movie. Dialogue, casting, story, romance, Heath Ledger, Shakespeare references, what more could a literary inclined girl want?
2. A Cinderella Story
Another gift from the early 2000s. Is it cheesy? Sometimes. Is it adorable? Absolutely.
3. He's Just Not That Into You
Hilarious, sometimes heartbreaking, ensemble cast, but the endings for each couple are undoubtedly satisfying. Plus, my favorite rewind moment of all time:
4. Crazy, Stupid Love
Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Steve Carrell, Josh Groban cameo. Need I say more? (But it will also unexpectedly grip your heart with profound, tender moments.)
5. While You Were Sleeping
One of my favorite Sandra Bullock rom coms, of which there are many. (Honorary mentions: The Proposal, Practical Magic, Two Weeks Notice, and Miss Congeniality, though it's not really a rom com is one of my favorite movies in existence.)
6. You've Got Mail
A classic of classics in rom com history. Meg Ryan at her best, Tom Hanks at his. She's a small, independent bookstore owner. He's essentially Barnes & Noble, coming in to disrupt New York with corporate America.
7. Mrs. Winterbourne
A forgotten '90s Brendan Fraser must-see movie. He's the "rich playboy" type, she's scrappy and resourceful, pregnant by her deadbeat ex-boyfriend, and pretending to be the widow of Fraser's twin brother, who recently died in a train accident.
8. Crazy Rich Asians
Based on a book, top-tier casting, bad ass mother-in-law, bad ass heroine, a classy, handsome, Good Man™️ hero? Sign me TF up.
9. 13 Going on 30
Easily Jennifer Garner's best movie, but also Mark freakin' Ruffalo. They're adorable together, and this one's a classic in its own right, full of heart, back-stabbing bitches, and 80s music references.
10. My Big Fat Greek Wedding
It's one of the best, folks. Also one of the most quotable movies in movie history lol. As a kid, I remember really identifying with Toula, who feels too plain, too big, too "frump girl."
But Ian never saw her that way. He genuinely laughs at her jokes. He's patient with her and sees her beauty, inside and out. He also deals with a lot of crap from her family in order to be with her, with all the grace and gentlemanly poise a guy could have.
And Toula learns to love herself, fall in love for the first time, and challenges every expectation of her family to do so.
I have many, many more, but these are just a few of my favorites. What's yours?
Don't see it on this list? Drop it in the comments! 💋

esteemed trungles, i come with an important question. What is the best romcom to watch in winter?
ESTEEMED omg incredible. I don't think I've ever been esteemed before, so I'll do my best to live up to it.
SO I'm a little late on this question for Holiday rom-coms, but it's still winter here right now, and I love rom-coms. In no particular order:
The Holiday (2006) - Kate Winslet! Jack Black! Cameron Diaz! Jude Law! John Krasinski for some reason (he shows up for like three minutes)! Kathryn Hahn (also in the same scene as John Krasinski)! Also there's a little, itty-bitty A Knight's Tale reunion because Rufus Sewell shows up and so does Shannyn Sossamon, which I find to be very sweet. Jack Black is cute as Christmas and hot as breakfast in this movie, and he somehow did this straightforwardly sweet rom-com AND Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny in the same year. The man has RANGE. You get two romances in this movie, and I think the Kate Winslet one is much more of a high-budget Silver Screen romance while the Cameron Diaz one is much more a Hallmark Channel romance, which I think is great because I love both kinds of romances.
When Harry Met Sally (1989) - This movie is iconic, and I love it to bits. I always have it saved to my phone so I can watch it on literally every plane ride just in case I get stressed out. Meg Ryan is incredible in it as a neurotic and incredibly self-assured woman who develops a friendship with Billy Crystal's character over the course of about a dozen years. Bruno Kirby and Carrie Fisher play some hilarious supporting characters. This movie is also lovely in that the most dramatic character arc belongs to the male love interest. Like, yes, Meg Ryan's character also grows, but there's no change to her world view or her wants and desires because she's not hurting anyone with the way she navigates those things, and Billy Crystal's character grows into someone you could imagine having lunch with, a far cry from when we first meet him. It's also very well-written. I downloaded the script just so I could pick it apart and learn from it.
Single All the Way (2021) - KATHY NAJIMY AND JENNIFER COOLIDGE ARE BOTH IN THIS MOVIE. I don't know what I was expecting, but this holiday rom-com charmed the thermal socks off me. Michael Urie and Philemon Chambers play best friends who fake a relationship so Michael's family will stop badgering him about there being no romance in his life. It's a fake dating movie, and it is also a delightful subversion of the Hallmark romance. Michael Urie escapes his big city life back to his small hometown where he meets an extremely hunky local spinning instructor (lol) played by Luke McFarlane, who is a literal mainstay of many actual, literal Hallmark romance movies. It's great. I enjoyed it immensely.
Moonstruck (1987) - Cher and Nicolas Cage star in this movie, and it's sort of difficult to describe. It's very funny, and it's heightened by how every single actor plays their character with the seriousness of a prestige drama. Olympia Dukakis and John Mahoney are also in this, and they're both delightful. I still occasionally yell, "I lost my hand! I lost my bride!!!" out loud at random intervals in the year. Keeps my loved ones on their toes.
While You Were Sleeping (1995) - This movie is a charmer and a half! Sandra Bullock stars as a lonely woman who works at the L in Chicago who falls in love with one of the passengers. One day, he falls victim to an attempted mugging and falls onto the tracks. Our heroine saves his life, but he winds up in a coma. A series of misunderstandings leads his entire family to believe that she's his fiancée, and polite shenanigans ensue (except in the case of one testicle-inspection, which might be regarded as pretty impolite, but it's very sweet in context). I also find Bill Pullman extremely blandsome and regular-looking to the point of being sincerely erotic. I don't know how this happened.
And I think that covers my wintry rom-coms! I watch all of them year-round, but these ones all vaguely take place in the winter-time and sometimes have a little bit to do with the holidays season.

5 Book Recs Based on Your Favorite Holiday Rom-Com!❄️💝
The holiday season is special for many reasons, but one of my favorites is watching all of the cheesy and sweet holiday rom-coms every year. It always warms my heart and reminds me just how filled with love everyone is this time of year (unless you’re Scrooge). To celebrate this season, we tapped into our inner romantic to provide book recs for those of you who may have already finished your yearly holiday movie binge!
If you like You’ve Got Mail (1998), then you might like I Hope This Doesn’t Find You!
The intense and passionate internet romance that blossoms between Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks’ characters in You’ve Got Mail is one for the ages. It sets the benchmark for enemies-to-lovers romances as the two eventually discover that the person they’ve fallen for is the very person they’ve grown to despise. Fans of this burning romance will love Ann Liang’s newest novel, I Hope This Doesn’t Find You, a snarky academic rivals-to-lovers story that you won’t be able to put down!
If you like Single All the Way (2021), then you might like The Feeling of Falling in Love!
Single All the Way is a hilarious queer holiday rom-com centered around the chaos that ensues when your family is determined to set you up with your bff/roommate. And while this takes friends-to-lovers to a whole new level, maybe, just maybe, your family has a point. Fans of Single All the Way will be head over heels for Mason Deaver’s The Feeling of Falling in Love, a new kind of love story about bad decisions we make and the people (aka your roommate/reluctant wedding date) who help get us back on the right path.
If you like Happiest Season (2020), then you might like What a Desi Girl Wants!
One of the newest holiday movies on the list, this charming sapphic holiday rom-com starring Kristen Stewart is about wanting your family’s acceptance while staying true to yourself. Fans of Happiest Season will love Sabina Khan’s What a Desi Girl Wants, a brilliant love story filled with nuanced family dynamics and a sprinkling of sabotage that’s sure to set your queer (or not so queer) heart ablaze.
If you like The Holiday (2006), then you might like Stars in Their Eyes!
The Holiday, featuring an all-star cast of Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, and Jack Black, is one of the best meet-cute holiday romances of all time. The film not only puts you in the holiday spirit but also has heartwarming storylines that will make you believe in love again. Fans of The Holiday and quirky meet-cutes will fall hard and fast for Stars in Their Eyes from Jessica Walton and Aśka, a one-of-a-kind YA graphic novel that celebrates the excitement of meeting someone special for the first time.
If you like When Harry Met Sally (1989), then you might like Rosewood!
When Harry Met Sally might take the crown for one of the most famous rom-com movies of all time, the holiday celebrations in the film always leave me feeling so festive, but if I’ve learned one thing from this well-known romance, it’s that you should always, ALWAYS, follow your heart. Fans of this quirky love story will absolutely adore Sayantani DasGupta’s witty and bright Rosewood, a romantic and funny retelling of Sense & Sensibility set at a Bridgerton-esque summer camp, where Elia must choose to follow her carefully laid plans or let a certain someone derail them.

What Happens Later Review: A Rom-Com of a Certain Age
What Happens Later is a coming-of-age romantic comedy about people of a certain different age. Ryan gives a wonderful turn as Willa. This is also the best performance of Duchovny’s career.
Let's say I really love this movie.

By Matt Grobar
EXCLUSIVE: Sheryl Lee Ralph (Abbott Elementary), Timothy V. Murphy (Appaloosa) and Bruce Greenwood (The Fall of the House of Usher) have boarded The Fabulous Four, a new comedy from Bleecker Street, which has entered production in Georgia under an Interim Agreement from SAG-AFTRA.
The actors join an ensemble that also includes Susan Sarandon, Bette Midler, and Megan Mullally, as previously announced. Ralph takes over the role of Sissy Spacek, who was attached as of last fall but was forced to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. Bleecker Street nabbed North American rights to the pic last October and will release the film in U.S. theaters in 2024. UTA Independent Film Group and CAA Media Finance arranged the financing and brokered the deal for U.S. rights, with Sierra/Affinity repping international sales.
Written and directed by Jocelyn Moorhouse, the Cannes prize-winner best known for her Kate Winslet pic The Dressmaker, the film follows three life-long friends (Sarandon, Mullally, and Ralph) who travel to Key West, Florida to be bridesmaids in a surprise wedding of their college girlfriend Marilyn (Midler). Once there, sisterhoods are rekindled, the past rises up again in all its glory, and there are enough sparks, drinks and romance to change all their lives in ways they never expected.
Richard Barton Lewis’ Southpaw Entertainment is producing alongside Lauren Hantz of Hantz Motion Pictures.
An icon of stage and screen, Ralph has won an Emmy and numerous other accolades for her portrayal of kindergarten teacher Barbara Howard on Abbott Elementary, the ABC mockumentary that has emerged as one the most popular scripted series on linear. The show, created by and starring Quinta Brunson, was renewed for a third season in January but only recently returned to the writers’ room, following the conclusion of the WGA strike. Otherwise perhaps best known for her Tony-nominated turn as Deena Jones in Broadway’s Dreamgirls, Ralph has also been seen in Mistress with Robert de Niro, To Sleep with Anger with Danny Glover, The Distinguished Gentlemen with Eddie Murphy, and Sister Act 2 with Whoopi Goldberg, along with such series as Moesha and Ray Donovan.
Most recently recurring on Law & Order: Organized Crime and ABC’s The Company You Keep, Murphy previously reprised his role in Uni’s comedy MacGruber on the same-name Peacock series. Other recent credits for the actor on the TV side include S.W.A.T., Snowpiercer, Westworld, and True Detective, to name just a few. Additional feature credits include In Full Bloom, The Lone Ranger, and National Treasure: Book of Secrets.
Greenwood puts in a stellar turn as Fortunato Pharmaceuticals CEO Roderick Usher in Netflix’s Edgar Allen Poe-inspired miniseries The Fall of the House of Usher from Mike Flanagan, which bowed on the platform earlier this month. He also recently starred in the Fox medical drama The Resident, which ran for six seasons, and will soon appear in fantasy pic The Invisibles with Tim Blake Nelson and Gretchen Mol, among other projects.
At this year’s Toronto Film Festival, Bleecker Street nabbed U.S. rights to James Hawes’ One Life, starring Anthony Hopkins, and the starry British comedy Fackham Hall, which goes into production next year. The company also locked down UK rights, alongside Elysian Film Group and Anonymous Content, to Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron. Upcoming releases include the Meg Ryan-helmed rom-com What Happens Later, coming to theaters November 3, which she leads with David Duchovny, and Sara Bareilles and Jessie Nelson’s Waitress: The Musical, out December 7 with Fathom Events.

Bros
If you really want to enjoy Nicholas Stoller’s BROS (2022, Peacock+), skip the first scene. There’s no information in it you won’t get later, but what you do get is Billy Eichner’s character, Bobby, doing his podcast and whining incessantly. I know that’s part of his schtick as a comic, but at the start of an almost two- hour rom com, it can be a turn-off. The second scene is a funny awards ceremony in which he’s named “Best Cis White Gay Man” and delivers a speech about his passion, rescuing LGBTQ history. That not only gives Bobby a sympathetic goal, it also does a better job of setting up the film's comic tone, its satirical yet appreciative approach to gay culture. From there, the story of how Bobby and frustrated, heteronormative gay lawyer Aaron (Luke Macfarlane) navigate their inner conflicts to find love works as a gay WHEN HARRY MET SALLY (1989), with Eichner as a hotter Meg Ryan. There’s a lot of material in this film. I think the task of making one of the first studio-backed gay romantic comedies made Eichner and co-writer Stoller want to include everything they could. But a lot of the material is spot on, particularly Eichner’s misadventures with on-line dating and a silly, sexy first-time bedroom scene for the two stars. The relationship develops believably and plays up the film’s political stance in the differences between the two characters. Both Eichner and MacFarlane get to demonstrate more range than they have in their television work, and in the midst of all the comedy, each has some beautifully human moments. The strong supporting cast doesn’t always get as much to do as they could, but Harvey Fierstein, Bowen Yang, Amanda Bearse, Jim Rash and TS Madison have their moments. There are a lot of reasons the film under-performed at the box office: bad timing, its length, that opening scene, the wrong branding, shallow gay critiques from people who don’t believe MacFarlane could fall for someone who looks like Eichner (thereby missing the entire point of the relationship) and, most maddeningly, down-voting on the IMDb from a bunch of bigoted snowflakes afraid that the success of a gay romcom might make their microscopic sex organs fall off. On the plus side, it’s been doing well on demand.

Favorite Otps/Pairings: Harry Burns & Sally Albright
(When Harry Met Sally)
"I've been doin' a lot of thinkin', and the thing is, I love you. What? I love you. How'd you expect me to respond to this? How about you love me, too? How about I'm leaving? Doesn't what I said mean anything?Sorry, Harry. I know it's New Year's Eve, I know you're feeling lonely, but you just can't show up, say you love me and expect that to make it all right. It doesn't work this way. Well, how does it work? I don't know, but not this way. Then how about this way?I love that you get cold when it's 71 out. I love that it takes you 1 1/2 hours to order a sandwich. I love that you get a crinkle here when you look at me like I'm nuts. I love that after I spend a day with you I smell your perfume on my clothes. And I love that you are the last person I wanna talk to before I go to sleep at night. And it's not because I'm lonely or because it's New Year's Eve. I came cause when you realize you wanna spend the rest of your life with someone you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible. You see? That is just like you, Harry. You say things like that and you make it impossible for me to hate you! And I hate you, Harry. I really hate you.I hate you. What does this song mean? My whole life, I don't know. "Should auld acquaintance be forgot" - should we forget old acquaintances? Or if we forget them, should we remember them? Which is not possible cause we already forgot 'em! Maybe it just means we should remember that we forgot them, or something. Anyway, it's about old friends. The first time we met we hated each other. No, I hated you. The second time we met, you didn't even remember me. I did, too!I remembered you. The third time we met we became friends. We were friends for a long time. And then we weren't. And then we fell in love.Three months later we got married. It only took three months."

𝚋𝚊𝚌𝚔𝚐𝚛𝚘𝚞𝚗𝚍 .
nellie van der linden has always been the baby of the famous van der linden clan , multimillionaire owners of several luxury hotel chains . although it’s been many long years since four-year-old nellie’s first day of kindergarten , when she bawled for two hours straight after the nanny dropped her off , in her parents’ eyes , she’s still that clinging , crying child . sensitive , fragile , in need of protecting . her whole childhood , she was coddled and doted on , given the very best that money could buy .
it’s a wonder that with such a spoiled upbringing , nellie didn’t turn out to be a complete brat . instead , she blossomed into a gentle , quiet young woman , a hopeless romantic with a love of rooftop flower gardens and nora ephron movies . she took easily to the rules and structure of upper society , mastering etiquette and charming the older generation with a demure smile .
when it comes to her own generation , however , nellie often finds herself floundering . there doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to the way they act , and oftentimes a sarcastic quip or sly innuendo will fly right over her head . over the years , she’s learned to fit in by keeping quiet and listening . if she agrees when asked a question , and laughs when told a joke , most people won’t catch her out for the impostor she feels like she is at times .
she has an eye for beauty , and loves to surround herself with things that are aesthetically pleasing and harmonious . this was one of the things that drew her to architecture – she was a natural at capturing perspective and scale in a simple pencil sketch , and dreamed of creating something as permanent and as beautiful as the ampitheatres of rome , or the gothic cathedrals of france , or the intricate mosques of the early ottoman empire .
once she graduated , however , her parents found her work as an architect for their luxury hotel chains , and she quickly learned her love of architecture did not extend to commercial properties designed to maximize profit , or working with engineers who pragmatically struck down and simplified all her beautiful designs . she knows they roll their eyes behind her back , and she hears the whispers of brat and spoiled and nepotism . but she’s seen enough romantic comedies to know they’ll be eating their words someday , when she proves herself and designs something beautiful .
nellie falls in love easier than falling asleep . she seems someone beautiful on the street and imagines them as the love interest of the rom com of her life . she dreams of the love she’s seen in movies ; the automatic understanding and connection of a soulmate , the love that makes life easier , brighter , softer . she saves pictures of wedding dresses on pinterest and bookmarks links to engagement rings . and yet , she can’t seem to find the one , her other half , the love of her life .
three times now , she’s said yes to a proposal , eager to finally begin life as someone in love . and yet , three times now , that imagined life has crumbled to dust in her hands . ( wanted connections !!! ) whether they weren’t as perfect as she’d imagined them to be , or whether they tire of her quirks and idiosyncrasies , at the end of the day , she finds herself restless , dissatisfied , burnt out and longing to be at home , alone , in comfy pjs , watching heath ledger serenade julia stiles from the bleachers .
𝚑𝚎𝚊𝚍𝚌𝚊𝚗𝚘𝚗𝚜 .
it’s not diagnosed but nellie is autistic ! thrives on structure and rules and order , struggles with social cues , often feels out of place , tends to be seen as innocent or ‘ quirky ’ by allistic people , needs a lot of time to rest & recharge after any large social event … the list goes on . she’s learned to be pretty good at masking , but it really drains her :( + some more common symptoms of autism in women if anyone’s interested !
this girl LOVES rom coms . there’s something about a guaranteed , predictable happy ending that she just finds so soothing and comforting . something about someone seeing you for all your flaws and still chasing you down in an airport to confess their love .
she’s also a big ass lesbian smh . someone pls tell her that maybe the reason she hasn’t found her dream man yet is bc he doesn’t exist
rumour is that her parents paid her ex-fiancés to propose to her … and well , it’s not 100% false . they didn’t pay them outright , but a discreet conversation along with well-timed gift of an expensive watch or fancy new sports car never hurts . nellie has no idea , and it would break her heart if she knew . she adores her parents , overbearing though they may be .
says she wants kids but really the idea terrifies and disgusts her . children are loud , messy , unpredictable , and nellie likes her peace too much to want to lose that anytime soon … or anytime at all
u already know this bitch adores dr taylor alison swift
she has a pet tortoise named hamish who she’s had since she was 8 years old and is the most spoiled pet tortoise in nyc . has free roam all over her penthouse & she’s hired a maid exclusively to follow him around and clean up after him .
nellie is sweet but this bitch do be spoiled tho !!! don’t ask her how much a banana costs . she aint got no sense of money
𝚙𝚕𝚊𝚢𝚕𝚒𝚜𝚝 .
mirrorball ( taylor swift ) : i’m still a believer but i don't know why / i’ve never been a natural , all i do is try , try , try
why am i like this ? ( orla gartland ) : maybe i’m an old soul trapped in a young body / maybe you really don’t want me there at your birthday party / i’ll be there in the corner , thinking right over / every single word of the conversation we just had
when ( dodie ) : am i the only one wishing life away ? / never caught up in the moment , busy begging the past to stay
weird ( lizzy mcalpine ) : maybe i’m weird , or maybe i’m off the wall / but maybe it’s weirder not to have dreamed at all
four ( sleeping at last ) : i’m stuck swimming in shadows down here / it’s been forever since i came up for air / flashlight in hand , determined to find / authenticity only poetry could even begin / to try to describe

Welcome to my second year-end list for 2022, a 'favourite films' recap for my followers. A reminder that my year-end list reflects the best of the films I saw this year, not necessarily films that came out this year. And while I made terrible decisions in many departments during 2022 (academic, romantic, etc.), I occasionally employed time management skills. As a result, I watched fewer movies than I would have liked. However, there were still quite a few standouts, and I will honour that in this wrap-up list.
1. Early Summer (1951)
Any reflection on growing up and moving away from what you once took for granted was, without fail, going to hit different this year. Early Summer is, however, one of the best films I have ever seen. I cried during the last scenes of this movie. Setsuko Hara delivers my favourite performance of hers, the script is incredible, the shots are gorgeous—there isn't a front on which this film fails. I consider Ozu one of the greatest directors of all time, and this is why. (I am baffled that Tokyo Story is his most beloved work when it's my least favourite of his, but I suppose everyone is entitled to their own opinion.) The quiet, hopeful joy to be found in everyday living is the focus of this film, and it's a wonderful thing to behold. By far my favourite film of the year.
2. Fanny and Alexander (1982)
When I got into Ingmar Bergman's films, my mother warned me not to watch this film (which is a theatrical adaptation of a miniseries) until I was thirty. She claimed it haunted her, and recounted the scenes with more detail than I've ever seen her remember from a movie. Nothing could've made me more curious. This year, despite decidedly not thirty, I watched Fanny and Alexander. Immediately after watching it, I took to Letterboxd: "it's nice to know that everything Ingmar Bergman ever made has the capacity to land like a gut punch and render me speechless." It's a masterpiece in its rendering of a family, and spares not even the most haunting detail.
3. The Big City (1963)
An instant classic, at least to my mind. This film is compelling and compassionate, presenting overlapping portraits of a family that refuses to be defined by their best or worst moments. The writing is purposeful, layered, and makes great use of every minute. The cinematography acts in service to the story, framing key moments beautifully and showcasing the talents of the primary actors, who do an excellent job. It's a movie about a changing world, but one that reflects the everlasting fidelity to the old one. Hats off to Satyajit Ray—and the Letterboxd mutual who recommended it to me.
4. Hour of the Wolf (1968)
Is it any surprise that there are two films directed by Ingmar Bergman on this list? Hour of the Wolf is a near-masterpiece. For any other director, it would have been their crowning jewel. Max von Sydow and Liv Ullmann have always been my favourites of Bergman's regulars, and their performances here are absolutely brilliant. The script is haunting and cerebral, the sense of atmosphere is weighty and profound, and the last five minutes of this movie are some of the best ever made. Bravo! Don't watch at night.
5. Double Indemnity (1944)
I'd been meaning to watch this film forever, and it was well worth the weight. The lead actors pull their weight, the story maintains tension and forward motion, and the camerawork is something beautiful. If Billy Wilder really didn't intend the style as he claimed, he was the luckiest bastard alive. Occasionally funny, consistently intelligent, and always entertaining, Double Indemnity was a highlight of my year.
Lightning Round
Number of times I paused my Criterion subscription to focus on school: two
Director I begrudgingly came to enjoy more than I meant to: Jean-Luc Godard
