HAPPY WORLD CROC DAY
It's June 17th, world crocodile day, a day to appreciate these amazing yet endangered animals. They are my personal favourite group of animals period and just endlessly fascinating to me, both those we have today and those that lived in the ancient past. Tho I'm no professional by any means, I strive to learn about them and spread this knowledge. So here's some photos, art and skeletals of fossil crocs (using the term rather liberally I know). Feel free to drop your favourites in the reblogs, doesn't matter if extinct or not.

Kappa, Nema, and Jean were pouring over the map that Marigold had gotten them.
"It's alright." Kappa and Jean said in tandem. Kappa coughed and motioned for Jean to speak.
Tumblr media
[Jean]
"Lacunosa was full of humans with very traditional beliefs. There's a story in that village that a monster comes up from the Giant Chasm every night to eat the townspeople, and that's why they shut themselves in at night."
Tumblr media
[Nema]
"Eeesh. There's not a actually a monster in the chasm though, right?"
Tumblr media
[Jean]
"Ha! As if!" Jean laughed. Morelet, who was standing next to Marigold, chuckled heartily.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Morelet]
"Just beware the paranoid boomers!"
Tumblr media
[Nema]
"Eugh, 'boomers' is such a dated term."
Everyone laughed besides Marigold, who only flinched. Not at the horrible boomers joke, but at the repeated mention of monsters. She had the phone call with Nigel and the recent news broadcast playing over and over in their mind.
Kappa was headed towards the Giant Chasm. The Giant Chasm housed Unova's largest Wishing Star. Wishing Stars around the region were violently exploding. Nema is going to be near a ticking time bomb.
Tumblr media
[Marigold]
"Kappa." Marigold said sternly.
Kappa's face dropped.
Tumblr media
[Kappa]
"I'm going." Kappa spat stubbornly. "I've been through too much today to stop now. All because of some stupid rock-"

BOTD: Morelet's Seedeater
Tumblr media
Photo: Oliver Komar
"This tiny finch is abundant in Mexico and Central America, but it has had a checkered history in our area. In extreme southern Texas, the seedeater was common as recently as the 1940s, but by the mid-1970s it had all but vanished north of the border. In recent years it has reappeared in small numbers in the Falcon Dam area. Flocks of Morelet's Seedeaters feed low in rank weedy places, calling to each other in soft voices. They may roost in tall marsh growth along the Rio Grande. The surprisingly clear whistled song of the male is not often heard in our area."

He doesn't seem keen on answering the first question at the moment, so he addresses the second. "I wouldn't be comfortable with something that didn't cover my full head, so I would never settle for a mask. And something made of leaves would...decay, and would thus need frequent replacing. This sock is easy to put on, it covers my full head, and being human-made, it's durable." He explains.
"We've offered to make a false skull for him to wear in the past." The Smeargle speaks up. "But...well, I shouldn't speak for you, Nobone."
"Hm...yes, they have. But I see that as hiding from what happened to me, and I have no intention of doing that. This...is who I am now, and it matters." He lets out a sigh, and doesn't elaborate further.

May 18, 2022 - Morelet's Seedeater (Sporophila morelleti)
Found from southern Texas through eastern Mexico to Panama, these seedeaters live in grasslands, savannas, and shrublands. They eat mostly seeds and insects, usually foraging in flocks in low vegetation, or sometimes on the ground, in bushes, or in low trees. Frequently breeding in small colonies, females probably build the small cup-shaped nests from grass, small twigs, rootlets, plant fibers, and other materials in shrubs or large weeds. While females likely incubate the eggs alone, both parents feed the chicks.

Turtle Frog: The only species in its genus, this frog lives in the arid climates of Western Australia. In order to hide from the dry conditions, they burrow into the sandy dirt to take shelter. However, while most burrowing frogs dig in using their hind legs, these frogs use their powerful forelimbs to dig forwards. After springtime rain, a male and female will select each other as mates before digging deep underground (sometimes over a metre!) They spend several months together in this burrow before breeding, then lay their eggs in place. The young fully metamorphosize within the eggs and emerge as full-fledged froglets.
Morelet's Tree Frog: Once common in the pet trade, their wild populations are declining due to the chitrid fungus and habitat destruction. Because of this, they’re officially listed as critically endangered and are possibly extirpated from Southern Mexico, only remaining in patches of Central America. They lay their green-tinged eggs over water, letting the tadpoles drop into it when they hatch. When breeding, the female chooses the male based on the length and frequency of his call.

So something that a lot of people are seemingly unaware off is the "rostral boss" or simply face bump seen in some American Crocodiles (Crocodylus acutus). I've seen it a few times now that folks are really surprised to see it, so I think its worth sharing a bit on that and its importance to understanding how crocs came to America.
For starters, the rostral boss is a large bump that is located on the snout of some crocodiles just before the eyes, covering the back of the nasal bone and areas of the prefrontals, lacrimals and parts of the frontal bone. This boss, among modern crocs, is most prominent in the American Crocodile. Sidenote, I know its a pain, but here American Crocodile (capitalized C) means Crocodylus acutus. When meaning the crocodiles of America, I'll use Neotropic crocodiles. Also tho I'm usually liberal with the term, here crocodile specifically refers to the genus Crocodylus. Good? Good. Anyhow, this kinda gives them a look thats been likened to the Triassic phytosaurs and makes individuals with said bump really distinct. Below are some pictures which show different indivudals with less and more pronounced bosses.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now this feature is not unique to American Crocodiles (again meaning C. acutus, I know the terminology is confusing), but can be seen in at least some other neotropic Crocodylus species. Now I've yet to see images of either Morelet's or Orinoco Crocodiles with the same and they don't appear to have been recognized with them by older literature, but there are some Cuban Crocodile skulls also showing a slight boss. If you look at the two photos below, you can see an American Crocodile skull on the left and several skulls of Cuban Crocodiles on the right (from the Quaternary Sawmill Sink on the Bahamas). It's comparably subtle in the Cubans, but there is a boss present in these skulls.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The fun part is that this isn't just a random trait that these crocodiles got out of nowhere. No, the rostral boss is actually a trait thats likely to be ancestral to ALL Crocodylus species of the Neotropics (so again, Morelet's, Cubans, Orinocos and Americans). The oldest known Crocodylus species from the Americas is Crocodylus falconensis from the Pliocene of Venezuela. And guess what, it had that very same bump on its face.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But that's not where the trail ends. No. Back in the 1940s a crocodile was found in Miocene sediments of Northern Africa that had a similar bump. Meaning on the other side of the Atlantic. This was largely ignored at the time, despite the similarities to American and Cuban Crocodiles and their rostral bosses being known back then. But more recently, scientists have taken a second look at this species, Crocodylus checchiai, and concluded that it is a likely ancestor to today's Neotropic crocodiles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We already knew that African crocodiles (Nile Crocodiles and Sacred Crocodiles) were more closely related to Neotropic crocodiles than to Australasian ones (like Salties, Freshies and Muggers), but this essentially provided some really solid evidence for how crocs got to America. Sometime between the Miocene and Pliocene, Crocodylus checchiai (or a relative or descendent) swam across the Atlantic and landed in the area around the Caribbean, spreading and giving rise to the four true crocodiles that still inhabit the region. Which I personally think is really cool.

This one's for Morelet, Nema, and Marigold:
You all seem to love Kappa very much, taking all of her... issues, into consideration whenever you can about anything, with especially being the case during your performance on the Subway.
Do you all think of Kappa like an older sister, or is it more like a business kind of thing between you guys?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Morelet]
"Kappa is sort of an enigma to me! When we first met, it was after Valkea and my team came home with the title of Unova Champion! I had seen and met her before over video calls... But, seeing that heavily bandaged Samurott in person just sparked something in me. Who is that cool lady? Such gnarly scars! Maybe we could bond over our crazy scars?"
"I tried my best to get closer to her, I wanted to know what her deal was! But, I think I caught her at a time where she wasn't ready to open up to others just yet. Over the years I've been slowly whittling her down though! She's been using me as a taste tester when she cooks new dishes, which is always good, tasty fun."
Tumblr media
[Nema]
"Kappa is my best friend, and I love her dearly! When I came home to the house from Kanto, it was just me and Valkea. I had no team to speak of, so I didn't have a group to settle into. Not that all these adults wanted to deal with me, I was just a little kid at the time."
"Valkea had been encouraging Kappa to come out of the house and meet the other Pokemon they had caught more. And so, she introduced us. I dunno what about my snotty little kid self she thought was worth putting effort into, but she made it her mission to hang out with and take care of me all the time."
"We quickly became fast friends. Best friends! She was the one who got me interested in drawing, and helped me put an name to my Asexuality. If I had to make a guess, I'd say that she took to me because she also didn't have a team. Though, at the time I didn't know it was because they were dead..."
Tumblr media
[Marigold]
"When I came here with Valkea from Kalos, I had no intention of mingling with anyone outside of my team. Especially not the shut-in. Too much effort, not enough brain power in kid-me's head. But, after a few years, I happened to meet Nema. I was taken with her immediately. She was a pretty girl my age, of course I wanted to hang with her."
"But, I could go on about Nema for hours. I eventually met Kappa through her, and I instantly felt off. I didn't know what her damage was, but there was something unsettling about her. If I were religious, I'd call it evil, or devilish. I still feel it now when I look at her. I don't know what the fuck is causing me to feel like this about her, but I hate it. It and she scare the ever-living hell out of me, and I want Nema away from it before she gets hurt."

My lens broke
So yeah, it's broken. That day had to come, I guess.
But it came at the worst possible time. I take a trip for the first time in forever and in the middle of it... Bang!
This picture here is the moment I realized. One moment I was chuckling saying "look at that guy", the next I was having a little meltdown. I kind of felt like when Maradona got suspended at the 1994 World Cup and he said: "they cut off my legs."
Tumblr media
I'll keep this picture forever, as a reminder of my ultimate demise (Disclaimer: Overstatement).
It ruined all the photos I couldn't take... But not my memories.
And I'll tell you what: It's so exciting to be in a new place, seeing new friends.
And I won't forget it.
I won't forget the first sweet melody I heard after leaving the airport. The sweet harmonious melody of the melodious blackbird.
I won't forget the cutest of guys, the yellow-throated euphonia. My beloved.
I certainly won't forget the monotonous, incessant song of the thick-billed seed finch, which I nicknamed "end-credit bird" because it sounded like the final notes of a TV show ending (and I nicknamed him because it took me several days to solve the mystery of who was singing all the time). When I found him I was dancing.
I won't forget the grackles, filling in for the crows. I got your back, guys.
I won't forget how starstruck I was when I saw the collared araçari.
What I will never forget is when I approached the cormorants and gulls (A/N: they were actually terns) to id them and, round a little corner made of bushes, to my massive surprise, a considerable group of adorable ruddy turnstones (and the odd dowitcher) were all crammed together on a tiny portion of sand waiting patiently for the sea to bring yummy things. I was screaming. SCREAMING.
I won't forget the catbirds saying chirp chirp meeeeaaaaoowww.
I also won't forget when a mockingbird landed in front of me and began flashing its wings with every step it took. LIKE LITTLE GUY WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING ARE YOU TRYING TO IMPRESS ME BECAUSE YOU'RE TOTALLY SUCCEEDING.
I definitely won't forget when we were walking under the scorching sun and my life companion excitedly called me to come slowly to see a sleepy nighthawk we had inadvertently disturbed. They were just sleeping there on the hot ground. They don't care! A bea-u-ty.
I won't forget my first northern cardinal! Famous handsome guys. I won't forget my second either, fighting against himself on a window.
I won't forget the impressive jabiru, which is so big we initially thought it was some dude among a thousand egrets and whatnot.
I won't forget walking at night basically in the middle of nowhere and hearing the pauraques whistling amid the constant chirp of tropical insects. A soundtrack that will always bring me back to this place, even if I'm not there.
I won't forget the lovable Morelet's seedeaters, the beautiful trogons, the huge ringed kingfishers.
I won't forget the doves, the parrots, the hummingbirds, the vultures, the woodpeckers, the ospreys, the pelicans, and more, but I've raved enough.
The only regret is that when you start to get to know them, to get acquainted, you have to leave, and you'll never truly know them. You can't belong everywhere. You have your place, with your lil' buddies, and sadly the rest are just passengers in your life.
I felt so alive. It was exciting, and I had a lot of fun.
But now my lens is broken, so if you've noticed the slow business recently, there's the reason. And while I think of what step to take next, unfortunately the activity here will be hugely limited.
I'm sorry for that.
