Something they brought up in the new episode of Rick and Morty: Mort: Ragnarick

SPOILERS ahead:

Morty has become so desensitized to life that he is considered a national security risk. It's understandable, he spent 7 seasons taking part in illegal actions, maiming and killing all kinds of people and aliens and finding out that nothing really matters because of the infinite dimensions.

Morty has essentially become someone who, while still kind and a little immature, can't grasp situations on a normal level. Remember, he spent the remainder of the episode easily killing Vikings over and over with no hesitation or guilt.

And also casually killed a guy with a candlestick that was nearby, also with no hesitation or guilt. It was effortless and shows how skilled he has become in that area.

He still wanted to try to infiltrate the Pope's headquarters in a quiet matter, and he still cared about Rick while he's hurt and also a bit for Bigfoot, but this kid has definitely reached disturbing levels of uncaring at this point.

Even the next episode says point blank that both Rick and Morty have seen too much, and hints they're incapable of enjoying a simple session of scaring because, at this point, almost nothing scares them.

I'm hoping they focus on that in the season finale, or at least in the next season. We know by now that Morty is very smart and his partner is a murderous sociopath who he loves and is kinda codependent on. It would be good if maybe Dr. Wong or maybe the rest of the family addressed it or something. Anyway, can't wait for next week's episode!

my most normie opinion ever is that i thought it was kind of funny. the design is so weird in like a humorous way, and i think their deadpan delivery was silly ("do you not hear the symphony of atoms dying in space?"). i mean its definitely a wackier approach but i didnt hate it

Morty's deeply lonely at the start and his grandfather takes advantage of that, rick pulls the kid out of bed, out of school, whenever he wants and gets him to do whatever he wants, covers up their activities, threatens and endangers and inflicts pain upon morty with intent and cruelty. he shapes morty according to his needs, the entire show is about the space adventures of an old man and his 14 year old grandson and you just gotta wonder, isn't it fucked up that this guy's sidekick and best friend and life partner is a kid? and it is!

Since morty is traumatized on the daily rick sometimes takes his memories, he controls what morty can remember (and therefore who he gets to be), the memory gun is just sci-fi gaslighting i say. and there's transdimensional travel and at one point it's revealed that ricks from different dimensions work together to "breed" mortys, ensure they're born (clone a bunch of them too) because a morty by nature is loyal and forgiving and makes the perfect partner that's easy to manipulate, easy to use. i will forever think of the "bred for forgiveness" line as perverted horrifying incest bait<3

Also one time they were hosts for alien parasites and they fell in love and made out and in the Very First episode rick gets morty to stick giant seeds (that rick needs for an experiment or smth) up his ass to smuggle them through security. they had some kind of dragon soul bond orgasm together. my point is it's borderline incestuous abuse and it's crazy that they imply these characters are tied together cosmically.. if they are it's rick holding their red string of fate like a leash

Rick's backstory never fails to make me cry. Imagine seeing your wife and daughter being brutally killed in front of you simply because you refused to abandon them, then you dedicate decades of your life so you can find the killer, putting yourself through hell and back as you kill versions of yourself desperate to find the person who killed your wife, you progressively become more twisted, more desensitized, you start to believe that nothing matters, you finally agree to a truce to yourself, setting up a market where you bred your grandson for forgiveness, then you finally go back to the person who killed your wife's house, hoping that they come back one day, and hoping that being able to see your babygirl all grown up would finally remove your pain. But it doesn't. You become specifically attached to your grandson. But it's not even your grandson. It's the grandson of your worst enemy. You know you shouldn't be, he's the grandson of the guy who killed your wife. But you still find yourself caring about him, being terrified to lose him, and doing terrible things as long as it means he stays with you, being terrified to lose anyone again. He's one of the only fucking things keeping you happy. Your only fucking reason to live.

That's exactly what. we. fucking. see. We see a decent man turn into a monster because his wife and child were taken from him in the worst possible way. That's something that would cause irreversible damage to anyone. And all with no dialogue it's fucking phenomenal.

This is why one of the last things we see in Rick's memory is him and Morty laughing together. Morty finally brought purpose back into Rick's life. He finally gave Rick's life meaning again. He finally gave Rick a reason to live again. He finally gave Rick a reason to be happy again. A reason to laugh again. A reason to smile again. After being miserable for so long. We only see him smile 3 times throughout this entire thing and 2 of those times were when he was around Morty. Fuck it I'm crying again. This was originally meant to be a short post but it ended up being an over analysis, I hope you enjoyed it.

He's not really doing anything new. He's even doing it on a smaller scale than what the Ricks were doing.

I feel like it's really sad that Evil Morty, for all his capabilities and intelligence, was "successfully" brainwashed by the Citadel to think of Mortys' lives and well-being as insignificant and to not seek attachment to anyone but a Rick (so if you remove Ricks from the equation, attachment to no one is what remains; contrast this with Morty Prime who, when given the option between Rick and his family (after the whole "selfie with the president" thing) opted to stay with his family instead of Rick) and to treat everything as replaceable in general.

there have been small hints. first the stats episode where it shows morty's intelligence is extremely high, and this episode discussed how rick failed to recognize that there are different types of intelligence and that failure caused him to belittle people he saw as "less" intelligent

this episode also discusses a little bit about morty being desensitized to everything going around him. it wouldn't be notable if the next episode preview also didn't mention it, but it does - very quickly, in fact

i'm not sure where they'll go with him, but it's leading to something.

Hi! I read your blogs about Rick & Grooming, and I'm SHOCKED. I have a question considering Evil Morty: taking into consideration that he was basically mind raping Evil Rick, that he already had the parts of SOME kind of mind-control implant inside his own head when he decided to attack Evil Rick, and that he thought strapping naked Mortys on a dome was Not That Big A Deal... is the implication here that in his case the (allegorical) abuse went one step further, or am I reading this wrong?

First of all, sorry for the super delayed response. To answer your question, it's possible!

We haven't gotten explicit confirmation that Evil Morty's life was any different from Morty Prime's, which I think is supposed to make the audience suspect that Morty Prime has the ability to become like Evil Morty in the future.

But the impression I get from the flashback scene at the beginning of Unmortricken is that Evil Morty was highly familiar with the Citadel's practices of raising Mortys to be slaves of Ricks. He might have even been a Morty clone himself who was raised on the Citadel rather than one who was born naturally like Morty Prime.

Your point about how Evil Morty seems to have already had a mind control chip in his head also suggests a former life on the Citadel, as the game Pocket Mortys is based around the concept of the Citadel mind controlling Mortys with a "manipulator chip."

It would make sense if Morty figured out how to use this technology against his assigned Rick and then used his knowledge of the Citadel's inner workings to carry out his plan to destroy the Central Finite Curve.

As for the detail of Evil Morty controlling his Rick to torture a bunch of naked Mortys, I genuinely believe this was meant to be suggestive of both sexual abuse and physical abuse within the greater Rick and Morty dynamic, even if it was done for comedic effect.

In Close Rick-Counters of the Rick Kind, Rick even says "looks like payday at Neverland Ranch in here," referencing the allegations of Michael Jackson's sexual abuse of children at his amusement park. I mean it's pretty blatant.

The episode also does a brief callback to the scene from the simulation episode where Rick tells Morty to undress with him in the shower, once again recalling a similar joke with the new context that it may be one of Rick's most cherished memories of Morty.

So no, I don't think you're entirely off-base to think Evil Morty's desensitization to seeing himself stripped down and tortured points to a more extreme level of abuse than Morty Prime experienced with C-137. Especially since C-137 is increasingly being portrayed as a more emotional kind of Rick who has the capacity to change.

Dates with Rick were rare. Whenever they did happen they usually involved interdimensional travel or something weird like that. With Rick... you had no true sense of normal.

Which was one of the reasons you hated him.

Rick used to be someone you thought was cool. Before you were involved from him. That was because you did not understand or look into his madness.

You had no idea you drove him crazy.

Not until it was too late, that is. The moment you accepted his first date and hooked up, you had forfeit your life to him. Rick never left you alone after that.

He probably couldn't, even if he wanted to... you managed to worm your way into his mind.

So he gave in and expressed the intensity of his obsession towards you.

Being officially together was a strange feeling for the both of you. You didn't like the amount of stress Rick's life caused you. Rick was probably still not used to sticking around you so often as he was used to having flings. Now he... strangely doesn't want any.

Rick felt content with you. He thought he'd never love anyone after Prime Rick ruined his life. But here you were... captivating him.

Your pair felt like it wasn't meant to happen. Probably because no other universe had you two together, from what you knew of. Your "relationship" was an anomaly.

Which was probably why it wasn't working out.

Rick finally tried some sort of normal date this time. You both knew this relationship between you was going down the drain. Rick... didn't actually want it to end.

No... he liked this and was determined to hold it together. Even if it requires some sort of tech to force you.

The date he planned was as normal as he could think of. A walk, some dinner, and some time alone together. He promised nothing too weird.

However, the date still made you wish for a way out... away from him for a sense of normalcy.

You knew what Rick was capable of. He's murdered people in front of you, he's shown possessive tendencies about you... and he's always on the run. You wished he just... gave up on this bond between you.

Yet despite your feelings, you're forced to walk and chat. You're forced to give into his loving embraces and hold his hand. You held out for as long as you could...

But near the end you're on the verge of a breakdown, standing with him in your bedroom while arguing.

"...why won't you love me like you used to?"

"We can't work, Rick!" You cry out, desperation in your tone. "Stop pretending we can!"

"Come on, (Y/N)... I'm sure we can. Just calm down, you know I just want to make us happy."

"You want to make yourself happy, Rick!" Rick's silent at what you say. You turn away, letting out a shakey sigh.

"Baby... you know I can't let you go. I don't know what I'd do without you!"

"Rick..." You plead. "Our relationship isn't right."

"How?"

"You're possessive..." You start, shuffling away from him. "You've killed my friends from my universe. You took me away from my home. All because I told you I couldn't handle what you go through every day!"

You watch Rick for any reaction. He gives you a weird look like what you brought up was normal. Which only encourages your argument....

"You're crazy, Rick! That's what I'm saying! How come you don't see any of that!?"

That sets him off.

"You think I am crazy?!" Rick argues, stepping closer. "The world... no, the UNIVERSE is crazier- It will not let us love!"

"Rick, please... don't shift the blame-"

"You don't get it! You don't understand the universe like I do. The universe could take you away easily! Especially with that other fucking Rick out there who killed Diane!"

Rick lets the past fall out of his mouth... stunning you into silence. The relationship only hurt the two of you now. But Rick would rather deal with that than be alone again....

"... is that what this is about?" You ask mostly to yourself. "That doesn't excuse shit. That just makes you a hypocrite!"

"Yeah, I'll accept that." Rick shrugs. "Doesn't change the fact you loved me at one point. I was protecting you! I was leaving no trace so HE couldn't find you! It was all for the best!"

You stop talking and look away. You don't react when he embraces you. He doesn't force anything... he just holds you in silence. There's no point in fighting.

You aren't sure if what Rick's saying is true... yet you'll never forgive him either way.

You just wish you never hooked up in the first place... you wish you were at home in your dimension... you just want to be normal again.

Sooo I’ve heard some ppl say that fear no mort is gonna be abt them facing their greatest fears or something, and I’ve seen some ppl theorize on what said fears will be. And id like to give my two cents on the matter :)

Rick’s fears

I think that Rick would honestly be terrified of seeing Diane or prime again. Like imagine if Diane’s ghost just showed up and was rlly nice to him and jsut not like herself at all (cuz we know her personality is the same as the ship and garage AI, so she isn’t the nicest person in the world, which like slay). I think her just being nice to Rick and saying how it wasn’t his fault would freak him tf out, cuz let’s remember that he made a ghost AI of her that was programmed to berate him and be mean to him, so he didn’t want comfort or to be told that it wasn’t his fault.

Now, if Rick saw Prime again, one of two things would happen; he would either break down fully, or just be rlly fucking mad and try to kill prime again (personally this is what I want to see the most, but I’ll explain that in a bit)

Another fear could be that the rest of the family (mainly Morty) dies or is fatally injured to the point of no return. Because we’ve seen Rick bring Morty bad from fatal injuries, and death from the last episode multiple times, but how would Rick react if he couldn’t do anything?

Another fear for Rick (this guy is gonna be going thru it) would be that he sees more of prime in Morty. I’ve read multiple fics where Rick is scared of Morty turning out like prime, so what would happen to Rick if that rlly started happening?

Now, another fear, this one I think would be the most intense for Rick, would be pirates. No more to add to that, we all know why :)

Morty’s fears

I think Morty would have more basic fears, things more that a teenager would be afraid of (along with all the other crazy shit that Rick has exposed him to). For starters, he may just be terrified of rejection, which would be an interesting thing to see. Like imagine if Rick was having a full on break down, and then Morty’s just dealing with minor stuff like being told no in a mean way.

A more in depth fear could be abandonment issues. He was definitely rlly upset with the two crows, and very worried abt the Jerrick stuff. Imagine Morty’s stuck in a dark room, completely alone, and then when he does see “Rick” again, he’s just being rude to Morty and telling him how worthless he is (but in a harsher way than he used to, in a way that makes it seem serious). What if Morty got a vision of Rick replacing him with another Morty, like holy shit that would mentally scar him so badly! Or what if a fake Rick started taunting Morty with the free Morty coupon?

I also think that Morty has a buried fear of ending up like prime. Like he’s already sort of on his way to becoming like any Rick, what with him being desensitized to violence and being seen as a national threat. I think that both him and Rick would be absolutely terrified if that happening to Morty, if he someday snaps and Rick can’t do anything abt it.

Edit: just thought abt this but, uh- king jellybean… not much needs to be said for that one…

In conclusion,

I’m seriously excited abt the next episode, I wanna see what theories (from anybody) were correct and I wanna see if the finale is gonna be as mentally scarring as the others have been!

Back to what I said abt Rick seeing prime, you all know abt the theory of prime downloading a bit of himself into Rick’s head right? What if Rick sees Prime’s “ghost” in whatever haunted house they go to, and he fully thinks that it’s just fake and stuff after the initial shock. But when they get back home, what if Rick sees prime again? What if he continues to see prime on a daily basis? What if that escalates to prime always being there, always tormenting him, always telling him how worthless he is, until Rick can’t take it anymore?

I haven’t seen anything about hazbin hotel but I don’t trust Twitter as a group to understand anything. Legitimately. So if I hear there’s “Twitter drama” about hazbin hotel I’m not exactly gonna take it seriously.

Hazbin hotel is, to my understanding, a raunchy mostly unserious/crass adult cartoon like, idk, rick and morty or something. I don’t care if the gay sex worker makes jokes about SA or discusses it lightly or flippantly or whatever, have you seen the shit I say about my SA experiences?? I love joking about it, I think it’s funny as hell.

BIOGRAPHY.

detroit, michigan was in bad shape long before the earth started to go to shit. nixon sometimes thought it was an omen of a place, warning the rest of the country of what was to come if they didn't start changing. long story short, it's safe to say nixon was desensitized to the shock of broken infrastructure, sudden lack of resources like water and electricity, and being surrounded by more criminals than heroes. sometimes, the criminals were the heroes.

among the burning buildings and sirens that accompanied devil’s night, the muffled screams of lydia montgomery could be heard. she was giving birth to her first and last born child, nixon. divorced long before he reached corporeal realization, charles thorne didn’t meet his first born until he was three days old. this absentee pattern would continue for the majority of nixon’s childhood. they felt they were unique in seeing charles in a negative light, that his other children knew him as more of a present figure in their life. but, nix never took the time to ask them much about it. this separation was the first of many things that left a bitter taste on nixon’s tongue which spread to be an acidic stream of spite and anger that pooled in his throat and stomach. as a child, however, his mother’s love made up for everything his father couldn’t give.

the only thing he could ever thank ol’ charlie for, was getting him his first real computer. not some stolen school workbook or ancient device that hardly ran anything. in so many ways it was comfort. helping the weird kid at school find a home somewhere, find people with similar interests, learn new things, and drown out the world with a wide variety of music that could describe their feelings better than they ever could. see, from a young age, nixon wanted to be a performer, tried out several instruments, theater, even choir, and throughout it all expressed themselves through their appearance. purposely shutting out gender conformities and making themselves a walking piece of art. the black and white and binary way of life was no way for anyone to live, in their opinion. the funny juxtaposition of that way of thinking was, nixon ended up finding their true calling within the binary of the internet. it seemed that the only keyboard they had any talent with was the mechanical keyboard attached to his custom built pc. in lines of code is where he made music, wrote unique and rare melodies right into the mainframes of companies, organizations, and people’s computers and phones. at first it was to change grades for boring classes they could pass in their sleep and would rather sleep than attend.

later it turned into credit card companies to record payments on accounts that were never made so his mom could stop worrying about the debt piling up. then it switched to hospitals and pharmacies when she got sick. the disease took her quick. seemed to be a blink of an eye and suddenly he was holding her hand for the last time. seventeen years old was when nixon set his mother to rest, the only parent they had if they were being technical ( and nixon is keen on technical when it came to facts ). the rest of their story goes fast from there, as growing up does when you’re forced to do it. lucky for them, growing up with a single mom in the middle of an economic collapse in one of the worst urban environments in the developed world set them up with quite a few skills to survive.

nixon found it best to keep moving, their deep seated anger for the world and what it continued to deprive them and many others of, grew in each place. got paid to get people's information, collaborated with other hackers ( though i wouldn’t jot him down as much of a team player back then ) to expose corrupt politicians and corporate criminals. they’d gotten so confident in their abilities that they started trying to take these giants on by themselves. this caught up with him a couple of times. in a gruesome way, nixon learned why david and goliath was a story, a metaphor and nothing more. the first on the outskirts of vegas, a dangerous place for a hacker to be in to begin with, casinos can be ruthless but especially when criminals own the majority of them. it was that interaction that had them fleeing to japan, where they once again ran into some trouble. ultimately, it left them with a reconstructed ribcage, a couple new discs in their spine, and a netport that occasionally glitches when not connected.

some have tried telling them that last part is in their head, but to that they suggest switching brains with them so they can feel the random brain zaps. sometimes they’ve gotten bad enough to affect their ribs and spine. painful, if he was being completely honest but, then again, when it comes to their problems they tend to keep it to themselves. especially when they hold what they consider to be a coveted position in the nano zillas. nixon found a home within their ranks and beneath the abandoned amusement park. they found the aesthetic to be comforting and stood behind the leader’s cause— at least most of them anyways. hence why they tend to hide any issues that may cause them to be removed from the group. it’s the first time in a long time they’ve felt comfortable somewhere. if they were honest with themselves, nixon could admit they have a few addictions, probably need to see an engineer or surgeon but instead— they choose to move past the pain, channel it elsewhere and insist that their other vices and habits are purely recreational. sooner or later it’s bound to bite them in the ass, it’s only a matter of when, which one, and how.
