Three awesome nominees by @andrewsketch for today’s Goodtype Tuesday! ・・・ What a great idea for this weeks #goodtypetuesday. This week the challenge was to letter the name of an artist or designer who you would like to see take over the @goodtype feed. A good excuse to use a bit of shine theory and shine a light on some creators. • After seeing the list of artists that have already done the takeover, I was amazed at how many talented peeps have had the honour! I didn’t want to nominate someone who had already been on, so instead chose these three cracking artists/designers/letterers who don’t really know me at all, but who I follow on the ‘gram and who are all inspirational to me (and I think they are all UK based too). Here’s a summary... • @lozives runs his lettering business @idleletters making some of the most jaunty, fun and textured lettering around. He’s also got a wonderful eye for colour and his illustrations are really characterful. • @racheljoylettering makes beautiful shadow type lettering and is a master of the art of signwriting. Her palette is bright and vibrant, and the bezels she puts on her type is exquisite! • @mrahayes is a typographer and illustrator whose feed is always alive with colour and detail. What I’m loving most at the moment is how he makes these letter moooove! • So, check them out, and hopefully one day they will be bossing the goodtype feed! • #handtype #thedailytype #typespire #typegang #letteringco #designspiration #typeyeah #theligaturecollective #typeeverything #typetopia #typography #procreate #handmadefont #handmadelettering #goodtype #typographyinspiration #shinethelight #illustration #animation #signwriting https://www.instagram.com/p/B4x-Qe3pHra/?igshid=6tg59znd2ixx

Reflection - Meeting with Mr Adam Hayes
I had the pleasure of meeting Illustrator Adam Hayes who specialises in Typography via Illustration and design. Adam is from Matlock and moved to a more rural home later on for a quitter life to focus on his career and family. He mentioned that a lot of his work comes from abroad, in particular New York, which if you think about it is rather inspiring. To be successful in such a busy and competitive city and work and live somewhere on the other side of the world in a much more quiet and serene environment. I find it incredibly inspiring, seeing the possibility of working wherever you wish and still getting the success of a big city life.
With this I needed to know his secret, what did he do to acquire work from all over without actually having to be in that location? How does it work? Should I work for a company, be solely freelance or have an agent? And what did he do to promote himself to the people he wanted to work for?
Without spilling all the tips and bits of knowledge he gave me, I can say this; with the modern age of internet, email, speedy delivery’s and a large amount of the world’s population on social media, distance is not the be all and end all, especially when art & design projects can be sent digitally. You can be successful and never see a client or commissioner face to face. However if you put the effort in to do so, it can go a long way in improving a business relationship. In terms of whether to work freelance or have an agent, it is good to choose wisely; the right agent and for the right situation. Adam told us of a rather hard and extensive job he did which he took on alone. He reflected on it saying “if I could go back and do the project again, I would have asked an agent to help. I’d have been happy to pay the agency fee to save time with price negotiation, and other admin duties. If I did I’d have been less stressed and could have maybe done some other work to compensate for the agents fees”. So I guess when it comes to larger projects an agent is a good call, but you have to balance whether it is worth the fees or not. He also mentioned that when it comes to the work he does abroad, he solely relied on a NY agency, but not for local/UK work.
Well anyway, I asked the questions, got the answers and felt inspired!
But with this new knowledge I was still struggling with my place, my “voice” in the industry. So I asked him about how to find your style, your ‘niche’. And to be honest, I didn’t get much besides not to worry, it’ll come over time after practice. Which may seem unhelpful. But the wisdom hit me a few days later. I was doing my promotional material for Professional Practice, sketching away in my sketchbook with no purpose but to draw something which represented me and my work. So I stopped worrying and fell into my natural way of drawing, then I had to figure out how to make my natural sketch presentable and marketable, so I turned to old school lino, transferred my sketch and cut it out. I love the whole process, start to finish and the outcome was perfect. It felt like ‘me’ my style.
Now all I had to do was find a practical, marketable application. For this I turned to what I know and what I love; the outdoors, nature and sports, with one foot still planted in my geeky pop culture.
With this new sense of purpose I have a clear vision of where I fit in the field and what I want from my career.
Watch this space!
