For anyone interested, I’m on a Pop Music course and I’m study the music industry in business classes, with theory (boring as hell) classes too and I have recording sessions, music history & context lessons and on Fridays we have perfomance workshop, where we pick a song to learn in the morning and practice with a band or solo or whatever is needed, then by the end of the day we have an hour of tech set up and then we perform it to the rest of the people on the course. It’s a lot of fun but hard work, we have tech students doing live sound and someone from tech doing the lighting and stuff. Feel free to ask me any questions about it!

Songs for solidarity fundraising concert.

Notable queue action in the form of #dermotkennedy hardcore fresh from last night’s#o2arena triumph. Fun to listen to the stories and tales of another group of fans. Hardcore mostly from the states and a few from Ireland.

Such a beautiful historic venue for the event to be held. Feeling small and intimate despite the optical illusion of vastness. They say the Camera adds 10lbs to you very true with RAH.

Early doors and early start to the evenings proceedings. Our two MC hosts welcome us and thank everyone for their support. Anna Calvi starts us off. I last saw Anna at Dingwells support the chaps in 2011. I forgot what a wizard she is with her golden vocals and guitar. She has since risen high in my cool list as the Musical Director of Peaky Blinders. If it’s good enough for Stephen Knight and Cillian Murphy it’s good enough for me.

The evening although for our entertainment has strong messages of urgency and emergency due to the continuing crisis in Turkey and Syria. Text Hope to 70499 to donate £10.

Head of War Child Richard Clarke and Turkey Mozaik director present the work that has been called upon in the last 2 months on the ground in Turkey and Syria and that they road is long and there is no short way out of the crisis.

“Set change” MC host guests included actor and comedian Omid Djalili and the most lovely legend Olivia Coleman.

So many musical highlights. The newly formed Solitary ensemble, formed over WhatsApp and performing together for the first and only time tonight. A collection of musicians performing from Turkey and Syria. A magical heart breaking sound.

James Bay, humbled to be there and supporting the event.

Hozier, took us to church. Can’t wait to see him again on tour in July.

Marcus Mumford bring the evening to a close. Awake my soul. The Cave. Grace. Cowboy and a off mic I will wait. Not much banter but we did learn that his wife first saw Mumford with Laura Marling and thought they were a bit “shouty”. Spoke passionately of his work with War Child and being an ambassador since 2015. First hand experience of what the charity can achieve.

4 1/2 hrs of entertainment for us but most importantly £150,000 of much needed money raised.

An honour and a privilege to be there. Thank you to all those who worked so hard to coordinate the evening.

Lineage Challenge - Day 3 (Herrity Family)

Here we are! A playlist that culminates in some of the old Irish folk songs sung by members of the Herrity family, as well as just vibes. There is also of course some overlap with Deaglán's own personal playlist, but for the lineage one I tried to target songs that can feature elements of the various generations. Also note that it's not organized in a particular order, so feel free to shuffle to your heart's content.

Much of the playlist is influenced by folk music — and also just Irish musicians in general — as it is a big part of the identity of the Herrity family. That aside, there are some conflicting elements in the playlist as well, pertaining to the overall essence of stillness and unobtrusiveness that govern much of the line's existence. Of course, for the moments where there are certain souls that venture out beyond the confines of the family's values, things have not always turn out very well.

Some standouts:

The Bold Fenian Men - OMNIA | Although the song itself was not written as an Irish rebel song until the 1910s, it speaks of previous Irish nationalist generations taking up arms in the 1800s. With the Herritys not only descending from Fionn mac Cumhaill who headed up the Fianna Eireann (of which the Fenians derive), but also having a branch of the family that split off into nationalism, this song was included as reference to these extended members of the family, although dead.

This is the Sea - The Waterboys | A song about relinquishing past tethers and letting go, and the internal struggle that it brings. It seemed quite fitting particularly for Deaglán and his siblings especially as the former ventures out into the world and strays far from his family ideals before returning home in his old age.

The Killer Was a Coward - Dermot Kennedy | A song that connects to one of the older members of the Herrity family tree, Feildhlim Herrity, who lost all of his brothers and sisters during the Williamite War (aka, The War of Two Kings), and for whom after getting revenge instilled the practice in the family of not getting involved in outside affairs, muggle or otherwise.

Music I Liked in 2022

Every year I reflect on the pop culture I enjoyed and put it in some sort of order.

2022 was a good music year, alt/indie rock-wise, anyway. I found that each season brought a different favorite, so much like last year, trying to rank them would be quite arbitrary. Once again, I’ve put my recommendations into three tiers as well as a couple bonus categories for further listening.

Here’s a playlist of songs from my top 15(ish) records for your sampling pleasure:

Tier 3: Worth A Listen

Belle and Sebastian – A Bit Of Previous

A quite catchy and fun return-to-form from the Scottish indie rockers.

Dayglow – People In Motion

For his second record in as many years, Sloan Struble leans back into the electropop of his debut, resulting in the poppiest and most consistent Dayglow release yet.

Dermot Kennedy – Sonder

While not quite as folk-inflected as his debut, Kennedy’s sophomore full-length is a solid and soulful collection of lovelorn pop jams.

First Aid Kit – Palomino

Sweden’s Söderberg sisters latest LP features a great collection of sweeping pop anthems and lush harmonies.

PUP – THE UNRAVELING OF PUPTHEBAND

This record from Canada’s PUP is a super meta and darkly comic blast of pop-punk energy, featuring imagined meetings with record executives and existential ruminations on life as a professional musician.

Tier 2: Appointment Listening

Anaïs Mitchell – Anaïs Mitchell and Bonny Light Horseman – Rolling Golden Holy

Hadestown creator Anaïs Mitchell had a busy year, releasing her first solo album in almost a decade in January and then a sophomore album with Bonny Light Horseman in October. Both are lovely collections of poetic folk-rock.

Beach Bunny – Emotional Creature

Following up on 2021’s excellent Blame Game EP, the second full-length from Beach Bunny is a great mix of pop-rock tunes, by turns introspective and propulsive.

Metric – Formentera

The latest from synth-rock powerhouse Metric is another excellent blend of indelible hooks and Emily Haines’ reflective lyrics.

Spoon – Lucifer On The Sofa

I’m not a Spoon megafan, but their latest record is an undeniable mix of rootsy guitar riffs and grooves that stands with the best of their catalog.

Tall Heights – Juniors

Juniors is a bit more pop-oriented and less folky than their previous efforts without losing their signature transportive soundscapes.

Tier 1: Highest Recommendation

Alex G – God Save The Animals

A fully-realized synthesis of Alex G’s most melodic songwriting and quirkier impulses, God Save The Animals ruminates on subjects of faith, love, and the beauty and darkness of the human condition. As compelling and mysterious as ever.

Bartees Strange – Farm To Table

The sophomore LP from idiosyncratic singer/songwriter/guitarist Bartees Strange is an adventurous fusion of styles and influences, with affecting personal lyrics including reflections on subjects including his experience as a military brat, the pandemic and the death of George Floyd.

beabadoobee – Beatopia

A lovely bedroom pop record that recalls female-fronted 90s dream pop and alt-rock, Beatopia feels both familiar and fresh, like making a new friend you feel like you’ve known forever.

Stars – From Capelton Hill

Very much a pandemic record, the latest from Canada’s Stars is nonetheless beautiful and moving, with resonant themes of loss, isolation, connection, and through it all, the slightest glimmers of hope.

The Wombats – Fix Yourself, Not The World and Is This What It Feels Like To Feel Like This? EP

I hadn’t fully connected with Liverpool’s Wombats before, but their latest full-length caught my attention with a collection of hook-laden tunes evocative of the 90s Britpop explosion’s best. The companion EP from later in the year is no less catchy or popsmart.

BONUS! Other Favorite EPs of the Year

Khruangbin & Leon Bridges – Texas Moon

Following on their Texas Sun EP from 2020, Khruangbin and Leon Bridges’ latest collaboration is another smooth collection of tuneful psych-rock, culminating in personal song-of-the-year contender “Mariella.”

Of Monsters and Men – Tíu

I’ve fallen off on OMAM a bit over the past few years, but this EP commemorating the 10th anniversary of their debut is a compelling reminder of what makes them special.

DOUBLE BONUS! Streaming-Only Albums

So, I’m very much an outlier in how I listen to music, preferring to buy physical copies of albums rather than paying for streaming services. As such, I use the likes of Spotify mainly to preview records before purchasing from the artists and since its free version only allows shuffle mode on mobile devices, I end up not spending as much time with albums I don’t own.

I really like each of these records but as I hold out hope for CDs or vinyl someday, I have yet to buy digital versions and haven’t listened enough to slot them among the other picks above.

my favorites right now Ben Shive's The Cymbal Crashing Clouds (THE PIANO. THE LYRICISM. THE V I B E S. the musician pun at the end of EGBDF makes me absolutely insane honestly.), Paramore's After Laughter (I feel this album in my SOUL. also the lyrics flat-out slap), and, this isn't really an album proper, but MCR's Conventional Weapons (obsessed with the lyrics and emotion in this. Number 4 is an outlier and shoudl not have been counted, I don't like those songs, but the REST??? INSANE PERSON BEATS TO CRY TO).

so, my dad is actually the one who got me listening to Dermot Kennedy, I once was riding shotgun with him with my kid sister (middle schooler) in the backseat and my dad's Spotify was just playing through DK's entire discography, I vaguely recognized the first bit of Shelter, leaned over to my dad and went "I think this one has an unflagged F-bomb" (which tbh i wouldn't bother about if my sister wasn't there. but she's like...... an innocent child??? I'm protective, ok? shfkfbskfns), my dad was like "nah we're good" and. and then. yeah. skfkfnskfnskgns it was certainly A Circumstance.

that said I have never been good at talking to my dad about stuff (we have a good relationship, I'm just terrible at starting conversations, as we've established, and apparently it's genetic bc my dad and I are incapable of carrying a discussion longer than like... 60 seconds. infodumping? Favorite Bands/Favorite Solo Artists: I don't really have a favourite band/solo artist at the moment but I was a huge fan of Savage Garden/Darren Hayes back in the day and still love listening to their music. I love my cheesy 90s boy bands- Backstreet Boys & N*Sync. Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera. Classic Madonna. ABBA. Queen. Michael Buble for a bit of easy listening lol. Irish musicians like Dermot Kennedy, the Cranberries and the Coronas.

Why I chose my url: I was watching Line of Duty when I created this blog and was obsessed with the legend that is Ted Hastings and his catchphrases - in particular his iconic phrase - "I'm interested in one thing and one thing only, and that's bent coppers"

Instruments: I played piano (briefly) when I was younger but alas my dreams of becoming a rock star never came to light! I would have loved to learn guitar (maybe there's still time...)

Dream job(s): Hmmm when I was younger I would have said a writer and I think I would still love to pursue that dream if I was actually able to dedicate myself fulltime to it.

Favourite Food: Any food if I'm being honest - ha ha! But something like spaghetti carbonara is particularly tasty.

Top 3 fictional universes I'd like to live in: Something like Bridgerton or Downton Abbey Season 1 - a time before there was any World Wars and there was relative peace. A time where I can dress up in pretty fancy dresses and attend fabulous balls and spend my days sitting around reading. Then maybe a universe where I'm like a fearless badass vampire hunter or something. And then a more realistic universe where I'm a well respected detective solving crimes and catching the bad guys.

Lost in Japan Dedicate “Run” to their Fans on New Album ‘Night Talks’

Indie rock band Lost in Japan craft captivating sounds that resonate with listeners around the world. “Our mission statement has always been that we’re here for you no matter what is going on in your life. Pretty much all of our songs are about overcoming obstacles and making it through hard times. Some ‘sad boy’ stuff with very uplifting chords,” frontman Addison Johnson states.

Caravan Du Nord

On Saturday, February 25th, Caravan du Nord will be at Paramount Theatre in Austin, featuring Mae Simpson, with Maygen & The Birdwatcher and Amanda Grace. 

This multi-genre musical experience will be an unforgettable showcase of amazing Minnesota talent in the beautiful historic Paramount Theatre in downtown Austin. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund, and is sponsored by The Current and Explore Minnesota. 

Caravan du Nord features Minnesota musicians of different genres and backgrounds from across the state. This year’s showcase series launched in October 2022 stops in St. Paul and Red Wing, and will continue January-March, 2023 with tour stops in Rochester, Northfield, Austin, and Duluth. Maygen & The Birdwatcher - Coming off the successful release of their award-winning "stunning" (Americana UK) debut full-length album, Moonshine, Maygen & The Birdwatcher are off and runnin’. The folk duo-turned 6-piece adventurously blur the sounds of country, bluegrass, folk, and blues - keepin' it all fresh. With the versatility to play in a number of stage configurations ranging from an intimate duo to their boot-stomping full band, the group can charm a broad range of audiences. From beauty to grit, sadness to silliness, the common thread is that this group loves music, and playing it together. It shows. To ensure the full spectrum of their sound is available to listeners, the band is releasing a 6-song EP Sept 9 called Bootleggin’ At The Flower Shoppe. They went right back to Flowers Studio (The Jayhawks, Mason Jennings, Soul Asylum, Jeremy Messersmith, Lizzo) with Kris Johnson, who was their engineer on Moonshine, and recorded the more energetic and good-timin’ songs that were written around the same time as Moonshine, but hadn’t gotten the chance to be properly recorded and shared with their fans. Amanda Grace - Amanda is a Minnesota born and raised singer-songwriter producing music drifting between folk and rock with an emphasis on melody and ballads. With roots as a pianist her writing is thematically varied with an emphasis on melody; with ballads wrapped in warm vocals. In 2016 she received a "Front Of The Line" pass from The Voice.
