Very Random Akatsuki Headcanons

Sasori would 100% have a garden, and most of the stuff he grows would be illegal or highly toxic. He would ask Zetsu for tips a lot and force Deidara to help him weed it even though Deidara will LOUDLY complain about it the whole time. Sasori will gently sing to/ talk to his plants when he thinks no one is looking.

Kisame the type to nag others about how important it is to drink water and stay hydrated but. He has never fully finished one single bottle of water. Any place they are, you can immediately tell that Kisame’s been there because every surface area will have plastic water bottles sitting on it with various levels of water in them.

Hidan has many, many bad teeth, mostly in the back of his mouth. Missing, chipped, cavities or straight rotting. Always in some level of pain but never seeks out help because you know, Lord Jashin encourages personal suffering. Was finally tentacle-held to a chair by Kakuzu and forced to let Sasori do what repair work he could after the others got tired of hearing him curse and grumble all night over his mouth pain. Absolutely loves his new smile afterwards but never admits it.

Every single member of the Akatsuki has at some point had a crush on Konan. Including Zetsu. But it went away once each member started seeing her as a sister or mother figure. The only one it didn’t go away for is Nagato, but he’d never admit his true feelings because he values their friendship and working relationship too much.

Itachi likes to collect rocks. He’s an amateur geologist and enjoys finding different types of stones when he’s out on missions. The others learn this about him and will sometimes take the time after missions or when traveling to pick up “pretty” rocks to bring back to him.

Deidara has a lot of anxiety and restlessness, and keeping himself busy alleviates that. He prefers doing things with his hands which is why he’s always making little sculptures with his clay. If no clay is available he’ll tap or drum his fingers on things or fiddle with his hair. The faster his fingers move it means the more anxious he feels. Sasori would get annoyed by this behavior so he created for Dei what would essentially be a ninja world version of a fidget-spinner. Deidara loved it and he makes sure to pack it with him whenever he leaves on missions.

Nagato’s fingers are often bloody because he’s a nail-biter to the extreme. He’ll chomp those things down right to the quick of the finger. The others will “gift” him gloves to try and prevent this from happening, and it’ll work for while, but sooner or later he’s right back at it again.

Deidara once gained ten pounds in two months because Tobi kept convincing him to stop at sweets cafes while they were out traveling, and then to have seconds and thirds of whatever they were eating.

Kakuzu figured out that Hidan didn’t know how to read when Hidan would avoid looking at the map on missions and kept giving Kakuzu wrong information about sign posts along roads. After a lot of convincing that he wasn’t “making fun of him”, Kakuzu finally got Hidan to let him teach him basic reading and math skills over the course of a year.

When Orochimaru was a part of the Akatsuki, one day he managed to get Konan alone and was hitting on her in a very creepy Jiraiya-esque way. Turns out that he was merely trying to get her to trust him so that, when he ultimately left the Akatsuki, he would be able to convince her to follow so he could study her body and paper-jutsu. Having had no close experiences with women other than Tsunade, who always responded favorably to flirtatious behavior, he’d assumed that this was how ALL women would react. If Itachi hadn’t driven Oro away, Konan would have blindsided and killed him first.

Nagato (in a Pein body) gave the sex talk to Deidara, Hidan and Itachi. All three of them hadn’t the slightest clue about how anything worked in that regard. Sasori gave him diagrams out of his medical books to aid in his talk. Nagato kept having to add on to his talk because of the questions. “What if you’re a guy who likes guys? How does that work?” “What if you don’t like anyone like that, or you don’t want to ever do those kind of things; is that okay?”

In strong sunlight:

Konan burns bright red.

Itachi and Hidan brown.

Zetsu withers.

Nagato dehydrates within two minutes. As does Kisame.

Deidara sprouts freckles.

Sasori smells like a fire.

Obito and his Hashirama cell DNA photosynthesize like a damn tree.

Kakuzu also turns into a freckle-factory but because his skin is already so dark, it’s unnoticeable.

Sasori has fairly moderate misophonia and especially can’t stand the sound of people chewing. It was one of his primary reasons for turning his body into a puppet; so he no longer had to endure the sound of himself eating. He thought he’d died and gone to hell when he found out that Deidara chews food with all three mouths.

Deidara likes Tobi to read to him at night. It gives him a very comfortable sleepy feeling. The more Deidara nods off the more Tobi lets his voice become more natural/Obito. This is pleasant to Obito because doing the “Tobi voice” all day puts a huge strain on his throat, so it’s nice to be able to break character once in a while and speak normally.

Hidan is extremely sensitive to the cold and will do anything to avoid having to travel or do missions in the winter.

Konan has kept a diary of her life ever since she was a child. She picked up the habit of writing during the period when Jiraiya was staying with/watching over her, Nagato and Yahiko.

Deidara developed a hell of a crush on Kakashi after “meeting” and getting his arms blown off by him and the Konoha nin. He’d gush about Kakashi for days afterward … to Tobi. Tobi who had to grit his teeth and not start screaming over how Kakashi unintentionally attracted everyone that Obito was ever interested in.

Best Smelling to Worst Smelling:

Itachi (would be higher but often smells like strong, bitter medicine and night-sweats)

Nagato (his actual body, not a Pein body)

Hidan and Sasori tie for worst because both smell like blood and corpses

Obito never killed his grandmother during the Uchiha massacre. He used a very powerful jutsu to erase her memory and then relocate her to a place in a village far away that took care of the elderly. He pays the facility with the money he earns/steals during missions, and every so often he’ll go and visit her at night, when she’s alone in her room. She doesn’t know who he is and just thinks that he’s a nice young man that’s there because he’s visiting somebody else.

Kisame loves to bake. It started because he was worried over Itachi being so thin and never seeming to want to eat anything other than desserts. So Kisame taught himself how to make cakes and pies and cookies, etc. Over time it became a zen-like activity to him that helps him relax and clear his head when he’s stressed out.

Kakuzu is as vain over his hair as Deidara is over his own. At least once a week they’ll get together and give each other trims and deep conditioning treatments. Sometimes Itachi will join if he feels up to it. Hidan mocks them for this but is secretly trying to grow his hair longer so that he can join them.

My gift for the hilarious @ladytyburn for the Nagato Birthday gift exchange! Expanding again on her office AU (this is why Kisame has been un-fished a bit YES it felt wrong but I'm strong)

And I don't know what to get him..." Itachi innocently answers, thinking about old Madara: "Oh I know the struggle, I never know what to get my grandpa. Old people haha." She put a hand on his shoulder, and tell him through gritted teeth: "Itachi... Nagato is 35." Itachi is very embarrassed and apologizes. Before he can add anything he's interrupted by Deidara who put his hand on Itachi's shoulder, saying to Konan: "You could buy me art!" She asks: "Can you guarantee it won't explode?" to which he answers: "Nope!" so she dismiss the idea. Hidan includes himself in the conversation, suggesting: "Easy! Buy yourself lingerie and surprise him!" Deidara and Itachi are mortified, scolding him: "Hidan! That's so inappropriate! And you can't theorize about the boss' private life!" Konan dismiss the idea, unphased: "Nah I already have enough and picked one already for that night." Itachi is even more mortified, feeling like this is Too Much Info. Sasori chimes in holding a doll still in her box, suggesting it for the present, but Konan dismiss it as well. She says: "I want something truly special. More personal-" Sasori attempt to chime in again, saying: "A you shaped doll-" but she angrily dismiss him again, pushing him down with her hand. Kisame tells her wisely: "You know him the best, Konan. Trust yourself. Pick something that will make you think of him."

On the next page, Konan is out of the office, wearing casual clothes with a small green backpack and wanders what seems to be a mall, still upset and thinking: "... Something that will make me think of him..." Her attention is caught by something and she smiles at last, saying: "Oh! This is!..." On the next panel she holds a book over her head triumphantly, exclaiming: "Our old teach's new book!! Yes! This is perfect!! He loved the first one!" She is standing next to a book display with a poster of Jiraiya in a funny pose and goofy expression, the poster reads: "New! By 'best seller' '''author''' Jiraiya." On the next panel, time has past and it is now Nagato's birthday. He is late at work, just closing his laptop, appearing tired and saying: "-Sigh- It's already 7 pm. I didn't see time pass by... Again... Time to go home." But as he comes out of his office on his wheelchair (wearing his coat and froggie slippers), he is surprised by loud exclamations and the pop of multiple party horns and confetti thrower. His employees yells: "Happy birthday boss!!" While he looks horrified and genuinely scared.

On the next panel, the office is all prepped for a party, a tablet is set up with Zetsu the plant (wearing a bowtie), a cake and a bottle of champagne. Hidan is holding balloons and is yelling, pointing at the table: "We even got you a cake!" A banner hanging on the wall reads: "Happy 635th birthday!" Deidara is screaming: "I got fireworks!" holding one up in the air. On the side, Kakuzu is sleeping on an office chair next to a table with a cup on it. A caption reads: "was drugged to avoid a money tantrum." Nagato is all confused, hair disheveled by the shock. Konan is standing in the middle, holding her present, looking all embarrassed, she tells him: "I'm so sorry, I didn't know they'd do this..." She then give him the present, watching him unwrap it with a soft smile, reminiscing a dear memory of their teacher putting his hands on their head when they were kids, Nagato holding his book preciously. She says: "I took Kisame's advice and picked something that made me think of us... I think you'll love it." The background behind her is made of grey and pinkish roses. But when Nagato unwraps the book he totally misses the author name and is instead shocked to read the big warning in the corner: "R18, this is porn." He turns red and sit shocked and confused with the book in his hands. The background behind him is a collage of ahegaos (I'm sorry). Konan put her hands next to her face, smiling wide and asking: "So... Do you like it?" Next to her is a caption pointing at her: "Genuinely did not check." She looks so happy but Nagato is still red and confused, he doesn't want to offend her and ruin her happiness so he answers: "Y-yes thank you." Everyone in the room (even the plant) looks at him with a knowing naughty smile as he gets even more embarrassed, Nagato frowns wondering: "Why in front of everyone!" /.End ID]

Scenes or Comic Panels I Would Draw If I Could Draw BC Some Of My Chatpost Ideas I See Better As Pictures Not Words, Part Two.

-Deidara having had way too much coffee or soda and is sitting with Sasori, explaining one of his favorite tv shows or something and just info-dumping like crazy. And the other Akatsuki members pass by throughout the day and they all wonder how the hell Sasori is just calmly sitting there, giving Deidara his full attention while the blonde just rants for literal hours. Finally Dei wears himself down and falls asleep and Konan goes in to check on Sasori and she’s shocked to see it’s not Sasori at all but one of his puppet body-doubles. Dei in his caffeinated frenzy just didn’t notice.

-Shikadai, Boruto and Mitsuki using a metal detector in the Nara woods, something sets it off so they start digging. Finds Hidan (his Jashin necklace is what set the detector off). Shikadai doesn’t know what to do with a talking head but Mitsuki mentions that his Parent makes bodies in his lab all the time. So they cart Hidan off to Orochimaru. Hilarity (or horrible, horrible chaos) ensues.

-Pakkun finds the Akatsuki hideout. Is preparing to inform Konoha of its whereabouts but recognizes something strangely familiar about the scent of the tall man in the orange mask. Waits a while, spies through the window at night and Mask-Man takes off the mask and. Holy shit. It’s the guy Pakkun’s master Kakashi has been mourning all these years. Leaves, goes to the rest of the ninken. The group all together waits until Obito is alone, ambushes him, and drags him back to Kakashi. They receive many treats and many pats that night. Pakkun is ring-bearer at their wedding.

-Deidara and Itachi start sleeping together in the winter. Not having sex but literally just sharing a bed. Because Kisame is cold-blooded and doesn’t provide the sickly Itachi adequate warmth, and Sasori being a puppet doesn’t get into bed with Deidara a lot as-is because he has no need for sleep, and when he does, his body doesn’t provide warmth either. Kisame and Sasori act like they’re fine with it but secretly kiiiiiinda jealous. Eventually Hidan wants in on the situation too because he feels left out of the “sleepovers” and Kakuzu sits up half the night counting money or reading the Bingo Book anyway. But Kakuzu … is MORE than happy to get Hidan out of his hair (and off of his expensive sheets).

-Deidara pregnant, asleep, and Sasori sitting just fixated on his belly. He gently puts his hand on the belly and the baby gives a little kick. Sasori makes a game out of asking the baby yes or no questions, with a kick being a Yes. Eventually Deidara stirs half-awake and asks “Will your Daddy shut up and let me sleep?!” and then he gives Sasori a kick off the bed with his own legs, mumbles “Good, hm” and goes back to bed.

-Sasori looking up to the sky and asking God to give him something beautiful from heaven. Out of nowhere Deidara explodes up out of the ground, cursing and dirty, into Sasori’s arms. Sasori looks at Deidara, then at the ground and is like “Thank you, Devil-san.”

-Kisame having a talk with Obito, formally asking his permission to marry Itachi. Obito asking how he managed to see through the Tobi persona, Kisame telling him that any idiot could see that “Tobi” was too far-fetched a personality to be believed. The others all say something similar to having figured out that Tobi was an Uchiha, except for Deidara who nearly faints. “I slept with an Uchiha?!” and Hidan is like, “Fuck the Uchiha part; are you telling me you slept with TOBI?!”

-Nagato noticing how much time Konan spends with Kisame and starts to think that maybe she’s attracted to muscles. So he secretly tries to work out but ends up spraining a few ribs and ends up in bed. Konan asks him what he was trying to do, Nagato confesses and Konan laughs. She tells Nagato that she goes out with Kisame so much because the shark is intimidating and being with him prevents men from hitting on her. Next scene is Nagato accompanying Konan to the grocery store, with every single one of his Pein bodies in tow, forming a terrifying wall around the couple, who are holding hands.

-((I think I’ve said this in a post before but)) All of the boys in the Akatsuki wanting to take a shirtless picture together, to show off their “muscles”. They ask Konan to take the picture but she’s offended they didn’t ask her to be in it. they say sure, thinking she’ll be in her bra but nope, she takes off everything and lets the twins out while she flexes. the final picture is Konan flexing in the center, Deidara, Hidan and Itachi fainted on the floor, Tobi has a red trickle coming from his nose area under his mask, Kisame and Zetsu are both alarmingly red, Kakuzu is seen outside fighting some white-haired pervert peeking in through the hideout windows, Sasori is studying Konan’s body with an interest that’s somehow more frightening than the others’, and Nagato is rushing up with a blanket up cover her.

-Kakashi walking down the aisle to Gai in a beautiful wedding dress, being escorted by Naruto and Sasuke on each arm, with all of the ninken holding different parts of his veil-train. Sakura is at the top of the aisle holding Gai’s wheelchair, monitoring his IV bags. He’s not fully healed from his war injuries yet but he insisted on doing this as soon as he could speak again. Lee and Ten-Ten are Gai’s “best men”.

-Hidan gets accidentally blown to bits by one of Deidara’s bombs. Loses everything but his head. Kakuzu tells Sasori that since it was HIS partner who caused this, he should be the one to make Hidan a new body. Sasori agrees. But after awhile Kakuzu comes to him and tells him to delay his progress by a few weeks. Turns out taking care of just Hidan’s head is a LOT easier (and stress-free) than keeping up with Hidan as a whole body.

"Healing" for Nagato week and specifically, Nagato's birthday

I like the trope of characters' life improving manifesting through weight gain, and weight gain being portrayed as good and a celebration. Personally I've never been happier in my life (in general considering it all) and it's also where I'm at my fatest. I like reflecting personal stuff in my art so here we are. I love portraying Nagato in happier timelines where he has more time to care for himself. The scars are still there but he's being better and has one of his best friend by his side, who's also doing better little by little.

hello❤ first of all you're one of my fav artist out there and I really appreciate your work.

My question is about Pain x Konan. I just read your explanation of PainKona ship and their whole concept and I couldn't agree more. very well said. I literally felt what Pain's whole concept means for Konan.

My question is: while Pain is Yahiko's shell and his living memory, the only thing that's left from him that Konan can't let go, personally it's still Nagato, so what's your opinion on that? what's Nag's intention? does he have any feelings for Konan deep down, but touching her with Yahiko's body makes it more Ok for him, since Yahiko was the one Konan was in love with? Or is he just roleplaying Yahiko for Konan? Or maybe both?!

Once I read a genius fanfic (unfortunately I can not find it now) about Pain and Konan's relationship, where they would have physical interaction, because Konan would still associate the body with Yahiko and she would close her eyes and pretend it was him, while it was Nagato all along, who was doing that just to make Konan feel better, but in the end both of them would feel even worse. I mean, this is actually REALLY DARK, but considering the fact that Nagato canonically did roleplay Yahiko sometimes and both, him and Konan lost themselves and part of their minds after everything that happened to them that makes sense.

I wanna know your opinion, because I think you're the one, who has the deepest analysis on all three of them.

I feel honoured that you're curious to know my opinions about the dynamic of Nagato and Konan's relationship, it makes me incredibly happy ❤️ I'm gonna start answering this below the cut because it's gonna be long! 😆 (Also, I have a couple works about PainKona that are over one year old and finished on my folders... I never published them because I'm still revising them. Your ask has encouraged me to work harder on the final touches to finally publish them, so thank you again!).

Whenever I think about how Nagato feels about his role in PainKona, two things come in my mind:

First, what PainKona is (and isn't), and what exactly "separates" platonic love from romantic love.

Yes, in that one PainKona ask, I hardly mentioned Nagato at all, even if Pain is Nagato. That is weird, isn't it? I mean, when talking about a ship, why would a person barely mention one of the characters in the ship?

One of the reasons I think PainKona is so amazing, is the fact that it welcomes so many interpretations that work so well, even if they're completely different. You asked my opinion on how Nagato feels about it... So, before that, allow me to give some more "universal" opinions on what I think PainKona is or isn't. (Not with the intention of gatekeeping/making rules, but in the aspect of what makes sense for the characters to do and feel... as humans, in my view).

PainKona isn't like most ships. Most ships are the relationship between two people - PainKona is three people; Nagato, Konan and Yahiko, because Pain isn't a person... He's a being that is both Nagato and Yahiko. He's Nagato in soul, in mind, in actions, in existence - and he's Yahiko in body, in appearance, in the very concept.

Reading PainKona fanfiction is always an adventure, because we never know what exactly Pain will be. Will he be Nagato, inhabiting Yahiko's shell? Will he be Yahiko, forced into life by Nagato's will? He's both, and neither, and something else.

PainKona is not NagaKona, simply because if Konan wants Nagato only, why would she do it through the dead body of her best friend (and lover)? Why? Why would she do something so needlessly traumatic and disgusting? Nagato and her live in the same building; they're just a few floors apart. Saying that Nagato would "need" Yahiko's body to satisfy her because of his injuries and movement limitations would just be outright ableist (or uncreative at best). Nagato and Konan have an universe of possitibilities and interactions, regardless of Yahiko's/Pain's existence.

Now... Pain. Pain is Yahiko undead, scarred with metals everywhere - Konan may think he's an aberration created by hers and Nagato's suffering, or maybe she thinks he's a beautiful divine being carefully crafted by them. Whatever that is... She would need a strong reason to want to deal with the thing that Pain is.

Here is where YahiKona takes place. Konan's love for Yahiko would be the reason that makes all of this be worth it - that's why I think PainKona is fundamentally, conceptually based on YahiKona, and that's why I answered the previous ask focusing on YahiKona.

But PainKona being the "other side of the same coin" of YahiKona doesn't mean that Nagato isn't part of it. He is, of course. Nagato is right there, between Yahiko and Konan - and this is where it all gets even more interesting.

Now, to my opinion - I hope this isn't disappointing, but I don't have one single view or opinion on PainKona and what Nagato feels... since I don't have a single opinion on Nagato's emotions to begin with.

Yahiko and Konan love each other - both as friends and as partners. They romantic love extends a love that already exists platonically, making it deeper, bigger... they love each other completely in both ways, and we know that; we're shown this. We also know they love Nagato, and Nagato loves them, and that this love is different from the love they have for each other.

But how exactly is it different? What is it that makes a relationship romantic?

What is the difference between the love you feel for your partner and for your best friend?

The more I think, the less answers I have. "Sex", one can argue - but romantic and sexual attraction are different things. Asexual romantic relationships exist, as well as sex without any kind of attachment. "Non-sexual physical intimacy", then - but what exactly is that? Don't we hug our friends? Don't we miss being close to them? "Quality time..." Well, that works for both. "Thinking they're the most beautiful beings in the world" - classicaly romantic, but that deep kind of admiration also works for platonic love, especially life-long friendships.

I don't think there's one answer. I think every person has their own personal feelings for what draws the line between romance and friendship for them; for some people, that difference may be huge - for others, the difference may be a tiny, little detail that is so abstract they can't ever explain, even if they know it's there.

That's how I see Yahiko/Konan and Nagato; all that love is almost entirely the same, equally strong in everyway, just different in a few small key aspects. (Unrelated to PainKona, but - this question about "friendship and romance" is what my story Night Watch is about).

So, finally, to answer your question... In my opinion, what does Nagato think and feel when he's there, right inside the romantic love of Yahiko and Konan?

Most of the time, I like to think his feelings come from a place of extreme platonic love.

Nagato loves Konan - always has. She's the angel who saved him from death when he was about to starve and drown under the rain - she's his best friend. He saw her grow up, he witnessed everyday the little details of how the friendship between Yahiko and her transitioned into romantic love. Nagato (canonically) supported their romance - he (Akatsuki Hiden canonically) wished they would have children that would be his family too. And he, of course, saw how all of this was destroyed when Yahiko died - he understood her suffering, how it was both similar and different than his.

That's why I put that manga panel from Chapter 373: Nagato always wanted to protect Konan and Yahiko, no matter what he needed to do or sacrifice.

Nagato turned the peaceful Akatsuki into a terrorist organization. He poured war and violence on the world. He turned Yahiko's body into a puppet to keep him "alive". If he could use Pain to ease a little bit of Konan's pain, wouldn't he do it? If he needed to roleplay Yahiko, would he refuse it? He already pretends (or lied to himself until he ended up believing) that he is a God. Would pretending to be the person whose skin he's literally inhabiting be so different?

Now, I won't say I think it's always completely platonic - the "line" between romantic and platonic love may be so small, so ungraspable, so abstract... it may end up moving.

At least in canon, Konan never loved Nagato the way she loved Yahiko - Nagato never received that kind of love from her. Now, with PainKona, even if Konan is directing her love to Yahiko's remains, even if Nagato doesn't actually want that kind of love, he is receiving it. At the end of the day, she's giving that to him. Yahiko is simply not there, no matter how much they pretend.

Maybe Nagato is always aware that he's not the object of this love, and accepts it anyway, because he knows it matters for her. Maybe he sometimes forgets, maybe there are moments where he believes - even if for a second - Konan is looking at him in that way, and it ignites in him something he had never felt before. Maybe he's not imagining things, and Konan is looking at them both like that - or maybe she avoids the sight of the Rinnegan completely, and Nagato closes his eyes when they're together.

Maybe Nagato is caring to her, treating her the way Yahiko would, because it makes her feel loved, because it makes him feel a little better with himself for being able to help her somehow. Maybe this is always an act, a forced pretending - or maybe it becomes easy, natural, because he actually wants to do all those things Yahiko always did.

Maybe he starts to understand why Yahiko loved her the way he did - and, in that understanding, he finds a way to that love too, a love of his own. Maybe it only deepens the platonic love he feels, but never gets quite there. Or maybe it does.

But it's PainKona, not NagaKona, and even if Nagato's platonic love turns romantic, even if Konan also finds this same love for Nagato, she still loves Yahiko - she still loves him more than she will ever love Nagato, and he knows. He understands. Maybe he doesn't want her to ever love him more, because her love is the only thing he hasn't stolen from Yahiko yet.

Maybe Nagato takes his part in PainKona to keep the concept of "Yahiko and Konan" alive, just like he keeps "Yahiko" alive. He's God, after all - he has the power to create and shape the world.

Or maybe, it's all much more simple than that - Nagato keeps helping Konan, because that's what he does, that's what he wants - to protect her. Nagato is Pain, and Pain is Yahiko, and so he is Yahiko. He does what Yahiko would do. If it helps only a little, it's already so much more than nothing.

Like YahiKona, I think PainKona is pretty much "friendship" based. Not only friendship, of course - it can be cold and sex centered, too. Maybe Konan wants Pain just for sex - why not? Pain isn't Yahiko, but he is still his flesh. It will still feel the same inside of her. Unlike his soul, Yahiko's body is there... If Nagato uses it for evil, for killing, why can't he use it for pleasure, for unharmul actions? (Hardly anyone talks about it, but for many people sex is a basic need, and they may crave sex with their loved one who has passed. It's normal. They miss their loved one in every way. Why would this be different? Well, it's not. In the real world, though, no one has the possibility Konan has with Pain).

Why Nagato indulges her through Pain is certainly love based, romantic or platonic. Regardless if he likes it. Regardless if he finds himself craving it, or hating it, or neither or both.

I hope I didn't give you a frustrating answer. My opinion of Nagato's side of PainKona changes depending on my mood - all the scenarios I described here are things I think/have thought making some particular drawings, or some stories I have written/am writing.

Mostly, I like to think that they are friends, and that they are trying to survive; PainKona is born from this raging sea of immense platonic love, of romantic love enduring, of sadness, of affection, of hatred, of hope, of the fundamental coldness of trying to love something to mask the emptiness of not having someone.

Despite of all the different scenarios, what never changes to me is the main motive that drives Nagato to be a part of PainKona; his sincere love for Konan, his desire to protect her - and the longing he feels to make her happy, if only for a few moments. She's his best friend, after all, and the only family he has left.

I do think he feels guilt, as if he's betraying Yahiko in a way. Konan and him were a couple - he was not part of it, and yet he's there. Maybe he hates every second of it - or maybe he enjoys it, and the more he likes it the guiltier he feels, and so he tries to hate it even if he doesn't want to. Or maybe he doesn't feel guilty at all, because he thinks Yahiko would approve of it, since they were all three friends who loved each other.

TL;DR: What I try to convey in all of my works of PainKona is that sense of "care" that comes from Nagato. He's doing it because he cares for Konan, regardless of what exactly the love he feels is. He's doing it because he understand what Yahiko was, what he meant for her - he too never healed from Yahiko's death; Yahiko was irreplaceable for them both.

And yes, I think that despite all of the effort, it only hurts them more. They hold each other's hands and try to crawl out of the abyss, only to fall deeper each time.
