For the writing asks:
👀🤡😈🤗
and 🧠 for Alex?
If that’s too many feel free to pick and choose! Hope you’re having a good day :)
Hey there! It is not too many, and I have in fact rambled quite a lot:
👀 Tell me about an up and coming wip please!
So, whether this will actually be posted is anyone's guess since I've been starting and not finishing things, but my focus right now is the genderfluid!Lucy + Director Sanvers sex convo that I never thought I'd post, so that's been fun to start digging into again. The vibes I'm going for are probably like "To love and to be loved"—them figuring out boundaries together, a little fumbling, and a lot of love. And it kicks off with an airborne packer, hence "dick fic" in my tags lol (kudos to @endersbegin for that setup and for nudging me to write!)
🤡 What’s a line, scene, or exchange you’ve written that made you laugh?
I do not consider humor a skill of mine 😅. I think my attempts at humor end up as silliness rather than wit, and I wouldn't say I laughed, but this one was fun in "I love you snow much":
“The view is beautiful.” Alex [said.]
“It is.” [Lucy's eyes dragged] over Alex and Maggie for a moment. “The lake and forests aren’t bad either.”
Maggie snorted... “That’s the best line you could come up with, Lane? Sounds like you’re finally running out.”
Here, it's (a) me enjoying the lightheartedness, and (b) me grinning at myself for kinda lampshading this moment, where I'm like, I'm not witty enough to properly write Lucy like that, so I'm going to write an eyeroll-inducing line and then try to convince you that Lucy's usually better than that.
😈 Has there been a point in a story where you did something just to be playfully mean to your readers?
Hmm, I'm pretty nice I think, so not really! Or like, if I'm mean to a character (and I suppose the reader by extension), then it's usually not in a playful way 😅.
🤗 What advice would you give to new fanfic writers that are just getting started?
Common advice, but it bears repeating: write what you want to read. Writing is (or at least can be) super hard! But hopefully it's also enjoyable, and a little bit (or a lot) of some self-indulgence is one of the best ways to make it fun, imo. I think that's especially true when you're first starting out—just building up some experience writing fic does a lot on its own. You can worry about the minutia in later fics or later edits. So I'd say that writing begets writing, and the most important thing is to just put some words down on the page and enjoy the journey.
🧠 Pick a character, and I’ll tell you my favorite headcanon for them—for Alex
A nb!Alex hc snippet, because I couldn't restrain myself:
The first time they see a nonbinary character on TV, it doesn't do much for Alex. And maybe that's weird, they wonder. They couldn't tear their eyes away from the screen while going through the list of shows and movies that Maggie gave them, the ones with women and sidelong glances and touches and kisses.
But whatever, it's fine. Alex figures that the representation just isn't all that important to them anyway. They've started volunteering at the LGBTQ center with Maggie and Lucy when they can, and that by itself—seeing kids grow into themselves, and actually setting up a nonbinary young adult as a mentor for kid who's not quite sure what he is—that's a type of fulfillment that Alex hasn't found anywhere else.
So Alex shrugs and doesn't worry about it. Adding a nonbinary character as a criterion for finding what to watch would make it that much harder when they were already trying to account for their girlfriends' tastes.
It's not until later, cuddling in the middle of the couch next to Lucy, a barely-awake Maggie propped against the arm, that Alex really gets it. Because this time, this character, this story—
The work part of Alex's brain that never completely shuts down wonders if someone has finally managed to hack into human brains, because with each passing moment, mere pixels and sound waves resonate more with something tucked away inside them until feelings come surging up to the surface.
"You okay?"
Alex startles, hurrying to blink away the tears Lucy's spotted. "Yeah." They try to compose themselves, pulling their hand away from Maggie's to wipe at the corners of their eyes. "Yeah, I just..." They make some sort of noise in an attempt to explain, finally letting their head fall against Lucy's shoulder, sighing when she kisses their temple.
"I thought you might like this one," Maggie stirs, finding Alex's hand again and squeezing.
"Yeah," Alex says weakly.
"Yeah?" Maggie sits up off the sofa arm, shedding the vestiges of her half-sleeping state to study Alex. "It's okay if you don't. I didn't mean for it make you cry."
"No." Alex picks her head back up, shaking it back and forth. "No, these are good tears. I, I really loved it."
"I'm glad." Maggie smiles and tucks herself into Alex's side when they hold their arm out.
"You going back to sleep?"
"Probably shouldn't," she says, closing her eyes anyway.
[Okay sorry to abruptly end, but I'm cutting myself off because this is just fluff now 😅]

Ive come to the realization that the reason theres a small but loud group of people who are showing nothing but hate for the rwrb movie is because they have completely unrealistic expectations. People are forgetting that this is a cheesy romantic comedy, thats supposed to look and feel like a cheesy romantic comedy. This isnt going to be moonlight or gods own country or some other critically acclaimed, oscar nomintaed queer film that makes straight people go "hmm maybe they do deserve rights and respect🤷‍♀️"
Its gonna be a cheesy adult romantic comedy, thats gonna be a bit camp and over the top and thats exactly why its so good. I dont want to think about every gay movie I watch. I want to watch it and see two queer people fall in love and thats it. Thats how deep it goes. Maybe a sprinkling of politcal commentary in between.
There is this issue thats become bigger and bigger every passing year, that people expect every bit of queer representation to be the best thing ever. There can not ever be anything cringey or different or silly, and if it is then they send endless hate towards it, and in an industry that already hates to show queer people on screen, its this viscious cycle of someone finally being greenlit to make queer media, the media gets endless hate for not being perfect, the studio cancels the queer media before giving it a chance because theyve just 'proven that it wont make money', suddenly everyone is saying 'why do they keep canceling queer media😢', cycle repeats.
Im so over it. Let gay people be slightly cringy or cheesy or campy. Let queer media exist without putting it on this huge pedestal. Just enjoy things! And if you dont, dont watch it! Move on, find something better to do.
Yes!!! Thank you so much anon for putting this feeling into words much better than I could have!
"I dont want to think about every gay movie I watch."
Thank you.
I want light-hearted rom coms about queer adults just being queer adults and havig fun. I want comedy adventures where the characters just happen to be gay. I want more horror where at the end the final girl kisses a girl and can't belive they lived but not because they're gay. (suprisingly several of these exist and I love it)
I don't always want to think about the plight and horrors of being queer today with every queer movie I watch.
Sometimes, yes of course, I want to be seen on that level.
(Nimona, which came this weekend is a perfect example of a queer movie where I felt very very seen but also had a good time and was an incredibly silly fantasy adventure movie. But, still had the queer expereince intertwined.)
I'm looking forward to a movie that will be 90% rom com, and 10% realism/heavyness. re: being outed is a real thing that happens to people. famous people.
Alex and Henry go through some heavy shit. There's seriously traumatizing stuff at the end of the book. They're both dealing with mental illnesses, complex families, and rock-or-a-hard-place situations. I want all of that honored.
And, at the same time, I'm expecting a straight-to-streaming, mid-budget, movie that had to pass through a LOT of straight hands and board meetings to get to us.
Not to say we should love and accept every queer movie that comes out automatically, they have been done wrong in the past. (example: I skipped call me by your name bc the age gap still makes me too uncomfortable to watch)
But we have to give queer movies a chance to fit the genre they were made for, the tone they are made to be, and give queer creators a chance to show they are us annd they know us. The director is Bi. He's spent so much time going on about how much he related to Alex that he needed to make this movie. It's his first directing role, and I'm giving him a chance.

Hi Tumblr Gaysite. I have a question. I'm a cis writer with a few LGBT+ characters and I have some questions about how to word certain things and develop them. Not just for potential marketing, but so I better understand how to write them. These questions may sound offensive or dumb but I come from a point of ignorance.
First, I have a nonbinary 13 year old (assigned male at birth). This is not a spoiler- due to plot circumstances, they reveal it to the MC soon after meeting him (when those circumstances are not in play, they are more secretive). They kind of fuck around with gender presentation. So maybe genderfluid is more accurate? As they've used they/them pronouns from conception, though, I'm sticking with nonbinary (or at least those pronouns).
Again, these are all cis idiot questions. I'm speaking from a position of minimal understanding.
I've seen on posts here that being nonbinary is a form of being transgender. Is that true? If it is, that means I have more resources for additional research.
What is being genderfluid? Not fully sure what that means, so I don't know if it really applies to them.
How would puberty effect them? They are somewhat shy about their body already. But I think the characters might take a few years to figure out the plot (with the MC already having a design for when he's a young adult). So they'll definitely start appearing more masculine.
Then not pertaining only to that character-
This part is a spoiler, so it can't be used as a marketing buzzword. And I'm not sure if it will happen. But the nonbinary character may start dating a cis female character. Is pansexual the right word to refer to her in that case?
Finally, are there any extra guides for writing trans/nb characters in general? There's a few more in another work. They might benefit from something like that.
Note I might turn off notifications for this post after getting a lot of responses and/or if shit hits the fan. I'll try to respond to as many as possible.

BE VIGILANT. I LOVE YOU.
Shivers as a human! Design notes / process below the cut.
Electrochemistry / Visual Calculus / Composure
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I did a lot of design work for this one! I wanted to incorporate ideas from the cloths that give shivers (sans heimdall shirt couldnt really make that one work) and the suzerainty flag, as well as the bow collector thought. i was also really fixated on the ideas of having the electric shock be shaped like the antler (from the resistance) as well as her having twin braids (came to me in a dream). I also wanted her to look a bit ragged, and have red hair similar to cuno & cunoesse because i like to think that the city is very in touch with them.
Tumblr media
Ended up going with the (modified) fourth design with the fur from the coat, the short cape with colour from the flag but also shape from the rcm cloak, the scarf around the waist, and the bow collector as a charm hanging onto the strings holding the cape together. The last one didn't really show up very well in the final product, but it's a detail i really like.
(The designs are messy and on a lined bg bc I did them during class in a note taking app lmao)
Tumblr media
Pose thumbnails! i set out thinking for sure i would be doing the top right one bc it just felt right to me, but i did more anyways and ended up with one that i liked more. goes to show that you should always try sketching out a few options!
Tumblr media
lineart + colour test. i decided to change my usual lineart brush for a cleaner feel since i wanted to heavily render this one so that the city painting wouldnt look out of place, and boy was that a good idea. i also found a really nice brush set for painting and like. holy shit !! its so good. i went so hard on this piece partly bc the brush made painting feel really rewarding. I also learned about the models in csp and how to pose them while working on this piece! i learned a lot working on this and its probably the piece im most proud of.

Alright as we draw near the end of the transrightsreadathon I thought I would post some recomendations of books by authors who are trans. I'm a huge fan of sff series so here are the first books in 4 series that really worked for me. They are exciting, romantic, brutal and thoughtful by turns. Each one has a wonderful sense of the world they exist in and the characters that inhabit those worlds and they play with tropes and themes in ways that I found interesting. Many of these have trans characters as well, but not all of them. Most of these authors have other books outside of these series that are also wonderful (you might see some of them in the other reclists that I am going to post). And these are just a handful of examples, there are so many fabulous books by and about people who are trans.
What are some of your favorite series by trans authors? Are there any I should give a try?
Ninefox Gambit by Yoon Ha Lee
She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan
Witchmark by C.L. Polk
A Big Ship at the Edge of the Universe by Alex White

I've already said it before, but I think when you come out as trans you (or a fellow trans friend) should get to throw a party
It should be like a baby shower or a housewarming party too. You give people a little list they can choose from to buy you gender affirming shit, like dresses or a binder, or, like, both.
Bc having to slowly replace your wardrobe and get the gender things you want in a budget can take years, esp if youre young and unused to buying yourself shit at all.
Plus we should get to celebrate that shit. Being trans is a joyous thing. We should get to throw a party about it!

Willex but they're both non binary.
They talk about how as a kid, it always felt weird being a young man, and growing up, their mind shifted when someone referred to them as "that guy" as if they just remembered how they are perceived.
Willie talks about in school, classmates would mock him for putting his hair on a braid and teachers would say he should cut it if he wanted to look respectable, he didn't, he felt pretty with his braided, he liked brushing his hair slowly and curling strands around his fingers, he started to give a middle finger to anyone who made fun of it, but he did wondered "what if i do look like a girl" and the thought never felt weird on his skin.
Alex talks about how he never could quite grasp what it meant to be a man, he used to think he'd never understand and would never fit in, but he figured out that if he tried to hard to act and look like a guy, he'd blow it, so he (unconsciously) took the mannerisms and the slang boys around him used, it wasn't an effort, it wasn't an effort to be around his sister and her friends and the girls at school, til someone called him out and said "boys don't act and don't speak like that" and suddenly he felt like being torn apart, thinking of every move and word and how they appeared to others.
Willie mentions the portion of androgynous kids at his neighborhood and how confident they looked but also how they never floated above the world, simply existing as if none saw smth wrong with them, Willie felt safe under that thought. Alex talks about sneaking into clubs and dancing the whole night and how none cared the way he moved, except to cheer him on it, dance always blurred the lines between masculine and feminine moves, he was just Alex, til someone in the club would compliment him and finish with calling him "girl", with no ounce of mockery, while that didn't made him feel right, didn't made him feel wrong either.
Neither of them ever showed a problem with liking "girl stuff", it was never a secret that Alex had a thing for pink and none in his band ever said smth bad abt it, Willie knew the adults always criticized his hair, his pierced ear and all his bracelets, but he didn't care it was just them being old, most of kids his age were getting those.
Things only became quite clear when they became ghosts and entered the new queer generation, that talked loudly about gender non conforming people and mixed up pronouns. Sure it sounded like a whole mess, but Willie was all about the mess. Alex was startled by how everything came to surface so fast and had a ton of questions.
Julie was already used to answering his questions, so after explaining what gender non conformity is and non binary different labels to Alex and Willie, she proposed to make experimentation party. Flynn was invited, the boys were there to mess around, everyone was trying on makeup and painting nails, cross dresing, some harmful mockery was made by Luke and Reggie but dutifully corrected by the girls, leaving even Willie and Alex with a new lesson. God, how awful was their time? Of course Luke and Reggie apologized, even Alex apologized because he never thought that jokes like were actually harmful.
After their little party, it wasn't unusual for them painting nails, even Reggie was wearing more eyeliner before their gigs (hell knows how he applied it without a mirror) but it was for fun. It felt different for Willie to have his nails painted and putting on girl shorts, for Alex, it was about intertwined terms when referring to him. It felt so new to both of them, and different, and old. It felt like realizing he was gay again. Willie was the first to tell Alex he didn't felt like he was boy entirely, like it was okay for him to behave like one, but he didn't felt attached to it like an identity, Alex said it was okay and that he'd still be his boyfriend.
As Willie started to present way more androgynous than before, now as a conscious decision, Alex started to question himself about that, spiraling again about what changes he'd had to adapt to if he thought about his gender identity. It was so easy for Willie, just changing without really changing. But for Alex, it carried multiple questions like, would that make him not a guy anymore? Would he still be gay? Would he have to come out again? What if he asked to change pronouns? "You don't have to do anything." Julie said. "There aren't rules to be non binary, hon, you see me? I'm genderfluid but i just love being girly." Flynn said. "And if there were, they certainly wouldn't apply to us." Willie said. Alex wanted to give it a chance. He didn't wanted to make a big deal out of it, so he just gave everyone a heads up before starting practice.
"She as in...girl?" Luke asked when Alex told he was going by he/she now. "Yeah." Alex didn't felt like explaining everything inside of it, sounded too complicated for the first conversation they were having about it. "Cool. Is that it?" And before Alex could say yes, Willie called out and said he was also changing pronouns, going only by they/them. Sure, everyone said. Reggie got confused and had the same questions Alex did when he spiraled about it, Alex said it didn't had to change anything, he was still alex, still gay, still their drummer, "whatever change it is, it's good change." They said. Alex agreed.
Except Alex didn't changed that much apart from being referred as her, being called girlfriend occasionally by his partner, and Reggie ranking girl petnames, Alex was okay with princess but not with dollface. Especially when Reggie added a southern accent to it. Willie changed, a hundred times, going back and forth. Alex liked their changes and celebrated each one.
So Alex and Willie were most definitely not girls, but they weren't exactly attached to being guys either. They were just ghosts. A ghost drummer, a ghost skater and each other's ghostfriend.

i question if my gender leans more towards the butch end of things since I share very few other experiences with the trans guys I know other than desires for presentation and basic respect.... I think my issue is not having many guys in my life who aren't so attached to being a "cis macho man who is also an asshole but women like him anyways"
