Episode 208: What Fans Owe Each Other
In Episode 208, “What Fans Owe Each Other,” Flourish and Elizabeth share a letter from longtime friend-of-the-pod @destinationtoast about whether we can make fandom culture kinder and more nuanced (spoiler: they take a far more pessimistic stance than Toast!). Topics discussed include good old-fashioned “netiquette,” whether we’re at the end of big social media, the dangers of toxic positivity, and systemic versus individual change. They also share and respond to a pair of listener comments on the recent “Fanfluencers” episode, and the way fans’ comments online connect back to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

Literally the big reason trolling/cyberbullying/discourse on the internet has arguably gotten worse in recent years is that the insane asylum that is Twitter has created a generation of internet users who don’t know the only effective method of stopping it, which is to say DON’T FEED THE TROLL.
Instead, now we’ve got a buttload of inexperienced teens, wannabe social activists, and celebrities who think the solution to trolling is to engage full-force with every single troll, to battle them, to call as much attention to them as possible with callout posts, to “totally own” them with FACTS and LOGIC, to factcheck them, to make weepy cryposts about how awful it is that the trolls are doing this and how deeply affected you are by it, or make ”brave and noble” posts about the trolling so you can virtue signal call for the community to be better and white knight defend the honor of the poor hapless victim.
And of course all this does is encourage the trolls to further extremes, because they don’t care about being right (factually or morally) or “winning” they’re just looking to get a reaction out of you to troll you and now that you’ve given them a taste they’ll want even bigger reactions like a drug addict desperately chasing the feel of their first high. Whether these isolated patches of a few hundred (MAYBE a thousand or so) morons in a nation of tens of millions actually believe the idiocy they spew is irrelevant, the reaction and attention is all they really want, hence why they almost always stop if you just ignore or block them.
Like unless you are a literal child or have some kind of disability or mental illness that somehow prevents you from knowing any better, there’s no excuse. Just block or ignore the dumb messages and comments. Its not that hard. I have gotten plenty of hate messages in my years on Tumblr (I have a new blog because I deleted my old one, but trust me, I have been here since this site’s golden days), literally each and every single one I dealt with by just… not responding.
It works. EVERY SINGLE TIME.
If you can’t wrap your head around this, then there are four possibilities; you’re part of a younger generation who was not taught basic netiquette (in which case you have my sympathy but you NEED to learn), you’re a child or teenager learning the hard way (we’ve all been there), you’re an idiot who doesn’t know how block buttons works, or in the worst case, you’re a prick who uses the trolls to try and get attention/sympathy/clout online or to shield yourself from criticism (this one is ESPECIALLY popular amongst celebs and corporations).

LET ME SHOW YOU MY FIRST INFOGRAPHIC !
Hi guys! It is really nice to see you again on my blog. Today we have a little bit different topic to talk about. Our discussion topic is infographic and its benefit for education. As you know, this blog was created by me for the sake of course assignment. This week we were given a new assignment. Creating an information infographic about ethical and legal issues in educational technology. I used Canva to originate my design. It was very excited to create this type of informative design because it was my first time. I am new here- I mean on social media :) - so it was too hard to handle it for me. But it was fun. Besides from being fun, I think it is also very educational. While teaching process continue students can take benefits from this kind of design. Because of the visual feast it is also unforgettable. This can be useful for students. Also, because this design is far different from the regular course book, it could be a motivation for the students.
Before display my infographic, I want to share my infographic topic. It is netiquette. Have you ever heard this word? For the one who has never heard before , It is combination of two words. Internet and etiquette. Today, nearly everybody uses social media, mail, or anything related to technology. Just as we have some kind of etiquettes on real life to make the world better place to live in, the internet also needs etiquettes ,which is called " netiquette" , to safe and peaceful interaction with people. Is this information make you feel curios? Come on, have a look at my infographic and get information :))

Netiquette - should and shouldn't
Hi there!
If you're not brave enough to say it face to face, don't say it online.
No one needs your opinion!

This is an AO3 tag etiquette post
So I saw a thing where an author was talking about how they weren’t sure at what point in the story to add tags for the relationships in the story.
When you first post
That’s when you put relationship tags.
The tags aren’t “part of the story that’s revealed as you go” the tags are so that your readers can make an informed decision on if they want to read this, if it’s going somewhere that they want to commit to as a reader.
Sometimes you change tags as the story progresses but that’s not a deliberate thing it’s because the story went somewhere you didn’t expect and it’s usually considered polite to mention tag changes and additions in the notes so your readers are aware.
Also, people will find your fic via searching that tag. Or avoid it by excluding that tag because it isn’t something they want to see. Respect that.
Tldr; TAGS ARE SUPPOSED TO TELL YOU WHO’S GOING TO GET TOGETHER EVENTUALLY THATS PART OF THEIR INTENDED PURPOSE

💖 Welcome to Phoenix Rising 💖
My intention is to provide information about my experiences and spiritual knowledge that I have gained.
I wanted to create a positive and healthy community online in my social media platforms so let's be respectful, empathic, and open-minded.
I am a student and practitioner of Bardon's hermetic system. I will also talk about different topics but from a hermetic perspective. I can only tell what I am allowed to tell to the public.
You can ask me anything related to occultism and spirituality! Keep in mind that I mostly talk about my experiences and perspective and so other people have different and unique experiences.
I also make subliminal videos in my YouTube channels so I hope you can check them out!
Seek first understanding and you will enter the Temple of Initiation. Be humble and you will unlock the Door of the Mysteries. Peace be upon us.
꧁ ★☯︎ ☽︎ ❤︎ ☾︎ ☯︎ ★ ꧂
IMPORTANT NOTES:
My content is mostly about occultism and my personal experiences.
My beliefs are not absolute truth. Take them with a grain of salt.
Please be respectful and understanding whenever you are interacting with someone online. This is called Netiquette. If you do not agree with someone or understand something, you can politely ask for clarification. Plus, with so many perspectives in the universe, we do not have to agree with everything, but it does not mean that you have to be disrespectful or arrogant.
Disrespectful and weird comments and messages would be deleted. Do it several times and you'll be blocked.
I don't entertain fanatics and extremists of all kinds.
If you are going to say something, make sure it is respectful, true, timely, and relevant to the topic.
If you do not understand something and for some reason, you are also not doing your own research and/or you are close-minded, then do not say anything about the topic.
Stop moralizing. You are not a universal judge.
Do not make anything so complicated. Some people would give a completely different and twisted meaning to something even if it is not the intention of the author.
If you are easily triggered by something, it simply means you have to heal something within yourself. External factors can trigger our shadow, but our shadow is our greatest teacher. Therefore, do not project your pain to others. It would only make you suffer more.

Are we not allowed to give our opinions on here too? I wasn't even being disrespectful about it. Just wanted to state why I didn't have an issue with it.
You are allowed, but as someone who receives a lot of asks, there are two types that I find difficult to deal with.
Type 1: The "Well, I like it / Well, I disagree" ask
I make a post about something I dislike, giving the arguments why this story-decision doesn't vibe with me. And then anon comes in and says, "but I like it". It's very hard to answer to that. I'm not a public message board like Reddit or an independent journal that needs to balance and reflect all opinions. When I say what I like or don't like about a story decision, it is obviously my opinion and I don't expect everyone to agree with it. But I also don't go out reading takes I don't like, though I may go and read the takes of people whose opinion I'm interested in and I value (because of their activity / the spaces they created). So an anon coming and saying "but I like it" just feels dismissive, invalidating and intrusive from someone I don't know, whose opinion I'm not seeking responding to something I feel. It's not helpful in any way, especially when the opinion just ignores everything I've said. I do two things with these types of asks - I either delete them and fume quietly, or post them and get snappy, because they feel invalidating.
Please understand that this blog is my space. When I post something, I don't go into your space. You come here on you own accord to read what I think. But when you send me an ask, you come into my space. So when I'm upset about a story decision - the "but I like it ask" from an anon I've had no prior dialogue with is a very unwelcome intrusion into my space and it just feels like you want to use my "platform", "my space" to project your views without putting effort into building your own.
If you create a space and post your opinions, I'm likely to come across them, because I do follow bnha meta tags, and I'm interested in what people have to say as long as they put something thoughtful on their blogs.
Type 2: The "Exactly - repeats the entire point I just made" ask
Like, dude, I'm glad you agree. You can reblog and put your "ditto" into the tags or just add a reply. It makes me feel bad to just delete the ask, but I also don't want to put something completely redundant on my blog, cluttering "my space".
The ask champions
The asks I love are the ones that develop another angle / put a new perspective / add something to what I posted about.
And if you want to disagree with someone's opinions, I do recommend composing your asks in a way that's not immediately invalidating. For example: "yeah, I see where you are coming from / what you said is a good point. Have you considered though..."
Because remember - when you are sending an ask, you are coming into my space. I'm not going into yours.

@dumbey You might be new to tumblr, so telling you right now, one or two notes is fine; but I’ve recently learned that OPs tend not to like it when you have extended discussions in the notes of their post, especially not when their reblog chains are already getting long.  If you’d like to continue this discussion, do it by reblogging this post, here.

Listen. I know a lot of you are new to fandom or to tumblr, and we love that you're here, but I have to tell you this: If you are reposting someone's work, that is not cool. (Reposting includes anything like saving images from a post and making a new post with them, copying and pasting the text from a post into a new post, or stealing the text from an image set and using it exactly the same way in a new post on your blog.) Just reblog the original post. All you have to do is use the button that looks like this:

So simple. So easy. So much better. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
