I've been catching up with the spanish dub of One Piece (the dub is progressing, they are still in Marineford), and they made Sanji more down bad it's funny LMAO
Just like in the Japanese dub, he calls Nami 'swan' or in spanish 'Cisne Nami' but the difference here is Robin. Kudos to the translators and the people who had to make the scripts for the VAs, because he calls her "Tigresa Robin", which means Tigress Robin. This man is down badly and creative 😔😔

I’ve posted my first time viewing thoughts on season 1 of rebels, now here’s the same for the first half of the second season!
first of all: @intrepidmare commented that the reason why rebels animation gets a lot of flack compared to tcw is because it had a smaller team and budget and less production time, but that it improves in later seasons (hablo un poquito español, lo siento!). i should clarify, i don’t think the animation for rebels is all bad, I’m actually very fond of how much more fluid it is! familiar stuff looks really off to me right now (stormtroopers, lando, obi wan, lightsabers), newer stuff looks better (the grand inquisitor, hera). i didn’t like tcw style at first either. it took me time to get used to it, but i did. i bet that by the end of season 4, I’ll have stopped complaining about it.
Siege of Lothal duology
-they’ve stopped translating karabast into caramba in the captions. huh.
-tua seems more frightened by tarkin than vader? politicians are strange creatures no matter what galaxy you’re in I guess
-it makes sense that kanan doesn’t want to get involved in a wider scale conflict, as a Jedi he probably had more direct experience fighting in the clone wars, so he’s more disillusioned with armies and wars than hera is. of course the small scale Robin Hood stuff is more his speed. also, i love how they feel like real adults with different outlooks on life. sabine and ezra are great, but i can’t stand most teenagers (and i literally am one!)
-alright, I’m at the 10:39 mark and I’m betting now that the secret other reason for lothal’s importance is kaiburr mining. it would explain why a seeming backwater planet is so important to the empire to justify sending vader and tarkin, why there’s a Jedi temple there, and ezra finding a crystal in said temple. maybe I’m right, maybe I’m wrong.
-all this about what zeb smells like, even from himself, and i still have no idea what he smells like. bad like a wet space dog? something else?
-vader baby! i know it’s a departure from live action, but i like the red eye pieces, they seem more realistic for looking out of
-damn Vader’s tall. i keep forgetting that
-“if that doesn’t kill him what will?” “not us” kanan, you have no idea how true that is
-burning the refugee camp to the ground.. we’re pretty far away from stealing fruit noe
-the way they all go with Hera to fight vader, Hera straight up saying “alright kids do mom and dad proud”… this show was literally designed for me to vicariously experience a unified family. fellow “my dad went to get milk and never came back” kids, children of divorce, and/or people who have been disowned by their families how are we feeling. this show definitely isn’t perfect but it’s some of the best escapism for me in particular. screw that team as family but they’re just close friends, team as family found family is where it’s at
-oooo, ahsoka and anakin back in each other’s orbits. i can’t wait! this is shaping up to be a great season already
The lost commanders, relics of the old republic
-ahh, so this is where filoni gets his reputation for cameos. i can’t really blame him, since as a Star Wars fan and writer myself, i couldn’t say i wouldn’t want to write stuff with my favorite characters. since this is an ensemble show (unlike andor, per se, which benefits from focusing on andor with others in the periphery), my opinion is that it’ll work out as long as our original cast doesn’t get crowded out. aladdin bridger and the rest of his family are who I’m interested in watching at the end of the day after all!
-(I saw that rex was in this one from the episode description) I’m curious as to how/why rex and ahsoka got separated?
-I’m digging Sabine’s new hairstyle, it works for her
-i get that it’s for dramatic tension, but i don’t see why ahsoka isn’t just. telling them who they’re looking for, especially since she’s not going along with them. they don’t know him! if you don’t tell them rex is a clone at least how would they know who they’re looking for?
-sweet walker they’ve got, really reminiscent of the republic walkers. heck, that’s what it is under years of homemaking
-I really like how kanan still doesn’t trust them completely by the end of the arc. he’s moving in that direction, but order 66 is not something that can be forgiven in a day, even taking the chips into account. not being something that’s neatly resolved in an episode it gives it more weight, and kanan feels like a deeper character for it.
Always two there are
-commander fruit. I’m reminded that this show is a gold mine for expanding the worldbuilding in the produce aisle
-the grand inquisitor isn’t dead, is he. no body, cryptic final message, he’s gonna show up again.
-i like how these inquisitors are kind of incompetent. they aren’t getting a full sith course load, and they dropped out of Jedi college. of course they aren’t the best and brightest!
-i may be. unreasonably fond of zeb. i can’t really say why? he’s big. he’s purple. his older brother energy is off the charts. he survived a genocide. he’s comic relief. he smells bad. he’s literally me. he reminds me of one of my uncles. what more can i say?
Brothers of the broken horn
-man this hits a little too close to what being fifteen years old is like. ezra, you have got to get a day planner, they’re silly but they work! that’s also my advice to my ten followers. if you keep forgetting stuff, planner planner planner. no writing it down on scratch paper or making a “mental note.”
-the classic ship in distress trap. very familiar to a Trekkie such as myself, but is less common in the gffa.
-first he’s Jabba the Hutt, now he’s lando Calrissian. forget Jedi training or blaster practice ezra needs to learn how to make up fake names on the fly
-why is the empire shooting at them? they’re bad guys, but i don’t think they’re fire on broken vessels even if they happen to be on one of their checkpoints bad guys
-hondo’s jaw horns have grown with age. makes sense, but looks both strange and inconvenient
-chopper’s homicidal tendencies make him great backup
-how have none of them hit red guy? he’s enormous! he’s bigger than the broad side of a barn and moves just as slow
-fun episode, but i think they could have focused more on how ezra has changed since getting involved with the rebels. the last lines he has with kanan feel like they’re hastily trying to clean up the flaws in the writing at the last minute mark
Wings of the master
-a blockade episode, classic star wars. there aren’t as many distinct episode conventions like there are for Star Trek, but there are a few. the blockade mission is one of them.
-Hera backstory! Hera backstory! I repeat, we have a hera episode incoming!
-i hope we learn more about her childhood on ryloth during the clone wars. I’ve always been interested by the bits and pieces of Twi’lek world building I’ve read, and the ryloth liberation arc from tcw was one i liked. also, i really like hera’s character.
-kanan asks ezra “are you in” about the supply run in the phantom but the Spanish subtitle is closer to “are you with me” (i think. i think that’s how best to translate conmigo)
-quarrie’s a fun character for a one off. biased because I’m an engineering student and he’s an engineer character who actually acts similar to a real one (yes, this is a tony stark callout. we don’t act like that) also, he’s just plain charming
-now that’s a funky ship. i like it!
-why don’t the rebels divide the supplies up on multiple ships? then it would have the same flaws as a video game payload mission
-okay, so it wasn’t a full Hera Episode, but I’ll take it anyways
Blood Sisters
-sabine, the brightly painted mandalorian… selected for a mission which needs a low profile
-and the way they’re finding this courier is by asking a bunch of people in the port an unusual code? that seems like the opposite of low profile too
-ketsu’s haircut is… hilariously bad. good lord, what’s wrong with a buzz cut if you want to keep it practical?
-i like the backstory we’re getting with sabine a lot
-I’m also noticing that basically all of the human characters who aren’t imperial are poc. Star Wars is still allergic to brown eyes, which is kind of colorist (featurist? is there a term for colorism that includes physical attributes that aren’t skin tone?), but credit where it’s due. kallus is the white person who shows up the most. (I’m not including non human characters in this assessment, since coding is more finicky for them when in animation) i only noticed when ketsu took off her helmet
Stealth strike
-“gravity well projectors” look don’t take this the wrong way but this is what i mean when I say Star Wars doesn’t feel like science fiction. Star Trek would have pretended to explain it and dune would meticulously plot out how this changes warfare
-i see that this episode was set up to put Rex and kanan in a Situation. and i am totally on board this conflict is so juicy
-i had almost forgotten how much I like rex, but him knowing the emergency codes brought back memories of his clone wars version.
-i wonder if he ever met luke or leia knowing that they were padme and anakin’s children
-holy shit ezra really did sound like hera for a second when he was breaking up rex and kanans squabbling
-they keep calling ezra jabba even after they learn his real name i feel like my brain is leaking out of my ears
-Ezra’s really gotten good at using a lightsaber
-well. guess ezra shouldn’t have told that stormtrooper he wouldnt die in his escape. seeing as the ship was blown to smithereens
The future of the force
-oh there is something wrong with that baby’s face
-“if i never see one of those things again it’ll be too soon” was translated as “espero no ver otra de cosas por toda la eternidad” which directly (if I’m not mistaken) translates to “I hope to never see one of those things again for all eternity” interesting! i wonder if that means Spanish doesn’t have a more direct equivalent to the English phrase “if I never [x] it’ll be too soon?”
-I’ll remember this show as the one that taught me ayudar (to help)
-chopper the baby exploding pile of bolts
-aww, the ithorian baby is so cute. heck, the ithorians just look way cuter in the rebels style. in live action they’re much slimier (which isn’t bad either!)
-also lugar, which means place. this show is pretty good for picking stuff up since I’ve already taken a class on the basics plus growing up with it in my home, even though I was never allowed to actually acquire it
-ahsoka ex machina
-this is shaping up to be a multi part thing, so I expect that some of my questions will be answered: the empire’s presence isn’t as strong in the outer rim, same as the republic, so how are they tracking these force sensitive infants down, especially after the Jedi (and to a lesser extent the force itself) were wiped from memory? and if they’re taking babies, how many have been partially inducted into the dark side by the fall of the empire? are some of them running around, ripe for stories in which they’re villains with potential for redemption after the fall of the empire? there’s so much potential
Legacy
-no room in the budget for pajamas or blankets i see. aren’t you guys the opposite of cozy
-and this show is responsible for teaching me ghost (fantasma)! i can’t believe i forgot. and fleet (flota), and message (mensaje). don’t worry, this won’t turn into a Spanish vocab lesson!
-I was almost certain Ezra’s parents were dead, or if not would die shortly after because.. well, the same reason beru and lars had to die, it’s the classic story move. but that doesn’t diminish the emotional weight of the reveal that his parents are dead because of how excited he gets when there’s hope, and how he openly cries when it’s left him
-the shot of the plain on Lothal after the scene where Ryder is introduced is beautiful visually. natural land and skyscapes is where rebels really shines
-what a lovely episode! sad, but lovely
And this is where I’m wrapping up for now! I’m halfway through season 2, and legacy is a natural midpoint. Thank you for reading this far, making these posts is pretty fun for me :)

Marco’s Home for Lost Boys
Read on AO3 - Chapter 1, Chapter 2
Chapter Two: Emma Swan
The sting of the cold air does not deter Emma from leaning out the window in the small room she had occupied for a few hours. Her tiny feet hit the ground with a quiet thump before she peered back into the house.
They won’t even miss me when they realize I’m gone.
It took hours for the boys to finally quiet down enough that Emma was confident that the small house in the woods was finally still and asleep. She knew she needed to get back to her safe space before the warmth of the home convinced her to snuggle in and stay the night.
She closed her eyes and imagined the route she had taken to get here in her head, mentally pulling up the turns and following them back to the town road. Storybrooke was a quiet town. Only one vehicle had passed her on her travel back to the docks. She was quick to run into the woods to hide herself from the car as it sped by her on the dark road.
A short time later, she slipped through the small space in the fence that led to the docks, the breeze coming off the water causing her to shiver and pull her jacket tighter around her.
Her legs were wobbly as she snuck aboard the ship that had brought her to this town and pulled hard on the door leading to the crate that held her things. She barely realized the sigh of relief that came over her as she found her blanket and backpack hidden in the back of the cold metal box.
She has no home.
She frowned but sank below her little white blanket that barely covered her tiny frame and closed her eyes, trying not to imagine what Marco and his lost boys would think when they woke in the morning.
Just another lost girl without a home.
~
Killian sat up in bed the moment he felt the hands on his arm. He was covered in sweat. He must have been having that dream again. “Sorry was I screaming again?” He reached up to rub the sleep out of his eyes.
“The girl is gone.” Robin’s voice sounded serious and he opened his eyes, looking around the dark room.
“Gone?” He blinked until he could see clearer and saw Robin pulling on his jacket.
“Dad and I are going to drive around and see if we can find her. August is going to stay here with you and Will.”
He moved to leave, and Killian grabbed his arm. “I want to come with, I found that blasted dog last time it escaped.”
“This isn’t a dog, Killian.” He scoffed.
“I can help!” He pleaded and his brother groaned.
“You’re going to be a right pain in the arse until I let you come, aren’t you?” He grinned and jumped out of bed to pull on his clothes and jacket.
“You know me so well, brother.”
Killian knew the girl had the look of someone who was ready to run when they were eating dinner. He’d seen that look in the mirror before he finally settled into the Home for Lost Boys. He’d done the same thing himself when he first arrived at Marco’s, fear in his eyes and anger in the heart of a 6-year-old boy. Almost 4 years later and Killian had lost the fear, but his anger still resided on many occasions.
“Killian, stay in the truck, I’m going to check in with the Sheriff.” He was pulled from his thoughts as he heard the truck door slam shut leaving him alone in the dark with just the glow of the street lamps illuminating his space.
Opening the door, Killian stepped onto the pavement and leaned his back against the old truck. In the distance he heard the horn of one of the ships in the harbor.
Didn’t August say he found her on the docks?
Killian looked around for his dad and Robin who were still in the station. Maybe he understood this girl better than he thought. Maybe he could help her. He pushed off the truck and his steps quickened toward the docks.
He surveyed his surroundings, trying to put himself in the shoes of a 6-year-old girl, scared, lonely, and running. The boat nearest to him was missing its plank and the space was too far for a small girl to jump to. He scanned further down the dock and his eyes spotted the large ship full of metal crates, the plank still attached to the dock.
Bingo.
Once he was on board the ship, he began walking down the aisles of shipping crates, looking at anything that was on the ground that a small child could get into. He tugged on a few of the doors, most not even budging. He was about to give up when his eye caught the red crate with a door sitting slightly ajar.
He pulled the door which swung open with a loud screech. Peering inside the darkness there was movement at the back of the crate.
“Um, I’m a friend. I’m not here to hurt you. Hello?” He took a tentative step into the crate, keeping the door slightly open to let in a stream of light from the harbor. “I’m from Marco’s. Uh, we had dinner. I got you a chair to sit on.” Killian groaned, he sounded like a bloody idiot.
In the dim light he saw a streak of blonde peek up from behind some of the boxes. “I’m coming back to you, please don’t be scared lass.”
He stepped around the box and saw the girl huddled in the corner of the crate, her arms wrapped tightly around her as she sat shivering.
“Hey!” He said with a weak smile. “You cold?” He pulled his jacket from his arms and held it out toward her. “I don’t bite, but you don’t want to catch the plague. You’ll be stuck here a lot longer if you end up in the hospital with flu or something.”
She stood up and yanked the jacket from his hands, pulling it over her shoulders, and cowering back into her corner. Killian tentatively walked closer to her and slid down with his back against the wall of the crate until he was sitting next to her. She stared up at him with emotion in her eyes.
Fear. Apprehension. Distrust.
“I don’t blame you, ya know. For running.” He kept his eyes straight ahead as he spoke. “I did the same when I got to Marco’s. I was just a lad, no older than you, love.” Killian remembers only getting to the town road before Marco had pulled the truck up beside him, handed him a blanket and a cup of hot cocoa and then turning right around in his truck, leaving him at the end of the road with his mouth hung open. Killian had waited thirty minutes before walking himself back to the house and crawling back in his bed. The old man never mentioned it again.
For this girl to have made it all the way to the docks before being found told him she was either already an expert at running or Marco had let his guard down in his old age.
He chanced a look at the blonde and was met with the moonlight shining into two small emerald orbs. He had forgotten what it was like to see someone so innocent and yet he was overwhelmed with the amount of sadness these eyes held. He didn’t know what had happened to the lass, but he was sure if she was out here on her own, it wasn’t good.
“Good form coming to the docks.” He said with a grin. “I’ll let you in on a little secret.” He put his fingers to his lips before continuing. “I come down here to think. The sea speaks to me. Noe of us are supposed to be down here, it annoys Leroy to no end when he finds us here but….” He sighs. “This is where I belong.”
Killian didn’t know why he was telling this child his story. He didn’t even talk to David about his beginnings. He didn’t discuss the reasons for his nightmares. David was his best friend but even he hadn’t earned that space in his head.
“You see, I came to stay with Marco because of the sea.” Her eyebrow shot up and he chuckled when he realized she was hanging on his every word. “My dad used to take me and my brother sailing. We would spend many a day at sea, fishing and sailing from one port to the next. One day when I was naught but your age, we were at sea for a trip up the coast when a storm caught us.” His thoughts returned to that day as he closed his eyes, breathing in deeply before continuing.
“Dad used to say that fighting with my brother Liam, would anger Poseidon.” He heard the girl gasp beside him. “Yeah, Poseidon’s a dick.” He whispered. “Liam and I must have really made him angry that day because the ocean roared up and attacked, turning our little ship over.” He squeezed his eyes to stop any tears from falling. “They found me hanging on to a piece of the wreckage. Dad had always told me that I'm a survivor.”
The girl stirred beside him; he saw a sad smile before she clutched a knitted dirty blanket in her arms and squeezed, hiding her face in the folds.
“Anyway, my dad and Liam are still out there somewhere. And one day I’m going to be a Captain of my own ship and I’m going to sail out and find them.” He resolutely shook his head, one day he would finish the search that no one else would take on. He knew they were out there. They wouldn’t abandon him. They needed him and he wasn’t about to let them down.
“So, I get it, you must be searching for something too. But I just wanted you to know that it’s ok to take a break in your search. Warm bed, delicious food. It doesn’t mean you’re going to stop searching.”
He heard her sniffle, and he took a chance. “Jones, Killian Jones.” She looked up at him. “We didn’t really get an introduction earlier.”
The girl looked at her feet and then back up at his eyes. “So anyway…”
“Emma.” It was said so quietly that if they weren’t in a nearly empty metal crate, he wouldn’t have heard her.
~
She doesn’t know why she decides to talk to him. But she hears her voice squeak when she does.
“Emma.”
He turns toward her, a smile on his face.
“It’s nice to meet you Emma. Would you honor me with your last name?”
She frowns.
Doe. No, she refused to be Emma Doe.
“I, uh, I dunno.” She shoves her blanket into his arms. “Just Emma, don't really have a last name.” She sighs as she points to the purple stitching with her name. The only clue she ever had to who she was. The small blanket she was found with, abandoned on the side of a road.
Like Garbage, unwanted.
He carefully takes the blanket, his fingers tracing the stitching of her name.
“Well Emma, what do you say we go back and find Marco. I think you will find him quite relieved to know you are ok.”
Emma knows this isn’t a home. She will never be home. But a warm bed sure does beat this cold metal floor. If Killian can wait to find his family, then she can wait to run off in search of whatever it is she needs to find. She reaches down to grab her dirty rucksack beside her and tugs it onto her shoulders.
She sees the small white toy fall to the ground before she can grab it. She anxiously reaches for the familiar object, but he gets to it first.
“Sorry,” he whispers. He stares at the dirty white toy swan in his hands, the corners of his mouth turning upward. "This is important to you is it?" He asks as he passes the swan toward her.
She nods with a faint smile.
“Swan.” He barely breathes out. “Emma Swan.” He says more firmly.
Emma Swan
A name of her own. No one had ever bothered calling her anything but Emma. Resigned to calling her Doe. No one cared enough to give her permanence.
“Emma Swan.” She says timidly with a small smile.
“Come on Swan, let’s get out of here.” He stands and offers his hand toward her. She grabs her things and stands beside him.
She doesn’t realize when it happens but before her brain even catches up to her, she finds her palm pressed against his as they walk from the docks hand in hand.
~
2 years later
“At least I’m not an orphan.”
“Little lost orphan girl”
“Freak”
Emma was cowering under the playground, her hands over her ears.
“Get outta here.” A familiar voice boomed above the playground.
“Make me.” One of the kids screeched.
“Aye, I can and will if you don’t get the hell out of here.” The other voice bellowed.
“He said hell!” one of the kids screamed, running toward the school.
She looked up to see Killian hunched over. “Swan, you alright, lass?”
Emma scurried out from under the slide. “Yeah, I’m good, Jones. You didn’t have to come to my rescue, I had it handled.” Staring between David and Killian with a pout.
“Yeah, looked handled to me.” David quipped sarcastically.
“Do those kids still do that to you often?” Killian had his arms crossed in front of him.
“Stand down Captain, I don’t need your help.” She saluted him mockingly.
He sighed, “David and I aren’t going to be here next year to keep an eye on you.”
Emma knew that they would be headed to Storybrooke Jr High after the summer. She had gotten used to the boys always having an eye on her.
“Emma, we just want to make sure you are safe.” David stepped closer to her, putting his arm around her shoulder.
“Thanks, Dad!” She rolled her eyes. “I can take care of myself though.” Shrugging his arm off her and walking toward the school.
“We know you can, but it’s our job to watch out for you. We’re your brothers.” He continued in his usual I’m-the-big-brother voice. She’d heard him give this speech time and again when the kids picked on her.
Little lost orphan girl living in a home with all boys.
“Not actually my brothers.” She huffed.
“Bad form, Swan!” Killian chided.
She turned and stomped her way back to school, hiding the smile she carried knowing her “boys” were only looking out for her.
~
“Where the hell were you, mate?” Killian had Will cornered in his room. “We told you to keep an eye on her, you know the kids in your class are mean to her.”
Will shrugged, “Mate,” He echoed, “Belle French.”
Killian groaned. 3rd graders were so annoying. Will had been trying to get a kiss from Belle French since the 1st grade. “Belle French!” He repeats. “She wouldn’t kiss you if you were the last human on earth.”
“Not true.” He beams with a smile.
“I’m to believe you finally earned a kiss from Miss Belle?” He exclaimed.
“Er, well not exactly.” He paused and then his smile increased. “But she kicked me in me balls and stole my lunch this time.” Killian groaned. “It’s progress. Last time she just ignored me when I talked to her.” His younger brother insisted.
“I fear we need to have a chat about girls soon.” He pinched the bridge of his nose. “But seriously, I need you to focus on Emma. She’s your responsibility now, lad. David and I can’t be around to keep an eye on her from across town.”
“Oy, I’m not a bloody babysitter.” He growled. “Just because we’re the same age doesn’t mean my life has to stop. I’m 9 years old, I have a future ahead of me!” Will was always looking ahead.
Killian poked a finger in his chest. “If anything happens to her while we aren’t around, I’m going to bloody well rig you up from the back porch. How’s that for a future? You understand me, mate.” Adding a strong emphasis on his final word.
“You are such an arse.” Will shoots back before pausing. “Ok fine, I’ll keep an eye on her.”
“Bloody well see to it that you do.” He shouts, turning to leave.
“But you have to show me how to get Belle French to talk to me.”
“I fear that may be beyond my expertise.” He teases as he shoves his brother back onto his bed. “First start by not being a prat.” His young brothers’ eyebrows raise, and his tongue sticks out of his mouth mockingly before Killian steps out of his room and into the small hallway.
He paused outside Emma’s door, hearing the short sniffles behind the wood. Emma had not had an easy time in Storybrooke. Children were generally cruel when it came to people who were different than them. Killian never gave much thought to the stares he received when he first arrived. Boys were different than girls though. At least he was. He didn’t care what people thought of him, much the opposite actually.
“Swan, permission to enter?” He hears a commotion in the room and then a quiet response.
“Granted.”
When he pushes open the door, she’s sitting at the top of her bed, her eyes are puffy and she’s trying to hide her face behind a book.
“Good book?” He laughs.
“The best.” She says dryly.
“It’s upside down.” He teases and she drops the book, exhaling loudly.
“Why are you always an ass?”
He sits at the end of her bed, “Sorry, love. Don’t mean to tease. I know it’s been a bit of a rough day.”
“I’m fine.” She rolls her eyes in frustration.
“I am aware.” He said quietly. “I did not mean to deprive you of your own rescue today, Emma. As you said, you had it handled.” He bowed his head toward her in defeat. She raised her chin before speaking, “Hell yeah I did.”
He stood from the bed and headed toward the door. “Better not let Marco hear that kind of language coming out of your mouth, Swan. There will be a bar of soap on your plate for dinner.”
“Killian…” He paused, turning back to face her. “Thanks.” She smiled softly.
He nodded, closing the door behind him.  The smile growing on his face.

running until they couldnt hear the soinds of the monsters anymower, then vinnie said “what do we do nwo evan” and even did the shrugged, but tehn they heard a creepy sound that sound like an animal eating meat, they looked towerd where the sound was started adn they saw the rake eating the remains of piglet and also the one of roo, then he noticed our heroes and he charged towerd them, and he Hapuriainen’s Animation & Comics & Games of 2021
I started this way earlier but it’s almost May already... But anyway here’s the 2021 annual roundup for archival purposes.
Manga
Attack on Titan
Well this was a thing. I don’t think the ending was completely unexpected or against the kind of themes the story had, but I still didn’t like it and in the last 4 or so chapters my enthusiasm plummeted. Though most of my dislike for the ending stems from the fact that it had a ship I hate. A later revisit may get me to appreciate some elements of the ending more but right now I don’t feel like touching the series at all.
One Piece
My interest towards One Piece keeps reaching all time lows. I still have little idea of what’s at stake in the current arc and there are far too many characters, most of whose names and affiliations I can’t remember. Lately it’s been endless action scenes where the main characters feel mostly unnecessary. But at least Robin got a decent fight after almost two decades and I still like Yamato. Hopefully we’ll get out of Wano this year.
Other manga: Witch Hat Atelier, Case Study of Vanitas, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime
Awards given: Best non-romantic relationship (Noe & Vanitas)
Animation
Digimon Adventure tri 5-6, Digimon Last Evolution, Digimon Adventure 2020
Finally managed to get these off my list. I was very excited for all the nostalgia when Tri was first announced, but in the end watching it was a complete chore when the characterisation was bad and the plot was unnecessarily complicated and managed to drop the ball on the major elements it introduced. Last Evolution was a lot more enjoyable for me since it was a single contained story that knew what it was doing.
Adventure 2020 on the other hand was also a huge disappointment, for not doing anything interesting with the characters and having way too much Taichi/Agumon shilling. Worst part was when the cast split towards the end so I thought we could get even a couple of episodes without them, but in a rage-inducing moment they kept popping up all the time anyway for no other reason than to take screen time away from other characters. I’m aware that there’s a lot of nostalgia reasons why I like the original Digimon Adventure, but I still think there’s a lot of things it did far better than the reboot.
Yashahime
Another huge nostalgia related disappointment. The plot is far too complicated for a setup that wouldn’t need to be more complicated than “the kids of the characters from a show you like go on an adventure!”, and I really don’t care all that much for Towa and Setsuna and their drama. But I am still here for Moroha and her family reunion at least delivered properly.
Awards given: Best Side Girl (Moroha)
Zombieland Saga
I have never in my life been into idol shows, or zombies, but this one had such good character designs that it’s always been on my radar. Though ultimately what made me watch it was that I thought the manager was really funny in the OP.
Awards given: Best character designs
Other anime: Blue Reflection Ray, Umi Monogatari, Nanatsuiro Drops, Fairy Ranmaru, Inari Konkon Koi Iroha, Futari wa Precure, Tropical Rouge! Precure, Magia Record s2, Yuuki Yuuna is a Hero s3 (already discussed these on my magical girl blog)
Awards given: Best Girl (Laura, from Tropical Rouge Precure), Worst girl (Nanatsuiro Drops), Biggest WTF (YuYuYu’s confusing timeline), Worst Romance (Nanatsuiro Drops), Best OP (the song for Fairy Ranmaru)
Pompoko, From Up on Poppy Hill, Mirai no Mirai, Tenki no Ko
These had been on my watch list forever. None of them raised particularly strong feelings in me, Pompoko was kind of meandering, Poppy Hill had nice slice of life moments but I didn’t care for the relationship drama, Mirai expected the audience to be more interested in a toddler than what I’m able to afford to a movie, and Tenki no Ko had too many elements that relied on teenagers behaving impulsively for me to really like it. However the yolo scene in the hotel was great.
Awards given: Worst Boy (Tenki no Ko mc-kun)
Raya and the Last Dragon, Onward, Soul, Luca
Liked Soul the best, Onward had a good ending, Luca did nothing for me and I really didn’t like the character design, and did not enjoy Raya.
Awards given: Worst Side Girl (Sisu)
Games
Breath of the Wild
What replaced SNK as what I’m into the most. At first I played until Hateno lab in 2019 and put the game on hold for over a year because I couldn’t stand the horses and returning to the game wasn’t inviting at all. But then I finally got to it, ditched the horse and played over 100 hours. I like the open exploration, colours, angst and characters so much and I’m currently on my second playthrough. Can’t wait for the sequel.
Awards given: Best Boy (Link), Best Side Boy (Revali), Best Romance (for once I actually ship something and it’s Link & Zelda here), Best visuals, Best Work
Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity
Was hesitant to pick this up since I’m very bad at anything resembling an action game, but I wanted more of the botw cast and this was the only option. Thankfully the easy mode practically plays itself, and after several missions I really got into the game and had a lot of fun with the gameplay and character interactions. The story sucks though and I hate what they did with Link... (as in they did nothing with him)
Awards given: Best Music
Plans for 2022
Botw2 is what was looking forward to the most but now it’s moved to 2023...
But the new Pokemon generation is coming out this year right?
Evangelion has been on my watch list since 2014, maybe I’ll eventually get to it if I keep including it.
I’ve completed Skyward Sword earlier this year so it’ll be on the 2022 list if I manage to write one
Tiger & Bunny 2 and Spy x Family just started!
Tokyo Mew Mew New in summer

Post Q: Completed Reference List
Main Films:
The Last House on the Left, 1972. [Film] Wes Craven, USA: Hallmark Releasing.
A Nightmare on Elm Street, 1984. [Film] Wes Craven, USA: New Line Cinema.
Scream, 1996. [Film] Wes Craven, USA: Dimension Films.
Secondary References:
Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy. (2010). [DVD] Directed by D. Farrands. 1428 Films. - This was very useful to me as it provided me with a lot of insight into the behind-the-scenes of the film, which was particularly useful in regards to auteur theory, because I learned which aspects were contributed by who.
At the Movies. (1994). Siskel & Ebert - Wes Craven's "New Nightmare" (1994). [Online Video]. 14 October 1994. Available from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMbvJYSTnm4&index=8&list=PLvR8ZsaFQNScK1XB4UMVrVEJJwRuE9PpJ. - I thought this might have been more useful at the time, but having narrowed my field of study more has led me to believe it is not very useful; there are other sources which deal with the points he brings up in more depth.
Sanders, J., 2009. The Film Genre Book. 1st ed. Columbia University Press: Auteur Publishing. - This source aided me in recognising tropes of horror, such as the Final Girl, but also directed my attention to the fact that his debut film was a soft remake of Bergman’s The Virgin Spring. Furthermore, it first brought my attention to how Wes may be an auteur in reference to narrative writing.
Scream: The Inside Story. (2011). [video] Directed by D. Farrands. - Much like my first source, this provided me with great information regarding the background of Scream, and provided me with great points to make in my argument as the production company and the writer of the film had seemingly more input in the film than Wes.
Towlson, J., 2014. Subversive Horror Cinema. McFarland. - This source gave me so much insight into the social commentary of my director’s debut film and so became incredibly useful when studying Wes as an auteur.
Hutchings, P., 2017. The Horror Film. Pearson Education. This source didn’t have a lot of information for me to gather from but made a very strong argument against post-modern horror, which works very well into a counter-argument against Mr. Craven as an auteur as, according to Hutchings, it means movies become trivial instead of doing their job: analysing social fears.
Wes Craven’s Influence in Making the Horror Genre Subversive | The Mary Sue. 2017. Wes Craven’s Influence in Making the Horror Genre Subversive | The Mary Sue. [ONLINE] Available at: https://www.themarysue.com/wes-craven-influence/. - This was useful because it commented on Wes’ famously subversive style, which is one of the areas I need to focus on for my argument for him being an auteur.
Myerla’s Movie Reviews.: Origins of an auteur - Wes Craven. 2017.[ONLINE] Available at:http://myerlamoviereviews.blogspot.co.uk/2015/08/origins-of-auteur-wes-craven.html. + Cook, P., The Cinema Book 2nd Ed. British Film Institute. - Despite the title, this article brings into question his auteurship and also his filmmaking techniques - it’s all well and good using social commentary but to be defined as an auteur you must also be able to hone your craft of your medium. I could only find one relevant quote from the book, which made me wonder if NoES was simply following the trend of the time by bringing parent culture into question. I paired it with the above source because it also makes mention of the film possibly being a product of the time.
So The Theory Goes. 2017. Auteur: Wes Craven - So The Theory Goes. [ONLINE] Available at: http://www.sothetheorygoes.com/auteur-wes-craven/. - This piece states him as more of a genre director when it comes to filmmaking but, much like other sources, uses his use of narrative as an argument for atueur status.
Cristobal Olguin. (2017). Scream - Manipulating Expectations | Film Analysis. [Online Video]. 20 January 2017. Available from:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFbxip5WIIw&feature=youtu.be. + Renegade Cut. 2017. YouTube. [ONLINE] Available at:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wm2lRt5uz6c. -  This video analyses the use of red herrings and foreshadowing used within Scream. This video is particularly useful to me because it outlines a technique that Wes implemented himself. And even if the screenwriter helped out with this technique it is still something Wes has used countless times in his movies (E.g. the replacement of protagonists in NoES). This could be a strong case for Wes as an auteur, as this is a reoccurring technique used in his films. I included the second source with the above one because it goes nicely with the other by touching upon the subversions of common horror tropes, and I believe this to be important as I will most definitely be touching upon this in my essay in regards to Scream. This essay references Carol J Clover’s: Men, Women, and Chainsaws - a book which helped to define the slasher genre in the popular consciousness. The author of the video argues that NoES meets and subverts the criteria of the book and goes through them to prove his point.
Keith, B., 2003. Film Genre Reader III. University of Texas Press. -  This was extremely useful for creating a counterargument against Wes being simply a genre director as Robin Wood is one of the leading theorists behind auteurship. However, the fact that it focused simply on two films instead of a broader aspect of cinema was quite unfortunate, though I still managed to gather relevant information from the text when he discussed his two focal films.
Trespassing Bergman, 2013. [DVD] Hynek Pallas, Jane Magnusson, Sweden: Syndicado. + The Guardian. 2017. Wes Craven: the mainstream horror maestro inspired by Ingmar Bergman | Film | The Guardian. [ONLINE] Available at:https://www.theguardian.com/film/filmblog/2015/aug/31/wes-craven-the-mainstream-horror-maestro-inspired-by-ingmar-bergman.  - There wasn’t much to write about here as Wes barely appears in the documentary, which was unfortunate considering his debut films was a soft remake of one of Bergman’s. Nevertheless I was able to gather some relevant quotes for when I discuss his influences. Since I was unable to gather much information from the above source, I paired it with one which touched upon the same topic. Together the sources bring into question how much Wes’ inspiration’s bled into his film, which is important to discuss when analysing auteurship.
Jane, B., 2014. New American Teenagers. Bloomsbury +
Academic.CRACKED.com. 2017. The ‘Nightmare On Elm Street’ Series Is Deeper Than You Know. [ONLINE] Available at: http://www.cracked.com/blog/the-secret-message-hiding-in-elm-street-series/. -  I thought that these two sources worked well together as they’re the only sources I could find which discuss the themes of NoES, and they both point towards the central theme of the film being puberty, even if the ‘quirky comedic’ tone of the Cracked article isn’t quite what I wanted. This is hardly surprising since the director and cast have all admitted that there are sexual undertones between Nancy and Freddy especially.
