Do you ever read a nonfiction book that just scratches the itch in your brain so well you feel like you just need to go outside and scream into the sky for a little while, and then come back in later to make everyone else read it too? Because that’s what this book did, so now all of you should go read it too.

A New Book Illuminates the Lives of the Elusive, Pink-Plumed Flamingos in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula
In the Yucatán Peninsula, the rich wetland environment of the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve is one of the most important sites for flamingos. The pink-pigmented birds flock to the area for breeding each year, with officials registering approximately 15,000 nests and 30,000 adults inhabiting the area in 2021 alone.

book review || Ace by Angela Chen
video review || Little Bit Much – April Wrap Up || 12 books!
Across the board, an educational and fascinating read that was very well structured, alternating personal stories of people who identify as asexual and facts that connected with the point of each chapter, stating the evidence and tying it back effectively to the individual’s story, in a way that is still easily digestible. This definitely could have read more like a professional study or a literature review, but I think that would have been a bit more alienating than the author was hoping for. This really delved into the many aspects of life that relate to a person’s asexuality and made it easy for any reader to follow and even relate, regardless of their own sexuality. She really did have me reevaluating our society’s relationship with sex and the role it can play in relationships with others as well as with ourselves. I think the most well-done non-fiction books are ones that make you sit and rethink what you read, apply it to your own life, and further understand what you’re learning, which is exactly what I did with this book. Of course, a ton of my tabs were the media’s portrayal of sex and asexuals, which I’m definitely going to be considered when seeking out more ace stories. A quick read that I highly recommend.

I really enjoy these sorts of popular science books, particularly ones about math or statistics. I’m not a big math person but I am a social science person who has an appreciation of statistics, especially where the fields overlap

Lessons I learned from my first book.
Bumps on the Road of Life.My first book Lessons I learned from my first book. By David Joel Miller, writer, blogger, and mental health professional. My first attempt at writing a book came after almost seven years of writing a blog. By that point, I thought I had pretty well worked out the process of coming up with an idea, creating an outline, and writing a section. Putting that all together and…

What I Was Doing While You Were Breeding - Kristin Newman
★ ★/5
When I saw a review of this travel memoir saying that this book changed their life and perspective on travel I was like… hell yeah sign me up! What I did not sign up for was a roster of international hookups and a “not like other girls” mantra. The author is privileged to travel and explore the world and yet so ignorant on other cultures and places. Could’ve been inspiring but instead was just boring.

4 stars. ‘Decolonize Multiculturalism’ offers up a thorough exploration of the complex evolution of multiculturalism, and I’m impressed by its deep analysis and thought-provoking message. Alessandrini delves into the inspiring student and youth movements of the 1960s and 1970s, which were fueled by global decolonisation and anti-racism movements. In his analysis, he highlights the profound societal transformation sought by these movements, contrasting it w the harsh repression they faced frm various institutional power structures such as police and university administrations.
What sets this book apart is its critique of modern institutionalised multiculturalism. Alessandrini skillfully exposes the disconnect between contemporary multiculturalism, riddled w buzzwords and virtue signalling. Like take the way decolonisation has been turned into a sparkly new term fr a multitude of things, like “decolonise therapy!” and “decolonise academia!”, yet often fails to centre the anticolonial and anti-racist struggles that sparked its inception. He navigates through the layers of branding strategies to reveal the lingering remnants of the original radical ideals, as these ideals aimed to redefine universities, liberating them frm their settler colonial, white supremacist, and patriarchal capitalist origins, and transforming them into hubs of radical democratic potential.
While the book’s critique is sharp, Alessandrini also manages to maintain a nuanced perspective throughout. He invites us to critically engage w the evolution of multiculturalism, acknowledging both its potential fr progress and its (greater) potential fr co-optation. Ultimately, in ‘Decolonize Multiculturalism’, Alessandrini provides us w an insightful journey through the intricate web of historical and ideological forces shaping multiculturalism, and challenges us to reevaluate the path of progress and social change while rekindling the spirit of those early activist movements.

To incubate their eggs, flamingos build nesting sites in their colonies. They consist of mud cones that must be constantly maintained so that rising water does not wash away the eggs.

The Celestún estuary is a popular place for flamingos and is near the cenotes, underwater water reservoirs that inject fresh water into the middle of a lagoon as if from a spring.

book review || Hood Feminism by Mikki Kendall
An incredibly thought-provoking book about the importance of intersectional feminism and the many topics that fall under it, but don’t usually gain attention as such. Over all, I did find this a very important read, but perhaps for people just diving into feminist literature.
The author did a fantastic job laying out the book, with chapters and issues relating to and affecting one another. She’s quite eloquent, while still maintaining a more casual tone. Even on the topics I felt quite knowledgeable on, I’d still come across a line or paragraph that would make me sit back and think. She’s insightful and would make me look at many of these issues from a different perspective than I have in the past. Chances are you’ll be uncomfortable at some point while reading this. Kendall calls out the hypocrisy and hesitance many of us have around these conversations. They aren’t easy, but they’re important, especially if we want to enact serious change.
The writing could be a bit repetitive at times and it was very anecdotal, sometimes veering a bit off-topic before circling back to the main point of the chapter. I think the one real complaint I have (which probably draws from my experience writing in an education setting) is the lack of evidence to back up certain claims and her citing system.
All in all, I certainly recommend it to anyone that claims to be a feminist.

I’m actually serious about this, if at all possible, right now is a very good time to request queer books from your local library. Whether they get them or not is not in your control, but it is so important to show that there is a desire for queer books. I will also say getting more queer books in libraries and supporting queer authors are pretty fantastic byproducts of any action.
This isn’t something everyone can do, but please do see if you are one of the people who has the privilege to engage in this form of activism, and if you are, leverage that privilege for all you’re worth.
For anyone who can’t think of a queer book to request, here is a little list of some queer books that I think are underrated and might not be in circulation even at larger libraries:
Refusing Compulsory Sexuality: A Black Asexual Lens on Our Sex-Obsessed Culture by Sherronda J. Brown
Silver Under Nightfall by Rin Chupeco
Harvard's Secret Court: The Savage 1920 Purge of Campus Homosexuals by William Wright
