One thing I will say that I don’t like about Tales of is that for all the talk about how they’re set in unique worlds and how they’re fleshed out by copious amounts of worldbuilding they’re known for, some of the games don’t give you the luxury of exploring the actual world in its entirety.
Zestiria has the excuse that Desolation was largely broken into smaller landmasses and islands post-Berseria but it still takes place on a continent with two interconnecting countries so it kind of puts a damper on the the whole “the Lord of Calamity is about to plunge the world into darkness if he’s killed early/isn’t purified” scenario when it’s set on a smaller scale.
Legendia has a whole mainland that you hear about but don’t even get to explore.
Luminaria is a weird example where it clearly shows there are two/three continents that might be connected a’la Pangaea/Kenorland but we only get an in-depth look at the Jerle Federation and the Gildllan Empire (and an idea of what it was like when it was formerly the Wildlands). OTOH, the northern and southern continents might not even have civilization so they might be excused as being the north and south poles so that leaves the lands outside the Empire and the Federation in an awkward spot from a worldbuilding standpoint (because unless it’s all wilderness out there, and it’d be stupid for the Empire not to capitalize on that, then that means there are settlements beyond the borders, and they have to know there’s a war going on right next door). Then again, they probably wouldn’t play any role in the Anathema War whatsoever in the immediate picture, so that makes Yelsey’s comment about “being in Aedis means you get to see the whole world” rather silly because how can you if the narrative consigns the war to just one big part of the continent and ignores the nations west of the Empire and south of Jerle? Unfortunately at the time of this post we don’t have the good fortune of knowing if future episodes would’ve taken place outside Imperial and Federalist territory so Luminaria is forcibly condemned by capitalism BamCo to have its world take place in just the two countries. Then again, the countries seem relatively large and while we don’t get much of an idea about their maritime history (which there should be because we see boats, and Shayor and Huazar are right near the ocean) we do know technology is advanced enough, at least on the Imperial side, to have train locomotives and a functional railway system (but somehow still no cars?? Even after the technological revolution the Reactors brought on regardless of how Jerle is trying to keep up with their advancements?? In a wartime setting?? Que???) so if we completely ignore everything outside the Empire and the Federation that’s at least half the world right there.

Sadly, no random drabble mood has hit me today.
Now then.
Do I resume my Final Fantasy crusade and work on 12 or shall I take a break and play Tales of Berseria or play That fist of the North Star game? Hmm

Starting a New Game+ in Tale of Berseria is hilarious, because I forgot that I had everyone dressed in the bath-towel costume and the game remembered that. And since I can’t actually play as most of the characters until a few hours into the game, that means everyone’s gonna go about as normal until I can take control of them and put some clothes on. Until then, everyone gets to run around the frozen north pretty much butt naked.

And for the top 5, I’m sending your ask right back at you! =D Top 5 (or 500) pieces of video game music!
HAHAHA EVERYTHING YOU DO IN LIFE COMES BACK TO YOUOK HERE YOU GO, IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER (except alphabetical per game lol)
I’m gonna… put this under a cut for length. Oh boy.
Chrono Cross (fun fact: I’ve never played the game but I own a copy of the soundtrack):-Scars of Time-Fields Of Time - Home World-On The Beach Of Dreams - Another World-Departed Souls-Dragon Knight-Prisoners Of Fate-Magical Dreamers - The Wind, Stars, And Waves ~-The Dream That Time Dreams-Dragon God-Life ~ A Distant Promise
Assassin’s Creed II:-Earth-Ezio’s Family-Venice Rooftops (my first contact ever with AC was the Soul Calibur version of Venice Rooftops and at that very moment I KNEW I had to play the game that it originally belonged to. No kidding!)-Master Assassin (it’s from Brotherhood but yada yada)
Assassin’s Creed III:-Main Theme-Ratohnhaké:tonThe Liberation soundtrack was also amazing, I could listen to the Main Theme for days.
Dissidia Final Fantasy:-the openings and ending medleys, and also that new version of The Man with the Machine Gun is killer
Final Fantasy IV:-the goddamn opening of the Nintendo DS remake
Final Fantasy VI:-Terra’s Theme
Final Fantasy VII:-the battle theme and boss battle theme, who doesn’t love it-the main theme once you had spent enough time in the menue to actually ever hear the end of it-Cosmo Canyon AKA Valley Where Stars Fall whatever and Become a Great Soldier-Words Extinguished by Fireworks-Listen to the Voice of the Stars-and of course Aerith’ theme-Towards the Mountain-The Day of Our Last Moments-Perfect Jenova-Carmina Burana reloaded uhm I mean One Winged Angel, too, of course-also the opening and ending credits from Crisis Core which is a mediocre game, but it let me hack n slay, had the infinitely more lovable protagonist, and it had some cool music remixes
Final Fantasy VIII (oh boy, the FFVIII OST is my fav right after IX, although the latter wins every other race in the franchise)-Liberi Fatali and also the Overture AKA the motherfucking opening credits when you insert Disc 1 for the first time-The Landing-Force Your Way (honestly this game has some of my favourite of favourite battle themes EVER; the feeling of beating up bosses after spending hours, HOURS in the menue to set up your team is incredible lol; like OH MY GOD MY PLAN ACTUALLY WORKED)-The Mission-The Stage Is Set-Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec-Premonition-Drifting-The Oath-Trust Me-Lunatic Pandora (gives you a headache if you listen to it for too long tho lol)-Compression of Time-The Castle-Legendary Beast-Maybe I’m A Lion-The Extreme-the Ending Theme (yep, including Eyes One Me! I mean it’s cheesy but it kinda grew on me…)(basically the entire end of the 4th disc is a blast, not gonna lie)
Final Fantasy IX (buckle your seatbelts!):-Place I Call Home/A Place to Call Home/whatever AKA the opening credits-Living by the Sword-Hunter’s Chance-Marsh of the Q Tribe-Sword of Confusion-Eternally Good Harvest-Roses of May-City Under Siege-Protecting my Devotion-Light of Destiny-Chamber of a Thousand Faces-Mount Gulug-Four Mirrors-Concurrent Battles-Terra-You Are Not Alone-Assault of the Silver Dragons-Organum (which is an obscure organ version of the opening credit theme which gets a billion variations throughout the game anyway; it’s on a bonus soundtrack CD that I bought at one point before I finally got my hands on a copy of the actual OST)-and of course the One True Melodies of Life
Actually 90% of the soundtrack
Final Fantasy X:-People of the North Pole-A Fleeting Dream-Suteki Da Ne, too
Final Fantasy XII-the boss battle theme-the Esper battle theme-also the Imperial March I mean Theme of the Empire
Final Fantasy XIII:-Blinded by Light (VIOLIN BATTLE THEME VIOLIN BATTLE THEME)-Saber’s Edge-Lightning’s Theme-Caius’ Theme from FFXIII-2 (which was a waste of time BUT it had Liam O’Brien. Can I just have a poster of Liam O’Brien’s voice pls)
Final Fantasy XV (I still haven’t played this thing lol):-Too Much Is Never Enough (I bought sheet music lol)-Somnus (both instrumental and /w lyrics)-Departure-Wanderlust-Ardyn and Ardyn II-Labyrinthine-The Hydraeans Wrath-Homecoming
(notice a pattern lol)BTW every single Distant World CD is a fucking gem and you should buy them
Kingdom Hearts whatever (I’m not gonna go through the individual titles):-Dearly Beloved in all versions ever released-Disappeared-Another Side-all of Vanitas’ battle themes-Ventus’ themeand of course Hikaru Utada’s songs I love that woman; and also the orchestral/instrumental arrangements that were used in the trailers.
Tales of Berseria:-BURN (why is it capslocked tho)
Tales of Destiny:-Yume De Aru Youni-Irony of Fate in that goddamn epic remix from that orchestra CD thingy
Tales of Symphonia:-Starry Heavens and the sweet instrumental version that plays when you thought you had lost all your teammates but they come back and help you while you rescue that one team mate whose affection for Lloyd was highest
Tales of Vesperia:-Ring a Bell
Tales of Xillia:-Progress
Tales of Zestiria:-White Light-Zaveid the Exile-Flaming Bonds are Being Tested-Melody of Water is the Guide in Spiritual Mist (can we set a petition for Mikleo to play his own trial theme on the piano, yes, sign here, thank you)-Competing with the Honor of the Land-Fight Between the Wind and the Blinking Sky-Rising Up
(why do these trials themes have so long names bleurgh. So yeah AKA ALL THE TRIAL THEMES)
(basically all the Tales openings lol)
The Legend of Zelda… oh god why are there so many games. So I’m only gonna go through my two favs:
Ocarina of Time:-Lost Woods-Windmill Hut (aka the Song of Storms)-Gerudo Valley
The Wind Waker:-Dragon Roost Island-Molgera’s boss fight theme
also the bonus orchestra CD from Skyword Sword was so good :O
Valkyrie Profile:-Take A Flight
Xenogears:-Stars of Tears-Grahf, Dark Conqueror (only a JRPG would name a villain Grahf tho lol)-Premonition-Awakening-The One Who Bares Fangs at God-Small Two of Pieces (PLEASE I NEED SHEET MUSIC FOR THIS WHERE CAN I FIND SOME; legally if possible lol)-the battle themes aren’s bad, either(fun fact: I’ve never played this game, either)
Xenosaga stuffz(never played that either lol. I didn’t listen to the complete soundtracks, either, only bits)-The Miracle-Kokoro (whoever came up with that song title has guts, but it’s seriously super beautiful, and Joanne Hogg makes a comeback on vocals!)
BTW I never played anything Wild Arms, either, but I really the openings for the first and third game in the series, respectively.Oh and that one boss battle theme from Shadow Hearts II! (I think it’s called Hardcore to the Brain?) I actually never played that thing, but I watched my sister (who’s super fond of the game!) for like 90% of the plot I think.
…Would you believe that this a selectionI… I’ll better not go into movie soundtracks*faints*
…Uhm, do anime songs count lol

10 Games I Played in 2017, Roughly Ranked
This is wildly long lol so have fun, idiots
#10: DESTINY 2
This is sort of awkward. Destiny 1 was a game I enjoyed with small reservations; it was obvious how hampered they were by their own backend in creating new content and design spaces to explore, prior to The Taken King. Even then, it had shining moments of joy for me. I adored the goofy dead ghost hunting like halo 2/3 skullfinding, using every trick at your dispoaal to find another morsel of insane, well-crafted tidbits of lore for this world that the game itself rarely even touched on, let alone explored. Destiny 2 was supposed to be the "we listened and we're fixing it" for that game, and a needed jump to a new backend that would free them to create the things they dreamed of.
The grimoire was removed wholesale, those bits of lore still true presumably but inaccessible in the game again. Instead of finding ghosts, you examine objects in the world, getting a 2-sentence Nolan North quip that usually is more funny than it is educational about this sprawling world they created. And it doesn't save that anywhere. We actually moved backwards in term of the lore's accessibility to the player, somehow. The game itself is still Destiny, helmet popping and aiming down sights and kicking balls around the tower, and it's storyline was ambitious in a way the original was not, actually making you feel at least a little weak for about 10 minutes before you're back to killing Fallen and then doing donuts on your Sparrow on top of their corpse. The game treats itself as both too serious and totally unserious in the same breath, a monologue of serious consequences punctuated by Cayde cradling a chicken and petting it gently. It's good, but it remains to see if it'll reach the same comfortable spot Destiny 1 got to by the end of it's lifespan.
9: NIOH Here's where I admit that some of these games I've played, in that I played it for a few hours and haven't had time to return to it. I have it on good faith that Nioh is an incredible game, and from the bits I've touched I know that to be at least probably true. I've heard it described more as a Diablo-esque loot-game pretending to be a Dark Souls ball-busting difficulty monster than vice versa. It's something I'm hoping to come back to, and if I'd been able to spend more time with, I likely would have put much further up the list.
8: Dishonored: Death of the Outsider Another game I fuckin' haven't had time to complete, Death of the Outsider is the thing I and several friends have wanted for years; Billie Lurk fucking shit up. And her powerset rules. I'm only like 2 missions in, but I'm looking forward to finishing the rest sometime before Christmas, hopefully. Dishonored 2 was definitely a game I was thrilled to play, and I know this will be more of the same.
7: Resident Evil 7 What could be better than the creeping horror of a deranged family out in the Louisiana Bayou? Resident Evil 7 was honestly so unbelievably effective at learning from the last 5+ years of immersive horror games while still, at it's heart, being a goofy Resident Evil game under that. That style clashes at times; The moment when you go outside to the courtyard of the mansion and find a double-keycard locked door when the most advanced thing in the whole house before now has been the goofy projector-doors that hearken back to the ancient history of the series. I think it sticks it's landing well, with a good lategame twist and plenty of goofy superscience in between. I've been meaning to go back to it for the Chris Redfield DLC, but I don't know if I actually want to, to be honest. That game was a fun ride, and they did their best to add the usual replay stuff like a NG+ gun and such, but I think I'm okay leaving it where I left it, on good terms.
6: Tacoma I bought the hoodie that came with a LUNAR TRANSFER STATION TACOMA patch Fullbright sold long before that game had it's transformation following feedback from beta testers, and I never stopped looking forward to it coming out. Gone Home was like a...I won't say formative, because it isn't true, but it was definitive for me. A story about two girls falling in love together doesn't come around that often, and the attention to the setting and feel of being in this old, deeply lived in house. Tacoma shows that same love of character and place in spades, giving you an even more intimate look at the world the crew of the Tacoma lived in together. I honestly lost it when I noticed during a scene that next door, their cat was asleep on the shelf above the laundry machine. Just the smallest details and love shown for everyone involved broke my heart and put it back together in a different shape. A vision of a world utterly fucked by corporatist greed such that they are essentially their own extragovernmental entities, and people live on anyway, just being people. It's so sad, but still sort of hopeful? Even if the world is garbage, people will keep on living as best as they can. It's very millennial of myself to find solace in that idea, honestly, but that's this game for you, one crafted based on the excesses of the last decade spiraling out of control.
5: Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood In any other year, this game would be #1. You're gonna hear me say that a few more times here before we're done. Final Fantasy 14 has been a constant in my life for the last 3 years, delivering again and again the sort of joy that only comes from a game lovingly made by people dedicated to their own love of the genre, the setting and their playerbase. That's the only way I can describe it, lovingly crafted. Naoki Yoshida loves this game, and so does his team, and every inch of that game radiates this. The storyline itself is a little meandering, jumping from a failed revolution to formenting a successful one, to returning triumphant with new armies and allies at your back. Everyone in that game is, again, a joy to be around. It has a somewhat similar roadtrip feel to Heavensward, but never treads the same ground in the same way. It's more like...taking your friend abroad to another country, while Heavensward was a road trip across a state that stops and starts in fits and spurts. I don't know if this expansion will hold my attention in the same way that Heavensward did, or that A Realm Reborn did. I don't know if I have that part of myself that's willing to ride with an MMO across the lifetime of it's expansion this time. I want to support this game, and the people who make it, and my friends who do still ride with it. But this might be my last expansion.
4: Tales of Berseria If this came out any other year, it might be my game of the year. You'll hear that 2 more times before we're done. I've never been a Tales person. I know people who are, and I understand the mystique, but I never Understood it until repeated praise (and some very cute lesbian ship art) forced my hand into buying it. I don't know if I'm gonna be ok when I finish it. The game is very baldly about doing bad things. The protagonist is a demon on a blatantly self-destructive revenge quest against the self-appointed savior of the world, aided by a demon swordsman who wants to kill his brother, a witch with existentially depressed ennui, a boy who barely knows who he is, a pirate cursed to bring ruin to those around him, and a pure maiden with a tragic backstory trying to do good in the world who has fallen in with them through a series of missteps so comic they're mostly just sad. Together, this totally uncohesive group of misfits abandoned by the world, rejecting it and destroying everything that stands in their way. It crushes my heart on the regular. This is definitely a 60+ hour JRPG because I just got to hour 20 and there's absolutely still so much left to go. They've introed villain after villain, placing the shotgun on the mantelpiece for Velvet to mangle herself with just to kill them in the blast. This game breaks my heart. The world it's in is awful, every party member has been utterly ruined by some facet of it that happened to conflict with a totally normal thing they wanted. They're the devil's rejects. And I love every single one of them.
3: Butterfly Soup Remember all the praise I gave Gone Home back there? This game is like that for me this year. You can just make a game about some queer girls playing baseball and being in love, and I'll love it with all my heart. It's not hard for me to peg why I love it; Akarsha is like a fucking mirror pointed directly at my face with a moustache painted on it, Diya's anxiety and gay panic is so deeply relatable that I very nearly cried the first time she said the word Lesbian to herself and immediately tried to convince herself she's not gay. Brianna Lei's depiction of young, messy, goofy girls living with all the problems that happen to kids their age; insane parents, abuse, self-discovery, a lot of bad jokes and getting all too real at a moment's notice. I honestly cannot wait to see what else she can bring to the table.
1 (TIE): NieR: Automata If this game came out any other year, it would be #1 without effort. The original NieR did something at just the right time, with just the right amount of feeling. A rejection of the trend of father figures rescuing their child and getting the good ending, NieR was a quest to protect a girl to the detriment of everyone around the protagonist, including the girl herself. The final ending of that game ends with you erasing yourself from the world so that you never existed, to save someone who deserves to live and would have if not for you. NieR's destructive quest to protect his daughter literally destroys the world around him, disrupting millennia of careful planning and manipulation by people far smarter than him. All because they took his daughter. Damn the world, he wanted what was his. NieR: Automata follows another 10,000 years after that, in the same world, scarred by a war that broke out centuries ago. The game frequently lies to both you the player and you the protagonist, but the protagonist already knows better, and simply doesn't let on. The game focuses, instead, on the ways that something built by humans craves to become like its long-gone masters. Androids are built to be physically ideal, sexy and at times loving to one another, because that's what humans did. It's unclear if they chose this for themselves or if humans did it to them (and obviously Yoko Taro chose for them to be like this, human choice or no), but it's how they live. The machines they fight do the same, playing a phone game across millennia of what humanity was, trying to fill the holes in their life with gender binaries, sexual intercourse, children and family and love. What separates them from us? Are we any different? Do we deserve to be different? Do they? I don't know how to talk about this game coherently. There's so much there. People recently have been talking about it again, as lists like these come up, and so many bad takes are floating around that it crushes my heart. 2B's sexy, so the game is horny. It's bad because you have to replay it 5 times (no, wrong, bad). It's bad because 9S is a softboy and 2B could have been a lesbian with any of the women throwing themselves at her (come on, dude, at least try). I'm not gonna try to rebut any of these, because the game itself doesn't need my defense. It stands on its own. It's the best game I've played in the last 5 years, in all likelihood. It's definitely my favorite of the last decade.
1 (TIE): Persona 5 If this game came out on any other year, it would be #1 with a bullet. This game had an insanely tortured development cycle. Pushed back again, then again, then again. Remember that February 2012 graphic that used to go around, and likely will right around Valentine's Day? Characters were revamped, removed, redesigned 5 times in the case of Haru (who started out as a boy, somehow). But it's exactly the game I needed in 2017. I was a transplant in Texas in 2004, going into high school in a new state where we knew no-one and nobody. I was quiet, spending most of my time outside class reading the 6th Dark Tower novel, Song of Susannah, a 2 inch thich hardcover beast. Because it's high school, rumors started about whatever they thought I was because I was quiet and wore a hoodie to school regardless of the weather, hiding guns or knives or what have you. Akira's experience touched me, in ways I never thought I would be a decade after graduating. Shit, everyone touched me in some way. Yusuke's quiet acceptance of the abuse and labels applied to him by his teacher and his fellow students. Futaba's isolation in the wake of her mother's death hit me in the heart; I dropped out of college when my own mother had a spinal cord fusion in her lumbar spine that ruined her life, left her with 10% her previous mobility. I mourned for years. Haru's quiet demeanor and the immediate, effusive joy she displayed whenever she could be with her friends, no matter the context. Ryuji's bristling rage at authority that ridicules him. Even the side cast struck me in ways Persona 4 and 3 never did. Kawakami's tiredness with the world, her exploitation she brushes off as a fact of life. Takemi's cool acceptance of being forced from the job of her dreams into treating bruises and being blackballed by the world she worked to survive in. Sojiro's struggles with cruel family that would destroy the daughter he loves as his own. Persona 5 is a game about the ways that society is designed to strike down the odd man out, casting them aside as worthless or ridiculous. The simple girl run into a cult, the daughter of a model forced into a role she never asked for, the typecast and the downtrodden, who deserve so much better than the world they've been given. This is a deeply flawed game. Within hours of Ryuji standing side by side with Ann to defend her from the casual sexism of Kamoshida or any other number of aggressions, he becomes a slavering hound doing the same thing to his best friend. The writing, when it's not inconsistent, simply isn't there; Haru's final and rather grand entrance peters off into maybe a dozen lines she has in the main story following her introduction. 6+ years in development can do some bad stuff to a game. But I love it, despite all of that. I can see what this game could have been, with a less tortured development, with a director who didn't ask the character design to make all of the female confidants "cuter". With a more focused vision, a clearer goal, and a better route there. All of that said, I still love my satanic crime ring. And I probably always will.

What originally got you into Persona and Tales?
Persona was a new interest for me! I had seen it floating around on tumblr for years of being here but with the release of persona 5 I was like “MMM GOTTA GET ON THAT NOW”. Fortunately my brother got into it bc of the amazing soundtrack and he bought it for me! He recently got 3 and 4 and a vita to play them, so hopefully I’ll get to experience those in the future as well!
Tales is a bit of a different story. My dad actually used to play Symphonia with my brother and I when we were little, until eventually he got too busy and my brother and I played it by ourselves. We didn’t even know it was an entire series until we found out there was a sequel when DotNW came out. We played the sequel with one of our older (and rich) friends and the next time we saw him, he showed us Vesperia. Since then we’ve basically been keeping up with every North American release! Except berseria, bc no PS4 or good gaming computer…,,…

Tales of Why did I think day drinking would be a good idea Episode 22
Okay so I thought that getting drunk would ease the bullshit but it didn’t I got sick and it got worse.
So the anime once again didn’t do any basic fact checking and did a thing that the game was accused of doing. The fact checking, Alisha would not be the new Queen of Hyland if the King dies. Outside materials state that she is a low ranking princess meaning that her chances of succession is very low and it implies that she has siblings that are older and/ or more legitimate than her that would take the throne before she can. Plus her low rank as a princess is because her mother was a commoner so it would be looked down upon in the council and nobility to have, effectively a commoner to rule. Also the Council is technically running the show, sure Bartlow’s dead here but they still run the kingdom as shown in the Alisha DLC. Also there are people up north. See in the game there is an exchange of dialogue in the Camlaan scene where it’s like “General Heldalf there are forces incoming!” “Are they the Hyland army or the guys up north?” “I think it’s Hyland sir.” Which says that there are people outside of Glennwood and too the north. It is not so barren it is inhospitable to live there. Sure people will live differently to prepare for a volcano crisis because of Mount Killaraus but there are still people up north.
As for shit that the game is accused of doing that the anime pulls through with. Everyone flocking to Sorey’s feet. Remember in the game where he’s not all that adored and how people treated him fluctuated between “Hey thanks you good person!” to “Go fuck yourself you piece of shit!” He’s honestly treated like a normal person and many people doubt and even fear him in the beginning parts of the game. The whole damn world doesn’t respect him until the very end of the game and even then it’s the end of the game where he goes to sleep which is more or less earned. Other than that he’s treated normally. However here in the anime ... “oh my god shepherd we’ll follow you to the ends of the earth I’ll give my life up for you you are our savior!” Everybody is flocking to him and he is continually given special treatment even if it’s undeserved. See the difference? And the real damn shame is that all the things that Ufotable is doing with cranking every criticism of the game up to an eleven would be great as a Tales of Zestiria satire but it’s supposed to be played as a straight adaptation which makes this anime awful. It honestly would’ve been better if Ufotable went in a more satirical direction that way doing everything that the game is accused of doing would work.
As for the Berseria stuff, feels shoehorned in as usual and would’ve worked better if the Celestial record revealed the origins of the age of chaos and reveal that Mikleo is his nephew. Also the ending is written by his sister Muse that reveals what happened to Michael and to her child. Also I have the headcanon that the events of Berseria became the new Seraph taboo since Malevolence stopped being a taboo as in Zestiria the information on malevolence is readily available with no worry of driving people mad. However something like the Lord of Calamity saving the world from the Shepherd will drive people mad as it goes against everything they know so they can’t share it. The only humans that would know about it would be the Mayvin story tellers as Magilou started it up and I think she would tell that story to her children and it would be passed on with each generation swearing upon the oath to not tell anyone unless it’s dire. So in the anime due to Berseria being taboo Michael shouldn’t know about this stuff.
Another Berseria thing though not explicit is how the armatus ends up working on squires. Yeah how it’s portrayed is very similar to the Melchior’s selfdestruct feature he added in Berseria where it the armatus would virtually kill both exorcist and malak if the malak’s power became too much for the armatus. Which should not be the case BECAUSE OF BERSERIA! You see in the game itself not only does Artorius use the armatus but several other exorcists, which you could argue count as squires also know how to armatize very easily. Also in a sub event a couple of malakim talk to Velvet about perfecting the armatus so all you need is high enough resonance and consent from both human and seraph/malak and due to the lack of a self destruct feature the malakim presumably got rid of that too. So Alisha and Rose, especially Rose, should not have any trouble armatizing because a. it contradicts canon history, and b. they have both resonance and consent from the seraphim by the logic of both games it should work! but nooooooooooo they have to shoe horn in because it wouldn’t be fair to Alisha’s shitty fanbase if she never armatized while Rose can and to shoehorn in some bullshit squire drama. Ah well at least the only good thing was that they didn’t go and purify Eizen because I see that it would’ve been some sappy bullshit when it should’ve been the scene from Critical Role where Scanlan lashes at the party and leaves.

For the gaming ask: Final Fantasy XV, any of the LEGO games, assassin's creed odyssey (I know it didn't come out yet, just wanna know if you will be playing)
(for this ask meme!)
Eeep, okay, let’s see, this is gonna get a bit longer so let’s actually put in a cut
FFXV:
never played | want to play | terrible | boring | okay | good | great | a favorite
Uh. Yeah. So you see. Confession time. I still haven’t played it. I stayed loyal to the franchise until FFXIII and a bit of Dissidia included, except for the MMO titles because I have zero interest in MMOs, but didn’t enjoy anything after FFIX that much (guess what’s still my favourite), so when FFXV was FINALLY announced after years and years of development, I was like “…yeah, great, NOW PLEASE GO BACK TO KINGDOM HEARTS”. I’m not too fond of cruising around in a car, and there is absolutely no excuse why there’s not a single permanently playable female party member.I’ve heard the plot was good, though, and of course Final Fantasy always has KICK ASS graphics. And it seems they have finally abandoned turn based battle for good, too, which is nice. I miss a few things from old school RPGs, but sure as hell not that. (no level grinding and no random encounters, either, for that matter).
That bit being said, I ADORE THE SOUNDTRACK. It’s fantastic and I love it.However, I doubt I could play FFXV and still take it serious, because I’d just hear Sorey and Artorius all the time. Despite having played Zestiria and Berseria exclusively in Japanese audio.
Any Lego game
never played | want to play | terrible | boring | okay | good | great | a favorite
…Well, I did watch a good friend of mine playing a few rounds of LEGO Lord of the Rings, though, and found it highly amusing. So.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey:
never played | (lowkey) want to play | terrible | boring | okay | good | great | a favorite
Okay hear me out. I LOVED, LOVED Assassin’s Creed II with all my heart (incl. Brotherhood and Revelations). This game BROKE me a bit. I adore the soundtrack to bits, and ever since I can’t look at churches anymore without planning my way up to climb them (nevermind I can’t climb, or do parcours). I loved the plot. I still loved the plot in Assassin’s Creed III. And the setting, surprisingly. At first I wasn’t very keen about the North America setting because you know, NO CATHEDRALS TO CLIMB), but then they announced Connor as the main character and THEY PUT SO MUCH EFFORT into recreating history from a native’s point of view, and I was so, so sold. Before this turns into a full-blown “why I love Assassin’s Creed II+III” ramble, let me just say…I dropped out afterwards. Because the gameplay was going into a direction I didn’t enjoy (less stealth and climbing cool things, more running into guards instead of avoiding them and just piling up bodies into a freaking bloodbath), and because the writing team entirely abandoned the Desmond + the holy apple thingies plot that had me intrigued so much. And I’m like. WHY?…So I never played any of the AC games that came after.I was low-key intrigued for Origins at least because you know, Ancient Egypt, but not intrigued enough to actually check how well they had done their research this time. (historical accuracy in AC is laughably amazing in some parts, but failing completely in others)
Can’t say it’s gonna be different for Odyssey. I’m interested in the Ancient Greece setting (and seeing what actually fits what I’ve learned from my humble part of studying ancient texts), but. Listen guys, if I’m not allowed to climb all the cool temples I’m gonna be so friggin mad. I don’t wanna fist-fight guards. I WANT TO CLIMB ALL THE THINGS. You get me? And please make the plot interesting again. Thanks.I have actually no interest in any romancing options, either. I know it’s what so many people crave for (hi Dragon Age!), but it bores me. I don’t care if I can be gay, can I just be aro-ace? Thanks. Means you can leave the romance option out entirely. Cool. Thx.
Except if there’d been an option to romance Leonardo, I’d have taken that. I can ignore historical accuracy for that one.
Okay now the short answer is I probably won’t be playing. I play super little these days and basically pick the games I do end up playing very carefully. I might follow where it goes, though.

4:10 PM
I can’t say a lot of things for lots of reasons.
TOP 5 (which I can talk about). In no order.
PLAYS
The Last Wife was my biggest surprise of the year. I went into it thinking I’d hate it, but was charmed by the pace of the script, the quick staging, the ensemble and pretty much everything about it.
Passing Strange made me actually appreciate a musical which I’ve long hated.
Prince Hamlet made me get Hamlet for the first time.
Fish Eyes Trilogy was a masterclass in BAM.
Superior Donuts had one of my favourite fights I’ve ever seen on a Toronto Stage. Corner Gas meets violence. So much heart and an incredible set.
BONUS CREDITS: Delirium, Pearle Harbour’s Chataqua, True North Mixtape, Less, Dolphin,
FILMS
3 Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - Loved how you cared about every single character.
Lady Bird - Coming of Age done right. So economic aside from a kind of extra ending.
Get Out - I’ve never seen Luke cry in a theatre before or an entire theatre cheer when a hero finally gets his justice. I’ve also never felt as relieved as I did when the ending came. So well thought out.
Baby Driver - Style for dayyys. Jamie Foxx, Eiza Gonzalez and John Hamm kill it.
The Disaster Artist - Made me sniffle a bit I loved how they didn’t go for the cheap laugh in making fun of Tommy Wiseau. You really get that he tried to make this movie in spite of his utter lack of ability.
Bonus Credits: It, The Florida Project, Ingrid Goes West, Coco, Shape of Water, Logan, Wonder Woman, A Silent Voice, Your Name
Games
Dragon Age Inquisition - I sunk 80 hours into this and still haven’t beaten it.My quinari mage will reign someday.
Persona 5(!) - Futaba’s social link is probably my favourite social link in all personas because it deals with anxiety, trauma and agoraphobia in a way that I dunno....just works for me. I also love how you’re actually an underdog in this one. Everyone hates you because you’re a criminal, so the bonds you form are actually REAL. Sure there’s a load of problematic stuff (which is IMO, more a problem with Japanese RPGs as a whole regarding the way they treat women and queer folk), and the villains are saturday morning cartoon characters, and the plot falls apart at the end, but I think the idea of a bunch of losers banding together will ALWAYS appeal to me. It’s the only Persona where i cared about the main story more than the social links. In fact, it’s also the only persona where I didn’t want to romance anyone because they seemed like real, cool, people.
Breath of the Wild (my first Zelda! - If Studio Ghibli and Skyrim had a baby. I loved how the story existed if you sought it out, but wasn’t there if you didn’t make an effort to find it. I loved Zelda’s character development. I loved how much PERSONALITY the world had and how sparse it was. I didn’t like the young female voice acting (why are they speaking in their headvoice). And that SCORE THOUGH.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mETAEJY_rk8
Tales of Berseria - Combat was completely underwhelming and the backtracking sucked, but there was something so endearing about playing as antagonists that I really appreciated. Especially considering how in the first hour you burn half a bishonen’s face off. I also cried like a baby. Next to Abyss, one of the best Tales stories for me. Too bad the combat is broken and the world is boring af. If only they could have the world of Vesperia, the story of Abyss/Vesperia and the combat of Graces (which they almost did, but Velvet breaks the game), then we’d be set. Also, get Go Shiina back. Motoi needs a break.
Doki Doki Literature Club - Um. Yeah. I beat this 12 hours ago and can’t stop thinking about it. 2017′s undertale for me. I loved how not only it bent the game save file, but also fucked with the game files itself. One of the more interesting meta narratives I’ve come across. It also raises (though could be explored deeper) some of the problematic elements of moe visual novels, especially in that Monika seems to be unable to control how much she loves you due to her programming. Monika’s awareness that she’s in a game and her frustration toward her affection toward the player created some neat subtext in terms of female characters’ agency vs how they’re written. Super well thought out.
Experiences
2017 was a year of trust for me. Trusting myself, processes and knowing when to let things be.
Silk Bath - continues to be an unexpected surprise. We nearly sold out our entire NSTF run and have a little residency through tarragon’s workspace program. I also think that we’re finally learning what the heart of the play is about and how to work together as a collective.
Bathtub Girls/Weesageechak/Cahoots - I got my first pro dramaturgy gig this year and finally worked with artists who I’ve never met before. AHHH. Both experiences were illuminating in radically different ways. I think, if anything, working as a dramaturg has given me the ability to trust in other artists more. From the work with the foremen, to being in natural resources and now training as a dramaturg, I’d like to think I’m becoming a better collaborator and facilitator rather than dictator director. Madeleine Says Sorry this summer (an unexpected hit) had a very different directorial process because I feel I trusted the artists more than I usually do. I still have my usual rigor, but sometimes letting things happen and planting seeds is better than bluntly throwing someone down a corridor so to speak.
Knife - continues to be developed at Factory. I’ve never been in development with a script this long, but it’s so informative to be in a process where a company is invested in it’s development first rather than rushing it to the stage. It’s been all sorts of challenging in ways where I feel I’ve almost got it, but then missed, or moments where I think I’ve blown it and it actually works. I think one of my biggest realizations from 2016 was that I can’t rush work out. And with Knife, I’m learning the benefits of taking my time, but also what a longer commitment feels like when the inside (does that sound gross). As it continues to shift and change, I’m excited to see where it goes. It’s good also knowing that someone has your back. I’m going into a workshop in April, but there’s still loads more work to do, which is both daunting and exciting.
I NOW KNOW HOW TO MAKE BEEF STEW WITH TENDER MEAT - So like not really an accomplishment, but fuck it, it’s actually a big one. Beef Stew is my favourite food of maybe all time. More than sushi, more than pasta, more than anything. My family on my mom’s side used to run the only Chinese restaurant in levack. They had to feed miners, so they learned how to make their food. It’s a family recipe that’s not really a secret, but no one knows how to make it as good as my Poi Poi. My version is a little different, but it tastes great! - and this is weird - it makes me feel more a part of my family than anything else.
Knowing when to leave - I left two theatre companies I helped found this year. There are a lot of reasons associated with this (both personal and not so personal), but I think I’m figuring out what I want as an artist and my personal ethos in making work. And there’s some things I’m not willing to compromise.
2017 was a development year, but strangely enough by NOT putting out so much work, I feel even more connected to my community and my peers through my work. I feel like - if just a little - I’m more present in shows and conversations. But most importantly, I think I’m not trying as hard as I used to. I’m trying to let my work speak for itself and live a normal, beef stewy life.
Onwards!
