Source: A Knight in Battle -- R. Ewart Oakeshott (Alt text under the cut)
Text: Here are a few examples of the numbers of men called up for some English armies. Keep in mind: This is only the number called up; the number who actually showed up would be less, and once the campaign got under way, men dropped out constantly because of sickness and desertion. So even before anyone was wounded or killed in battle, the army would be shrinking. At the battle of Lewes during the Barons' War of 1263-1267, maybe some 11,000 men were engaged on both sides, so 4,500 or so on the barons' side and 6,500 on the king's. Of these only a few were knights, for during Henry III's reign there were probably no more than 400 knights available at any one time in all of England and Wales. This doesn't mean there were only 400 knights altogether; only 400 were available for fighting. It has been estimated that in 1277, when Edward I raised his army for his first Welsh campaign, 7000 knights existed in England, Wales, and Scotland, though only a portion of them (The text cuts off)

Pre-Owned Albion Knight Sword
Blade: Sharp – Very good condition and has not been used for cutting. Only very minor / light cosmetic blemishes with concentration of scuffs near base of blade
Hilt: – Very good condition. Minor amount of light cosmetic blemishes overall though there is a concentration of light scratches on pommel from use of a scuff pad
Construction: Sword is still durably constructed to factory standard
A sword of type XII, according to Oakeshotts typology, is defined by having a broad and evenly tapering blade. It should have a good point and a fuller that is 2/3 to 3/4 of the blade length. This is perhaps the most classic of all blade styles. So much so that it is close to being the very archetype of the European knightly sword. The heft of this sword is managed by an effective use of nonlinear distal taper and a deep and well defined fuller. This results in a lively and responsive feel that invites you to strike with the sword. The pommel of this sword is of type J: a deep wheel pommel with concave bevels. It is crowned by a high rivet block. The cross is a version of style 2: a straight type of octagonal section that swell at the ends and in the middle. The outer third of the blade towards the point curves gradually to a sharp point. This gives a visual balance to the broad base of the blade and also helps in establishing sweet handling characteristics.
The Albion Knight Sword features a sharpened high carbon steel blade heat-treated to a fine temper in the Albion Forge Shop. The grip is of stabilized birch, wrapped with cord and covered with the highest grade vegetable-tanned calfskin. The guard and pommel are solid steel.

Has Isabel Oakeshott crippled the already faltering public trust in journalism? It was her that leaked the WhatsApp messages she had been given in confidence by the hapless and trusting ex Health Secretary, Matt Hancock. And does the content of the message dispel any possibility of trusting Hancock himself?

So you're known moron and charisma-vacuum Matt Hancock
No, people, this is a hypothetical - you don't need to commit ritual suicide or projectile-vomit into a bin. Come back. Okay.
And you're in charge of the government's health department during a pandemic that is killing over a hundred thousand people, because we are honestly scraping the barrel at this point, but you end up breaking your own quarantine rules because you can't keep your dick in your pants. And you're forced to resign.
You are shocked - SHOCKED! - to learn that going on 'I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here' does not actually count as understanding what you've done wrong, apologising, and making amends. Okay, okay. Obviously the bereaved and traumatised public just don't understaaaaaaaaaaaand.
So you'll write a book.
Except you can't actually write, so you'll hire a ghostwriter. And you've got a bunch of sensitive secret messages showing how badly the government mishandled a lethal pandemic, so your ghostwriter has to not just write well, but be utterly loyal and discreet.
How about...someone who is ideologically opposed to your key policy? No, no that's stupid.
How about...someone who is ideologically opposed to your key policy AND shopped Vicky Pryce to the cops instead of protecting her journalistic sources? No, that's also stupid.
How about...someone who is ideologically opposed to your key policy AND shopped Vicky Pryce to the cops instead of protecting her journalistic sources AND wrote a book telling the world a previous Prime Minister had fucked a dead pig? Yes! Isabel Oakeshott is the one. What could possibly go wrong?

New Years Grieve
MURDER IN THE DARK The Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham, Tuesday 7th November 2023 This new thriller from writer Torben Betts is a little misleading from the off.  The title does not describe what we get – unlike Snakes On A Plane!  Rather, the murder-in-the-dark refers to the game played upon the protagonist by a cruel babysitter many years ago.  It’s also, somewhat unlikely, the title of a song…

REGIONALISMO, IDEOLOGIA E CONSERVADORISMO

It is impossible to quantify the impact Ewart Oakeshott had on the modern renaissance of interest in the Medieval sword. His classification system is the common parlance in the discussion of the Medieval sword. The inspiration for this model is a beautiful, remarkably well-preserved sword in the Wallace Collection (London) with a hollow-ground cross-section. Scholars generally have dated this sword to the 14th century, but Oakeshott in Records of the Medieval Sword argues that it is probably much earlier — between 1050 and 1150 AD. Though the point is narrow enough for thrusting, this is principally a cutting sword, designed for use against opponents in mail armour. This is a unique design for a Crusader era sword, elegant and yet still brutally functional.

For the past eight or so years I've had a very specific idea of what I want done with my body when I die. Which is, I want to be made into a sword. As in, I want my bones to be used to carburize steel and have that made into a sword.
I have written instructions on how to do this.

Ms Duane tumblr needs to know how you feel about being a playable character in Write n Fight. Neil Gaiman & Chuck Tingle have weighed in, now we just need you and Seanan McGuire for Blorbo Bingo

I'd happily be a playable character if I could be one who uses a sword. (An Oakeshott Type XIII by preference. A katana would be very much a second choice [even though I have a lot more training with those] since iaido tends to make for very short fights that leave the viewers going "wait, what just happened there??".)
Otherwise I would prefer to be an NPC who leans against the nearest wall critiquing the fighters' style and making side bets on how long they'll last. :)

Early 18th Century Venetian 'Schiavona' Sword
The Schiavona is an iconic basket-hilted sword that was closely associated with the Italian city state of Venice. The earliest examples are believed to have come from an elite body of Slavic soldiers hired by the Venetian council, and date back as far as the late 16th Century.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Schiavona are identified by their unique basket hilts and 'cats head' pommels. The renowned sword historian and author, Ewart Oakeshott grouped the schiavona basket hilts into two broad categories, the simplified Type 1 with it's broad flat bars, and the Type 2 of lattice work design.
They Type 1 hilt began to appear around the early 1600's and the first Type 2 between 1620 and 1630. Type 1's remained in use for most of the 17th Century after which Type 2 hilts became dominant.
Over the life of schiavona swords, (1600 - 1797) their hilts became increasingly complex and ornate as they became associated with the character of Venice, with the upper levels of society also carrying their own schiavonas.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Based on the features of the hilt, this sword most likely dates to 1710 - 1740. The iron pommel and 93 cm blade suggest that it is of munitions grade and was likely carried by a regular cavalry man.
Stats: Overall Length - 1,075 mm Blade Length - 930 mm Point of Balance - 165 mm Grip Length - 135 mm Inside Grip Length - 94 mm Weight - 1,090 grams
