I keep toying with writing this, because words are hard and I'm not sure how to fully articulate this thought.

However, it's something I've sensed very deeply and I think it's important to start trying to talk about.

Much has been said about how traumatic Oct. 7th was for Israelis and really Jews the world over, and lots has been said about why that was - from the fact that it happened on what was supposed to be a joyous holiday, the fact that this violence was as barbarous and sadistic as it was, the fact that it drew on deep historical wells of intergenerational trauma, to the fact that it was met with immediate denial, betrayal, and even celebration from supposedly progressive goyim - but something I have not seen much discussion on is how that ongoing denialism and even celebration of the carnage made sure that the trauma stuck.

See the thing is that one of the best predictors of favorable recovery outcomes from trauma is the support the victim receives, especially in the immediate aftermath. Victims with strong support networks, who are believed and whose grievances are taken seriously, recover much faster and much more holistically even from objectively worse traumas than victims who lack support and/or whose traumatic experiences are denied or dismissed. Seems obvious enough, right? That's why advocates for survivors exhort communities to listen to survivors and victims, and to hold space for them. We know what happens when that support is denied.

In some ways, the Jewish people is like a horrible case study in what happens when that denial of support happens - not just on a large scale, but over the course of time through numerous generations. In every generation they come for us, and every generation has the opportunity to step up. And so far, every generation has failed the task. (There are of course, some wonderful individuals who do step up; however they are the exception that proves the rule.)

The sadistic celebration of atrocities committed against Israelis and the denialism were not just unpleasant side concerns - these were active components of the violence.

The bottom line is this: if you deny the atrocities of Oct. 7th and the ongoing hostage crisis or try to excuse or downplay them, you are actively participating in violence against us.

And yes, of course these atrocities do not justify atrocities in return. Yes, of course confirming facts is important. But I think a big part of why we can't "just move on" to talk about other atrocities is because you people have never acknowledged our pain or let us grieve or be human. Not once. And the longer that goes on, the deeper the wound and the longer the road to healing from this trauma gets.

9.000 palestinians were killed in 3 weeks of bombings and the USA has just approved $14bi in additional military aid for Israel, on top of the annual $3.8bi Joe Biden instituted 28 years ago. Israel has targeted an ambulance convoy near Al-Shifa hospital, which was evacuating wounded from hospitals to the Rafah crossing. Al-Shifa is already working at 164% capacity, while 25 of the 35 hospitals in the Gaza Strip have shut down due to damage from bombing and lack of fuel (if I hear another zionist talk about how good Israel is for roof knocking hospitals is I'm going to explode). They did everything Israel asked of them and still they were murdered.

Almost half of these deaths are children, and even in death they're not respected and the US president and western media outlets are casting doubt over the reported numbers, even though they cast no such doubt over the numbers reported by Israel even though there's no official list provided by the government. It's ridiculous how blatantly they are copying Holocaust denialism talking points.

Meanwhile, Israel is enjoying the fog of war to proceed with the ethnic cleasing of the West Bank. Palestinians in Masafer Yatta, that have been intimidated by the construction of settlements hounding them for years, received threats by armed civilians saying they would be killed if they didn't leave in 24h and since then settlers have burned down their homes. Bedouin villages in Hebron, whose population was already routinely brutalized by settlers from the outposts nearby, are receiving equal threats and being terrorized by the destruction of their water supplies, roadblocks and physical violence. This is the largest forced displacement in the West Bank since 1972 and it's all being committed by settlers backed by the IDF. Israeli activists said they don't even know if these settlers are acting at the government's request or if they're just terrorizing people into running away from their homes in their free time. Thousands of Gazans who worked within Israel's "green line" were being held hostage since Oct 7th and reported they were tortured and labeled with numbers around their legs. Today, they were pushed back into southern Gaza amid airstrikes.

Palestinian journalists are being targeted for live streaming their genocide. The least we can do is pay attention and take action. Gazans have said our support lifts their spirits. If nothing else, to lift their spirits.

TOMORROW, NOV 4TH, there will be a National March in Washington DC organized by 500+ orgs and expected to be the largest pro-Palestine movement in the history of the USA. If you can, please attend.

Educate yourself. Read into Palestinian history and the occupation. You can't common sense people out of decades of propaganda. If your arguments crumble when a zionist brings up the "disengagement of Gaza", you have to learn more.

Call your representatives. The Labour Party in the UK had an emergency meeting after several councilors threatened to resign if they didn't condemn Israeli war crimes. Calling to show your complaints works, even more if you live in a country that funds genocide.

I don't want to get in the habit of addressing things other people have said in posts I reblog, because those aren't my words and a reblog isn't a blanket endorsement of everything other people have said. But this topic is really important, so I'll weigh in just this once.

The primary concern I have with the use of the term genocide is Holocaust Inversion. Most people don't have a conception of genocide outside of the holocaust, so the usage of the word genocide is often an obvious ploy to weaponize Jewish suffering against Jewish people. Its sole purpose is to equate Israelis to Nazis and Jewish government to fascism.

Yet, there is a lot of death in Gaza right now. Horrible death, needless death. I think any erasure of that is as horrible as Oct. 7th denial. To outright deny that a genocide is happening exclusively because of the historical reality of the Holocaust isn't just or beneficial. So we have to look at it objectively. As I said earlier today, I'm not an international relations expert, so the following is my understanding and should be taken with large grains of salt.

"Genocide" as a war crime is extremely similar to murder as an individual crime. The key component (besides death) is intention. If you kill someone on accident in most English-speaking countries, you'll likely be charged with manslaughter, not murder. Similarly, genocide requires the intentional destruction of a population of people, well beyond the necessary realities of civilian casualty in active war zones. Death itself, even in large numbers, does not a genocide make. Civilians will always die on the battlefield. Always.

The International Criminal Court says that Israel has to meet standards of care in Gaza to ensure that genocide does not occur, meaning they don't think one has already occurred. There's some dispute on whether or not those standards are being met-- Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International say that Israel is failing to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza, while the Israeli government issued sealed documents to the Hague last month detailing their compliance measures. It'll take a while to hear back on those. Personally, I think starving Gaza is an obvious measure of intention to destroy Palestinian civilians.

Anybody is obviously welcome to disagree with the highest court of international law in the world. But the fact that the experts seem hesitant to make that determination gives me pause. Why are so many people keen to bring Israel to the Hague, not Russia for their indiscriminate killing of Ukrainians or the Houthis for manufacturing a humanitarian crisis in Yemen? Hamas, one of the governments of internationally-recognized Palestine, fully admits to intending to destroy the Jewish people in part. They say they'll do it again if they get half the chance. Why is only the Jewish state called out as a unique, genocidal evil? Must we label Palestinian deaths as a genocide in order to mourn them effectively? Aren't hundreds dead a day reason enough to mourn and to push for peace?

Again, I don't want to deny the allegations of genocide any more than I want to accept them. I'm following the experts on this one. And so far, the experts say "maybe". As long as they say "maybe", anybody who insists on definitely and absolutely labelling it as a genocide creeps at least suspiciously close to Holocaust Inversion in my eyes.

This morning I received an extremely condescending ask, where an anonymous person said they were heartbroken by my recent 'pro-Israel' posts and could not in good conscience engage with my works until I learned to have 'empathy.'

I immediately deleted it, because it was idiotic. But here's the thing: I don't usually post about the war. So then I started thinking about what I posted recently that might be viewed as pro-Israel. And now I'm mad.

Here is a list of posts that might be CONSTRUED as pro-Israel (by this person) starting from most recent back to Oct. 7th:

-A post joking about a misspelled 'happy Hanukkah' greeting

-A post about different types of menorahs

-A post talking about a Philedelphia-based Jewish man who was targeted by violent rioters for the crime of.... donating to a civilian-led non-profit that provides free medical services to Israel.

-A post about misconceptions over the names of places in Israel, and how the Hebrew words are fucking old and basically have nothing to do with colonialism regardless of what you think about the war.

-A post condemning the denial of Hamas rape victims, because Hamas are terrorists, regardless of anything else you might believe about the war,

-A post talking about what zionism actually means, historically, since it's kinda a relevant issue and some people use it improperly.

-A post also talking about the definition of genocide.

-A silly posts about Jewish prayer emojis

-A post which I will quote here, actually:

-A post about biased media coverage.

-A post about a Jewish journalist who feels unsafe.

-A post calling out people for only caring NOW, and only getting angry at Israel, rather than – for example – neighboring Egypt refusing to open the border. Because people love hating Israel without figuring out why.

-Another post by Jewish people alarmed by how VIOLENT people are getting toward them.

-A post again pointing out that you can think both Israel and Hamas are doing bad things, actually.

-A post where I lament that I can't post the next chapter of Without Reason because it included a scene with a synagogue and there's no way I can post it without people assuming it's some sort of commentary on the war.

-A post I can't rapidly summarize but that basically criticizes people being callous and, again, anti-semitic while pretending anti-semitism doesn't exist.

That's it, that's all I can find in a quick search since Oct. 7th. You might notice that none of these are really explicitly pro-Israel. In fact, most of them aren't about Israel at all, and they certainly don't demonize Palestine. So what I'm gathering is that this anon is deeply hurt by my posts about *checks notes* – Jewish holidays, Jewish terminology, and rising anti-semitism.

And a desire for people to calm down and use nuance in their discussions, which I guess is scary to some folks.

My most recent posts are about the holidays. If you cannot read a 'happy hanukkah' message without conflating your political anger – about a war on the other side of the world - with anger toward all Jewish people, I am asking you to examine YOUR lack of empathy, and particularly why it does not extend toward Jews.

And if you don't want to 'engage with my work,' great! I don't write to entertain anti-semites :) So get the fuck away from me.

White supremacy is a mental disease fr, because how can you have posts that says that's what happening in Ukraine is a literal genocide but other posts that says what's happening in Palestine is not a genocide and is just a two-sided war? And that's not including all the 100's of posts about how as an Ukrainian you feel more sympathy and solidarity with Israelis and comparing Palestinians to Russians of all people, but I guess solidarity between White supremacists will always take priority over solidarity between victims of genocide.

Buddy, if it's a disease, call your doctor. You don't get to police how should I think and feel about Israel and Jewish people in the context of October 7th and how pro-Pals spread the most vilest - and easily rebuked - lies about them. You don't get to accuse me of not supporting Palestine enough while outright lying about me, content of my blog, and wilfully ignoring posts in support of Palestine. You don't get to do it - I don't believe you lifted a finger for Ukraine, but even then you would not be entitled to your pseudo righteous anger.

You're not in Palestine, and you are not in Israel, and you are not in Ukraine. Ballistic missiles are not raining on your heads. You're not in a bomb shelter, trying to calm down your cat and your elderly neighbour. You haven't starved a day in your life because it was too dangerous for supplies to be brought in, or because it was literally impossible due to blockade, or because war pushed you well behind the poverty line. You never had to deal with "this horrible terrible thing that happened to those people? Is awesome, but didn't happen, and they deserved it anyway". You never had to guess who will be the next one to die. You never - nothing, anon, you're nothing.

Now, am I talking about Israel, Palestine, or Ukraine? With the exception of starvation, that's all three of us. You don't get to come up to any of us with your white saviour bullshit - you may be black or Asian, from Global South and not the West, idk and idc, bc it's still this fucked up idea that you're the one who knows what's what.

You, frankly, don't know shit.

And don't you talk about solidarity, when you guys were shitting on Ukraine even before HAMAS slaughtered hundreds of Jews, and suddenly y'all care about Palestine and angry with people who are experiencing genocide and not virtue signaling enough. I got death wishes from you self-righteous anons way before I ever said, hey, isn't it fucked up that people deny a terrorist attack that was literally live streamed, happened?

Because let's not mince the words, most of my posts in support of Israel were about the Oct 7th and its aftermath. You don't get to twist my words, saying that I am somehow in denial or support of the genocide of Palestinian people.

You lot, however, are - in support of both genocide of Ukraine and Israel. In actions and in words.

I have as little patience for someone like you as for an Israeli who comes to my posts and comments that I can't be supportive of Palestine. Bitches watch me.

The ripping down of hostage posters, denial of there being hostages, and saying that the hostages were treated well (they weren't) all play a role in further dehumanization of Jews/Israelis.

This also is a major factor of Oct 7th denial in general, but for this post I'll focus more on the hostages.

By saying that there are no hostages or that the hostages are being treated well, antisemites are trying to paint Israel's actions as violence for the sake of violence. And of course, perception of Israel gets spread to Jews globally. (Why? Antisemitism.)

So by successfully manipulating the narrative about Israel to spread what is essentially blood libel, the portrayal of Jews as inherently bloodthirsty and violent, they are able to dehumanize us into bloodthirsty monsters who kill to kill.

While of course it is important to maintain the humanity of the hostages in dialogue for the sake of the hostages, I think it's also important to recognize the importance of this rhetoric to all of us on a personal scale.

The reasonable waging of war requires three elements: motivation, justification, and military capacity.

That is to say, a country without motivation wouldn't wage war because it does not want to, a country without justification could wage war technically but would be deeply looked down upon and condemned much more than a country with justification, and the military capacity is fairly self-explanatory.

Hamas had motivation (killing Jews) and some military capacity, and their "justification" (quotes because what they did is not and cannot be justified) was killing "Zionists". The world seemingly agrees that their justification is valid, which is highly concerning but I'd rather address that in a different post.

Israel's motivation is self-defense. It's the basic need to keep Israelis safe. Israel obviously has military capacity. And Hamas gave Israel justification with their attack and hostage-taking, as self-defense is among the strongest motivators and justifications.

(From how I've discussed the three factors of war in the past these are more so meant to be applied to the initiating side, but bear with me.)

The narrative around Oct 7th right now is one of denial and minimization. By claiming that it wasn't that bad or that it didn't happen, the media is trying to strip Israel of the justification.

See, a country can wage war without justification on a practical level, but it will face many issues from the international community for doing so. Except with Israel, seeing as it's the only Jewish state in the world, any criticism of Israel on the state-level (actual valid government critiques are different) tend to affect Jews globally.

Trying to strip away Israel's valid justification makes Israel falsely appear baselessly violent, aggressive, and bloodthirsty. By extension, the world begins to view Jews in the same way. This whole rhetoric leads to the dehumanization of Jews and Israelis.

So yeah, that's why we're mad about antisemites tearing down the posters and denying/justifying Oct 7th.

Because by doing so, you're dehumanizing us.
