I almost forgot the most important advice for new FFXIV players, even more important than debunking the "ARR sucks" broken record. New players, I want you to listen to me carefully, if you only listen to one piece of advice let it be this:

AVOID THE FANDOM LIKE THE PLAGUE, ESPECIALLY ON TWITTER. BLOCK LIBERALLY AND CURATE LIKE YOU'VE NEVER CURATED BEFORE.

This is a fandom that genuinely has been the most violent black and white switch between good and bad in my experience, the good parts are lifechanging and genuinely worth the risk, but the bad is genuinely the worst and most vile shit you will ever come across. Block every other person and their mother based on vibes alone, chances are you dodged a nuke. That way you can be exposed only to the super fucking awesome stuff that makes your whole damn month.

#the fandom is literally the reason I ended up leaving the game #because I made the mistake of being just a teensy bit too lax on curating #if you don't curate strictly the drama and discourse WILL find you and it's some of the most exhausting shit out there #and don't even get me started on how much worse it gets if you mod at all #if you decide to mod your game DO NOT LOOK INTO THE MODDING SCENE DO NOT DO IT #JUST GET YOUR BLORBO MAKEOVER MODS AND BE DONE WITH IT BE BLISSFULLY UNAWARE #also don't fucking pay for mods there's mod pirating sites I can link you (don't look into them either because it's the same groupy shit) #if you don't have skin thicker than callouses after running on concrete barefoot all summer you will crumble into dust

neopets staff announced today that they're basically an independent company now and are committing to being more communicative and working on what the community actually wants, one of those things being an actual plan for how to bring back the flash games, and i am like... so happy and hopeful about it tbh. i'm afraid to get my hopes up too much only for this to all just be talk and the site to remain in the same sad state it's been in for years, but if they actually follow through with the claims they've made then maybe... neopets could be good again....
