Writing Tips: The One-Location Story
A one-location story, often referred to as a bottle episode or chamber piece, takes place in a limited setting, such as a single room, building, or isolated environment. This narrative structure is typically used in TV or theater to keep production costs low, and creates a unique challenge, and opportunity, for writers.
Why write a One-Location story?
Focused Setting: Having a single location provides a focused and contained backdrop, allowing you to concentrate on the intricacies of character development, dialog, and plot without the need for extensive world-building.
Intimacy: The focus shifts away from the setting(which is always the same) to the characters and dialog. Readers expect a story that is driven more by tension, drama, and interpersonal conflict.
Real-time: One-location stories often unfold in real-time. This simplifies the timeline and contribute to a heightened sense of urgency and suspense.
Common Tropes in One-Location Stories:
Bottleneck Situation: Characters find themselves trapped, forcing them to deal with their issues, fears, and conflicts within the limited space.
Mystery: A classic trope involves a group of characters in a confined space, one of whom is a murderer or has a hidden agenda. This adds an element of danger and intrigue.
Survival Challenge: Characters must navigate challenges within the confined space, such as a natural disaster, technological failure, or external threat, testing their resourcefulness and resilience.
Character Exploration: The confinement becomes a metaphor for self-discovery or existential contemplation, allowing characters to confront their inner demons or make transformative decisions.
Examples:
Locke (2013): The entire film takes place inside a car during a nighttime drive.
The Hateful Eight (2015): A high-suspense meeting of eight mysterious, unlikable characters in a cabin during a blizzard in post-Civil War Wyoming.
The Outfit (2022): An expert tailor must outwit a dangerous group of mobsters in his shop to survive the night.
This is part of my Writing Tips series. I publish writing tips to this blog.

An “what if there’s a pizzaplex location in China” au

They're an Eclipse, but you can just call them Wu Dan
They are a theater bot from the Shanghai pizzaplex, they play the Wu Dan role (female warrior/fighter role) in Traditional Chinese opera. They can sing they can dance, they perform with a spear, and they do Bian Lian mask trick.
Most time they stay as Eclipse but if needed they can switch between Sun and Moon on command. As the picture shows, the red mask is Sun, the Blue mask is moon, the split face is when both are up but not in sync, they can’t stay like that for long it burns their battery, and the white face is Eclipse
Sun is more hot headed and extroverted, Moon is more ‘hohoho I’m evil’ and introverted, when split face, they’re mostly having a fight and they use their traits against each other, when Eclipse, their traits are combined creating an neutralized version of themselves

The ending took a dark, horrible turn. But I had been waiting for a Sixth Sense-esque twist the whole time...
Also, given the tight cast and setting, this could have been easily made into a one-location story.
Sleep (Korean: 잠; RR: jam) is a 2023 South Korean black comedy horror mystery thriller film written and directed by Jason Yu, in his feature debut. The film stars Jung Yu-mi and Lee Sun-kyun.
