The Pacific Rim novelization, generally cursed though it may be, does contain a bit of interesting lore. Presented as part of a magazine article, a strange phenomenon known as drift hangover is described:
…Interviews with former Rangers suggest that their cognitive systems are permanently altered by the experience known as the Drift. They report persistent perceptions that another consciousness is operating in tandem with their own, as well as feelings that each action they take is recreated on a larger scale somewhere else. Some Rangers call this "Drift hangover," but unlike hangovers, it does not appear to diminish over time.
The number of surviving ex-Rangers is very small, necessitating a degree of skepticism when assessing these findings. The Pan-Pacific Defense Corps does not permit external physicians or clinical staff to examine active Rangers, further limiting the available data. Nevertheless, it appears highly probable that the neural handshake causes persistent and perhaps permanent changes to the perceptual systems of the participants.
Also perhaps worthy of further investigation, though likely beyond the purview of this journal, are the claims of certain Rangers that they remained connected to their Jaegers even after the neural handshake and the Drift were terminated. Numerous anecdotal reports of exist of Jaegers shifting with no Ranger in control of them, with attendant claims that these motions replicated the sleeping motions of the Rangers assigned to that particular Jaeger.
If substantiated, these claims would characterize the nature of the neural handshake in a profoundly different light. They would also raise the specter of a sort of imprinted simulacrum of consciousness in the Jaegers themselves…

The fact that the reason that Raleigh didn't appear in Pacific Rim: Uprising is because he died from radiation poisoning is an absolute CRIME.

Raleigh saw her again, reliving that day, and he relived it right with her. He'd been there with her, in the Drift. It wasn't like any Drift he'd ever felt. Broken, yes, but also more intense. ... With Mako, his Drift had been more like a movie where he was both a spectator and a character. – (Pacific Rim: The Official Movie Novelization, 2013)

I needed to get that Pacific Rim AU brainrot outta my head so here we've got some dossier files for this AU. I feel like they tell a lot about the backstory I want to go with but maybe it's just me - I mean, if you want to make some guesses I don't mind rumbling some potential fic spoilers at you...
The timeline is loose so don't be scared by the mixed birth dates, etc.
Sorry if they aren't the greatest quality... Text in the alt

Thinking about the way the Pacific Rim novelization implied that the reason they couldn't get Lady Danger shut down when Mako Mori had her flashback was because she had a psychic connection with it. That was a thing. Like if that was a thing that was in the worldbuilding notes Alex Irvine got... makes me wonder if that was something del Toro planned to explore in the sequel, and where it would've gone. 🤔

if you are a pacific rim fan and you havent read this fic you need to it is Thee pacific rim fic of all time ive never read a fic thats so in character in my life. the writing is incredibly evocative and it does so much cool stuff with the drift
Summary: One day he looks up from the scaffolding and realizes that he’s almost exactly at Jaeger height and has to wrap his hand tight against the metal to keep from stepping out into the air. Not because he wants to kill himself or anything, just because for a split second his mind felt that old equilibrium and he just knew he should be able to, should be able to walk straight across the valley in front of him and out into the sea and on forever until he finds whatever’s next.

10 First Lines Game
Tagged by @specialagentartemis (thanks for thinking of me!)
“Rules: share the first lines of ten of your most recent fanfics and tag ten people. If you have written less than ten, don’t be shy and share anyway ❤️”
At Artemis' suggestion, I'm playing fast and loose with the rules and including original fiction too. I feel like I don't talk about my writing in much detail and many of these projects are not online, so I've included some context!
When Gareth Last gets to the top of the stairs to his office on Germantown Ave, someone is already standing there, waiting. “Latent Defects”, last worked on today. Latent Defects is a bi 1980s detective novel I started during NaNoWriMo 2018 and have been working on since. I don’t want to jinx it, but I think I’m getting close to a version I'd be comfortable asking for feedback on! HMU if we're mutuals and you want to read a 350-page manuscript soon (realistically a few months from now).
Kim closes his Mnemotechnique A6 and aligns his pen beside it on the desk. “Boot Black”, last worked on today. I started writing this fic about an undernegotiated BDSM scene between Kim Kitsuragi and Harry du Bois in February because of an intoxicated tag I left on this poor, unsuspecting artist’s drawing of Kim Kitsuragi. It's nearly finished.
He shows him the picture. “Rabbit Vector.” “This is Not a Virtual Simulation”, last worked on March 2023. This year I started outlining a new version of a very old cyberpunk heist novel project. I'm still in the R&D phase, but I did write a first line (or two).
PROBLEM: Lieutenant Kitsuragi seems repressed. “Thought Acquired: Manic Pixie Dream Detective”, finished February 2023. I wrote this Kim/Harry short in the style of Disco Elysium’s Thought Cabinet. An amusing exercise.
It doesn’t feel right to be back at the new school in Trenton so soon, after spending last night watching the shamash until it went out with his siblings. “That’s How Accidents Happen”, finished October 2022. A Latent Defects short about the love interest Luke Whittaker’s adolescent crush on his high school shop teacher.
The first 30% of Hermann’s flare came from his and Newton’s ill-advised drift with the Kaiju fetus. “It’s the Weather, You Imbecile”, finished September 2022. After joining AO3 and revising my old fics to upload them there, the spirit of 2013 possessed me to write this Pacific Rim porn.
At Goodwill in boy mode, I watch for other shoppers in the mirror above the racks. “#191970 Midnight Blue” for The HTML Colors Zine, finished April 2022. I had a blast writing ten 50-word stories inspired by HTML colors for this zine I found out about on Twitter. Artemis also has some work in here!
A man tried to sell me a daydream today. Adaptive Daydreaming”, last worked on December 2021. One of a few ideas I have in a universe loosely inspired by William Gibson’s “simstim” technology (my version is a device called the SenShare). This one is also inspired by bullshit-artist corporate coaches.
He’s glad he’s sitting on the exam table, because the patterned cotton johnny is too small. “The Transformation”, last worked on January 2021. This was going to be a short story about a doctor dismissing a fat character’s strange symptoms, which turn out to be the lead-up of the character turning into a terrible (yet awesome) monster.
Connor remembers enough to know it wasn’t her fault. “Neural Feedback Loop”, finished/last worked on September 2020. Another SenShare device story. In this one, a cyclist disabled by a car accident takes revenge by using the SenShare to force the pain of her injuries onto the driver.
What have we learned today?
Unlike Artemis, I rarely if ever start a story with a line of dialogue
Despite my best efforts, ~70% of my recent work features a man as the main character
Most of the fanfiction I write is porn, while most of the original fiction I write is not
I tend to start with a zoomed-out generalization, a habit I do not love about myself
Please consider yourself tagged if you want an excuse to share, but I'll also tag @cryptiq @sealcontent @absolutely-basted @animeisgod @tadpoleconspiracy @definitionsfading @saxifraga-x-urbium with the general directive of "I'd love to hear about any category of writing you're working on, but no pressure".

Wait, did I send you an ask or not yet... Oh well, have another:
Would you ever write a novel for an established franchise, like Star Trek?
I would, but I feel like I'd gravitate toward franchises that no one has ever heard of, like Make My Day or Godzilla Singular Point (can you tell I have Netflix and I like watching random anime). If it were something more popular I feel like it would be a video game rather than a TV series/movie, like Risk of Rain 2. I could see myself doing novelizations of animated kids' movies though.
Would I ever write…

I forgot just how deeply cursed Alex Irvine's novelization of Pacific Rim is until I went skimming through the book looking for material that might have been sourced from Newt and Hermann's original character bios.
Among many, many other cursed things, the book makes Newt a big fan of laissez-faire capitalism, and he likes it when it gets involved with public programs: Newt was almost as surprised. The entire Pan-Pacific Defense initiative was funded by a black marketeer who recouped his investment by selling parts of the kaiju whose killing he had financed. And some of the parts were purchased by Kaiju Science! Newt probably had tissue and organs on his lab tables that came from this Hannibal Chau person.
Now that was a public-private partnership, Newt thought admiringly. Oh, and remember in the movie, where Newt shoves Hercules Hansen aside and yells, "Move, you fascist!"? Yeah. Not here. Nope. Alex Irvine makes Newt a good little respecter of military guys:
Newt and Gottlieb stormed into the LOCCENT disheveled, out of breath, and stinking like kaiju guts.
“It’s not going to work! It’s not going to work!” Newt shouted.
Herc held up both hands and the two scientists skidded to a halt in front of him.
Oh, and Raleigh Becket really likes it when strict roles and separation of classes: Herc and Chuck Hansen sat together at the edge of the maintenance bay overseeing the work but staying out of the way of their crews. Raleigh knew Herc a bit from his first tour, but had only seen Chuck on TV. They were cool and professional. Techs did the maintenance. Pilots did the piloting. Didn’t do anyone any good to get those roles confused.
The whole book is just... like this; it exudes a constant low-grade miasma of super fucked up shit.

The Pacific Rim novelization has Herc Hansen looking at Newt and Hermann like "I wonder what they think of me, I bet they think I'm all old and washed up" like HELLO you people are ALL MILLENNIALS HERE????
