This is the concept art I was referring to
Oh, no, there's nothing ghostly about that.
In that version of the story, there's this gazebo/shrine that has multiple murals, and Rapunzel goes to look at it (later replaced by her seeing the mural in the town square). But this is also the version of the story where Eugene makes a deal with Gothel while they're camping, presumably to turn Rapunzel over to her:
So that moment that you showed me was Gothel springing the trap on Rapunzel.
Unfortunately, I don't know enough about this version of the plot to answer any further questions about it. I don't know if Eugene just had a change of heart or decided not to turn Rapunzel over and it was too late or what. Heck, I don't even know if Eugene was named anything but Flynn in this version.
