This is a reblog of Choice, a fic I released in January, in honor of the @rareomens event!

I'm totally normal about this ship, I didn't have 12-Feb marked on my calendar to look for new content... Nope, totally normal over here, nothing to see...

At first I wanted you because you were beautiful.

Oh Lord, but you were beautiful.

The first time I caught sight of you in the darkness of the budding universe, starlight tangled in your hair, the brightness of creation shining in your eyes. How I had wanted you, there and then. The yearning possessed me, ached in my core, intruded on my thoughts. I passed the nights in my quarters, feeling every needling second as I waited for the appointed time to return to the stars beside you.

I could not say when the furtive glances and carefully incidental grazes began. I tried to deny the feeling, dampen the hope that there was a pattern behind the brief encounters. A side-effect of working in close proximity, I told myself, encounters that were unavoidable and meaningless. Nothing more than happenstance, and surely not borne from your desire. A friction, exciting atoms to emit heat, pleasant in the moment—how I burned for you—but chafing in the aftermath when you pulled away. And so I attempted to deceive myself.

Six days I waited for your approach, listened for your voice, felt the phantoms of your touch. You were pulled away, conversing in hushed whispers and strident tones. Angels I had never seen demanded your attention… I sat on the precipice, waiting for any breeze to tip me over the edge.

On the seventh day, you approached me for the third time. Before I heard you, I sensed you—a star binding a body in its orbit, I was drawn to you, encompassed now by a force I could not resist. Even if I could have broken the tether, I did not desire escape. I stilled as you neared, holding my breath, thrumming with anticipation. Your hand hovered between my wings, a touch so light my back prickled as you leaned over my shoulder, breath hot on my ear.

“Plans are progressing.” Your fingers slipped over the primary feathers to the soft coverts and I shuddered in pleasure.

“The observatory tonight after evening prayer. Let me show you what could be.” You spoke the words with your nose tucked beneath my jaw and I knew you could feel my pulse racing beneath the thin skin.

Your fingertips dug into my back and I arched into the sharpness. “I will not ask again.”

You withdrew, leaving me churning in your wake.

When Comes the Dawn, book 1 of 2

Slide 2: wdym my fantasy story has to have magic?

Set in a fantasy world loosely set in the late antiquities/early middle ages., where everyone alive has the capability to harness magic. But actually using it requires strict and intensive education (and maybe a phD or 5) so most people only know very basic spells.

In Trinitarian belief, it’s believed that the goddess Meidther gave her blood to bring humans to life, and because of that people are imbued with magic. No living person can be alive without magic because it’s literally impossible! Wait -- the emperor of Aetier has a what????

So there’s this weird phenomenon where on very rare occasions, babies will be born without magic. Called “deadbornes”, these babies are incompatible with life and usually end up passing away minutes to days later. With one notable exception (we’ll circle back to this later)

Slide 3: the set-up

The Empire of Aetier (or if you ask any local: “the gods’ specialist little empire”) has a very unique way of handling succession in the imperial family. That way is murder. Just murder. All heirs plot against one another in a formal-informal system called “The King’s Game.” It’s supposed to be a competition of skills, but it’s kind of warped itself into state-sanctioned fratricide (NOT to be confused with a battle royale. That’s just uncouth /j)

The last King’s Game ended 22 years ago, when Dantalion vi Aetier defeated and killed his half-sister in battle. As the victor, he crowned himself the new Vasilier of the empire and proceeded to bring in a new golden age of prosperity for his people. And nothing is wrong and everything is beautiful, and there is no way this can go wrong

... right?

It all starts on the day Fenice was born... where instead of being the healthy and uber powerful child Dantalion expected her to be, Fenice turns out to be a deadborne. Deadbornes are considered harbingers of ill omens, and siring one is a terrible way to start your new reign. And even stranger still is the fact that Fenice...doesn’t die? Someone call the priest and ask them what does it mean if your death omen refuses to go away

Slide 4: The plot

The end of the Hesperia-Aetier war brought new lands under the Empire’s rule, and with it, new ways to gain power and prestige in the Imperial Court. The biggest thorn in the empire atm is that Hesperia’s last king is still wandering the lands somewhere, waiting to strike.

Imperessa Fenice vi Aetier (who’s still alive and kicking) just lost her mom in the war, and now she’s desperate to prove herself to her estranged father that she’s more than a disappointment and wasted potential. And what better way to do that than to succeed him as the next Vasilier?

The problem? Only those that undergo an Ascension are considered legitimate contenders for the throne. The other problem? Dantalion won’t give her one.

Fenice: “Trade offer: I receive my own province to rule and an Ascension. You receive the head of the deposed king of Hesperia.” Dantalion: “Deal. But you have to marry his brother though” Fenice: “What”

Now wedded and gifted with a province of her own to rule , Fenice actually has to set-up her own power base and follow through with her end of the deal to find and kill the runaway king, as well as extinguish the rebellions he’s so keen on igniting.

But the more she looks for him, the more she realizes he’s being backed by someone much more powerful. But who?

And on totally unrelated note, there seems to be some weird rumors going around of some guy claiming to be Aretos vi Aetier, the son of the very same person Dantalion killed during the King’s Game 20+ years back. But that’s obviously fake news. Surely no one will fall for it!

Wicked and Wild Wind

Ace Omens Hugfest 2024 prompt - "a really long hug"

London, 1380

The storm raged, wind whipping Aziraphale’s cloak as he ran through the darkened city. Something was wrong. He could feel it, a gnawing dread that curled around him like a cat around a mouse.

“Crowley?” he called, thrusting out his lantern. “Crowley, is that you?”

He must be here somewhere. Aziraphale could sense him, his presence so familiar after all these millennia. But the usual starry essence was veiled, as if cloaked by the clouds that rumbled low and heavy over London.

“Crowley!” Trembling, Aziraphale stopped and twisted from side to side. The cold drizzle of rain drummed down harder, plinking off the metal top of his lantern. “Crowley, where are you? Please answer me!”

There was no verbal answer, but he felt something else. A faint flicker in the astral planes, off down an alley to his left.

He rushed down the alley, heartbeat pounding in his ears. A dark lump sprawled in the middle of the narrow space, unmoving.

“Crowley!” Aziraphale flung himself to his knees on blood spattered wet cobblestone. He slid his hand under Crowley’s head, turning him, and smoothed bedraggled hair out of his face. “Crowley, dear boy, it’s me. It’s Aziraphale. What’s happened?”

Golden eyes squinted up at him from behind cracked, askew dark glasses. Crowley drew a ragged breath and fumbled at Aziraphale’s tunic. “You… came. Wasn’t sure you’d hear me.”

“I felt it, that something was wrong.” Carefully, Aziraphale touched his bruised cheek. Oh, his skin was so cold. “What’s happened, Crowley? Who did this?”

“Humans. Greedy little bastards mugged me.” Crowley coughed, and blood dribbled across his lips. “Beat the shit out of me.”

“Oh, oh.” Aziraphale carefully lifted and cradled Crowley across his lap, wincing as he hissed in pain. “There, easy. Just trying to keep you warm, that’s it. Oh, you’re absolutely drenched!”

“S’ what happens after lying in the rain for…” Crowley hissed again, shuddering as Aziraphale pushed back the torn black cloak and examined his side. “For however long. Ow, that hurts.”

“I’m afraid that’s because you’re quite hurt.” And would need to be at least somewhat healed before Aziraphale could move him. But he couldn’t keep getting rained on. This was a recipe for hypothermia. “Just try to stay conscious, hmm? I’ll take care of you.”

Aziraphale pulled his wings into physical reality and swept them forward to shelter Crowley as much as possible. He hugged the shivering body of his friend close and began to mend the damage.

His wings couldn’t entirely keep Crowley dry, alas, not even when he angled them to try to deflect the sheeting rain. There was simply too much wind, sudden gusts of it blasting his feathers out of the way. Crowley gave a miserable moan, and Aziraphale held him closer.

At least the healing wasn’t too terribly complicated. Crowley was quite battered, but with a minimum of broken bones. Aziraphale healed the shattered ribs first, then moved on to the rest of the damage.

“You’re really warm,” Crowley mumbled as Aziraphale mended his bruises and scrapes. “S’ nice. Haven’t been held like this in a while. Missed it.”

Aziraphale paused, somewhat alarmed by the comment. Crowley was so rarely open about his feelings, but perhaps it was the cold and injury. “Yes, it has been a bit. Um… was it a decade ago, when we got caught in that snowstorm and had to take shelter in a barn?”

“Yeah.” Crowley sounded much happier than was reasonable, given the circumstances. “Huddled together all night.”

The memory tugged at Aziraphale’s heart, stirring up feelings he never allowed himself to contemplate once the moment had passed. Fear for a demon, the sense of dread at the thought of losing him. The tenderness and love that rose whenever he held Crowley close. And something else.

“We did, yes.” As the wind whipped around them, Aziraphale gave in, allowing himself to indulge even if only for this night. “Do you know, I think we ought to do that tonight, too. Huddle, I mean. You are awfully chilled.”

“S’ a fair point.” Crowley managed a weak smile, still awfully pale. “Probably need to miracle our clothes dry, mind. Or it’s not gonna be terrifically effective.”

“Yes, well. I’ll handle that once we’re out of the rain.”

First, though, Aziraphale used a small miracle to deflect attention. He had no intention of putting his wings away just now. And the last thing they needed were screaming humans, although no one seemed to be out in the wicked storm.

He picked Crowley up, cradling him carefully, and set off through the storm. Crowley’s eyes closed, and he still drew ragged breaths despite the lack of broken ribs. No longer wounded, but certainly drained.

The dim lights of the bookshop that Aziraphale ran glistened up ahead. He shouldered inside, his own teeth chattering, and gave Crowley an unsteady smile. “Well, we’ve made it. I’ll put you down now, and—”

“D’ya have to?” Crowley asked, rather sleepily. “S’ nice. Like… like getting a really long hug.”

Aziraphale paused, briefly conflicted, then put his wings away and used a quick miracle to dry them both. He took Crowley to a little bed in the backroom, and sat down with him still cradled close. “Here we are, that’s much nicer. May I let go of you for just a moment to adjust?”

“Nuh.”

“Really, my dear?” But Aziraphale looked at Crowley’s contented expression, his head pillowed on Aziraphale’s shoulder, and melted at once. It was rather like having a stubborn cat in his lap. “Very well, dear boy. How long am I to hug you for?”

“Hn, dunno.” With a quiet noise, Crowley snuggled closer. “Forever?”

Aziraphale smiled, although a few tears stung his eyes. Oh, how he would love to hold Crowley forever, to keep him safe and warm and happy. It wasn’t possible, of course.

But for tonight, with Crowley needing to recover, there really was no reason to let go anytime soon. “I’ll give you as much of forever as I can spare, my dear.”

I haven't watched Leverage in a while, see my last complaint post about their Stuxnet episode. But in the meantime I've been consuming other media, and it just struck me how equal the dynamic is between all of the Leverage characters.

Every character in this show is competent. They each have Their Thing that They Do, and if one of them is absent for an episode, the rest of the team suffers until they get back. I complain about them short-changing Hardison by making the tech stuff unrealistic and incomprehensible (so you can't get a feel for how good he is at it, like you can with Eliot punching people -- although if I knew more about fighting I'm sure I'd be complaining about Eliot's scenes too). But at least within the narrative he is really good at his job, and the other team members know it. Likewise for Eliot, Parker, Nate, and Sophie -- they're each at the top of their respective classes. They have separate specialties and they're amazing at those specialties.

And what's more, the interpersonal dynamics reflect this. Nate is an asshole to the rest of them, but there are FOUR OF THEM so it balances him out -- they can commiserate with each other, sit him down and have a talk with him, threaten to strike, whatever, and their side of the relationship is treated with importance because the team couldn't function without them.

Hardison and Eliot's sniping is just friendly banter, and they know it. Everyone is so supportive of Parker's social problems. Sophie is the one with the most traditionally-feminine skillset, something which might be demeaned in another show (and I have some complaints with Leverage's treatment of her), but she's taken seriously both in-universe and by the show itself. They all work wonderfully together. They balance each other out, and they become more than the sum of their parts.

Contrast this with the dynamics in a bunch of other modern media. Let's grab my favorite punching bag of late, BBC Sherlock. Sherlock is far and away the more useful member of the Sherlock-and-John team. The narrative places incredible weight on his intelligence, and John is stuck in a support role. Sherlock is also mean to John, and since John is one person (without much of a spine for standing up to Sherlock!) it feels utterly abusive. The "friendly banter" isn't banter. The "aww look they really DO care about each other" moments were enough for me when I was 13 or 14, but now it just feels like a cycle of abuse. The dynamic is fundamentally not equal. If I'm watching a TV show and I start to think "man character A really needs like 6 months of therapy to stop hating themself and they NEED to leave character B," when the show's message is "character A and character B are a match made in heaven you guys," the show has failed.

See also Our Flag Means Death season 2 with the relationship between... honestly Ed and the rest of the crew, but mostly Ed and Stede. Ed is the best pirate anyone's ever seen -- the rest of them are pretty good but no match for him. The one guy who had a chance of standing up to Ed and equalizing things got killed off at the end of the season, and Stede (as we've seen) lacks a spine to stand up to Ed. Controversial take but Good Omens might be heading in this direction? They defanged Aziraphale and made him into way more of a softie than the book or Season 1 imply. Meanwhile Crowley is Competent and Right About Everything by comparison. The general pattern here is that couples (or whatever the fuck was going on with BBC Sherlock and John) are worse off. I don't know if it's lasting heteronormativity or "two-person dynamics are hard," but the urge to make sunshine-and-stormcloud pairings where the stormcloud acts like shit towards the sunshine is just... too strong.

Leverage is this rare show that refuses to shit on any of its protagonists. Everyone's in the loop, everyone sees some character development, and it fucking RULES. I wish they could make more TV shows like this in 2024.

Good Omens Fanfic Friday (26 Apr 2024)

A Study In Hazel (46K; Rated E)

Human AU. Crowley returns home one evening to find a strangely-dressed man asleep on his sofa. He quickly discovers the man has accidentally traveled through time from 1856 to 2019. Lovely and low-angst.

I went on a binge of reading omegaverse stuff written by ladydragona and SylWritesStuff and have two to recommend this week. It's hard for me to find an omegaverse story I genuinely like (before this, Mark of the Serpent was the only one), but I can tell I'm going to read a lot of these two authors' works.

It's a Nautical Feeling (210K; Rated E)

Omegaverse AU. One part Good Omens. One part omegaverse. One part The Goonies. While raiding a privateer vessel, the pirate captain (and alpha) Crowley is offered an unclaimed omega in exchange for leaving the ship alone. He accepts the offer, worried what would happen to the omega if he refuses.

Aziraphale has spent the better part of his life searching for the treasure of the mad pirate witch, Agnes Nutter, and he's highly offended when Gabriel, the captain of the ship he commissions to find it, sells him off to a pirate captain. It doesn't take him long to realize how much better his life is aboard The Viper with its kind captain.

One thing I really like is how constant their love is; it's not the cause of a lot of angst, though the pirate lord (Lucian Morningstar) that Crowley is forced to work for is. Aziraphale is very strong-willed, while Crowley believes omegas and alphas are equal and has no problem deferring to him. Aziraphale's status on the ship is equal to anyone else's. Great use of S1 characters, especially the Them.

In Vino Veritas (83K; Rated E)

Omegaverse AU. I would LOVE to see more omegaverse stories like this. It's a modern setting, for one, which is more rare for this subgenre. In this world, omegas are very rare, and because they're rare, they have a lot of power. They're like celebrities. They often have more than one alpha lover, and many are raised to be spoiled princes(ses).

Aziraphale Eastgate is a kind, wealthy omega who was once the victim of an attempted kidnapping. His cousins tell him he needs a bodyguard in order to be allowed to leave the manor, and he goes along with the idea, hiring alpha bodyguard Crowley to escort him around.

Aziraphale is a wonderfully complex character. He's charming and flirty with Crowley; friendly and kind with everyone; but he's the victim of his cousins' emotional abuse because he so desperately wants a family to love him, so with them, he's fearful and nervous. You want to hug him so badly and tell him he deserves better. (Fortunately, that's what Crowley is for).

This incarnation Kar is for Contemporary Supernatural/Fantasy/Mythology like verses. You can find the Og/Sci-Fi flavored Kar at @stellevatum.

While she's BPRD based, don’t sweat it if you don’t know the other stuff. If your fandom/verse has a way in, I can finagle her into all sorts of place (she's literally an cosmic horror at heart).

That ‘selective’ part comes into play. I have every right to not follow someone, decline a roleplay, just as you do. Just be polite and respectful.

Crossover/AU/Multiverse/Self Insert friendly. Not your thing, then feel free to not follow.

There will be casual mentions of recreational drug use, more often than not mentions of alcohol than drugs, but will be tagged upon request. Other possible triggers are her fatalistic humor.

Kar is an ancient cosmic horror who was supposed to destroy all reality. Raised by mortals, so she thought she was. But she's also got other forms, which folks may see.

As for appearance, unless you’re really looking you might notice the fangs. And for the most part, assume she’s wearing her signature sunglasses covering her eyes since those rarely are taken off in public.

While not usually brought up, but Kar has attempted to end her life and self-harmed. Nowadays it’s usually just masked with fatalistic humor, recreational drug use, and lots of drinking.

There will be mentions of Nazis particularly of the occult sort, so if that makes you uncomfortable please feel free to step away.

SHIPPING:

Shipping is welcomed and willing to discuss the possibility, but I leave the rest to chemistry and just how we as writers write. Kar is into male muses, and will be polite about turning other people down, unless one doesn’t take the hint.

That being said, don’t ask to ship with me and just…drop off. I believe in mutual enthusiasm. If you're no longer interested, just communicate.

This blog is multiship, meaning each relationship is treated as its own separate place in the multiverse unless discussed and agreed upon.

Kar can be polifidelitous. She’s okay with having multiple partners and those partners having partners if your character is cool with it. But she can be selectively monogamous in your little bubble.

NSFW may be on here, or I might do it over discord. I'm playing it by vibes. As I don't really have any established romantic stuff since rebooting, I can't say with any certainty.
