Callum really just says "Is anyone going to love and admire Rayla?" and then not wait for an answer.

So I got into TDP right before S5 came out, and binged the first four seasons in a week. I was so hooked after season 1, and this show has me in a chokehold now. I wanted to offer my perspective as someone who got into it late, and not from series premiere.
1) Arc 1 is phenomenal. Arc 2 so far is not as bad as the fanbase makes it out to be. It definitely has a different vibe, and some of the humor doesn't hit well, but they kept the integrity of the characters. Callum & Viren's journeys, in particular, have been a treat to watch.
2) I've never been this vested in a ship (Rayllum) since Kataang. I'm 30, and watched A:TLA when it debuted, and loved Kataang since the beginning. It feels weird as a grown ass adult being this worked up over a teenage relationship, but I am ILL over these two.
3) The soundtrack is incredibly underrated, particularly S2. All of the music during Callum's coma montage is just peak.

I FINISHED IT!
I'M GONNA GO BE SAD NOW! AND TERRIFIED! MOSTLY TERRIFIED!
Spoilers:
I feel like this season was one of the scariest, in my opinion it just felt... scary. So many elements now in the story just made it... creepy, and I loved it. My Rayllum heart is satisfied. As is my Jamaya heart. And my heart for Terry x Claudia is... I mean, it's getting there.
I liked this season a lot. There were a lot of scary undertones of the characters and their thoughts. For example, Rayla puts the mission above her own wants. Even after she tells Callum, she's thinking about the mission. And the way she pushes past her fear of water, she goes down to fight and save her friends.
Callum! Calllum! Callum! THIS BOY IS GOING THROUGH IT! THE PAIN! THE DARK MAGIC! THE GUILT! IT'S ALL THERE! HE IS LITERALLY BLAMING HIMSELF FOR RESORTING TO SUCH A SOLUTION TO SAVE RAYLA! TWICE!! HE DID IT TWICE FOR HER!!!NOW IMAGINE CONSIDERING CLAUDIA'S SORROW AND GRIEF THAT WILL PROBABLY TURN TO FURY?! SHE'S GOING TO FIGHT RAYLA AND SHE MIGHT EVEN KILL RAYLA! AND CALLUM WILL PROBABLY USE DARK MAGIC TO SAVE HER IF THAT DOES HAPPEN!!!
Ezran, he needs to be a child. He needs it. Thank you, Corvus and Soren, for aiding that, especially Soren. EZRAN MIGHT DO THINGS HE MIGHT NOT LIKE! GIVE THIS BABY BOY A JELLY TART AND LET HIM BE A CHILD DAMN IT!
BABY SOREN! AAAAAHHHHH, BABY SOREN AND BABY CLAUDIA! THE WAY THE DREAM REPRESENTED THE WAY THE KIDS HAVE CHANGED WITH VIREN USING DARK MAGIC! SOREN IS SCARED AND HE LEFT BECAUSE IT TERRIFED HIM WHAT DARK MAGIC HAS DONE! CLAUDIA IS FOLLOWING IN HIS FOOTSTEPS AND EVEN GOING BEYOND SO FAR THAT VIREN CAN'T CATCH UP!
WHAT MAKES THIS WORSE ABOUT CLAUDIA IS THAT I READ THE GRAPHIC NOVEL TODAY! DID SOREN ALMOST DIE AS A CHILD?! HE WAS ILL AS A CHILD! VIREN'S MENTOR IS GONE AND TRAPPED IN A COIN! IS THAT WHY CLAUDIA AND SOREN'S MOM IS GONE?! BECAUSE SHE SAW WHAT HAPPENED AND RAN FROM IT! WHICH MAKES SOREN LIKE THE MOTHER AND MAKING CLAUDIA FEEL MORE ABANDONED!?
WHAT IS GOING ONNNNN?!?!
...
...
...
...
...
I'm fine...
I'm...
I'm going to go to a corner... yeah... I'm gonna do that...
Alsoooo gonna make a fiiiic.... Rayla is going through after effects of the freezing spell. Aghhhh. You can't tell me her blood through her veins turns cold as ice, and she's just fine with it?! Nu-uh. Gonna traumatize my girl, hold up.

Okay guys I’ve got good news and bad news. Good news: I finally got my hands on a new computer! Hooray! Bad news: My work hours actually tripled so I won’t be able to participate in the Rayllum Birthday Bash as much as I hoped.
On the bright side I can still participate! I’ll only be able to do a few of the prompts and I’ll be lucky if I can do anything more than a sketch, but I’m just glad I’m able to do something for the bash. Anyways, can’t wait to get started!

This is the second part of the last post.
What is your favorite moment in the show? Rhona, and then Omari, and then Paula and then Jack.
Omari: I don’t have a moment but I think like whenever I see and hear Harrow speak I get emotional because I think of myself as a kid and seeing this like honorable, powerful king who happens to look kind of like me, I just think I didn’t really have that often on animated shows so I get...I get emotional. Again, you’re talking to a guy who every time I watch Spider-man into the Spider-Verse I cry while they’re talking like I...It just affects me on a deep level.
Paula: For me it’s an episode and it’s 2x05, when Viren is trying to convince the council to go to war and Queen Aanya is not having it, that whole episode I just love it and Jason was just talking forever and it was great, even being in the room for that episode was amazing. Just love it.
Jack: Ezran ascending to the throne. I just think like a shot of him entering the throne room and taking that on, I think it’s just one of the more well-earned and beautiful, like whoa, him leaving the journey to go back take on that responsibility, I think is just incredible.
Rhona: I think another special moment was just the first time seeing Amaya sign. That was really a special moment, you know, it felt like having black royal family, groundbreaking, and having a character sign, groundbreaking.
Mental illness representation, Callum’s anxiety...oh, okay. What do you guys think of the kind of ever present discussion of people dealing with “are they capable?” Because both Rayla and Callum are very much open and honest with like “am i a failure?” (This was mine!)
Omari: Oh, it's great to see characters that are, you know, lack confidence and struggle with these real things that I'm sure a lot of viewers do as well."
Jack: I'm a person with generalized anxiety disorder, it's what it’s been called to me, and I struggle with anxiety a lot and it's a big thing that I connected to with this character and it does feel like the show explores it in a way that isn't like…. Sometimes it’s in like, sometimes it’s in a character description as just like “anxious” just like “Oh, that’s just like a trait” as opposed to a like... a part of this person and a struggle that they're facing and I think Callum really does read to me as a person with an anxiety disorder and they really like, you know, he is really grappling with it and working through it and the dark magic coma scene that I’ve talked about a bunch because I just love it. I love that, you know, to unlock the person that he needs to be, it's stuff that I do to work on anxiety where it’s like “oh he's gotta calm down and channel his breath and think and focus on just the thing in front of him”, like those things, I think that's beautiful and I love it. Love it.
Was there a point in the story that really surprised you? Like, I did not see that. (I already wrote Paula's answer and Jack's reply, twice because I'm stupid and tumblr hates me)
Jack: I just said it, but truly, Ezran leaving. I think was a real like...It’s just so not in the outline you think of this journey when you look at the beginning of the series. You go like, oh these three kids who are like going off to meet the dragon queen and this is the one who can, this kid can like talk to animals, so he’s going to be there to talk to the dragon queen, and the fact that “no, it makes more sense that he has to go back and do the adult thing" even though he’s an 11 year old. I think that’s a really logical plot decision that is, I think, completely shocking from just a genre perspective of like, you know, this is the show where it’s about kids on an epic quest, the main kid doesn’t leave in the middle of the epic quest to go home and do a job. That’s weird, but I think it just really makes sense and it’s really cool.
Paula: What you said (about Rayllum) it’s kind of funny because I think her..for me, in terms of the relationship with Callum, for Rayla it was like “oh, this annoying guy that I have to take care of and I’ve got to explain everything to him”. Well, that does sound like the start of all my relationships so...I don’t know why I didn’t see it coming.
Omari: For a selfish pov just, you know, Corvus going from tracker to a protector, an ally. It was a great story and we talked about it on the previous one, just spoke of the brilliance of the... just the nuance of the storytelling, constant twists that are really surprising and fun.
Rhona: I feel like I want to use the same moment, just the first time I saw Amaya sign and I think the show approaches so many issues with such respect and it’s not made this big deal of... and I loved also that there wasn’t a translation. I think that it really blew me away to see that and, you know, we mentioned in our panel last night how there are fun little signing easter eggs left in there. I don’t know, I just loved that moment.
Who’s the most likely to break character and laugh during the session?
Paula: Jesse.
Rhona: Oh, he’s not here to defend himself.
Paula: Jesse and Racquel together.
Jack: Yeah, the combo.
Last question, what movie or show would your characters be a fan of? (This was mine too)
Rhona: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Like getting in there, stealing precious artifacts, going on adventures....
Omari: Terminator 2.
Paula: I think Rayla's pretty into sports, if she’s gonna watch a movie might be something like Tomb Raider, something with a girl.
Is there a sports woman movie?
Jack: Hold on, what’s like a hard-edged female sports movie…
Rhona: I, Tonya?
Jack: There’s a Drew Barrymore...roller derby movie? (Whip It) (About Callum) I was trying to think if there’s like an animated thing because he’s so into drawing, so I was trying to think if there was like an animated...Um…
Rhona: The Last Airbender.
Jack: The Last Airbender, yeah. He’s really into The Last Airbender. He has a big connection with boomerangs and he doesn’t understand, I think that’s perfect.
Edit: sorry I forgot to say that I didn't write any questions about through the moon since none of them have read it yet, but Rhona has started a free webinar series called Mistressclass and Omari's been one of the few men that they had on their platform. It's to learn about the industry from mostly women to voice over, to on camera, to commercials, to head shots to agents. They are going to have one about audition nerves and anxiety if you're interested!

okay lets talk about this scene as a whole and me trying my best to explain of what I see or think ill hope to see in the future and sorry if there any bad spelling and grammar and just a reminder this is my personal option
rayla thoughts and how see dealing with many people she loved and cared about is gone: we can see from the first panel Rayla is having a hard time dealing with her emotions and with everything that’s happening all at once and even now callum trying to help make it’s harder for Rayla she still needs time and space and to open up a little bit more but she can’t. her whole life she been told to not show “emotion” and not show “fear” and even now she can’t “let go” or “move on” she needs answers and rightfully so. callum got answers and Rayla doesn’t. yes they can work this out as a couple but even then it’s going to take more then a hug and she needs someone that’ll let her vent and let her emotions come out and not feel scared or feel bad doing so and that’s what callum needs to do to help Rayla just a little, just to let her feel more safe with him that she is already.
callum way with dealing with his emotions and how the needs and much help as Rayla does: callum way with dealing of what happen in the few week or months they meet it’s been one big emotional ride and it won’t end yet. and now this in the second panel callum is hurt because rayla opening up a hole that was closed before. callum has or he thinks has moved on since king harrow death but now Rayla opened it up and it’s hurts more then ever and callum is hurt and i don’t think callum has “moved on” either, even if he think he has. callum really hasn’t and rayla line after speaks facts
rayla:
“keep believing in illusions if that’s makes you feel better”
this line alone says so much bc yes elves and humans has “move on” or rayllum has “move on” but that’s not true it’s going to take a lot of hard work with they relationship and with the humans kingdoms and xadia and yeah the illusions that xadia and the human kingdoms and callum has been keeping to themselves to think “ yeah were move on from the pain” but that not true and never well be true
short thought:
they both need each other to vent too and get the comfort they need. and they need someone who understands and would be there for them
rayla talking about elves and humans: rayla 100% right when see said “ no one has ‘moved on.’ i haven’t , you haven’t, the world hasn’t.” because rayla now knows it takes more then taking a baby dragon home and it’s takes personally action. you have to look at yourself and do better as a person and learn and grow as human/elf
what i hope to see in the future:
rayllum saying sorry and forgiving each other and callum rightfully being mad at rayla bc she said “we’ll do this together” and left on has bday
but also forgiving her and helping her bc she needs all the love and be told “ it okay to show emotions and it’s okay to ask for help there nothing wrong about that”
i’m done it took me two days but i’m happy of how this turn out i hope everyone likes this😊

an essay on why rayllum is a masterpiece part 1
my friends will fucking strangle me if i bore them with another ted talk abt why rayllum is a fucking masterpiece
SO NOW TUMBLR HAS TO DEAL WITH MY SHIT!
note after writing this: also i didn’t mean to fucking make this abt s1 only.
1. their dynamic at the start is FUCKING BEAUTIFUL. i’m talking about the arguing, the NOT-SUBTLE SCENES *coughboatscenecough*, and their friend dynamic before s3 as a whole.
first off, they very clearly start as enemies. callum is a human prince, rayla is an elven assassin. rayla is supposed to help kill the king and ezran, while callum tries to stop her (and succeeds through an ethical debate).
im p sure my second favorite scene in s1is when they meet, because the interaction very quickly establishes how their dynamic is at first. callum expects to see ezran when he looks behind him (with the “you know you can’t sneak up on me” quip), and instead sees rayla. they then have a simple conversation before callum tugs down the curtain and runs away. seems simple right?
well my ADHD ass focuses on the DETAILS. note how rayla seems to be intimidating as she seems to edge closer but doesn’t even run up to callum, just threatens him from afar (which could be her empathy or not wanting to hurt an innocent), and callum is very clearly stalling.
next scene we see with them is when callum, bless his heart, decides to start an ethics debate with the assassin who has a blade at his neck. god fucking damnit, it ultimately saved your life callum but THAT DOESN’T ALWAYS WORK.
rayla is stuck on the idea that her killing prince ezran and the king is vengeance while callum insists that it’s wrong (”why would you hurt someone whose done nothing wrong?” “then it’s a cycle. you hurt me, someone else will get revenge on the elves. it’ll never end” (or something along those lines I NEED TO REWATCH S1 DAMN)) and then he pretends that he is ezran.
HERE’S THE THING. even without callum’s stalling, rayla even stalls for HERSELF. she’s no murderer! and then ezran shows up and then it’s Chase Scene pt 2, they find the egg, let’s move on
let’s skip to after they have the egg, and they set up camp in a little clearing. callum is drawing the primal stone, and we already get some cute-ass banter. “caallum! hey, callum! that’s your name right? callum? clem? or was it camel?” “prima-ball” “primal stone.” and then we have my third-favorite scene, where callum does his first heartfelt speech and rayla calls him “sad prince” and DAMN I WANT THAT NICKNAME TO COME BACK
they then go to the banther lodge, run into amaya, callum makes a dumb mistake of calling rayla bloodthirsty, and they get on the boat.
DAMN THAT BOAT FOR MAKING MY HEART SOFT AS HECK.
yes, the boat scene is indeed my favorite scene of s1. it starts with rayla being seasick and callum says “i’m gonna ask you five questions.”
the softness. the way rayla relaxes after a bit and lets her guard down,,, and this is where i feel that rayla got a littol droplet of feelings for callum because HOW CAN YOU NOT LOVE THAT IDIOT. she of course lets her guard back up after his second question about her parents. but as the season continues, they slowly learn to become friends... KEYWORD. SLOWLY.
*whacks them on the head* STOP ARGUING FOR FIFTEEN MINUTES
but at the end of the season, they are clearly slowly becoming friends.
WHOOPS KINDA MADE THIS WHOLE THING ABT S1. LOOK THEY’RE GOOD
ill post my essay abt s2 later

How did Tiadrin announced that she's pregnant, to you? Did she just burst out with that information or was it more subtile? Eg. My best friend said, that she has a present for me. I opened it, and it was a little book. It's title is: Hurray, You'll become an aunt! I think I've made a face like Ezran, when he found out about Rayllum... like: wait... Whaaaat?! (With happy screaming afterwards) What was your first reaktion like? (Was Ethari present, if not - who knew first?)
Tiadrin wasn’t into big announcements, but she did make an exception of sorts that time. The four of us were dancing in their back yard one moonlit evening and Tiadrin suddenly threw up. I spun to the side to get my toes out of range while holding onto her. We three fussed over her for about four seconds before she shouted, “I’m not ill, you fools, I’m pregnant!”
I gasped way too loudly, Ethari covered his mouth and squeed, and Lain tried to scoop her into a giant hug, caught himself, and gave her a gentle one instead. Then Tiadrin taught us about cravings and made us fetch her a whole bushel of moonberries and a bowl of wasabi for dipping.

You seem to be the person who understands the intricacies of fandom and fandom history. I was once looking through the comments of Rayllum fics on AO3 and one of them actually had someone saying 'if you won't finish this, orphan it so the people who want it to continue can finish it.' The thing was, the author took, like, a three month break, not ten years and had a pretty solid update schedule before that. That seems in super bad taste to me, but I can't articulate why besides 'not your fic'
i am a fandom old (9+ years) in a fandom young’un’s (20) body, which is good because legit fandom young’uns tend to have the worst opinions (aka fandom policing), so thank you.
the same issue that underpins all fandom policing, that i think you’re also finding here, is entitlement. what makes people go “how dare someone ship / make something that i don’t like in their free time?” also makes people go “how dare this person not create content for my consumption in a schedule that works for me?” aka “how dare this person not make something i like?”
which also operates under the misunderstanding that fanfiction authors do or should write for anyone but themselves, inherently. like, trust me, i get it, i’ve read fics that got 200k or 20k in and are incredible and never get updated or finished. it sucks. but i’m grateful i got to read any of it at all, tbh. for free, too. that someone took their time, talent, and hard work to make anything that i remotely enjoyed.
i also think the assumption that somebody else could complete the story the way the author could is bold, particularly after only 3 months. especially because like, things are always going on in people’s lives and in the world, and you never know what. illness? death of a family member? job stuff? mental health? lack of inspiration? the list is endless.
it’s also an entirely different thing when the author is like “hey is anyone interested in picking up where i left off bc i’m choosing and articulating that i wanna leave it” vs someone else telling them that’s a route they should consider because the speaker wants it.
aka i have stories for other fandoms that regularly go through month or year long hiatuses, or are still on one but i know i’d like to get back to it someday (although whether i actually will, we’ll have to wait and see).
but yeah 9/10 issues in fandom come down to entitlement, unfortunately, and trying to dictate what other people should do in ways that aren’t constructive, compassionate, or actually useful, imo.

Payback
Based on all the meta going around about Soren and Rayla having a rad bromance, Callum gaining a ton of upper-body strength from flying everywhere and general Rayllum fluffiness.  So have a fic about Callum returning to the Storm Spire after a year of mage training, and how Rayla and Soren respectively welcome him back. Takes place about 3 years after Season 3, so Callum is just shy of 18, Rayla’s just shy of 19, and Soren is 22.  Enjoy!!
From the peak of the Storm Spire, Rayla scanned the horizon, tensely waiting for something.
“Whatcha looking for?” said a voice behind her, causing her to nearly jump out of her skin. In a flash, she drew her swords and pointed them at the throat of her assailant.
“Whoa, whoa, it’s just me!!” said Soren, holding his hands up defensively and backing away.
Rayla relaxed. “Don’t sneak up on me, Soren, I’m not in the mood.”
“Why? Antsy because your boyyyyyyyyfriend is coming back today?” Soren leaned back with a sly grin.
Soren’s presence on the Storm Spire had initially made the rest of the Dragonguard nervous, but he was there on a diplomatic endeavor: a human Crownguard serving with the Dragonguard. His counterpart, a Sunfire elf named Yavuz, was stationed in Katolis. And after some time, the elves had come to realize that, while not the sharpest sword in the armory, Soren was really good at guarding things, and was pretty determined to prove he was nothing like his father. Plus, even Rayla couldn’t deny that he had his good points, and a strange friendship had blossomed between the two.
Said friendship mostly consisted of trying to out-do each other with increasingly dangerous or ill-considered feats of bravery and strength, but it was friendship nonetheless.Still, just because they were bros now, that didn’t mean Soren got to tease her about Callum.
“Shut it,” she said with a glower, and returned to scanning the horizon. “He’s been gone a long time, I’m allowed to be nervous.”
“It’s been what, a year?” said Soren, sitting down beside her with a clank as he pulled an apple out of some hidden compartment in his armor.
“A year, yeah.” Rayla looked down. She had tried not to miss Callum too much, and hoped that wherever he was - Cloudvale, the Shrieking Shore, Mt. Adra - he pined for her as much as she had pined for him this long year. She’d received letters very regularly, with accounts of his adventures and drawings of what he’d seen, and she sent letters back with updates on Zym, life at the Storm Spire, her own training. But letters and drawings weren’t the same as seeing him; his wide smile, the soft look in those green eyes, the shiver that went down to her toes when he said her name.
Soren bit into the fruit, and continued to speak with his mouth full. “Didn’t know mage training was so intense. Think he learned anything cool?”
“Probably. In his last letter, he said that he and Ibis had been chasing storms, trying to find a big one so he could make a primal stone.”
“Y’know, if you’d have told me three years ago that I’d be hanging out with the Dragon Queen and a bunch of elves, waiting for the step-prince to come flying in because he’s a sky mage and can turn his arms into wings? I’d have thought you were crazy.” Soren paused, thinking. “Actually I probably would have tried to kill you, since you’d have been a Moonshadow Elf in the castle, and since my job was to keep elves OUT of the castle--”
“I get what you mean,” said Rayla, cutting him off. And then, a speck in the distance - no, two specks. She tensed, watching the shapes draw in closer, hopeful but not certain.
“Whoa. Either those are really big birds, or that’s them,” said Soren, standing.
Rayla did not consider herself to be particularly vain or fussy. She had a job to do, which was guarding the spire from threats. Her appearance was low on her priority list (aside from making sure her clan markings weren’t faded and she looked presentable). But now that Callum was approaching, she felt her pulse quickening and suddenly whether or not she looked cute mattered a whole heck of a lot. She fussed with her hair, and tugged at the edges of her uniform.
“Calm down, you look fine,” said Soren, noticing her jitters. He knew he wasn’t the most tactful or observant man out there, but he did have a little sister, and he wasn’t THAT dim. He ignored the pang of sadness at the thought of Claudia, and instead focused on Rayla’s worry. So what if she hadn’t seen Callum in a year? The guy was obnoxiously earnest and a big softie, she had nothing to worry about. And if Callum was a jerk, he’d throw him off the Storm Spire. Assuming Rayla didn’t first.
The shapes drew in closer, and it became apparent that it was two winged humanoids - Ibis and Callum. Rayla waved, excited but restrained, and one of the figures wheeled away from the other, diving lower down, heading for the landing outside the Queen’s chambers.
Soren smirked. “I’m gonna go say hi to Ibis and let the Dragon Queen know they’re back,” he said, heading towards the stairs. “Don’t smooch him too hard!” He nimbly jogged away before Rayla could sock him. She scowled at Soren’s retreating form, but the frown vanished quickly as she looked up.
Callum was drawing closer now, wide brown wings fanning out and tilting upwards as he brought himself in for a landing. His feet had barely touched the stone of the Spire’s pinnacle before Rayla rushed at him, almost tackling him with her embrace.
The mage prince laughed, and it may have been slightly deeper but it was still Callum’s laugh and it had been so long since she’d heard it. Soft feathers wrapped around her (to her delight, he had remembered that she loved his wing hugs), and she snuggled into his chest. “I missed you, you stupid human.”
“I missed you too,” he said warmly, the feathers fading and turning back into arms, before he yelped. “Ah, watch the horns!”
That was when Rayla noticed something was off. Her horn had indeed grazed his nose, and she had her face pressed into his neck, and the chest and arms around her were a lot more solid than she remembered…
She backed up, and her eyes widened. Mage training had had quite the effect on him. To start, he’d hit a growth spurt. They’d been eye-to-eye when he left (her horns giving her a slight advantage on top of that), but now he was a few inches taller than her. But whatever, she’d seen his aunt, and apparently his mother had been tall as well, so she had figured that he’d end up taller than her once they were done with puberty.
What she hadn’t expected was the changes in his physique.Below the waist, he was still fairly scrawny, although it was hard to tell with baggy pants he was wearing. From the waist up, he had gained quite a bit of muscle. His shoulders and chest were considerably broader, and while his arms weren’t the same kind of muscular as Ethari’s or Soren’s (men who spent their days swinging heavy metal objects around), there was lean definition there, similar to Ibis.
Callum beamed at her, and stepped away from her embrace, digging into his bag. “I have something to show you, one sec.” With a flourish, he pulled an object from his satchel, and flipped open an impressively made staff, topped with a small blue primal stone. He posed, staff extended in one arm and the other hand on his hip, his gaze skyward, trying to look heroic and cool. He made a small aspiro rune and blew out the side of his mouth, causing his scarf to flap majestically in the breeze before giving her a grin. Still a major dork, then. An incredibly cut major dork.
Rayla swallowed, and tried to say something intelligent, only managing a flustered “um.”
Callum glanced over at her, his smile fading.“Is… something wrong?”
At his hurt puppy expression, Rayla felt the heat rise in her face. He was so damnably attractive, and so clearly happy to see her after all this time, and here she was, her tongue tied in knots because he’d gotten a little beefier. She stammered a bit, and then resorted to giving his bicep a squeeze.
He looked down at her hand, which trailed over to his chest, and understanding dawned on him. “Oh,” Callum said with a chuckle, “turns out flying everywhere is like doing push-ups for hours.” He smiled slyly, and flexed an arm. “You approve?”
“Uh-huh,” she said, running her finger down his arm, following the line of the runes. She was wondering what he looked like under the red tunic - elven made, since they’d been on the other side of the continent, of course, but still in Katolis red and gold.
Callum tipped her chin up towards him, green meeting lavender, and his mouth quirked into a smile. And Rayla melted in his arms, diving forward and letting her mouth do what she’d spent all the days between dreaming of doing. She could have spent forever in that kiss, freewheeling through the sky that was him, but it wasn’t to be.
Another pair of strong arms wrapped around the two. “This is nice,” said Soren, hugging them both from behind Callum, smirking like the devil himself and leaning on the prince. A few more inches still hadn’t put Callum taller than Soren, much to Callum’s annoyance.
“Hi, Soren,” he said flatly. “Your timing is terrible.”
Soren pulled away, beaming. “Uh, my timing is great, thank you. I was waiting just behind that rock for the right moment!”
“That’s weird,” said Rayla, folding her arms.
“Whatever,” Soren sneered, and then spun Callum around to face him. “Time for a real hug!” He grabbed Callum, and squeezed hard, lifting him off the ground a little in a tight bear hug. Ever since that day before the battle, Soren had gotten it into his head that macho bro hugs was a thing he and Callum did, and a year apart wasn’t going to change that. Callum wheezed, frantically tapping Soren’s arm to let him go.
Finally, he did. “Wow,” said Soren, eyeing Callum up and down. “If I had known all it took to get you to work out was to make it about nerdy magic stuff, I’d have made Claudia give you that primal stone years ago.” He grinned, and dropped to the ground into a plank, and looked up at Callum. “So let’s do this!”
Callum and Rayla exchanged confused glances. “Uh… do what?”
“Push-up contest! I want to see how many you can do now!”
“Soren, I just flew here from Cloudvale. My arms are tired.”
“Oh, so you’re still too puny to do push-ups with your good buddy Soren?” He smirked at Callum, raising an eyebrow. The taunt was obvious bait, which Callum took like a hungry fish. Glaring at Soren, he lowered himself into the ready position. At this, Soren beamed. “Hey Rayla, count us off!”
“Count yourself off,” she said, her voice coming from lower down than expected.
The two boys looked over to see that she had also lowered herself into a ready position, planking effortlessly. “What?” she said at their befuddled looks. “You two really thought I was gonna sit here and let a couple of humans show me up?”
I’ll count,” said Callum with annoyance. He looked at Soren and then Rayla, who both nodded, and with a sigh, he counted. “One… two….”
He stopped looking to see what the others were doing after ten, and after 25, he felt a sudden weight on his back. Specifically, around 200 pounds of armored person, sitting on him. “Soren, why are you sitting on me?”
His arms were shaking now, but with a small note of pride he did consider that he was managing to hold Soren and himself up.
“Well, I was impressed that you got to 25 without breaking a sweat. And then I thought… payback time.” He shifted, bringing his legs up to sit cross-legged on Callum’s back. “I think you were on 26?”
Callum managed 26 and 27, before Soren roped Rayla into participating as well, and Callum collapsed on 28. At that, the competitive tension broke, and the three of them lay in a heap on top of the Storm Spire, laughing.
Later that night, Soren found several dozen moon moths in his bed. Moon moths that someone who could fly had probably flown a little ways west to gather. The note on his pillow said “Payback.”
Well, if Callum wanted to engage in a prank war, then it was on.

Day 3: Modern College AU
Illness took me down for a bit, but I do intend to finish these prompts, even though Rayllum week ends tomorrow.
I see a lot of mistakes now, but oh well.
It seems like normally this AU has Rayla as a jock and, while there's nothing wrong with that and it makes sense, I wanted to go a different route. So this is like. . . A skater girl Rayla? And smitten student Callum.
