Phantom Pipes: Häxan at Regent Street Cinema
I am almost home from my festival jaunts, and it seems the weather has turned chilly since I left home. The nights are drawing in, the candles are flickering… it must be spooky season. Why not kick off your annual creepathon with a screening of a silent classic: Benjamin Christensen’s 1922 demonic drama-documentary Häxan? My excellent friends at Evolution of Horror, who leave no stone in scary…

The Regent Cinema opened in 1921 at the junction of Church Street and Regent Road and served as a cinema up until 1971 before becoming a dedicated bingo hall until around 2006 where it underwent an interior makeover and became a Snooker & Pool hall until around 2012.
In recent years it has been 'reclaimed' and now exists as a cinema once again showing films from yester-year.

any queer bars/clubs you'd recommend in edinburgh? we've not been able to find anything satisfactory unfortunately
Depends on the vibes you're after!
Specifically queer venues:
Planet: never been except after pride one time like 6 years ago, so unable to really review personally, but my pals have given me middling to low reviews of the vibes tbh. The queer rugby team often host events there though
CC Blooms: a club, usually fun tunes but can have a slightly "cishets on stags/hens" crowd occasionally. Would recommend going for their drag shows though, they're always super fun
The Street: good food good drink, also host regular drag shows and club nights and I've loved all the ones I've been to
The Regent: a regular ass pub that is just pretty much exclusively for queer people who want to do a crossword and start weird arguments about board games
Other drag shows/queer events spaces:
Kandy Store at Frankensteins: all seated but Is downstairs so ymmv access wise, usually not super busy which is a tragedy because it fucking rules. They also host a yearly competition for new and upcoming drag artists which is always so special
Queer as Punk at Wee Red Bar or Leith Depot: cool as fuck group that puts on punk gigs and drag shows and spoken word nights and short film screenings, it's never the same twice so I recommend following them on Instagram to see the specific shows they do
Leith Arches: events space that hosts a variety of shows including a regular drag king night and other clubs or performances
Dog House: very fun bar hosting drag bingo or other performances. A little out of the way for me but every time ive been it's been fun!
Paradise Palms: foremost a smashing veggie food and drink place, but also regularly has queer performance nights
I know there's also regular drag shows at Subway, Three Sisters, and Casablanca in grassmarket, but I have not personally been
Fun places that are queer friendly but not explicitly doing events or anything, or aren't bars but worth knowing:
Kafe Kweer: queer-owned cafe that hosts craft fairs and galleries and suchlike
Lighthouse Books: radical leftist bookshop and love of my life
Banshee Labyrinth: spooky pub with cinema room and weekly karaoke
Mortal Kocktail: weird little alt bar full of old arcade machines
Argonaut Books: independent bookshop and community space with book group meetings including im pretty sure a queer themed book club
There's definitely more that I've missed, the queer scene in Edinburgh is so wonderful and vibrant and there's space for everybody if you know where to look!!

Regards, Loki - Chapter 27
Master List
Cora had to go into work that day.  To keep herself occupied, Louisa was baking again, using it to distract herself.  This time, she was making something called spritz cookies.  While the recipe called for them to be long, thin strips, she wanted to see if they could be fashioned into a thumb print type biscuit, using jam for the middle.  It took a couple tries, but she felt the current test run would be successful.
Loki: How are you doing today, my dear?  Well I hope?
Louisa couldn’t help but smile.  Loki had that effect on her more and more these days.
Sigyn: I’m doing alright.  Frigga is at work, but I’m keeping myself otherwise occupied.  How is your day going?
Loki: Not as well as it could be.  Just a long day that I’m ready to be finished with.
Sigyn: I hate those kinds of days.
Loki: What are you up to?
Rather than just tell him, she took a picture of the biscuits that just came out of the oven.
Loki: Those look delicious!  What are they?
Sigyn: It’s a Swedish butter cookie called spritz.  I’m experimenting with different ways to use the dough.  This one has lingonberry jam in the middle.
Loki: They look delectable.
Sigyn: This is the first successful test batch.  They’re supposed to be thin strips and kind of crispy, but I wanted to try something different.
She froze in place when she heard the doorbell ring.  It was the middle of a work day.  Who would be stopping by?  Taking a few strides, she went to the front door and looked through the peephole to see Chad and happily opened the door.
“Aren’t you supposed to be at your coffee shop?”
Chad nodded.  “Yes, but I wanted to pop over and check on you, but holy hell what is that incredible smell?”  He followed his nose to her kitchen, but she smacked his hand before he could steal one before they were cooled.  “Where the hell have you been hiding these, bitch?  Don’t you know sharing is caring?”
She barked out a laugh.  “It’s nothing.  I’m just trying different things to keep myself occupied.”  They could both hear her phone vibrate, letting her know she had another message.
He swiped her phone before she could, and read the incoming message aloud.
Loki: Those look sinfully delicious, darling.  It’s pure torture just looking at a picture of them.
“Bitch, he’s got it bad for you.”
She couldn’t help blushing hard.  She felt the same way about Loki, but it was just a platonic relationship, right?
“And it’s not hard to tell you feel the same way about him.”
She tried to get her phone back.  “He’s just a friend.”
“Uh huh.”
“There’s no way he’d like me like that.  You know the setup.  No strings, nothing.  Just conversation.”
He smiled back knowingly.  “You know, the best relationships start out of friendship, right?”
Rather than argue, she gave him one of the brownies she still had left over.  “Here’s your treat for checking on me.  You can let Brad and Cora know I’m ok.”  They both chuckled.
“I’ll let them know, but I wanted to ask you something.  There’s an old movie playing at Regent Street cinema tonight.  Brad’s being a killjoy and doesn’t want to go.”
She wasn’t sure about being out so late, but Chad wouldn’t let anything happen.  While they hadn’t known each other for super long, he felt like the brother she never had.  “What’s playing?”
“The Shop Around the Corner.  Have you ever seen it?”
She shook her head.  “I’ve seen You’ve Got Mail which was based on it, but I’ve never seen the original.”
He snatched another biscuit.  “You wanna go?”
“I dunno……”
He went over and hugged her from the side.  It’s ok, love.  There usually aren’t very many people there, and I promise, nothing will happen to you.  I’ll even go with you to the ladies room if you need to go.”  They both laughed, and she conceded.  “Yeah, let's do it.”
Chad smiled.  “Great!  It starts at 11.  I’ll come get you at about 10?”
“Okay.”
As he opened the front door, he turned around.  “Oh, and don’t forget to text back loverboy.  I’m sure he’s waiting with bated breath for your answer.”  She tossed a throw pillow at them which he dodged, laughing, as he closed the front door.
Two more trays of the biscuits went into the oven.  She wasn’t sure why she was making so many, only that it continued to bring her both distraction and peace.  Before she did anything else, she picked up her cellphone from the counter, re-reading his last message.
Sigyn: I’m finding they’re pretty good.
She took a bite of one and put it on a plate, taking a picture of the partially eaten sweet, and sending it to him.
Sigyn: Too bad you’re not here to enjoy them.
Loki: You wound me, my lady!
She couldn’t help but laugh.  When the rest of the cookies finished baking, she let them cool off before putting them away in some ziploc bags.  Louisa wanted to save some for Cora, but she also wanted to test a few to see how long the freshness would last, out of pure curiosity.  Plus, she could take some to the movie with Chad that night.
Once everything was bagged up and put away, she decided she should probably clean up the living room.  Cora had been staying over most nights, keeping her company, but they both knew it wasn’t sustainable.  Sometimes Brad and/or Chad would come in the evenings when Cora got caught up at work.  By this point, Brad started calling them the fearsome foursome, making it the name of their group chat.
Loki: What are you up to this evening?
Sigyn: Chad invited me to an old Christmas movie showing at the Regency.
Loki: What movie? If you mind me asking.
Sigyn: Shop Around the Corner
Loki: With Jimmy Stewart, right?
Sigyn: That's the one. I've never seen it before, but Chad thinks I'll like it.
Loki: Let me know if you like it. I saw it once many years ago. .
Sigyn: I’m a fan of the sort of remake.
Loki: Oh?  What movie would that be?
Sigyn: You’ve Got Mail
Loki: My mum loved that movie.  Haven’t seen it myself.
Sigyn: Blasphemy!  I demand you watch it.
Loki: Your wish is my command.
Sigyn: Let me know how you like it?

Why Do We Love...
Jane Asher
I first knew about Jane Asher when I was a teenager. We really loved The Beatles since we were little, and at the time The Spice Girls, the Back Street Boyd and Britney Spears started to be popular among our classmates, me and my sister stuck to The Beatles (Queen, Guns'N'Roses, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith...)
Tumblr media
[Jane and Paul at the 'How I Won the War' premiere, October 1967]
By then, we knew about Linda, Cynthia and Yoko. but one day, at our granny's, she had these magazines about gossip, and there was an article about an upcoming biography about Paul McCartney. In the same article there was this black and white photo of Paul and Jane at How I Won the War film premiere and said "At 25, Paul had a romance with stage actress, red-haired Jane Asher".
RED HAIRED STAGE ACTRESS you said?
Tumblr media
[Jane in 1965]
I LOVED stage and I LOVED red hair!! (I still do!!!). So I memorised her name and as soon we got internet at home we started googling her and found out LOTS OF AMAZING websites about what was called "the Beatlegirls". My sis back then still loved Cynthia, as John was her favourite Beatle, but soon changed onto Pattie.
And Jane, of course, was not only a stage actress, but also a film and TV actress, a model, a cook, an author, an activist... And her romance to Paul was not only when he was 25, but for five years!
Tumblr media
[1964 - Jane in Regent's Park]
We started saving pictures of Jane, Pattie, Cynthia and Maureen, guessing the years pretty well! We were hesitant to join yahoo groups because you needed a yahoo email, but in the end we did, and we found a great collection of photos and met fans alike!
Tumblr media
[Jane in 1967, for the Ladies Home Journal]
And, of course, like the other muses we had, we started to build websites, then MySpace (remember that?!), facebook, here on tumblr... Always trying to find the best picture and the most accurate information about them.
What I really love about Jane is that now I don't "care" about Paul anymore, now it's her. and she's still acting! Maybe I knew her as a "Beatlegirl" but she is far more than that, she is not that anymore (to me). Like all the muses, she is her own person, and she defines herself as a "science groupie", isn't that fabulous?
Tumblr media
[Jane in 1970, in "The Philanthropist" play]
Finally, after watching some of her films, collecting many of her magazines and photos, watching "An American In Paris" play that was filmed for cinemas, we're going to see her live in a theatre production in London this summer. We are very excited!
Tumblr media
[Jane in the play "Moon Tiger" in 2014]
Today, for her 77th birthday, we wanted to share with all of you, dear followers, how we knew about Jane and what made us love her.
Here we share:

Why you have to watch Slow Horses, the spy thriller starring Gary Oldman
Tumblr media
If you are looking for a new show to binge-watch, look no further than Slow Horses, the spy thriller based on the novels by Mick Herron. The series follows a group of disgraced MI5 agents who are banished to Slough House, a dumping ground for the failures of the intelligence service. There, they are led by Jackson Lamb, a rude, slovenly, and brilliant spymaster played by Gary Oldman. Slow Horses is not your typical spy drama. It is gritty, dark, and full of twists and turns. It also has a lot of humor, thanks to the witty dialogue and the quirky characters. The show explores the themes of loyalty, betrayal, and redemption, as the slow horses try to prove themselves in a world of espionage and politics. The cast is superb, with Gary Oldman delivering a masterful performance as Lamb, who is both ruthless and protective of his team. Kristin Scott Thomas plays Diana Taverner, the ambitious and ruthless deputy director of MI5, who is Lamb’s nemesis. The slow horses are played by a talented ensemble of actors, including Jack Lowden, Rosalind Eleazar, Christopher Chung, Aimee-Ffion Edwards, and Kadiff Kirwan. The slow horses are played by a talented ensemble of actors, including Jack Lowden, Rosalind Eleazar, Christopher Chung, Aimee-Ffion Edwards, and Kadiff Kirwan. The show has received critical acclaim and has been nominated for several awards, including five BAFTA Awards. It has also been renewed for a third and fourth season, so you can expect more thrilling adventures from the slow horses. The first two seasons are available to watch on Apple TV+, and the third season will premiere on November 29, 20234. If you are a fan of spy thrillers, or just good drama, you should definitely check out Slow Horses. It is a show that will keep you hooked, entertained, and surprised. Trust me, you won’t regret it.

Eros Cinema Club
78 London Road, Liverpool, L3 5NF
Located on London Road in the city centre, a few yards east from the now demolished Odeon (ex Paramount). The 580-seat Electra Palace Theatre was opened on 30th May 1911. It was designed by architectural firm J.L. Langford & Slater. In the early-1920’s it was re-named London Road Picture House and was soon renamed Alhambra Cinema.
In 1932 it was taken over by the Regent Enterprises Ltd. chain and was re-modelled to the plans of architectural firm Gray & Evans who added a 290-seat balcony to increase the seating capacity to 820. It re-opened as the King’s Picture House on 13th October 1932 with George Arlis in “The Silent Voice”. It was equipped with a British Talking Pictures(BTP) sound system. In March 1928 it was taken over by the Southan Morris chain of S.M. Super Cinemas. In October 1954 they were taken over by the Newcastle based Essoldo chain. It was equipped with CinemaScope and the first film to be screened in that process was Spencer Tracy in “Broken Lance”. The Essoldo chain closed the King’s Picture House on 1st April 1972 with John Wayne in “Chisum” & Efrem Zimbalist Jr. in “Cosa Nostra, Arch Enemy of the FBI”.
On 4th April 1972 it re-opened as the Curzon Cinema Club, showing uncensored sex films. The Tatler Cinema Club moved from its Church Street location into this cinema and it was re-named Tatler Cinema Club from 22nd December 1972 until 18th November 1979, still screening adult movies. Tatler Cinema Clubs were operated by the London based Classic Cinemas chain and this Tatler was re-named Classic Cinema and it played double bills of (X) Certificate films until 24th August 1980. The seating capacity had been reduced to 327. It then went back to uncensored sex films and was re-named Eros Cinema Club which operated until August 1981 when it was closed down by Liverpool City Council who objected to the type of films being screened. The building stood derelict for several years until it was eventually demolished and retail has now been built on the site.
