Post Office Packet ship Hanover

The Hanover was found in August 1994 by Mr Colin Martin, a former coal miner, when he had been searching for it for seven years. She was located in the so-called Hanover Gove near Perranporth, Cornwall.

She was a packet ship and on 28 October 1763 on her way to Lisbon. And even though the seven year war was over, she was well armed with her 14 guns and also had quite a large crew of 27 men. When she started her voyage, she was carrying mail, parcels, a lot of cash and another 33 passengers, bringing the total number of 60 people sailing from Falmouth to Lisbon. On 8 December, however, she ran into such a strong storm near Cornwall. The storm grew into a hurricane, however, which doomed several ships that day. At some point that night, the Hanover struck at the mouth of a cove isolated by the 90m cliffs between St Agnes and Perranporth, just west of Cligga Head at a place now known as Hanover Cove.

The losses were great, only three survived, while all the others went down with the ship. As early as 1765, a salvage crew began to be assembled to recover the money and other items. As a result, the wreck site was no longer fully intact when the wreck was found.

Ship

The ship itself was a two-masted brigantine, as the Lloyd’s register said and the wreck remains could confirm. This collection consisted of 31 planks, 1 stringer and 21 frames.

Finds 

A single 2.2m (7'4") long old Admiralty Longshank anchor was found on site, its weight is around 150kg. Some fragments of the ship's interior were also recovered.

These included nails, door frame pieces. Rope fragments etc. The ship's bell, made of copper, bore the name of the ship that finally identified the wreck.

Of all the guns examined,only one seems to belongs to Hanover's own armament. It is a 4- or 6-pounder gun with a calibre of 80mm - 88mm (3¼- 3½ inches) and a length of 1.64m (66 inches), totalling 1.82 (72 ½inches). There is a suspicion that the other 50 guns were collected from other wrecks in the vicinity for later salvage. However, it has not been confirmed whether this is really the case. It seems more to be the case that most of the old and mostly damaged guns were cargo.This was in addition to several shots in the form of Grape, Round and Bar shots. Some guns still had wadding and tompion in them that could be recovered.

Other finds included rings, bones, both animal and human (over 100 were be found and reburied) . Pewter, pottery, small arms and a lead plate that weighed 2820g, which is 99.472 ounces.

Conclusion

Beyond the information presented here, history has left little about the Hanover. The site did, however, reveal several large rocks lying around the wrakc, suggesting that it probably hit them before being pressed against the cliffs. Presumably many of the people on board were killed, as the bone remains suggest. Many of them also drowned. Further statements could not be made due to the disturbed findings.

However, it is possible to determine why she was so armed. At that time, the Post Office had to constantly reckon with they ships falling victim to a French privateer. Even though the war had been over for months when the Hanover sank, the danger still existed and the ships were therefore sufficiently armed.  All in all, she is an interesting wreck, even if not everything is in its original place and much has been lost.

Yesterday I met two very good dogs (names Rhyna and Sai). The girl is a simple pooch, and the boy is border collie puppy. They were really nice and let me pet them and play ball and other great stuff.
