Theory on how Barbara died and Rick's disappearance. Based partially on/inspired by this post:
https://www.tumblr.com/dilfgmancoolatta/696764411466121216/thinking-abt-what-if-barbara-wasnt-violently?source=share
Okay.
So I saw this post and it sparked this theory of mine.
You see, I never really bought that Rick was responsible for Barbara's death given the fact he was on crutches at the time.
Not to mention the comic is not very reliable (since Edith signed off on it and might not have really liked Rick much, in my opinion).
So.. here's the theory:
They didn't have cellphones back then and Rick probably didn't walk to Barb's. His parents either drove him there or Barb did.
So if she kicked him out and didn't let him call home, he probably decided to suck it up (cause toxic masculinity) and walk home.
Only...
Barbara lives near the ocean. On uneven land. Surrounded by forest. And wild animals.
And it was night.
Rick probably got lost.
And it was Halloween.
It was probably cold.
So either he succumbed to the elements or got attacked by an animal.
Or maybe he went to seek shelter in a cave or went to chill by the ocean. Waiting for his parents to pick him up (if they had drove him) or for Barbara to cool off. Only to fall asleep and get pulled in by the tide.
Hence him disappearing that night.
(My friend pointed out that his crutch was found by the water).
I hear you say... How did Barbara die?
Well. They focus on the skates.
So I'm thinking one of the boys (Walter or the twins or all three) were playing with Barbara's skates before she got home and since the place was cluttered, she probably didn't see them and slipped. Tripping over the railing. Breaking it and falling to her death.
And of course, Walter would be messed up whether he was playing with the skates or not (suggested in the link) because he just saw his older sister die.
And well.
Edie might have blamed Rick for Barbara's death if he disappeared or just for not stopping it since he was there earlier.
Also Walter would be even more messed up because of how strongly his mom believed in the curse after the death of his uncle and grandparents and both his sisters.
And as more deaths started to happen, it'd probably cause a lot of stress. Especially with nobody getting help for him.
I don't know how much of this disjointed mess makes sense but I hope it does make a little sense.
Ooh, this is interesting!
I've never been of the opinion that Rick killed Barbara either, for starters. My guess was the serial killer or maybe some crazed fan(s?) mad that she wasn't able to make her appearance at the convention. I'll need more time to sit on this new theory but I do think it's worth considering
I do wonder though, if we assume that was true, why does he blame the monster for Calvin's death? He arguably has the most cut and dry of Walter's siblings (that he's aware of anyway, him not mentioning Sam makes me think he might not know he died which is :(( but anyway), and while I guess it could be the guilt mentioned I have to imagine that at the very least Sam would try to clear that up? Maybe he did and Walter just didn't believe him, though. It's hard to say. That's something that's bothered me long before I got this ask tbf
As far as the Rick part, yeah him drowning somewhere does make sense. Now that you mention it I wouldn't be surprised if he tripped around that river and cracked his head there.
(Happy birth/deathday queen. RIP Barbara)

Random question but I just realized/remembered that Calvin and Sam were YOUNGER than Barbara.
Yet I don't remember them being babysat by her the night she died so where do you think they were?
Also I was wondering if I'm the only one who thinks Rick might not have killed Barbara?
Cause it COULD be possible that the serial killer/deranged fan part of the comic could have been real. Meaning that that could be why Rick disappeared.
Anywho sorry for the out of the blue question/rant. I just didn't know who else to ask.
(Sorry for the late reply @hannahhook7744, it's been kind of a Weird Hectic Weekend for me)
The thing about Barbara's Death Sequence is that it's really the most 'distant' one we've had. Most other Finches have records written by themselves just before their deaths or written by someone close to them just after their deaths. Barbara got a fictionlized comic book written by strangers for strangers that came out a full year after her death.
Sure, it seems like the Finch family collaborated on the story (since they've got the music box in there), but it's still pretty different from Molly's diary or Lewis' therapy notes. Espacially as a lot of little details in Barbara's room seem to contradict the story. So it's probable that Sam and Calvin were also being babysat by Barbara that night, but as they didn't figure into the narrative the comic-writers were telling they just casually dropped them from the narrative or merged all three younger brothers into Walter's role.
Or maybe they were out having a sleepover with friends or a boyscout camping trip or something but the comic didn't mention it, cause, again, it didn't factor into it's story. This comic was obviously not a serious documentation of Barbara's death, it's a fictional horror story targeted at people with just a casual understanding of the Finch Family outside of Barbara - if at that. So if that comic dedicated a whole narration box to "and also Barbara had two other little brothers but they were off at camp and had nothhing to do with this story" that would just seem Weird to the in-universe readers of 'Dreadful Stories'. Even if it might be useful to us, the REAL audience trying to piece together the timeline of the Finch family.
(Also I do suspect that at some point of WRoEF development Calvin was supposed to die before Barbara and then their timelines ended up being Switched so the Weirdness here might be a remnant of that)
As for the matter of Rick. I think the reason why he's considered the Prime Suspect of Barbara's death within the fandom is due to the Law of Conservation of Detail. You know, like, Details in stories come up because they're important to the story in same way. And yeah, 'What Remains of Edith Finch' is not exactly a traditional narrative and not every detail here has to "further the plot" - but even the most unimportant little details in WroEF still serve to add flavor to the characters, atmosphere and the themes. Which are things that are important to the story.
So why bring up the fact that Barbara had a boyfriend and even give him a name and a face? (which is very rare for anyone outside of the Finch Family in this game) Why doesn't Barbara just die alone in the house with just Walter? Rick has to be Important in some way if the game went to all this effort to create and establish his existence to us, right?
Plus, there's the thematic role of 'Dreadful Stories' within the narrative. Personally, I can't see the idea of there really being a serial killer or a real-life crazed fan that inspired the 'monsters' at the end of the comic. Because my read of 'Dreadful Stories' is that it's made to be so ridiculous and sensational- with both a serial killer AND monsters out to get Barbara - to showcase a little taste of the wild and weird stories being told about Barbara's death. And to put the first subtle little wrinkle in the poetic idea that the Finches deaths always match their lives - Edie had to choose this silly little comic to deliberatly turn Barbara's death into something horror themed. And if she chose something a little closer to reality, it would've turned out to be much different.
So what is the mundane Not-Thematic-Enough-For-Edie's-Tastes way for Barbara to get murdered? I can see why for a lot of people, the 'obvious answer' was 'got killed in an argument with her boyfriend'. Since, again, we need to have a reason why he exists in the first place.
...Although that's actually not my favorite theory lol
I think Barbara's death was even more mundane than that. One of the few details about Barbara's death we can confirm are based on reality is the moment where she pushes the killer off the railing.
Tumblr media
In the current-day Finch House this little piece of railing IS noticeably broken.
Tumblr media
So someone did absolutely fall off the second floor of the Finch House at some point.
So what I think happened is that Rick and Barbara did have some sort of a lover's tiff that night, then Barbara slipped on these rollerskates the Hookman slipped on in the comic.
Tumblr media
In a panic she tried to grab on to something and only managed to catch one of Rick's crutches. (The important thing here is that Barbara is ALWAYS memorialized holding that crutch. Even in pieces that were made prior to the comic's printing, like her portrait)
Tumblr media
So that part of her story has to be true in some way.
Barbara's death was just yet another Patented Tragic Finch Accident, but suspicions kept falling on Rick from the General Public and the media, and so he had to go into hiding. Meanwhile the Finch Family, or at least Edie, kept promoting the most Bonkers version of her story they could find.

some christmassy wroef thoughts
Lewis lifting Edith up so she can put the star on the tree.
Dawn being an excellent gift giver.
Sam trying to organize his kids to take a family picture. And getting really frustrated lmao
Sam and Kay took baby (like 3 year old) Gus to see a mall Santa once and he bit Santa.
When Sam would come home for Christmas, he would always come down to visit Walter and give him a gift like a book or something.
Milton liked to wrap gifts in white paper and draw on it with markers to make his own pattern.
Calvin and Sam usually got something from their parents that they were supposed to share. Barbara would get a different one for each of them.
Walter tended to make nice little cards and things because he hardly ever had money to buy stuff.
Lewis would always get presents for the family pets.
Edie would always get art supplies for Milton, she wanted to encourage his interest in painting.
Sven gave Edie's first pet bird to her as a Christmas present.
Rick once stuck a bow on his shirt and said to Barbara, "I am the gift!" Barbara was not amused.
Molly always tried to catch Santa coming into the house. She also always left carrots and peppermints out for the reindeer.
Barbara loved to make and decorate cookies. Walter liked to help her. Calvin liked to steal them and eat them.
Sven's kids often made gingerbread houses, but hardly would they ever listen to his building advice. Because obviously they know more about structure than their father, who literally built the entire house that they live in.
Dawn really didn't try that hard to make her children believe in Santa, so it rather annoyed her when Edie would perpetuate the myth.
When someone died close to Christmas (Molly, Gregory, etc) the family would place their would-be Christmas gifts on their shrine.
Many of Walter's trains were a gift from Sven.

Some Lewis Finch headcanons because he’s a good boi
- Out of the three siblings, he’s the only one who speaks Indian.
- After his dad died, he became more quiet and depressed. He believed that it was his fault that he died, because before Sanjay went to the relief effort site, Lewis told him to stay safe and come back alive, and Lewis believes that he jinxed it.
- Dyed the tips of his hair blonde. that’s why in the game we see him with blond hair, even though in the photos around the house he has brown hair.
- Has a sarcastic humor.
-Pansexual boy.
- Watched “My friend bigfoot” (You know, Barbara’s movie) a few times with his father, and every time they watched it, they criticized it. A lot.
- Has Coulrophobia (fear of clowns), Agrophobia (fear of open or crowded places), Atychiphobia (Fear of failure)  and Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia (fear of really long words)
- Has a pile of manga books under his bed.
- Has also written a diary where he talks about his family’s history.
His opinions on his dead family members at that time are:
Molly- “Welp, that explains why mom named our cat Molly.”
Odin- “Remember kids- If your family is cursed, don’t build a boathouse.”
Calvin- “He actually went all the way around. If he was still alive, he would’ve gotten a prize for that.”
Barbara- “Awww man. Dad and I used to watch her movie.”
Rick- “A**hole.”
(Walter wasn’t dead yet)
Sam- “Mom saw her father died and never told us about it. But hey, I guess that explains why she’s vegetarian now.”
Gregory- “A BABY died in this house. He could see the world, grow up, be our cool uncle, but NOOOOO. He just had to be left in the bathtub without anyone noticing.”
Gus- “Uncle Gus sounds like a cool guy. I wish I could’ve met him.”
Sanjay- “Dad... I could talk about him for hours. The greatest guy on earth, the best father in the universe... God, I miss him.”
Milton- “I couldn’t get over dad’s death and Milton disappeared. I think it was my fault. I should’ve watched him. I think he might be dead, like the rest of the family, but mom is too naive and hopeful. I just hope I wouldn’t lose Edith too.”

Silly hc of the day: In the real story Rick and Barbara hid Walter under the bed because they realized there was someone in the house and they were cornered on the second floor, so they decided to go down and fight/distract the serial killer to protect Walter and they ended up being taken away forever, leaving Walter hidden without knowing what happened :3

Well, time for What Remains of Edith Finch headcanons !!
・——————————・——————————・
When Calvin and Sam would get into fights and arguments Calvin would go into Barabras room while Sam would go someplace alone.
Calvin knew how to express his emotions, he'd cry, and talk to people about them, he was good with his emotions and would always express them a lot.
Sam didn't, he'd hide them, cover them up until he'd cry his eyes out and pull at his hair when he's alone. He always thought that he couldn't show them, that he had to be strong.
Sam would sometimes get into fights with his mom, they all ended badly.
Walter loves to hear stories about Molly, he'd ask Sven about what she was like, he always wanted to meet her.
Calvin once bit into a pumpkin while carving it, he lost a tooth, Sam thought it was a coolest thing ever, Walter was just concerned along with Sven, Edie didn't have much of a reaction, while Barabra was disgusted.
Gus would always make Dawn help him dye his hair, the first time they did they got red hair dye like everywhere, it looked like someone was murdered. All over the bathtub, Dawn's hands, some on her face, Gus had some on his head, face, and neck. Sam was flabbergasted.
Milton would draw the past family members a lot, he'd usually show his mom, whenever he'd draw Sam his mom would hold back tears.
Lewis is bi, he was afraid of coming out to anyone, but one day he came out to Edith and she was like " that's cool, are you trying to change the subject because I kicked your butt 5 times in this game?"
Gus knew he was different from others, after he (Dawn) dyed his hair, he'd paint his nails, Dawn would paint the left side. He'd dress differently and so on. Now that doesn't mean anything but he thought it did, he thought it meant something. Like he was trying to show himself. Sam would try not to flip out, he knew why Gus was doing all that, but he TRIED to ignore it and tell himself it was just a phase.
Sam is definitely FAR FAR FARRRR in the closet, he hated feeling like he wasn't normal, sometimes guys who were in the military with him would catch his eyes, and he'd immediately tell himself it wasn't right. There would be times when he was younger and would talk about girls to his brother and then it would lead into talking about guys, Calvin would be like in his mind ' damn my twin like men and women. Good for him. '
Barabra was almost like Sam, she of course liked guys, she was dating Rick, even if it was kinda just like him fanboying 24/7 and always being like 'child star blah blah'. She did love him, but, she always knew she was a bit different. Girls would catch her eye, she'd sometimes stare at a pretty girl for too long. She never told anyone at all.
Lewis is a sweetheart, a lovely guy, he always wanted a partner, to feel that kind of love, except he'd never know how to talk to anyone. He tried to talk to a girl once when he took Milton and Edith to the park, it was so bad they just left, Milton was laughing his ass off while Edith was confused.
When Barabra was born Molly was so excited, she helped her mom with everything, she'd play dress up, and much more. Molly was an amazing older sister.
EDIE AND SVEN ARE HIGH SCHOOL SWEETHEARTS
Sometimes Barbara would help her brothers with school work, Sam with math and Calvin with English, a lot of the time Walter didn't need help. Sometimes Walter would say he needed up just so he could hang out with Barabra.
Sam and Calvin are so so so nosy, they hear drama, fighting, or anything they'd listen to. Walter tells them they need to stay out of stuff but they never listened to him.
When Gregory was born, a few hours later Gus looked at his tired mother and father and asked " Can we dye his hair blue?" they didn't respond, Dawn just looked at Gregory and shook her head like a disappointed mom.
Dawn and Gus would sometimes look at Gregory play or something and be like "yooo.. We used to be just like him."
Sam would look at Gregory and sometimes he'd see Calvin, one time he started crying, Gregory was just a baby so he didn't know what to do, he put his little hands on Sam's face which made him cry some more. It ended up in him hugging Gregory and a few hours later they both fell asleep. Dawn took his camera and took a picture of it.
When Odin wanted to move his house across his sea Sven and Edie were like “ haha ur funny” but when they were actually doing it they were like “damn…"
Sam LOVED LOVED taking pictures, a lot of them were just stupid memories, he has a picture of Calvin moments before Calvin broke his leg, the hair dye incident, Barabra coming home from work looking tired, and much more
Barabra hated how her mother would always remind her that she could become a star again, it got tiring.
When Sanjay died Dawn felt lost, she thought maybe this was how Edie felt when Sven died.
Kay and Sam used to have a loving relationship, but after a while it went down hill, fast.
Sam had anger issues, PTSD, trauma, and stuff like that, especially after being in the military.
Edith always looked up to Lewis, she was his biggest fan, she once drew a really bad picture of him and her together when she was little that said "bset freinds!" misspelled and everything. Lewis kept it.
Sven surprisingly knew how to do and cut hair, he'd cut his kids hair from time to time or when they wanted it cut. Saved money.
When Walter lived underground Sam would visit him from time to time, try to make him come back up, he never would. Sam would say "now you're acting just like Calvin and I when you'd tell us to not me so nosy." Walter would just roll his eyes.
I'd like to think Christopher sees ghosts, just for the fun of it. Even though his mother is dead she's always with him, he gets to talk to his family members who died, it's scary yet nice.
Milton would sometimes annoy Lewis just because he could, there was one time Lewis kicked him out of his room but let him back in minutes later because he felt bad.

I remembered one time in 2022 that me and a few other people were discussing on discord ab how people who played wroef (streamers or not) basically demonized Rick a lot damn
I doubt this guy did anything with a broken leg, we forgot he was also a teenager along with Barbara 🫡

Honestly, I'm pretty sure that Rick isn't the one who killed Barbara. After all, he has a broken leg, Barbara took one of his crutches and the other one was found near the house when he dissapeared. If he was the killer, he wouldn't be able to be far from the crime scene, not to mention without his crutches. I think the hook guy's squad killed him, and just like they left Barbara's ear, they left his crutch.
RIGHT?! How does a kid with a busted leg move fast enough to avoid cops forever? And we know that part is true because Walter kept the crutch Barbara used in her story.Also... Rick looks like he would topple over if you sneezed just a little too hard in his direction. I know he's supposed to be a jock and all but. Someone get that kid some Anchor Arms (tm)-Mod Edith

Hi, mod Edith! Welcome to the blog! Do you have any headcanons about "What if they were still alive" AU for Sanjay, Gus, Gregory, Barbara and Rick?
Hi there! And thanks! I’m happy to be here!
I’m gonna separate these by character so it looks a little nicer.
Sanjay: Dawn moved her family from India after Sanjay died, so if he didn’t it’s highly likely that they would still be in India. I also think Lewis would happier and healthier mentally because I feel like he was closer to his dad than his mom. Edith and Milton would be more in touch with their Indian roots, which would be interesting! And of course Dawn would be happy that she has her whole family.
Gus: I can imagine two scenarios for Gus
1.He becomes a happy well adjusted adult. He keeps his punk aesthetic and tastes but he no longer lets his bitterness consume him the way he did as a child. He ends up being the cool uncle that gets his nephews and niece into trouble (but not too serious trouble) and the one they go to when they have a problem they’re too scared to tell their mom about.
2. He stays the way he is. He stays angry at the world and it ruins him. Probably does hard drugs and frequently breaks the law and will still end up in an early grave, curse or no.
Gregory: I like to think that Gregory remains a ball of sunshine long into adulthood. But depending on how things go, it could just be a front. It’s possible in a family where all the other deaths still occur he’d adopt this act to try and keep the family spirit up. Or he could find the same morbid curiosity  and comfort in it that his grandma does.
Barbara: I love Barbara, she’s my fave Finch girl and second fave Finch period, but if the comic is any indication, I don’t think she would ever recapture the magic that she had as a child actress. If she wants to be successful, she would have to focus on reinventing herself. Stop clinging to the cute little girl with curls for days and a scream heard around the world. Start broadening her horizons and try new roles.
I don’t think it would work out still, but what’s more important to me is her being happy with herself, no matter what. In the event she doesn’t become a star again, I can see her being one of those super extra drama teachers. You know the ones I’m talking about.
Rick:  I don’t have any super in depth headcanons about Rick because I don’t like Rick at all lol. I think probably he would go on to have a normal, unremarkable life. Maybe as a coach. Maybe at the same school Barbara (who at this point has realized deserves WAY better than him) teaches. He tries to win her back but it never works.
It’s fun to to think about for sure~
-Mod Edith
