Bruce: said he preferred Oppenheimer. (He secretly shed a tear during the scene when Barbie talks to Ruth)

Alfred: politely said it was good but his favorite movie is still saving private Ryan

Dick: bawled in the theater. I’m just Ken is his anthem

Jason: loved it he always treated women well but now he treats them like goddesses

Tim: oddly he sympathizes a lot with the CEO of Mattel

Damian: said he didn’t like it, wasn’t lying

Steph: giggled and cried and when she got home watched it 10 more times

The lines in “I’m Just Ken” that strike me the most are

“ I wanna know what it’s like to love To feel the real thing Is it a crime? Am I not hot when I'm in my feelings?”

which is reminicent to me of another section of trans man Thomas Page McBee’s book, “Amateur”, in which he discusses how attempting to date as a kind and gentle man (knowing the pain and danger women go through, because he was raised to be wary of it himself), and getting rejected a lot and being confused. A female friend later told him “It’s not sexy” because his cautiousness with women came across as not confident enough.

“ What will it take for her to see the man behind the tan and fight for me? “

Honestly, up until I looked up the lyrics, I thought he was saying “behind the Ten” (like how he says he’d be a 10 anywhere else}. I read this as “When will she stop seeing me as Perfect and start seeing me as A Person?”

Putting it together in my mind: “I wanna know what it’s like to love, to feel the REAL thing. . . What will it take for [a woman who loves me] to FIGHT FOR ME?”

And man. . . I know there’s a lot of distracting stuff going on in that scene, but that really hits me.

That part of men’s relationships, that under patriarchy, are expected to always be fighting and isolated, to not feel supported.

That also reminded me of brilliant shame researcher, Brené Brown’s anecdote about a man who came up to her after one of her talks and expressed that it was very convenient of her to only speak on shame in relation to it’s negative affects on women’s lives.

He told her, “I like what you had to say…but my wife and daughters? They’d rather see me die on top of my white horse than watch me fall off. You say you want us to be vulnerable and real, but c’mon. You can’t stand it. It makes you sick to see us like that.”
