Hilda fans are simply incredible!!

A Hilda fan here in Toronto may have just made one of the largest and most expensive pieces of fanart there ever has been for not just this show...but for any recent cartoon! averagecessnapilot on the Hilda server took a Piper PA-38 and flew it from Toronto Billy Bishop airport to near Lake Scugog and drew a giant Woff with the flightpath! It's over 20 Km long (or 12.4 Freedom miles for anyone in Big Mac land)! I was in downtown for a class but had I known this was gonna happen, I'd probably have popped by the lakeshore to watch homie here take off to draw a giant ass Woff, lmao!!

This makes me so happy as both a Hilda fan and a long time avgeek!

Seriously, if this doesn't convince you to go watch Hilda, IDK what will!

This is important as it may have given Steve Smith the idea to create Dalton's character and place him in the show. And because of the closeness to Port Carling and the surrounding area, it would be reasonably geographically accurate in regards to the show as well. It is also the stretch traveled by the cast and crew of the show to the many location shoots in the Muskokas. 11 on this stretch and this has all been apart of GTA culture since the 1940's. There are numerous antique stores along the side of Hwy. It is the route traveled by many cottagers, hikers and vacationers from the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) up to Algonquin park, Northern Ontario and the Muskokas. First off, this stretch is a very old stretch of highway and very unique in Ontario (partly in that despite being partly a 4 lane divided freeway style with controlled access, many businesses and homes are directly along the route with direct highway access similar to a standard county road or secondary highway - which is where the location of the store used on the show appeared to be). This would make sense for several reasons. However it is unconfirmed that it was shot at a real antique shop on Ontario Hwy. The actual store used for the filming of these segments is unknown. The front lawn is littered with items in varying states of decay and resembles many rural Ontario antique shops. The store is made up of a small house with a garage type building used to store items. Red frequently would also open with "we're out here on the main highway at Dalton's Everything Store." This would put Dalton's store just outside of the town of Possum Lake, probably in between town and the lodge itself. These segments would start off with a shot of the property which was usually Dalton's buildings surrounded by junk with a rusty "antiques" sign out front. Dalton, being a very close friend of Red, would often have him come over to shoot various segments. He then suggests Parry Sound is close by to the lodge and area which places the lodge within the Port Carling area and further provides proof of Port Carling as the setting of Possum Lake.ĭalton's everything store became a major part of the show starting in the 4th season. As such this could be a play on Steve's humour in also calling the lodge "Chapter 11".Ĭharlie Farquharson in Episode 246 "You've got oil" from 2003 is mentioned to be from Parry Sound and at a lodge meeting suggests that he came to the lodge because he wanted to come see where the smell is coming from. Another belief rests with many fans who have messaged in to mention that "Chapter 11" in the United States also means bankruptcy. One belief is that the 11 is derived from Ontario Highway 11 which is the closest major Highway to Port Carling as Hwy 400 did not extend up near Parry Sound back in 1990 like it currently does today, making Hwy 11 the main express route in the area. This seems like an odd number for a lodge to be named after, as you would assume they would call themselves chapter 1 or were the eleventh chapter to join (There is no mention of other chapters outside of Season 3's Possum Olympics). The Possum Lake chapter is known as chapter 11. Lastly even the Possum Lodge Crest helps give us some answers. Lake Scugog of course is about 2 hours east of Port Carling, making it a reasonable fishing destination for Red and helping to further confirm the location of the real life Possum Lake area. What also helps to confirm this theory is that Red mentions in a Mailbag segment in Season 1's, Hot Water Bottle (Episode 15) that he had gone fishing on Lake Scugog the previous May for pickerel. Incidentally this marina has become known locally as Brackstons' Marina as the owner has enjoyed continuous association with the show. This would include Ranger Gord’s watchtower, some of the Adventures with Bill segments, scenes with Buzz Sherwood and his plane and Glen Brackstons' Marina. This would make sense as many segments of the show were shot on and around Lake Rosseau (Port Carling is surrounded by this lake). Further, this specifically points to the Town of Port Carling to be the real location of the Town of Possum Lake. With some research this would put the location between Barrie and Parry Sound. In realistic terms, this is understood as being situated in cottage country in the Muskoka’s, which is a popular vacation spot for many South Western Ontarians. Possum Lodge and the Possum Lake area is said (according to Red's Facebook page) to be approximately 148 beer stores north of Toronto. It is also situated in the area of Port Asbestos. Possum Lodge is situated on the most ideal spot of Possum Lake to construct a building (as said by red to Kevin Black in a season 5 segment of Ask the Experts) and just outside of the fictional town of Possum Lake.

Ruth Read received her BFA (sculpture) from Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario. Since then she has exhibited in both group and solo shows at The Station Gallery, Whitby, the Robert McLaughlin Gallery, Oshawa, the Visual Arts Centre, Clarington, and the Latcham Gallery, Stouffville, as well as other galleries in Ontario and St. John’s, Newfoundland. She has taught art classes at The Station Gallery, the Haliburton School of the Arts, the Visual Arts Centre, Clarington and for Fleming College.

An interest in structure and articulation is an underlying factor in all of my work. It has led directly to my interest in life drawing, portraiture, painting and installation sculptures, which incorporate the proportions of the human figure. I create an environment conceived in painterly terms while dealing with real and illusionary space. The viewer’s visual participation is engaged by using familiar objects which direct the mood of the work through association of ideas.

Inspired by the song by Fredrick Brooks, “Nine empty rooms” is a multi media sculpture installation reflecting on the abandoned house, memories of the past and its occupants. Further interpretations by music and dance will be woven through the narrative.

The Robert McLaughlin Gallery is in the treaty lands of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation. This land has been the traditional territory of the Michi Saagiig Nishnaabeg since 1700; before that time, it was stewarded by various communities belonging to the Haudenosaunee and Wendat confederacies. It is covered under the Williams Treaties and the Dish with One Spoon Wampum.

This area continues to be home to many Indigenous people from across Mishiike Minisi. We recognize the sovereignty of all Indigenous nations and are grateful for the opportunity to learn, live, and work on this land.

We acknowledge that the RMG is in treaty land, and respect our collective responsibility to protect and nurture the land. We also recognize the continuing impacts of colonialism and our responsibilities to redress the ways this has helped shape our organization. Taking the go train out from the city. Running around your friends little suburb that’s a copy paste of everywhere else in the province, but it’s still theirs. Seeing the stars on lake scugog after a half hour drive. Taking a bus and running wild around my hometown seeing all the spots from when i was 6. Wandering around sauga seeing where I could’ve been if I didn’t leave, and what’s changed since I was 13. heading out to niagara, the crumbling tourist trap of a town that was the backdrop to a lot of my dumb kid adventures. The spots in Burlington on the water where i fucked around and met people i never saw again. the abandoned bus stop overlooking the pond behind the university where i smoked and talked with strangers and grew my soul just a little. late night drives on the highway watching the scenery change from houses and offices to the city lights. driving up north and looking at the little ski village and snowed in forest clearing with the biggest eyes you could dream of. fireworks in the night for olympics on the other side of the country that you’ve still never seen. driving to the subway station at the city limits so you could take the train in for a taste of city life years before you moved there. walking out at bloor yonge, or yonge and dundas, or union, tasting a whole different world than kid you was used to, something you could see but never have, until you did, and you got lost in it.

you know this city like the back of your hand but you lose yourself in it every time. or that’s what you try to convince yourself, when you hang around and study or smoke or whatever in the same few spots, because even in this crazy city everything and everyone has to go somewhere. and even when the years pass and the shops get razed for condo buildings, the streets are torn up for a new subway, some things still manage to look the same as they did. when the light shines at the right angle when you’re walking by the right spot, when you see a place you’ve associated with your memories, for a split second you don’t exist in 2023. there hasn’t been a pandemic, you could still try to afford to live here on your own, the radios playing Hold On We’re Going Home, you could see a shadow of those old shops where the new high rises stand, the old bar your parents took you to, these things all come back to life again if only for a moment. but that second is over and all those things really did happen, and you’re standing here in the present surrounded by it all, and you can only see the past like a glimpse of a maintenance sign in a subway tunnel in between stations.

or in old photographs, the ones that survived anyways, memories etched into chemical emulsions and digital files, those old songs are still there, and even if things will never be the same, you can live and feel now with your own perspective while enjoying the good things you can scrape from the past, because ultimately the world exists here today, not in the past or in a photograph, and these songs i write are my experiences in the present as shaped by things in the past, and not everything is a true story because the true stories really aren’t always so pretty to tell, and that’s the art of telling a story anyways, you dramatize it a little to make it engaging to its audience, right? so i get to be a little dramatic and let my pen run free. like that spiritual stranger at the bus stop who preached peace love and harmony, green is an energy of focus and of creating something, and i try to create something, dipping my pen using my heart as the inkwell and putting a little piece of it in the shit that i write on this blog

and so from all of this comes the theme, the story of my life and things that happened along the subway line, the places ive been and memories associated with them, the things that happened in my life that brought me here today. it wouldn’t be in any chronological order but from left to right, i imagine myself starting it off with a melancholy nostalgic guitar or something for Kipling, the start of my adventures, where we kicked off into the city when i was a kid and didn’t live here, coming in with family and all that time spent

i need to write when i think of things because i have things in my head all the time and just never put them anywhere and there’s some things i wanna make before i forget
