bitches be like "oh i don't get sensory overload" and then nearly scream and smash their phone into the ground because their little cousin wanted to play roblox and they really like their little cousin and adore her so much but this time the fact that she is constantly talking and her voice grates ever so slightly on the ears and that she's very loud and bubbly and that she's singing and talking and there's music from the game blasting through her tablet as well and cooking noises and smells in the background from their mum and their sister who is also a darling keeps putting her fucking arm on theirs and they can feel their clothes and skin and its also hot and they're also expected to talk and play and be high energy and they just cant fucking take it so wind up ranting on tumblr about it whilst also wishing never to interact with a human ever again.
its me, i'm bitches <333

It is important to keep in mind that enjoyable things can be overwhelming too.
Hanging out with a friend talking about your special interest can be overwhelming (too much braining).
Going to dinner with a few people that you love, having your favorite food, can be overwhelming (too loud/too many conversations at once).
Watching an amazing movie, or listening to your favorite concert (even at home!), can be overwhelming (too many feels (also too loud, too many flashes of light/fast cuts, you name it - but even without that, don't forget about the feels.)).
Being hugged and getting head scritches can be hoverwhelming (too much sensory).
Focusing on your favorite thing to do, all by yourself, can be overwhelming (again, too much braining).
And lastly:
Whether or not a thing is overwhelming is sometimes (often!) also a matter of other circumstances, such as: you were drained from the day before already, or slept badly, or had to do a Bad Thing in the morning of that day.
Listen to your body and your brain and your mind, and don't push yourself too hard just because this thing is a thing that you love.
Yes, it sucks. But overwhelm sucks too. Proceed with caution, please, friend.

Caretaker, normally a friend of Whumper’s, noticing that Whumpee is visibly uncomfortable and overwhelmed at a party Whumper is forcing them to attend.
“Hey, hey…it’s pretty loud, yeah? Do you need a break? You wanna step outside with me? I won’t make you talk, we can just…be quiet for a minute. I’m sure Whumper won’t mind.”

When you leave the family gathering in the living room because they're too loud and too boisterous and you're trying not to get overwhelmed, and then you sit in your quiet guest bedroom that used to be your own bedroom but there is nothing here to remind you of that, not even the way the furniture is arranged, and you hear them laughing and having a good time-
and you're both relieved you're not in the middle of that wall of sound and also deeply, deeply sad that you can't, that you won't ever know what everyone just laughed so loudly about, that you're just not part of their fun-
and of course you would never ask them to not have fun, of course not, you're not a monster-
but it eats at you, it eats.

Sensory issues can be so hard to explain. I can't always tell you specifically what I am reacting to. There's multiple things going on at once and I can tolerate any of them individually but not together. I can be in a place for a few hours without being stressed but not much longer.
Like if I say I'm experiencing sensory overload and need some kind of accommodation people wanna know what the problem is. Is it lights? Noise? Smells? Temperature? I don't fucking know, all I know is it feels like my brain is puking up expired mayonnaise.
