Hiii, since you really like Jiro (which is understandable, who wouldn't, he deserves all the hugs <3), I was wondering what you thought of him repeatedly choosing to be a paladin and name his character something identical to Shiro in Monsters and Mana. Because I was thinking it might perhaps say something about a subconscious desire to actually be a paladin, or be Shiro
I wholeheartedly agree!!
“If I can’t be Shiro? Fine. I’ll be his brother instead. And my goals are still the same, and they’re inline with his.”
And yeah. Jiro chose to be a Paladin, even after he believed he was seemingly rejected by BlackLion. Keith, meanwhile, literally kept running away which resulted in, y’know, the Team nearly DYING. And while grounded? Guess who built the coalition while Keith kept noping off with the Blades (who demanded a “new Black Lion pilot”)? That’s right, Jiro did (alongside Allura, Coran, and the rest of the Paladins.)
But Jiro’s the one who managed it since Allura was split between Diplomat/Commander and Paladin duties; and as we see later on when Coran takes it over once Jiro’s flying with Black Lion…Coran’s skills lie elsewhere. Could Allura have done it herself? Yes, but why should she have to do it alone. Could Shiro have done it with Allura and Coran? Again, yes. (But—by no fault of Shiro’s—Shiro wasn’t there to do it.)
So. Jiro is no replacement for Shiro whatsoever. Shiro is quite frankly MUCH better as a field captain than Jiro is, and more amicable overall with, say, keeping the Team’s morale up. But. Jiro still has his own skills. (Let’s be honest, Shiro would be pretty bored and frustrated with only getting to command from central command—the REAL Shiro anyway, not that Greyhaired Walking Corpse Automaton—and moreso than Allura and Jiro were. What really got to Allura was feeling disconnected from the Paladins, and what really got to Jiro was believing BlackLion finally rejected “him as Shiro” as “too broken” or “too corrupted.”)
And Jiro chose to step up and fill a role, then stepped up again to try anyway after thinking he’d been rejected to be Paladin. He tries. He chooses. And it’s not because of what he’s “programed to do”, it’s because he truly wants to. (He also chooses to deny what he wants when it’s seemingly in direct conflict with what BlackLion or the Team wants or needs. He also does his best to apologize and make amends when he screws up and hurts his friends. Team Voltron bicker A Lot. It got more mean-spirited in the middle and late seasons, but. Pretty sure Jiro’s the only one to constantly apologize, even when he’s not in the wrong (but he handled it poorly.))
-
…so keep in mind this Fanfic (Series) is on hiatus atm, but Jiro 1) repeatedly choosing to be a paladin and 2) arguably naming himself subconsciously is what sent my brain down a “Jiro Lives + Stays + becomes a Paladin in his own right” rabbit hole. (You can see my working ideas in my Grey Paladin Jiro, Grey Paladin of Time, Veeladee Fixit, Blackbox Verse, Rewrite the Stars, Shirotember, cloneganes, and triganes tags. Some of the ideas there have been discarded, but I’ve got more “Jiro as Paladin” and “Jiro as Shiro’s Brother/Jiro with SpaceFam” content there. I do plan on writing actual fic besides the one fic started and restarted sitting on my harddrive, but I’ve had to step away for a bit.)
But. The general idea?
—Canon diverges after that second (offscreen) DnD Session. (Coran is still a pretty vindictive DM, but feels actual remorse for one-shotting Jiro’s characters with fudged rolls to try and force him to pick any other class to play.)
—Jiro’s more insecure about his place as a Paladin than ever, and confronts BlackLion about it.
—BlackLion responds by pulling Jiro into the astral plane, where finally someone finds Shiro.
—(Obviously Shiro is rescued—in his own body tyvm—and remains Black Paladin…but he’s got a LOT of abandonment issues to sort through. Things are ROUGH because 1) such good angst potential but mostly? 2) …just let Shiro be upset. He has every right to be.)
So…
—Shiro deserves to be Black Paladin (and while the Lions ALL officially accept other Pilots, Paladinship is no longer questioned. For Anyone.)
—Jiro deserves to have his OWN Paladinship. With his own Lion. (For pity’s sake the Second Meteor is right there.) Also: White Paladin of Light Allura? White Paladin Allura.
—(Jiro’s Paladinship should reflect how his skills compliment both Shiro and Allura Space, Light, and Time. Grey as the blurred gradient between the two yet still distinct in its own right, not a “discount” any more than green is for yellow and blue.)
..And yeah, space to allowed for things to be very, very messy. (But they get better. Really.)

Shirotember Day 7 - Black Lion
It’s short-n-sweet, but I finally have contribution to Shirotember!  This is a little extra made-up scene right after the events of Space Mall.  Thanks for reading and hope you enjoy.
-----------
Shiro staggers out from the Black Lion’s open jaws, the clack of his boots heavy on the cold floor of its hangar.  His pulse races at a deafening gallop in his ears.  He’s not sure how it’s possible to feel so keyed up when his physical body never even left the Lion’s cockpit, but he also figures that fighting for your life is fighting for your life, no matter what the circumstance.  He takes a shuddering breath, all too loud in the silent, cavernous chamber.  He reminds himself: we never left the Castle.  I'm safe.
He’s also come to expect how his body remembers the things his mind only recalls in vague, tenebrous flashes of terror and death.  They bombard him now, blood-soaked and raw as he leaves yet another arena behind and for an all-too-brief respite.  Roaring shouts of Vrepit sa! and Champion! dog him like mocking phantoms.
“We never left the Castle.  I'm safe.”
He says it again, out loud to himself. Then again.  The volume of his voice fades with the tightness in his chest.  As it relaxes its grip, it returns to background noise, and he's confident the arena is behind him once more.  We never left the Castle.  I'm safe.
As the Lion rises and returns to rest on its haunches, Shiro crosses over to one of her enormous claws.  With an outstretched hand, he leans against her solid weight, borrowing her strength for just a little longer.  He looks up, gaze settling over the robust angles of her feline face.  The glow of her jowls.  The gold of her crown.
He understands her so much better now.  His hammering pulse eases in her solid presence, the last of his leftover adrenaline draining out of him like a poison.   A swell of gratitude seeps, then surges within him despite his frayed, exhausted psyche.  Gratitude for hearing his plea for help in strengthening their bond.  And yes, for her timely rescue.
But moreso than anything, for her trust.
For trusting him with her painful past.  For trusting him to accept her in revealing her shame.
It was the undercurrent he sensed behind everything that she showed him. He sensed it even as he exchanged blows with Zarkon.  And not because she was the one putting Shiro and Voltron at risk, but because she thought she had failed him.  Failed Zarkon.
There was the shame, but also the fear.  That Shiro would learn her past, and even if he didn’t blame her, he might still reject her.  That it would be wiser for him to be wary about deepening their bond
“It wasn’t your fault,” Shiro says, pressing his hand against her claw.  Firming up his own presence for her to draw on.  “He was the one who failed you.  He broke your trust.  He broke everyone’s.”
It blows him away to imagine that for ten thousand deca-phoebs, she blamed herself.  Sat in a box for all that time, with so much regret over the ruin came to their family, and for all the subsequent suffering and extinction of so many innocent people.  For so long, she thought about what she could have done more to prevent her paladin from falling into madness.  And that now, how desperate she is for Shiro to forgive her, and accept her anyway.
And that...that he understands more than he can express.  Tears prickle at his eyes.  He blinks them away.  “Of course I accept you.  There’s nothing to forgive.  That’s too much for anyone to put on themselves.  Especially you.  You did everything you could.  I know you did.  But you couldn’t make his choices for him.  He had to believe in your bond as much as you did.”
Still, it must have been so hard for her.  Even after all of Zarkon’s atrocities, Shiro understands more than ever how hard it would be to give up a belief that’s seared into your soul.  To abandon the hope that the paladin she once knew might one day ride with her again.  To say goodbye, forever, to the paladin she had loved.
But she had done it.  She had done it for him. With resolve, she put it on the line for Shiro and pulled him out of the fire.  Again.
A gentle vibration rumbles in his chest.  A purr.
He smiles.  Tells her, “We both did.”
Then, like a sudden rainstorm, an outpouring of pure serenity washes over him.  Next, a stirring affection.  Finally, her golden eyes twinkle, accompanied by an bright-eyed confidence in the here and now, and a promise to never make the same mistakes again.  They were a team.  They would always be a team.  If one falters, the other will be there to lend them their strength, no matter the risk, nor how dire the circumstances.
Shiro’s next inhale is sharp, the exhale slow.  Resolve flows through him like an antidote, and for the present moment at least, it utterly neutralizes the lingering dread ravaging his weathered psyche.  “I promise, too,” he says, breathless from wonder, and no longer from fear.

Uncanny Resemblance
Writer Nonnie is back to give us a bit of ‘Shiro is Voltron’ taste and I’m completely in love with it.  I’m also in love with Ryou being his mechanic self and finding machines that will sing back to him.  A fun happy read that leaves you feeling better!
_____________________________________
((Only two things were on my mind writing this one. All the meta about Shiro and Voltron looking so suspiciously similar… and this scene from Young Justice:Outsiders -  /watch?v=47dAAAJXR0I so freaking funny in a way and I agree with one of the comments that Lian, the baby, should have tried to imitate them, much to Chair Guy’s confusion/possible amusement. Anyways, enjoy!)
~~~
All things considered, the Paladins never actually got a good look at Voltron, right?
Yes, they know where they all fit. Lance and Hunk are the legs, the foundation of the team. Keith and Pidge are the arms and hands, offense and defense respectively. Shiro formed the chest and head, the heart and mind, leading them.
However, there was only a vague idea of what Voltron looked like except for the occasional video feed they managed to watch every now and then.
The first time they did watch, they noticed something about Voltron.
“Hey Shiro,” Pidge, eyes wide and bright with a smile, pointed at the feed. “It kinda looks like you.”
Shiro narrowed his eyes. “I don’t have-” He vaguely gestured to the horns on the top. “You know.”
“Same shape,” Keith shrugged. “And the nose sorta matches.”
Looking again, Shiro noticed that yes, both he and Voltron had a marking on their nose. In Shiro’s case, it was his scar. In Voltron’s, well, he didn’t know what it was exactly if not for aesthetic or a byproduct of the original Lion’s design.
“Huh.” Shiro tilted his head again. “I guess so.”
Lance looked at the Blue Lion. “Man it’d be funny if they could bite stuff.”
“Then you wouldn’t be able to kick.” Keith huffed and smirked.
“Yeah, you'r right.” Lance sighed. “It’d make more sense if Red and Green could bite stuff.”
Shiro was still looking at the image of Voltron. The way it-well, they-moved. He wasn’t sure why but the more he watched the more it did feel familiar.
The thought left his mind, and he was back to the routine of training and trying to relax.
Ryou brought it up as well.
“Did Alfor build the armor before or after the Lions?” He asked one day while tinkering with an odd box that beeped.
“Why do you ask that?” Shiro looked at him, examining a similar box.
“The symbol on the armor.” Ryou poked one of the etchings, making the box beep again. “Are you trying to talk little one? Is my human mind too dumb to understand you?”
Shiro smiled a little. “I guess after. The ore did half the work if I remember Coran’s story right.”
“Hmm.” Ryou was deep in thought. “It suits you just right.” He poked another etching, earning another beep in a slightly different tone. “Aha! Music!”
That surprised Shiro. “It suits me?”
“Yeah,” Ryou shrugged. “Fits you like a glove. Really shows off that Superman bod of yours.”
“All the armor fits like a glove. Altean tech is made to adapt as much as they do.” Shiro heard another beep from the box he was looking at before.
“You wait your turn.” Ryou pointed to the other box. “Do, re.” He hummed.
The box copied his tones, adding the mi note.
“Taka I think I’ getting the hang of this!” Ryou grinned. “Do re mi!”
The box continued, adding the fa note next.
“Haha!” Ryou smiled and laughed.
“Ryou-” Shiro began to say before Ryou groaned. “I know you’re having fun with these music boxes but Superman bod? Really?”
“Well I mean,” Ryou tilted his head. “It’s a heroic looking figure, so it’s probably just coincidental.”
“Coincidental huh?” Shiro asked himself. “I guess the nose thing is a coincidence too.”
“Nose thing?” Ryou looked at Shiro.
“Never mind.” Shiro shook his head. “Coincidence.”
Ryou made an unconvinced noise. “If you say so.”
The box beeped six notes now.
“Have fun with these two.” Shiro smiled and began walking out.
“Uh-huh.” Ryou hummed again, happy the box responded.
Shiro looked at the other box, and leaned down to it. “Make sure he doesn’t do anything crazy, okay?”
The box beeped softly, slightly to his surprise.
“Hey hey hey don’t mess with him!” Ryou yelled.
Shiro raised his hands and walked out.
At night, when all was quiet and still, Shiro was up again. No nightmares, he just wasn’t tired enough to go to sleep yet. With the nightlight on-truly acting his technical age of six-he looked up at the ceiling and began to think.
Coincidence, right?
The same build, the nose marking, the movements.
His hand went to his chest, feeling the vague shape of two scars across each pectoral that formed a crooked arrow pointing downward.
Just a coincidence?
“TAKA HOLY FUDGE!” Ryou busted into the room with the boxes in his arms. “I think I figured it out!”
Shiro’s heart raced at the sudden event, but he began to relax as he saw Ryou sing a few notes, with the boxes replying in…
A different sequence of notes…?
“Their language is…?” Shiro raised an eyebrow.
“Their language is music!” Ryou hopped onto the futon and put down the boxes. “This one prefers major key,” he gestured to the one he referred to as a ‘he’ earlier. “And this one sings in minor!” He gestured to the other one. “And get this!” Ryou was giddy. “They can harmonize!”
“Which means?” Shiro looked at them. The boxes didn’t seem to do anything but beep.
“I don’t know.” Ryou was still smiling. “But its cool!”
Shiro must have had an odd expression on his face.
“Oh, sorry.” Ryou began whispering. “Were you trying to sleep?”
Shiro sighed and laid back. “No. Just thinking.”
“Oh okay.” Ryou’s voice was low and soft but Shiro could still hear a little excitement in there. “I’m gonna try to talk to them a bit more, good night Taka.” Ryou kissed Shiro’s forehead.
“Good night Ryou.” Shiro smiled, closing his eyes.
The boxes beeped softly.
“Taka.”
“Hm?”
“I think they’re saying good night to you.” Ryou’s excitement was barely contained in his whisper.
“Good night music boxes.” Shiro waved his hand and turned over onto his side.
When Ryou left, he opened his eyes again, rolling onto his back and sighing.
Coincidence?
A purr entered his mind. The Black Lion was reassuring him.
Heart and mind of Voltron.
Leader.
That’s what she told him.
Shiro smiled and closed his eyes again. He went asleep, the weight on his shoulders feeling just a bit lighter than it usually does.
Sure, it was still heavy, but just for tonight, it wasn’t a problem.
Tonight, he was happy.
