rossiu & simon
I understand Rossiu, though. If I hadn’t met you... If I’d been born in that village... I might have turned out like that.
[id: a set of 9 gifs of simon and rossiu (two gurren lagann characters) interacting. the first 4 are pre-timeskip, and the last 4 are post-timeskip. rossiu taking simon’s hand in episode 23 splits the two sets. longer id under cut.]
[continued id: the first gif is rossiu and simon silently nodding at each other (in episode 8, where he’s heading off to fight the big battle). the second gif is a grieving simon bowing his head and apologizing to rossiu, with dayakka and leeron also there. the third is rossiu moving forward to talk to simon in his room, but leeron stops him. (both from episode 9-ish). the fourth is nia calling simon and rossiu in gurren lagann;- they’re on a big split-screen view. simon nods at nia and agrees to what she’s asking, and a startled rossiu yells at him for it. the fifth is rossiu taking simon’s hand and is extra big. all the other gifs are in sets of two, but this one stands alone. the sixth is post-timeskip and is simon uncomfortably realizing that rossiu’s walked in to him cheering about getting married to nia. the seventh is rossiu taking simon’s core drill after he’s imprisoned. the eighth is from simon’s trial and cuts between his and rossiu’s faces and their intense expressions. the ninth is rossiu (still injured from simon’s punch, and saying he’ll watch over earth) speaking and simon replying, with kinon also there. end id.]

Simon the Digger
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Age: 14
Home: Giha Village (Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann)
Likes: Nia, drills, striking the earth and/or piercing the heavens
Dislikes: Earthquakes, cave-ins
Mech: Lagann, Gurren Lagann, or Tengen Toppa Lagann
Simon is really good at digging, which is good. Giha Village is located underground, and while it has all the clean water, livestock, and electricity a community could ask for, it also has a problem where parts of the village cave in and need to be dug out again. A seismically-induced cave-in squished Simon’s parents, but he kept digging regardless. His adventures truly started when he found a mysterious drill bit and a mech clearly designed to form the h…wait, that’s Voltron.
Anyways. Simon starts the series as a nice, quiet kid. Polite, humble, shy, fearful. He fought Beastmen in giant mech battles, but only because his friends both encouraged and needed him to. He eventually grows into a braver and more confident man, but only after getting too old for consideration in this bracket. Though whatever his age, he’s self-sacrificing, to a degree dangerous to both his enemies and himself.
I’m sorry I couldn’t find much to say about Simon. And Tumblr doesn’t have a lot of text posts specifically about Simon for me to draw on. I’m sorry this profile is so short, but I really need to move on to the next one if i want to start the next round of polls this month…

PRIMAL LAGANN
1.000 years from now, Three Heros, Simon, a Young little man and younger brother to Kamina leader of team gurren and Yoko Littner a redheaded Sniper would Breach to the surface in their mecha known as Lagann, from here they would normally get to the Surface however here is not gonna go on as the you know
after having Drilled up to the Surface, Simon, Kamia and Yoko are amazed at the sight of the surface world tho as barren as it is, Yoko Littner use this to introduce herself for the first time
“it´s Yoko By the Way” Said Yoko Littner as Simon looks at Her “that´s My Name we never introduced ourselves did we?” as Kamina and Simon introduce themselves “im Kamina and this is Simon” Kamia says to Yoko, “Nice to meet ya” Replies Yoko Littner. Boota Comes out of Yoko´s Cleavage when Yoko and Kamina Find out they are falling down all of a sudden
“SIMON DO SOMETHING” Panic Spread as they are falling down and then
BANG! they crash down breaking through into a tunnel leading even deeper underground, deeper than their Giha ever were.
and then they All seem to Float. “Huh is it just me or are we floating in mid air?” Says Yoko to Simon “what the hell??? "We are?!" to Simon's Surprise and
if there is an atmosphere confused over otherworldly sight, they Look down as if looking down into a whole other planet, a World underneath the World, however as the Adore the sight  it's here the Core Drill is lost to Simon and he Desperately tries to get it back
however it Floats away too quickly as the gravity gets Stronger and Stronger and then
like a Shooting star the Lagann lands onto this Hollow Earth World,
with a huge impact it crashes into a Rainforest of sorts, a primal world lost to time.
As they Recover inside of the Lost World they Get Outside for the First time since the battle an the first Thing Kamina dose to Simon is Punching him in the Face “SIMON You Dumb Fuck, You lost the Coredrill and look where we are now im going to KILL YOU” Kamina pulls out his Sword but Yoko Littner Stops them from fighting “HEY HEY” Yells Yoko Littner in between Kamina and Simon with her Arms Holding them “Look This did not go as Planned for any of us so, Let´s just Calm down ok” Yoko insures Them both as Kamina and Simon start calm down a bit and then they then sit down at the ruins of what was once lagann as Yoko Littner Explains to both of them everything isn´t as Bad as it can be, “Look it´s Not the end of the World i mean surely nobody saw us go down here into this… Hollow Earth Type of a Place” Tells Yoko to Kamina and Simon “But maybe if we can find the Core Drill we might be Able to get out of here”. Yoko Littner takes off her Chopstick and makes an X mark on the Tree Bark, Yoko littner smiles at Kamina and Simon who then get up “Alright so to make it easier to find our way back here to, i'm leaving an X everywhere we Go” Says Yoko as the Gang are off to an adventure in a new realm.
all of a sudden tho, a loud Roar Stops them all dead in their Tracks
they all look as comming out of the forest, a GIGANTIC, Feathered Short armed Predator, comes out, It Looks at the trio with unnerving, Bird like stare, eyes pinning
“Is that a T-rex?” Simon says in Worry as the Tyrannosaurus-Rex Roars at them and it Gose about attack Simon however Yoko Littner Shoots at it´s face, Simon Stares as Kamina and Yoko Takes care of the prehistoric predator together “I FOUND IT” Screams simon looking at the Coredrill stuck in a Tree, “go get it Simon we´ll Take care of big bird here” Yells Yoko Littner as she and Kamina Try to buy time for Simon to get it back. the Tyrannosaurus Looks around sniffing about as Yoko Littner Reloads and She Takes aim at the Eye with her Arrows, the T-Rex Roars in Pain as Kamina then Makes a Slice in it´s Legs the Tyrannosaurs-Rex Stares Down Kamina and almost gets Him with his Katana stuck to it´s Leg
Simon In the near by jungles Gets the Coredrill and then RUSH back to Get into Lagann
“I GOT IT GO GO GO” Screams Simon before the T-Rex Spots him and Is almost Snapped up, the Gang Get´s Lagann Working agian and the Tyrannosaurus-Rex roars as The Fight is between animal and Machine, the Tyrannosaurs-Rex Bites Down on Lagann´s Arm and Throws it Around like it's a Dog's Toy but it quickly Gets Back up as Yoko Littner Shoots the Tyrannosaurus-Rex using her Electroshock at it “We better get back to the Surface” Says Yoko Littner to Simon as He is Working on it and then as thing can´t Get Much worse they are pushed over towards a cliff edge, the T-Rex about to end them all off. it´s All over when Simon at a last moment Gets it back up and flying towards the Surface world,
the T-Rex Roars at them as they are flying towards the sky of the hollow Earth world here.
they are all back to the Surface with a HUGE BANG! “WOW That was ehh, Was something eh?” Yoko Littner Replies to Kamina and Simon “Yeah” Says Simon “Atleast we can hopefully change the world for the better” Says Simon with a huge smile on his face and they are ready, as Team dai Gurren gotta start somewhere… Even if they almost died.

Viral is the only one who is an unwilling witness to it, the sounds carrying to his sharp ears. A scream of anger, grief. Shattering glass. A terrible silence eventually broken by muffled sobs. He turns to walk back the way he came, but something keeps him in place.
And so he’s there when she eventually emerges, and it doesn’t take a genius to tell that something has gone horribly wrong. The front of her uniform whites is no longer white and there are mirrors in her knuckles, reflecting white and red and pain.
When Rossiu’s eyes meet his, they grow wide and horrified. He knows she doesn’t want to be found here like this, so he guides her away, planning on finding the nearest janitor to clean away the cause of her distress.
It unnerves the beastman when she doesn’t fight him and instead withdraws into herself.
He’s the one who scouts out empty hallways as he guides her back to the living quarters she shares with Simon. The last thing she wants, Viral knows, is running into someone when she’s in this state. She’s broken, inside and out.
.*.
He can smell it on her. The blood. The tears. Even through a fresh change of clothes and the soap she’d rubbed her skin raw with, he can smell what she has just lost. Something so small it was hardly there, so small and so wonderful. But Rossiu is stone-faced on the bridge, unmovable.
At her side, her fingers curl into a silent fist, knuckles torn and bloody and still glittering with shards of mirror.
When he finally catches her eye, he can tell she knows he knows. But she turns a silent look of challenge on him, and to his surprise he backs down. This isn’t his battle. He helped her the only way he could, and now it’s no longer his decision. He knows the the pain of having something so precious slip through his claws.
He once had dreams of family.
Hers were much more fully realized.
But there’s no use for what-ifs. He’d drive himself further into insanity if he ever took that road. Rossini’s too much like him, in that way. She’ll never look back, never confront the raw grief. Instead she’ll turn it inward and bury it deep within her marrow where it will never show.
And what Simon doesn’t know won’t hurt him.

(max raabe voice) oops i did it again, i made an AU, got lost in the game...
anyway, here’s what i’ve come to call the TYL AU, or Ten Years Later AU, aka the one in which Kamina and Simon only leave Giha 10 years after canon
------------
ten years before the events of this AU, the ceiling of Giha did not break under the weight of a Gunman fought by Yoko, instead held just enough that the surface remained a simple dream, but crushed Kamina’s hopes along with his arm and the remnants of Simon’s self-confidence under the boulders that did not hold
it took time for Kamina to recover, to learn to live without his left arm. living with the disdain of the others at a man who cannot dig was a lot easier, after all it’s not like they ever had a lot of appreciation for him
the chief made him look after the pig-moles once he recovered, and Kamina would’ve told him to go fuck himself, but the small pig-mole who had stayed with Kamina in his cell was getting picked on by the larger ones at that exact moment and it reminded Kamina of Simon, so he just had to intervene
Simon calls the pig-mole Boota, Kamina calls him Dinner. he’s an official member of Team Gurren
Kamina is even louder, even more bombastic, even more reckless, even more more than before his accident. it helps him hide his guilt over Simon’s mental state, which he feels is his fault
when Simon regained his senses after the earthquake and the rockfall, he was uninjured and Kamina was partially crushed and the voice in his head that judges everything he does kept repeating that it was his fault, that Kamina would’ve never been hurt like that if Simon hadn’t been here, in the way, all because he refused to go hide without his bro
if this is what showing a little courage brings, then he will keep on being a coward, will keep on fleeing, keep on digging deeper and deeper, until he can hide all of his guilt in the earth’s comforting embrace
it takes barely a few years for Kamina to feel like he is ready to spread his wings once more and escape Giha’s oppressive atmosphere for good
it takes a lot longer for him to push Simon to dig through the heavens rather than into hell
the two of them are even more codependent than they used to

What Is The Spiral Nemesis?
I wanted to talk about this, but I don’t got any friends who are really Gurren Lagann nuts like me.
Tumblr media
The Spiral Nemesis.
In the grand scheme of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, it’s not important. It’s a McGuffin to push the plot. It pushes the Anti-Spiral to oppress Spiral Races, whether they know it or not. It’s why Lordgenome forces humanity underground and creates the Beastmen, a race that cannot generate Spiral Energy due to the inability to reproduce, and thus, inability to evolve.
According to the Anti-Spiral, if enough Spiral Energy was to be generated, all Spiral lifeforms in the universe would eventually start evolving into full-sized galaxies. The sudden imbalance of mass in the universe would lead to these mega-galaxies devouring each other, forming a black hole that would consume all of existence.
Tumblr media
Once discovered, the original race who discovered this apocalyptic event locked away their bodies into a state of suspended animation, ceasing their own evolution. Their collective consciousness created The Anti-Spiral, who began its mission to purge Spiral Energy from the rest of the universe. Their desire so desperate that their last breath was to plead to Simon not to allow this doomsday to pass.
And yet, I couldn’t help but wonder about the nature of Spiral Nemesis. It seems simple enough; its someone else putting a wall in Simon and co.’s way and their drill will pierce through that wall and they won’t let anyone hold them back from living. But the older I got, the more I thought about the concept and how it fits into the show’s overall themes.
I’m not the first, or last, to really think about this from the anime from 2008. I saw multiple theories from several forums. There’s quite a few theories that go back and forth. With theory that I use to take to was that it was merely a theory.
Spiral Nemesis Isn’t Real.
Tumblr media
I use to think that Spiral Nemesis was nothing more than a theory. A theory that was projected as fact by a race of random aliens trying to impose their will on the universe. After all, if it WAS real, how would they know? How could they prove it? It reminded me of someone else; the chief of Giha Village.
Tumblr media
Someone who imposed his will on those he governed. “There is no sky, there is nothing above the ceiling! The surface does not exist!”
Or words to that affect.
It would make sense, in a way, for the story to go full circle to talk about its themes of progression and moving forward. To not let the people of the past oppose the people of the future. It made sense to me, but it didn’t feel...whole. It didn’t feel complete. Maybe this is me putting too much stock in an anime that has a sniper in booty shorts fighting giant robots, but I guess I couldn’t stop but wonder if that really was all to Spiral Nemesis when a new theory came to my head.
The Spiral Nemesis is a Self-Fulfilling Prophecy!
Tumblr media
The Power of The Spiral is the power to keep moving forward. To evolve from the person you were a moment ago. Little by little with each turn. Because that’s how a drill works. A drill that pierces the heavens. A drill that knocks down walls in front of it and never gives up.
A perpetual drill that doesn’t stop and pumps out more energy until the barrier in front of it is broken down.
The Anti-Spiral are a barrier in Simon’s way. A wall that forces him and the rest of Team Dai-Gurren to dig deep and generate greater amounts of Spiral Energy until they’re able to defeat them. Energy they wouldn’t have generated if not for several generations, as oppose to all at once over the course of about two days.
Tumblr media
The Anti-Spiral, by their very nature, were doomed to fail. Eventually, whether Simon or someone else, would’ve failed. Some race, somebody, would’ve rose up to oppose them. Survivors of a doomed world or some other race they spared and oppressed. They were doomed to run into a Spiral Warrior powerful enough to tear them down, forcing them to generate more and more Spiral Energy until they couldn’t stand up to ‘em. Whether Spiral Nemesis is real or not is almost irrelevant.
But this thought left me more unsatisfied, because, well, obviously the universe didn’t implode on itself in the end. If anything, it felt like Spiral Nemesis was just a means to an end; to be the motivation for the Anti-Spiral. In that case, why bother naming this universe-sized apocalypse. Just say ‘the universe will go boom with enough Spiral Energy’. Was I overthinking this?
Tumblr media
Yes.
But that didn’t stop me, dammit!
And then, like a epiphany, and after the nth re-watch, answer I was satisfied came to me.
Spiral Nemeis Is Real...And It’s Inevitable?!
Everything that lives has to die.
Tumblr media
It’s a sad fact of reality, a universal truth and Gurren Lagann makes sure we know that. Kamina dies, Nia dies, Kittan dies. We can mourn, we can be in pain, we can be angry, but we can’t let these deaths chain us down or hold us back. We all need to eventually dust ourselves off and keep going.
Everything dies.
That includes the universe.
Tumblr media
And thus, the culmination of all these theories: The Anti-Spiral was only half-right and their attempts to stop the Spiral Nemesis only sped it up. The universe is doomed to die. Because everything dies. Whether Spiral Races overuses Spiral Energy or not, the use of Spiral Energy at all would lead to the universe’s end.
Spiral Nemesis could not be stopped. They couldn’t stop it and Simon can’t hold it off either. It’s doomed to happen.
Tumblr media
But it’s not a bad thing. Cause while death is inevitable, life is as well. I have no proof of this, but much like the theory of the Big Bang, I firmly think that when Spiral Nemesis happens, it’ll end in a new, bigger universe that can contain more Spiral Energy, which will die and repeat. Maybe the Anti-Spiral new of the previous universe’s own nemesis and saw it as its destruction and not just it reaching the end of its lifespan.
It’s a life cycle-the Life Cycle of the Universe. The Anti-Spirals, somehow discovering this, tried to stop this cycle. They tried to cheat death-to cheat nature.
They feared death and tried to control it.
But as we’ve seen from Kamina, Kittan, and Nia, death is inevitable. You can run in screaming or go out quietly, but it’ll happen. And life will go on.
Tumblr media
Or, maybe this is just a dumb show about giant robots and I’m thinking too much over it. But I guess that’s what happens when you love a show enough. You start thinking more about it and can’t help but make more out of it than you really need to.
But, like, there you go, I guess.

You Can(Not) UnGay Kaworu Nagisa - An Essay
Tumblr media
This is a text-version of my video-essay on the recent Netflix/Evangelion translation controversy. To see the video version, please click here!
I make no secret of the fact that the linguistics involved in Anime and Game translation are one of my primary fields of interest as a Japanologist. Compared to translation between Germanic and Romanic Languages, as the west is used to it, translating from Japanese to English is filled with a plethora of pitfalls, the likes of which can be very difficult to imagine unless you’re fluent in both languages.
It’s because of this that my interest in any given AniManga controversy immediately skyrockets as soon as the matter of translation issues is brought up. Which brings us to June 21st’s release of Netflix’ Redub of Studio Gainax’ internationally infamous existential creator meltdown disguised as a Mecha Anime, Neon Genesis Evangelion.
1.)    Neon Genesis ADVangelion
Tumblr media
For those among you who haven’t yet heard of this inherently controversial work – what rock do you live under and does it still have vacancies? In all seriousness though, enough videos attempting to summarize the plot of NGE exist on the internet to make giving the rundown here an exercise in redundancy. All you need to know is that the protagonist’ name is Shinji and that he’s a mental-wreck with Daddy Issues who pilots a giant cyborg infused with the soul of his dead Mom to fight surrealist alien abominations and gains an increasingly screwed up social life doing so, all while his already fragile psyche gradually declines to world-ending consequences. For far less fatalistic takes on some of these concepts, please see RahXephon and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Good? Good. Let’s move on.
Tumblr media
The original ADV Films dub of Neon Genesis Evangelion and its sequels and spin-offs is… not really flawless, to say the least, but it did a good job in introducing the series to a western audience while staying entirely true to the themes and intentions of the original version. This is definitely at least partially thanks to the fact that director and auteur of the series, Hideaki Anno, personally oversaw the translation and dubbing process, and while the guy in all honesty doesn’t really know the first thing about voice acting – his performance as Jiro in The Wind Rises is one of the reasons it’s my least favorite Ghibli movie – what he does understand is his own work, and what it should convey to the audience in order to be authentic to his vision. So while I do have my issues with the ADV dub, such as poor audio-quality and hopeless cases of overacting caused by poor voice direction in certain parts, the translated script of the series was as stellar as could be expected from something created with the original author’s input, and to the very end of the original 26 episodes run, one can definitely feel the deep, emotional investment every single member of the English cast had in these characters and their journey. (I mean. Just listen to Spike Spencer’s secret rant in the end of the last episode. The dude clearly cares about what happens to Shinji.) In any case, this is probably one of the most influential, iconic dubs to all of the English-speaking Anime Fandom.
Then Netflix decided to license NGE. Not the ADV Dub. Just the show.
People were not happy.
2.)    The Rebuild of Netflixgelion
Tumblr media
Please do not mistake what I’m saying for pedantic. The iconic nature of the original ADV dub of NGE cannot be understated, and plays a huge role in the current lack of acceptance for the Redub, even though previous similar redubbing efforts, such as in the case of Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon, where welcomed by the community wholeheartedly. The new dub cast is absolutely stellar, including voice acting veterans such as Carrie Keranen and Erica Lindbeck, and Casey Mongillo’s amazing vocal range goes a long way to replicate and convey the emotional depth of Shinji Ikari in a way previously only seen in Megumi Ogata’s original Japanese performance. However, while the Netflix dub has a wonderful cast and voice direction, what it does not have is the original dub’s Hideaki Anno-approved script.
…Aaaaand, this is where the real troubles start.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To be totally clear, the redub always meant trouble. The original voice cast were reportedly never given a real chance to reprise their roles- despite efforts made by the main trio, Spike Spencer, Amanda Winn Lee and Tifanny Grant to at least be given a chance to audition – which is a surefire recipe for upsetting a lot of fans. However, this is a problem that could have at least been partially smoothed over after allowing the performances of the new cast to shine in their own right. I mean, even if it is incredibly scummy to not even inform the old cast of the auditions for the redub, if the new version proves to contain superior performances and direction in comparison to the, honestly badly-aged ADV dub, then Netflix’s decision to make an entirely new dub is entirely understandable, right?
No such arguments can be applied to the retranslation of the show’s script.
3.)    The End of Authorial Intent
Tumblr media
I haven’t rewatched the entire show in the new dub, just two key episodes. That said, I wouldn’t dream of calling the new script ‘bad’. It’s, for the most part, natural and faithful to the original Japanese source text in much the same way the ADV dub was, to the point that some stray lines received identical translation in both versions. What gives the new script away as entirely unrelated to that of the ADV dub, however, are some rather…  baffling localization choices.
All of those decisions are rooted in the original Japanese script. They’re not incorrect translations. If the Japanese were to be your only point of reference, there would be no reason to complain about these choices.
But we do have a point of reference. The ADV script. Which was overseen and approved by Hideaki Anno. The original director.
In the making of this video, I have since learned that Anno’s animation company, Khara, was most likely involved in the translation of the script for the Redub. However, as I can’t find any evidence that he himself was involved, the point I am about to make still stands:
Back in the 90s, very shortly after the show concluded its original run, Anno personally signed off on every single choice the ADV dub made. The respective pronunciations of Nerv, Seele and Gehirn, calling the EVA pilots by the correct singular “Child”, rather than the awkward Engrish singular “Children” the original Japanese featured, and referring to the enemies consistently as Angels, even in parts where the original Japanese mixed up the terminology for the sake of a pun with Kaworu’s name.
So, all of the ADV localization changes are within the intent of the original author. They are part of how the show is meant to be consumed by a western audience. Not carrying over this terminology, despite it being faithful to the Japanese script, thus ironically makes the Netflix script LESS faithful to Anno’s authorial intent than the ADV dub. But those are only terminology changes, right? They’re not a big deal. They don’t alter the context of the narrative itself.
Kaworu Nagisa.
4.)    Kaworu Nagisa
Tumblr media
Remember how I mentioned that I only really watched two episodes of the Netflix dub all the way through so far? Well, one of those two episodes happens to be one of the series’ most infamous, right after the two-part finale: Episode 24. “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door”, or “The Final Messenger” – Let’s not get hung up on which it is, Evangelion has ALWAYS been weird with titles.
This Episode introduces Kaworu Nagisa, the fifth of the EVA pilots and long-time fangirl-favorite for not-so-subtle reasons. Kaworu appears as Shinji is at his lowest point, our main protagonist’s already pretty much non-existent self-esteem in shambles. The two boys bond immediately over… the fact that Kaworu can sing ‘Ode to Joy’? Yeah, let’s go with that – And the majority of the episode consists of showcasing the growing relationship between Kaworu and Shinji, beginning with simple conversations, but quickly progressing into some more… serious territory.
Tumblr media
I won’t sugarcoat things, in terms of narrative structure, the episode is a mess, rushing from scene to scene with reckless abandon, attempting to successfully tell a story in under 25 minutes, that some Disney Movies don’t tell right in 90+ minutes. This is doubtlessly due to the overall mess that NGE’s production process had become at this point in its original run for reasons too complicated to talk about in this video, but let me assure you that there’s pretty solid evidence that Kaworu was definitely originally meant to appear for much more than a single episode. As it stands, however, he dies in the same episode he is introduced, begging Shinji to assist him in his suicide after revealing himself to him as the final Angel. His effect on Shinji, however, is profound and comparable to the effect Nia Teppelin of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann has on that show’s protagonist, Simon Giha. In that way, just as with Nia later, it is plain as day that Kaworu is intended to be one of Shinji’s love interests. And the episode is NOT subtle at all in portraying him as such.
A lot can be said about the exact nature of Kaworu’s affection for Shinji, from Kaworu clearly seeing Shinji as some sort of avatar for humanity as a whole on which he projects his admiration for the species, to Shinji seemingly falling victim to an idealized Oedipus Complex in regards to his perception of Kaworu, the fact remains that their interactions with one another in Episode 24 are in places obviously romantic to even sexual in not only the dialogue, but also the visuals. Even with Hideaki Anno’s profession that Shinji’s romantic feelings for Kaworu aren’t “carnal”, they’re still obviously there. Projected and skewed by their unusual psyches as aspects of it may be, the relationship between them is clearly portrayed in a way that transcends the platonic and becomes intimate more quickly than your seafood friends can start singing ‘kiss the guy’ on a romantic boat ride – It’s not subtext, you guys. Towards Shinji Ikari, Kaworu Nagisa acts and speaks quite openly like one would speak to a lover. And even if Kaworu and his ambiguous humanity are somehow not gay enough for you, well, resident violently blushing and stuttering smitten wreck Shinji Ikari will put your doubts to rest. The visual homosexual (homoromantic?) tension in these scenes is so tangible, you can cut it with a knife. The dialogue, at certain points, doesn’t even really matter. Kaworu could quite literally be reading off the grocery list, and these scenes would STILL be gay.
That doesn’t mean the dialogue is not important, and that one shouldn’t really, really pay attention to what’s on screen when translating.
5.)    The Final Angel is in the Detail
Tumblr media
The translation of Kaworu’s words to Shinji in the Netflix dub is not wrong. But it ignores the context of the scene, as well as authorial intent. And that’s why I understand why people are angry at it.
The lines in question are these :
(Scene 1)
Kaworu: そう、好意に値することよ。
Shinji: 好意?
Kaworu:「好き」ってこと、さ
(Scene 2)
Shinji: カヲル君が「好きだ」って言ってくれたんだ。僕のこと。初めて…初めて人から「好きだ」って言われたんだ。
In the ADV dub, these lines were translated like this:
(Scene 1)
Kaworu: This is worth earning my empathy.
Shinji: Empathy?
Kaworu: I’m saying “I love you.”
(Scene 2)
Shinji: Kaworu said that he loved me. I’ve never... felt such kindness before.
In the Netflix dub, however, they were translated like this:
(Scene 1)
Kaworu: Yes, you’re worthy of my grace.
Shinji: Your grace?
Kaworu: I’m saying “I like you.”
(Scene 2)
Shinji: Kaworu said I was worthy of his grace. That was the first time... someone told me they liked me.
Which one of these is right? The fact is… both are.

The Japanese term “ 好き ” doesn’t really have a direct equivalent in English. It holds a connotation that is meant to convey very personal, but broadly defined affection. It doesn’t simply mean “to like something”. It means to feel a strong, positive, emotional connection to that person of thing. For that reason, this term can be used to profess affection to your friends, your family, your favorite item… Or as a love-confession.
In Japan, love-confessions using “ 好き ” are a lot, lot more common than the much, much stronger term “愛する”, let alone the implicitly sexual term “恋する”. In most romance Manga, “ 好き ” will be the term of choice the heroine uses to confess her love to her object of affection. And though, via character analysis, a strong argument can be made that when Kaworu uses “ 好き ” to express his affection for Shinji, he means general affection towards Shinji’s humanity more than personal, romantic affection, this is clearly not how Shinji takes Kaworu’s words. To Shinji, what Kaworu said in that moment, definitely sounded like a confession of romantic devotion, which becomes very, very clear when Shinji later tells Misato:
Shinji: 初めて人から「好きだ」って言われたんだ。
With the line being translates as “I like you”, this statement of Shinji sounds like pure delusion, which wouldn’t be out of character for him, of course, but isn’t at all what the episode is trying to get across. Of course people have told Shinji before they ‘like’ something about him! That’s a big part of the reason he started defining himself through his status as pilot of EVA Unit 01; his efforts earned him praise from those around him. He had friends for most of the series, at least implicitly, these people have definitely expressed a ‘liking’ for him. So by translating “好き” as “like” in this context, a whole layer of the statement is lost, and Shinji professing that this was the first time anybody has ever said that they “like” him sounds less like a serious revelation about his character, and more like his typical, delusional whining about how the world hates him.
And I think that’s why Anno signed off on the ADV dub translating the line as “I love you” rather than “I like you”. Because the point of this line is not Shinji thinking that Kaworu is the only person who’s ever tolerated his presence. It’s that Shinji feels like Kaworu was the first person to ever have a genuine, emotional connection to him. Something he’s never allowed himself to have, due to the series’ often cited theme of Hedgehog’s Dilemma.
And, as correct as translating “ 好き ” as “like” is,  a whole dimension of Episode 24 of NGE is entirely lost if you choose to translate Kaworu’s lines that way. As much sense as it technically makes.
Tumblr media
The Netflix dub of NGE, by all measures known to me, is a very well-acted, well-directed, well-translated version of a classic piece of Animation History. I am not telling anyone that it is in any way bad or even inferior to the original, and I am not telling anyone to avoid it.
All I am saying is, that if you, as a translator, have access to references regarding authorial intent you should probably use them.

Top 10 Cutest Anime Girls
Before I start, I want to say that this is my list. I understand if you don’t completely agree with me, but please, no hate. Now, with that out of the way, let’s begin!
10) Miu Amaha: Mashiro Iro symphony
Miu is a third-year student of Yuihime Girls’ Academy. She lives in a house nearby the school with her mother and two cats. She is the founder and president of the Nuko club. The club is to care for various animals. She also works part-time at a maid cafe. named Dolce to earn money for activity of the club the Nuko Club is not an official club, so the club’s budget is not supplied by the school. She is very kind
9) Ruri Gokou: Oriemo
As much as I hate this anime’ Ruri gouko was my first anime crush. She is an otaku who takes interest in watching teenage anime and dislike cute animes. She also goes online from time to time to chat with other anime watchers who seem to can’t make friends. Her online name is Kuroneko, meaning ‘black cat’
Kuroneko is also known for her dark clothing and scarlet eyes. She cosplays daily in gothic lolita clothing similar to those worn on her favorite anime, Maschera ~Lamentation of the Fallen~. However, it is revealed that scarlet isn’t her real eye color; she just wears contacts (her real irises are lavender). She writes doujinshi and novels, but none of her works are popular. Kuroneko is very intelligent and has a large vocabulary, making her works too sophisticated for the average reader.
8) Yoko littner: Gurren lagann
Yoko was born in Littner village. Later on, she would meet up with Simon and kamina while fighting the Gunmen attacking Simon and Kamina’s village, Giha Village. Afterward, she travels with them and their Gunmen to help fight the evil Spiral King. In the anime, Simon makes advances towards her which are ignored as she is developing feelings for Kamina which are eventually returned. Her main weapon is a sniper rifle which she uses effectively to help take out Gunmen.
After the time jump in the anime she works as a teacher taking the name ‘Yomako’. When the Anti-Spirals attack she returns to Kamina City and busts Simon out of jail. She participates in the battles against the Anti-Spirals up to their defeat after which she returns to her island to teach further generations.
7) Azuso Nankano: k-on
Azusa is a talented guitarist, while she claims to be a beginner, she has been playing since she was in fourth-grade. Both her parents are in a Jazz Band, although never seen on screen, because of this Azusa often enjoys visiting jazz clubs.
Azusa at first was unsure about joining the Light Music Club, and originally showed interest in joining the Jazz Appreciation Club but was hesitant against joining beacause “It didn’t quite seem the same as real jazz.” Azusa finally decided to join the Light Music Club after Ui brings her to there live performance at the school festival.
6) Mashiro Shiina: sakurosou no pet
She is a world famous artist who transferred into Suiko as a second-year to learn how to draw manga. Although her artworks are widely admired by the world in spite of her young age, she knows nothing other than drawing, and has an extreme lack of common sense and living ability. Due to this, Sorata is forced to handle Mashiro’s living chores, to the point that he even has to pick out underwear for her, or she will go out without them.
She has very bad grades, since she cannot pay attention to the class, but she can still pass the make-up exams by remembering all of the answers with her art talent.
5 ) Uraraka Ochako: my hero academy
Ochaco is a petite, slender teenage girl. She has fair skin, big round brown eyes, and shoulder-length brown hair which sports two long locks beside her face and a short bob at the back. She also has little pads on the top of each of her fingers, similar to the pads on an animal’s paws, which are used to activate her Quirk.
4) Seiko Shinohara : Corpse Party
Seiko is an extremely cheerful and energetic girl who enjoys playing around with her friends. She often comes across as immature and crass and makes over-the-top outbursts that surprise everyone around her, but her friends are able to put up with it. She generally tries to maintain this personality even while trapped inside Heavenly Host, though the grim reality of their situation nearly causes her to suffer from an emotional breakdown several times.
She is not without a responsible side, however, which she developed after her mother disappeared two years ago in order to support her father and care for her three younger siblings. She easily becomes upset whenever anyone takes her feelings towards her mother’s disappearance lightly
3) Chitoge Kirisaki: Nesekoi
Chitoge is very smart and completely fluent in both English and Japanese despite growing up in America, being half-Japanese. She is somewhat forgetful, aggressive and quick to attack someone who gets on her nerves. However, once someone gets to know her better, she becomes very talkative and nice. Similar to Raku, Chitoge is the type to go out of her way to help someone. For example, when Raku lost his pendant once again from the chain being broken, Chitoge had secretly gotten the Beehive gang to help fix it for him and gave it back later that night. She is also one to be totally oblivious to love. When her friend asked her to diagnose her about her sickness, (which was actually love) she did not know what to do.
2) Emilia: re:zero
Emilia is good natured and likes to take care of others, though Emilia herself refuses to admit it, instead thinking of it as her own selfishness. She is indifferent to her own appearance, leaving puck to take care of her clothes and hair. Because her appearance is similar to the witch, she has received unfair discrimination from others. She sometimes acts like a child and is unacquainted with the world as she used to live in the woods with other Elves, though despite this she still works hard to become a king.
1) Eucliwood hellscythe: is this a zombie?
At first, she seems to be emotionless and mute (or has a preference not to talk) but is in fact very kindhearted to her friends and other people. At one point, Ayumu even goes so far as to call her the most caring person he’s ever met. Eu is also shown to be a very forgiving person.
Eucliwood later admits that she is ashamed and even terrified of her abilities, and she wished for someone to be by her side in spite of her frightening ability. It appears that she has found that person in the form of Ayumu himself. He also provides her with comfort when she thinks about her many insecurities and she is shown to take these feelings to heart.
This list is based on my own choice. Feel free to comment about your cute AnimeGirls :). Thanks for Giving your precious time to us. Have a Nice Day !
