One of the "fathers of the furry fandom" and the founder of the first furry convention in the 80s, Mark Merlino aka Sylys Sable, suffered a series of strokes recently. His partners have put up a fundraiser to help cover medical and rehabilitation expenses:

Mark has been a pivotal figure in the furry community, dedicating his passion and energy to its growth and development from its early days. He is known for organizing ConFurence, the very first furry convention, which laid the groundwork for the community's expansion and visibility. Mark's organization of the Prancing Skiltaire Parties has been instrumental in creating vibrant, unifying events cherished by many. His influential role was also recognized in the documentary feature "The Fandom," showcasing his significant contributions.

We come to you with a heavy heart to share the latest developments in Mark’s health journey. After undergoing further medical evaluations, doctors have discovered what is likely the underlying cause of Mark's stroke: A cancerous tumor in his liver. The diagnosis is stage IV cancer, and based on the medical team's recommendations, we are beginning to make arrangements for hospice care.
