it’s time for another stupid fandom poll
welcome to mdzs university!!! what’s you’re major? just kidding, it doesn’t matter. what does matter is you have to join a group to complete your first group project. no pressure, the project only counts for 50% of your total grade this semester.
so:
put your reasons in the tags if you feel so compelled! i’ll mix up the group members for the next poll just to keep things interesting 👀

my sister was talking about wizard ghost book with me, and was like ‘I know there’s like 7 gay tragedies, but the most canon ones, the nice ones, (she was meaning wangxian and songxiao) both have the surviving person in the couple become the caretaker for the other one’s kid. And I really like that’
And she’s right. It’s a parallel I hadn’t noticed. You can’t not pay attention to LWJ raising WWX’s child while he’s dead. But Song Lan doesn’t just take the shattered fragments of his partner’s soul. He’s given (as if it’s the most natural thing to do) the shattered fragments of his partner’s kid’s soul too. And his stated goal is to safeguard both of them, take care of both of them, figure out a way to repair both of them get both of them back. He doesn’t have any promise he’s getting either of them; but he takes them both. He knew A-Qing for like 4 minutes before death, but that’s his kid now too.
I don’t know where I was going with this, I just saw that official art with Song Lan and the shadows of XXC and A-Qing and started typing at light speed

I believe that no matter what he did, there was no happy ending for Jin Guangyao.
Whether he stayed with the Nie (he would always wish that he could have been legitimized by his father. [Because of the better social standing it would bring him which was a very big deal actually he would have been miserable unless he was legitimized, because he really wanted his father's acceptance, because he had to replace that horrible last memory of Jinlintai in his mind, because it was his birthright, & most importantly because it was his mother's last wish], he would get bullied & humiliated & get looked down upon every day by almost everyone, he would always wish [& know that with his potential] he could reach much higher and make the changes he wanted to make in the world) or didn't, or join the Lans (the same problems but maybe with less bullying and fewer shit talks because it would have been against the Lan rules and also the Lans owed JGY big time) or the Jiangs, whether Meng Shi survived or didn't (I think JGY wouldn't have told her about that staircase incident, then who knows what lies he'd make up and what he would do to hide that he was not accepted by the Jins from his mother or get accepted by them at any cost and what it would result in) whether NHS planned his downfall or didn't (he still had the head of NMJ in his secret room that he claimed "wouldn't let him go", he still slept in the same bed as his sister, he still had and had lost a son with her that he claimed that "his blood ran cold everytime he looked at him" & whether he did have him killed or not he blamed himself for his death [I've explained here why I think that], he still had to live with the knowledge that no matter what horrible deed he committed for JGS, no matter how hard he tried he was never "worth mentioning" to his father, and had to lose all his considerable filial piety & what was essentially his life's mission to the point that he murdered his father) whether he went to Dongying (he'd have still lost all he built in his motherland, despite years of trying to build himself a good reputation and prove anyone who taunt him wrong, he'd still always be known as the rotten "son of a prostitute" there. And He'd have to start from scratch in Dongying, He'd still had to leave without Meng Shi's body, NHS would never get off his tail, and he'd be separated from LXC and JL [even if they followed him, he likely would feel bad for separating them from their sects and their families. Those were things that JGY himself longed for most of his life. He wouldn't want them to follow him.]) or didn't. & don't even start with him marrying LXC which would make all his problems exponentially worse. It would probably get LXC in trouble too (maybe he'd had to leave his sect) and that would be something that JGY would never want.
Certainly, what happened to him in canon was the worst possible scenario and he might have been less miserable in some of those other scenarios, but there were just no happy endings for him.
#for everyone else#you can pinpoint the moment when everything started to go wrong for them.#And most of them could even go on fine after that moment if some other moments hadn't happened to them.#Most of them had many chances for happiness. But JGY was doomed from the start.#jin guangyao#meng yao#jgy#mdzs#the untamed#cql#chen qing ling#mo dao zu shi#the grandmaster of demonic cultivation#tgod#mxtx#my two cents#but occasionally I like to indulge myself by imagining an Untamed timeline AU in which JGY joins XXC and SL#in their sect that is based on ideals rather than bloodline but he's more realistic than them#so he tries to secure good lobby and financial support and marketing (LXC is definitely going to back him up)#while gaslighting XXC and SL that he's not in fact making it bureaucratic no sir not at all#so with his help their sect expands and since common people are a lot more than nobles with numbers comes power#but who can drag them down with JGY behind them? so JGY with the help of LXC can still build the watchtowers#XY joins them (and does their dirty work in secret) but JGY mediates between him and XXC & SL (so they can get into their polyamory)#later the Wen Remnants can join them under the guise of a group of unrelated common people.#Wens? No. Fuck them Wens. Nobody here has seen any Wens ever. Who knows where they've gone?#(except perhaps the Wen siblings. 'cause Ghost General and the best Doctor in Qishan and WRH's fave were kinda famous.#they had to hide somewhere. maybe WQ now that she knew her clan was safe could marry JC.#and they could be like 'We've been married for years actually. look! we even have a son!' *shows A-Yuan*)

This all started because I was pondering on what motive Xue Yang had to make Xiao Xingchen a “bad” man. We could talk about his revenge towards Xiao Xingchen but with this I think Wei Wuxian makes a good point. He asks Xue Yang who he really was taking revenge for. If it was for himself, why did he dig out Chang Ping’s eyes? Why did he torture him to death? Who was he really trying to repay? Wei Wuxian is, of course, alluding to the idea that Xue Yang was doing it to avenge Xiao Xingchen. With this being said, I don’t think Xue Yang made Xiao Xingchen commit crimes for “revenge” if the whole reason he even committed a brutal crime was for Xiao Xingchen.
The real motive was this: Xue Yang had to bring Xiao Xingchen down to his level. He had to make him a killer just like Xue Yang because Xue Yang couldn't come up. He didn’t want to become “better” because he saw it as pointless and unfruitful. Xue Yang couldn’t become the ethereal and kind being Xiao Xingchen was to him. He didn't have it in him to be kind and selfless like Xiao Xingchen but he still wanted them to be equals. He wanted to walk in Xiao Xingchen's company as an equal, a real friend, someone to be needed. However, Xiao Xingchen, wonderful and gentle and generous Xiao Xingchen, would never need- never want- a murderer, even if Xue Yang murdered for Xiao Xingchen. He was upset because the very thing Xiao Xingchen hated him for was supposed to be a good gesture. It was a sign of protection, of undying loyalty. Xiao Xingchen was "too good," in Xue Yang's words, for him. He was too righteous to see that someone could do evil things for good reasons, to avenge someone who would never do it themself.
So it’s this vicious cycle where Xiao Xingchen was an enemy, then an obsession, someone to be respected. Under a new identity, Xiao Xingchen even became his friend. Xiao Xingchen gave him freedom from the burden of his reputation. For years, Xue Yang behaved (to Xiao Xingchen’s knowledge) but even with that knowledge, with that tangible experience, Xiao Xingchen immediately wants to fight him, to remove Xue Yang from his life. How hard must that have been? To have been someone loved and needed in one moment and cast to the side for your past actions in another? Again, this is all bearing in mind that Xiao Xingchen does not know what the audience knows yet. Xiao Xingchen only knows that this man makes him laugh every day, that he goes to the market for him and A-Qing, that he makes animals from apples. He leaves Xue Yang candy! Yet, as soon as it is revealed that he is Xue Yang, none of that seems to matter anymore.
What would have happened if Song Lan never showed up? What if A-Qing had never told Xiao Xingchen about Xue Yang’s true identity? What if they kept on as they were? Xue Yang didn’t bring up Xiao Xingchen’s “crimes” until Xiao Xingchen turned on him (in his mind) and made him feel as less than. If he was really trying to torture Xiao Xingchen, then why wait years to reveal what Xue Yang made him do? I think Xue Yang was trying to create his own ideal world- one where Xiao Xingchen came down to his level, was humanized, and in a city where no one could reveal that he was actually Xiao Xingcehn’s mortal enemy (killing all of the villagers with an alternative motive besides just “make Xiao Xingchen commit crimes.”) He was setting up a home, in a twisted way, where he could keep an eye on everything, continuing to be the puppet master in this grand scheme where the ultimate goal was to have something akin to family.
